"If you had the chance to change the past, would you take it? Or would you try to make the best of what you'd been dealt by fate, moving forward even when you don't feel you know where to begin?"

~~~
"You know, the fact that you're always talking to yourself is bad enough, Gui, but the fact you keep doing so in that gibberish is only making things worse."
The words, delivered in a dry, almost sharp tone, were enough to snap Guiliaume out of his self-induced reverie. He knew that had been the point; that was always the point, and he knew he ought to be grateful to be the subject of such attention. But right now, he only felt annoyance, and that annoyance was clear in the reproachful look he shot the speaker: a large, darkly feathered condor who was sauntering along at his side. He knew she meant well; that she was trying to keep from from getting sucked back into the brooding mental place he'd spent so long working to escape. But as far as Guiliaume was concerned, there was a difference between brooding and thinking; philosophical questions fell firmly into the 'thinking' category.
Still, Vexen the condor was a relatively new companion, and it was in Guiliaume's nature to be charitable. So after a moment, his response came in his normal quiet, measured tones. "You know I find it easier to work through things if I say them aloud, Vexen; can I help it that there are some things I prefer to discuss in French? It's good practice for me, particularly now that I no longer have anyone to steadily converse with." That had been his own doing; he had only recently left the French colonial village where he'd spent several pleasant months brushing up on his language skills and talking through his demons with his very good friend Aziza. He owed her a lot, he knew; it was thanks to her that he was taking these positive steps. Steps that were literally carrying him closer to his past, and what he hoped was a resolution between that past and a happy future.
Judging by the expression on Vexen's face, the condor was having trouble believing him. Honestly, Guiliaume couldn't blame her; he'd been in quite the agitated mental state when they'd first met. But weeks had passed since then, and he felt that he'd shown her more than sufficiently just how fit he was now feeling.
As if she read his mind, the condor sighed and turned away. "Well, fine then. If you want to talk things out with yourself in that nonsense, I'll leave you to it...for now. I think I smelled a carcass a bit back, and I'm feeling peckish. But I expect you to have this out of your system when I get back," Vexen commanded with a no-nonsense tone in her voice. As she started off through the trees in the direction of her meal, Guiliaume allowed himself a slight smile as he replied in perfect 'gibberish', "I make no promises."
Sometimes, settling into a conversation could be downright difficult!
Darian huffed as he sat on a large stone using his large paws to crush some nuts into small pieces. Truly the tiny morsel were not his favorite snack, but it was all the bear had managed to scrounge up. "Oh how I wish spring would come already!" the bear licked his lips and nearly drooled at the thought of the berries and honey spring brought about. A thin trail trail of drool rolled over his lips before the bear even realized what happened, he quickly licked his chops to remove the evidence of his day dreaming. Yep, he definitely could not wait for spring and all of her bounty.
"It will be worth it for sure!"
Anabelle drifted out of the forest line, shaking dead leaves out of her wings. With a quick dart, the small mare lapped up some of her familiar's snack, and munched happily. A black paw swatted playfully at her but it was far to late and the mare gad danced away laughing.
The bear shook his head and sighed, seeming to be exasperated at the mare that kept stealing his food every chance she got. Yet blue eyes sparkled, his heart was light and soared on her wings to see her smile, to see her happy. He slowly snacked as the little reddish mare drifted away, nibbling on the few shoots of green grass she could find.
Her head-feathers twitched almost in time with her ears, as if they might help the mare with awareness of her surroundings. She was a picture of peace, nearly napping as she drifted around grazing. Darian was there, and everything seemed normal and thus the young one had not a care in the entire world.
Then a wrench was thrown into her peaceful day. With a shift in the wind everything turned upside down in the blink of an eye.
Anabelle's head shot up; her entire body was locked into an alert position, even her wings and head feathers were up screaming her silent internalized fear. She stood caught in a tenuous limbo between fight or flight, with muscles trembling beneath the soft clay red coat as the mare's mind went into a full civil war to make the final decision in what action she should take.
Her beige eyes strained at the horizon, and so focused was she that Darian's movements to place himself between her and whatever had startled her, went entirely unnoticed.
