Joy never would have thought she'd be back in the Mess Hall so soon after pulling KP for two days straight. But her room wasn't exactly homey or comforting, being in the basement and in need of something stronger than just a new coat of paint (a flamethrower came to mind), and laying waste to a defenseless training dummy just wasn't cutting it. She needed to be somewhere she could feel calm, or as close to calm as she was capable.

It would have struck Joy as odd that she found herself relaxing in the Mess Hall of all places, but the smell of cooking and the white noise of other hunters eating had that effect on her. It reminded her of the karinderya she and her friends used to eat at, and she didn't realize how badly she needed a taste of home until she sat down. Stuffing her phone into her coat's pocket, Joy began to eat from the tray of food. She wasn't tasting anything, not really, and was simply going through the motions.

Regrets. Bert didn't bother couching it in a question.

Dunno yet, she shrugged, then paused when her tastebuds finally caught up with her brain. Blech, maybe with the food.

((ooc: set in the Mess Hall whenever Joy's in between duties/chores.))

Prayer

This felt like something she should be doing in the privacy of her room but she found as a fresh trainee, unless there was a chore to be foisted onto her or a prank to play, she was pretty much invisible in the eyes of everyone else on the base. She didn't like the feeling. Not because she needed to be surrounded by friends and family, although she wouldn't have said no to the chance, but because the idea of being so insignificant rankled.

She didn't have her usual haunts or means of distraction, hell she didn't have any of her comfort food. Perhaps the reason she was doing this in the Mess Hall, was that she had an excuse. With the day's menu in a tray before her, Joy clasped her hands together, bowed her head, and began, "Aba Ginoong Maria, napupuno ka ng grasya..."

Prayer

"Amen," she finished, opening her eyes and unclasping her hands. She felt lighter, slightly happier afterwards, and was surprised by the curious sensation Bert was emitting in lieu of asking outright.

Huh, you feeling okay there, Bert?

The notion of shoulders rising and falling in a shrug was the weapon's only response. It would take Joy some time and several bites of food before it occurred to her that she'd successfully prayed. And with what could easily have been a demon inside of her.

Reaper. Bert rasped in annoyance.

Well eshush me, Joy mentally snapped as she rolled her eyes,

Faith

It was an automatic thing, ingrained and established into her since childhood. No matter the foods served, no matter the place seated, no matter the company kept, if it was meal time you shut up, bowed your head, and prayed. Joy was doing this out of habit. She wasn't being given grief over it and it seemed her weapon wasn't going into painful convulsions during each session.

It was somewhat disconcerting for her. But ******** if she knew why.

Faith

She wasn't prone to introspective moments. She liked moving and doing things and didn't like sitting still for too long. But each time she sat down to eat, each night before she went to bed, each time she bowed her head to pray, she couldn't help but wonder why.

Why doesn't uttering the Lord's words seem to affect her weapon? Sure, he wasn't exactly still a creature of Halloween but he could still generate a FEAR shield. And when had she started to use the word Fear with a capital letter, anyway?

Out of Reach

Perhaps Joy was being a bit too harsh when it came to the food at Deus. Maybe it wasn't really all that bad. Surely an organization capable of funding such fancy schmancy, high-techy gear would have enough money to provide their members with decent grub. Maybe the raw ingredients just end up... not as good as they could be?

She'd spent enough time in the kitchens but she still couldn't quite get why the mess hall's chow was the way it was. She poked at the lump on her plate, stabbing at it idly with her fork and swirling it around before reluctantly finishing it. Because it was a crime to waste food, no matter how unappetizing it was. Someone put their effort into making it, you really ought to honor the ingredients themselves if not the cook.

In the end, she figured it was probably beyond her.

Passive-Aggressive

It was a silly thing to do, Joy would be the first to admit to it. But it helped her, sorta, to deal with homesickness. She'd study the offered menu of the day, and try to find an appropriate equivalent of it in her old home's version.

Her bonded was finding it annoying more than anything. But he didn't really say it out loud. Joy could just get a sense of it, however, as the former-reaper was more likely to express feelings than put it to words.

The moon trainee opted to ignore him. At least until she actually heard the words to stop. Something she wasn't telling Bert and would rather he find out on his own.
