Hobbies:
Books – Haven discovered a love for books almost when she first learned to read, and having an older brother who loved books meant she learned to read at a young age. She's grown out of her old picture books, and fairytales no longer hold her interest the way they used to. She doesn't care for the things that could be, but rather the things that are. Non-fiction is her favorite genre. Biographies, auto-biographies, memoirs, historical texts. She's more interested in truth these days than the make-believe of her youth. The time of princes and princesses and evil witches has long been over. Haven's room is full of books, a lot of them passed along from her mother and older brother. She can spend hours in a bookstore perusing the shelves for something that catches her interest, and she finds comfort in the quiet of the library.
Research – Along with her love for reading comes Haven's love for compiling information. She's been known to pick a random topic to read up on and collect notes for, whether that topic eventually proves useful to her or not. From the Bubonic Plague to the Kennedy Assassination, and from the American Revolution to the Bakumatsu, Haven has expanded her research to cover a number of topics. Since discovering the war raging within Destiny City, Haven has taken to focusing her research on that. She wants to know everything she can about the whys and the hows. When did it start? Who struck the first blow? Why has it continued for so long without any sign of an end? She's compiled notes on the topic, which she keeps hidden in a box of her old stuffed animals, buried in the back of her closet where she assumes her parents won't venture.
Figure Skating – Haven began ice-skating when she was around five years old, taking lessons at her parent's behest. She quickly learned to love the sport and soon found she had a talent for it. What began as a fun weekend activity soon evolved into a passion. Since then, Haven has been to a variety of skating camps and has competed in local, state, and country-wide competitions. Haven has been known to place quite high in quite a few of these competitions. Her coach is a former Olympic bronze medalist. When she was, thirteen Haven placed fifth at the World Junior Figure Skating Championships. She hopes to be a contender for the 2018 Olympics in Pyeongchang. Naturally, she has her eye on the gold.
Educational Television – It used to be that Haven would watch shows on Science and History to soak in more information. Nowadays, she likes to watch documentaries and historical programs to pick out the biases and the flaws. She's been known to make corrections when watching a program. Sons of Liberty was horrendously inaccurate, but she'd expect nothing less from the History channel. Haven is of the opinion that it should be stripped of that name. Sometimes she'll watch something specifically to pick it apart. She does, however, enjoy the Travel Channel, the Discovery Channel, and Animal Planet. It used to be that she enjoyed shows about dinosaurs and volcanoes and weather phenomena—topics she views as rather childish now. Instead, her interests have drifted more toward space and evolution. She loved the documentary series Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey which broadcasted in 2014.
Virtues:
Clever – Haven has always been very bright, even as a much younger child. From a very young age she has been interested in learning and expanding her knowledge about the world around her. It is with knowledge, she believes, that one gains power and a true understanding of life. Haven is one of the smarter kids in her class and she knows it. She's good at puzzles and problem solving, riddles and mind games, and she's never afraid to try her hand at a challenge. She's not the sort to be frightened off by something that seems difficult or beyond her years. Even if she doesn't find the correct solution the first time, she's sure she'll learn something along the way. And it's the learning, she thinks, that's more important than the eventual outcome. After all, knowledge is power, and learning breeds success.
Determined – Once Haven has her mind set on something, it isn't very likely for her to back down or give up. Certainly not without a fight. Whether its her school work or her figure skating, or the new role she's found for herself in the war, Haven faces each new challenge with calm and determination. She doesn't let hardships stop her. Obstacles are not meant to bring an end to a journey; they're meant to be risen above. Haven is one to rise to the occasion. She doesn't let fear or unease control her. Of course she's capable of feeling fear, but instead of caving to it she uses it to strengthen her resolve. If her efforts result in failure, she'll study the situation and practice her approach until she finally succeeds. She doesn't let anyone tell her she can't do anything. In fact, telling her that is a sure fire way to get her to prove you wrong.
Prudent – Even as a child, Haven was the responsible sort; she did her homework in a timely manner, cleaned her room when she was told, and followed directions without a complaint. Though she may engage in activities others deem unsafe these days (the war most prominent among them), Haven does so with caution and discretion. She isn't the type to jump into the fray without first assessing the situation. Instead, she looks for what she believes to be the most sensible course of action. There is something very wise about her despite her continued youth. Unlike most reckless teenagers who spare little thought for the future, Haven is always looking ahead and planning accordingly. She is judicious in both thought and action.