After Vexen had disappeared into the underbrush, Guiliaume had just kept on walking. Though his relationship with the condor was new, she had already proved more than capable of tracking him, or anything else, down once she'd set her mind to it. Guiliaume had been surprised the first time she'd tracked him down; he had meant for the parting to be permanent. The second time she'd found him, he'd literally taken flight in an effort to put some space between them. Since then, he'd come to accept not only Vexen's tracking abilities, but also her company; she might be aggravating at times, but she was also capable of sound logic.
So, even though he wasn't waiting for her, he wasn't worried about her, either. Which was more than he could say about the mare he ended up encountering only a short time after parting ways with Vexen.
He still wasn't used to this part of the world, and there were stops and starts where he least expected them. He tried to do more walking than flying, on the grounds that he'd get a better 'lay of the land' while on foot, but travelling on foot meant he kept getting disoriented and popping up in places he didn't expect. He'd thought he was firmly in the middle of the woods, miles away from the treeline; imagine his surprise when after a mere couple steps he found himself blinking at the clear unobstructed sky!
That, and a bear. A small white bear that was standing between him and a truly freaked-out looking mare. Once again, Guiliaume found himself at a loss. The bear didn't seem to be behaving aggressively, but what else could be making the mare so on edge?
Clearing his throat, he said in his quiet way, "Is everything alright here? Or is there something with which I can assist?"
A long moment seemed to past, and Darian just quietly eyed Guiliaume up, deep blue eyes trying to catch every movement. The bear tried to remain passive in nature He wanted to know for sure, in his own mind at least, what the bright stallion's intentions were. When the soft spoken words, were spoken he seemed to make up his mind and sat down a paw careful placed against Anabelle's leg. The silent reassurance relaxed the small mare.
With cheeks changing fifty-five shades of red Anabelle shuffled a hoof in the grass and looked down sheepishly, "excuse my rudeness .. we've traveled far and not meet many others" her voice was soft and accented with a hint of a slow drawl (think southern US). The bear grunted "aaand you're afraid of your own shadow 'Belle." his voice was gruff, but even the tease was said in a loving manner.
She ducked her head, shuffling a hoof and her cheeks found fifty new shades of red to turn.
When she tilted her eyes back too him, her cheeks had settled back to a few scant shades of their normal color. She quietly studied their visitor, his coat was such a bright ruby red and deep black. His mane was perfect it seemed to the very last stand, deep black with a slight wave. She realized quiet quickly her own mane must look a mess, despite best efforts it had a mind of it's own, and billowed about her head and neck.
None to quickly it occurred if she didn't think of something to say she was going to stand there looking like a silly thing, with the first thing that came to her mind she tried to strike some friendly conversation. "Excuse my boldness, but you have an accent I've never heard, you must come from somewhere far from here yes?" Despite looking collected and calm on the outside a spark of foal-hood wonder and excitement flared in her eyes, the idea of travel and new lands was an exciting one for sure, and a flight of fancy she always sought to indulge a little.
Well, it was certainly reassuring to know that the mare wasn't in any danger; while Guiliaume would certainly jump in to defend her if she was, the facts of the matter were that he was no warrior and was not the best in any sort of combat. Though he couldn't say it was pleasant to realize that he himself was the source of the mare's distress, he could understand shyness. It was much easier to deal with social anxiety than true physical danger; social anxiety was something he could personally relate to.
So he gave both mare and bear a slight, cordial nod, acknowledging the apology and short explanation. "No need to apologize, Miss; there was no rudeness felt. I can understand there can be distress caused by strangers," Guiliaume added with a slight bob of his head. He kept his head down and his eyes slightly lowered following the bob, realizing that he was being examined. While he couldn't fault the mare for looking him over (after all, he WAS a stranger, and he'd just stumbled onto her and the bear uninvited; how was she to know he wasn't a threat?), the facts of the matter were that such scrutiny always made him a trifle uncomfortable.
Perhaps that put them on an equal footing!
His eyes flicked upwards again at her comment about his accent, and a slight, mild smile played at the corner of his mouth. "I would say we are both in possession of accents the other finds unusual, Miss, though please don't take that as a complaint. Yours is very soft and easy on the ear," he said with another little bob of his head. "But you are right, I'm a...well, you could be saying an immigrant. But I have been very diligent in my practice of the local language."