Independent – With a mother who's frequently away on business, a father who's dedicated to his students, a grandfather who keeps an emotional distance from his grandchildren, and an older brother who tends to lock himself away and bury himself in his books, Haven has had to learn to take care of herself. She doesn't mind. In fact, she enjoys the independence. It makes her feel very adult. She would rather look after herself than have someone else look after her like she's still a child. Though she's only fourteen, Haven is very much in control of her own life. She relies on herself first and foremost, and turns to others only when she has to admit that she needs the assistance. As such, she presents herself as independent from those around her, rather than a burden.
Flaws:
Arrogant – Haven is a girl who feels a great amount of pride in herself, and it shows. If there's one thing she hates most, it's being wrong, so she does everything she can to make sure that she'd never wrong. Part of Haven's obsession with education is that she likes to be right. About everything. If one of her companions is doing something wrong, Haven will be the first to out-show them. From school work to figure skating, Haven has acquired quite a big head. It isn't uncommon to see her walking around with her nose in the air, or flipping her hair over her shoulder to make a point. Her expressions are often haughty and her tone of voice pretentious. She is certainly not against looking smug. Unfortunately, this arrogance often makes it seem as if she's putting other people down.
Inflexible – She may have great determination to do things her way, and to do them right, but once in that mindset Haven becomes rather stubborn to change. She doesn't like change. At all. She likes to know what to expect. She likes to know what she's getting herself into, and she likes to have control. Once she's decided what she wants to do and how she wants to go about doing it, there's very little other people can do to change her mind. Only when her way ends in obvious and absolute failure will she admit defeat and try something else. If she can't complete a task, she gets frustrated. When she fails at something, she'll keep trying until she gets it right. When she expects something, it had better happen or someone will surely hear about it.
Stodgy – Haven doesn't have a sense of humor. She doesn't like jokes, or pranks, or silly behavior. For one so young, Haven is remarkably serious. Rules and regulations are her safety net; there are rules in place for a reason, and Haven makes sure to follow them. She will step in the way and stop someone from doing something if she thinks it's stupid or poses a threat to those involved. Her will is unbending. She is not the type to charge right in without a plan she's sure will work, and she does her best to stop others from being dumb and doing things they shouldn't. In addition, though she doesn't have a particularly explosive temper, Haven can still find ways to let everyone around her know when she's displeased, and she's displeased frequently.
Cold – There's something sort of cold and distant about Haven. She isn't without emotion, but she's analytical, with curiosity and a sharp eye. She holds her emotions back to release in the safety and solitude of her bedroom. In the moment, Haven is thoughtful and somber. Though curious as to its origins and development, Haven faces the war with a severity one might expect from someone much older, with more experience under their belt. Haven looks to danger with a fearlessness that can seem reckless n spite of her typically responsible nature—a result of the surety she feels in herself; she may believe herself capable, only to later realize she's gotten in over her head. She faces the brutality and death not with disgust or remorse, but attentively and thoughtfully, like one might look at an experiment when the results are to be expected.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION
Eyes: Haven's eyes are large, almond-shaped, and inquisitive. They are a deep shade of teal. She has a few pairs of glasses because she used to have trouble seeing the board at school, but she convinced her parents to let her get contact lenses instead.
Hair: Kept long, falling nearly to her waist, Haven's hair is a dark brown cut in what she thinks are mature layers. Her hair is probably the most youthful part of her appearance, streaming down her back in waves and gentle curls. She's grown her bangs out, but they remain shorter than the rest of her hair; they fall to around mid-neck. They're usually brushed to the side and out of the way, or pinned back to keep them from falling to her face. She used to wear headbands, but has graduated to bobby pins and hair-clips that blend with her hair instead of standing out and matching her outfit.
Face: Haven's face has lost some of its youthful roundness, slimming to an oval in shape. She is pale-skinned with a peaches and cream complexion, which she washes religiously in an effort to stave off a bought of teenage acne. Unfortunately, her efforts are not always successful. Haven insists her appearance is rather plain, but if it weren't for the arrogant, self-satisfied, or prissy and dissatisfied expressions she often wears, she would look quite pretty.
Physique: Haven stands at 5'5”. She retains a slim but athletic build, with a noticeably developing bust, and legs toned from skating. Being a teenager, there is a gangliness to her physique that she hopes to grow out of.
Clothes: Not too long ago Haven's sense of fashion included nothing but skirts, dresses, and tights with modest, proper looking blouses. She still wears the skirts and dresses and blouses, but the tights and stockings are seen much less these days. Now her wardrobe has expanded a bit to include jeans and a few pairs of high waisted shorts, along with t-shirts and cardigans for layering purposes. She's not yet grown comfortable with heels. Instead, she wears ballet flats, Keds, Converses, and flat-soled boots. She has a thing for horizontal stripes and floral prints. She carries around messenger bags instead of purses because she can fit her books, papers, and pens in them.
