Ever himself could potentially have been the source of some of these macabre gatherings: the byproducts and leftovers of EMs in which Hunters had been giving non-specific instructions to bring back specimens of whatever they found. The result was mountains of plastic bags, folders, tupperware containers, test tubes, and anything else that had served as a temporary but tidy way of storing odds and ends.

Fetal mice. Dead moths. String permeated through with something black but, thankfully, no longer sticky.

He couldn't help but stare down at it in a disgusted, frustrated sort of way. This was probably, in its way, a gift -- better than burying himself in a stack of books only to learn nothing new, perhaps -- but it felt like something else entirely. There was little Ever wanted to do less this afternoon than match the specimens with their mission reports.

How's this?

Coffee carefully lidded so nothing could accidentally spill into it he approached the room. Sorting through various EM bring backs wasn't exactly the most appealing job, but it was a job and in that sense Cain was useful. Which made the long hours that this would likely turn into fine by him. Besides a part of the life trainee was ready to get back to business, after all he had just gotten back from vacation and sported a new haircut to prove it.

Entering with a lazy gaze it was then that Ever was spotted, the taller man given a simple brief smile as Cain went to place his coffee out of the way. "Didn't realize there would be help." The comment was made casually as violet eyes flickered to the table, taking in the mountain of things that needed to be sorted and processed. It was a vial that contained a glass eye that caught the trainee's attention, tanned fingers sliding out to grip and bring the familiar object forward to examine.

Being addressed as help should, perhaps, have rankled a bit -- after all, Ever'd been here long enough by now to advance to intermediate, had almost died, had spent the last week bones-rattlingly cold in Antarctica. In a place like Deus, where big egos seemed to be the norm, an indignant snort or affronted draw of air inward might have filled the air.

Instead, he just grinned: the expression starting slow and then kicking hard across his face, easy and comfortable as he dropped down into a chain and spread long legs out in front of him.

"I do strive to be helpful," he offered, diligently, though his tone said exactly the opposite. "Have you done this before?"

"Well hopefully your efforts aren't in vain then." Cain spared a glance up from the vial in hand and commented dully if with a half smile. He already didn't care for him, but as long as the guy was actually helpful it didn't really matter how he felt about him. Placing the bag back to the table the shorter man took a seat on the opposite side of the table and gave the other a look that questioned why he cared.

"No." Cain's features fell flat as he moved to pick up a file, adding additionally with a bored drawl, "but it doesn't take a genius to read." After all, it seemed pretty straightforward, read the files fit the items to it and store them away. A look up and violet eyes grinned where features stay flat, "you can read right?" The file was flipped open and he began to read.

"Not a word." Ever's eyes went wide as he said it, mock innocence, both of his eyebrows shooting up toward his hair line. It had been a bad question, because if Ever couldn't read, that meant that he didn't have to work -- he couldn't go through the labels on various samples, couldn't sort them into a fresh order, couldn't take any kind of notes.

He looked down at a baggy in front of him and squinted at the label, as if the writing there was a mystery.

A roll of eyes behind the file and he continued to read, for the moment simply ignoring the man until it came time for him to locate the item in said file. A glance towards the other and he blinked speaking dryly as he saw the look of mock puzzlement for the words, "hilarious smartass. " A slightly tanned hand reached over near the other man and snatched a baggy that appeared to be what he was looking for, in doing so he added sweetly, "I'm starting to question if this island is really a place for professionals and not some place karma dumped every a*****e in the world off to suffer with one another." Of course that didn't exclude himself, Cain knew he was a d**k.

"There's a procedure that makes it more tolerable." Ever offered it breezily, leaning one elbow in against the table and settling his chin into it to watch Cain -- curious, maybe, or amused, not entirely unfriendly. He flashed a smile, flicking the little bag thoughtfully between his fingers. He wasn't terribly productive, but it was what it was.

"I mean, a simple stick removal, and life is generally more fun." Briefly, his expression went wide-eyed, innocent.

Cain just about asked what that might be, then the man spoke, and he nearly wanted to punch him. Annoying bastards why the hell did this island have to be filled with them. But, he had to admit that was a good one and just a hint of amusement washed out into tanned features for a brief moment. Though he still wanted to hit him, maybe fix that crooked nose for him in the process.

A forced laugh sounded and short curly dark hair was pushed from the nineteen year olds forehead only to fall back. Violet eyes narrowed on the other and bluntly he spoke, "listen old man, I don't have time for this." Hands lifted and motioned to the other with a very serious look, "so do your goddamn work and stop giving me that doe-eyed bullshit look." Because he wasn't buying it for two seconds. A file was pushed towards the other and he got up to put the one he had finished away.

Was it, perhaps, more infuriating that Ever just grinned back at him, sudden and sharp and utterly shameless. He did, carefully, write a couple notes down, sorted this into that, but he was practically vibrating with Things Unsaid, and eventually flicked his eyes up at Cain again.

"I can do both, you know. They're not mutually exclusive." To make his point, he pinned a baggy to a careful note, even as he said it.

And made wide, faux-innocent eyes.

Cain tried to focus on work, sorting this then that and looking into the pile for matches so he could file things away. All while trying to ignore the other man, though when he spoke Cain had to look up. The pin he was using to put baggy and note together ending up stabbing him in the thumb as his attention was caught, "ow god damn it!" The digit was brought to his lips and sucked, brows furrowing angirly at Ever considering it was all his fault.

The thumb left his mouth and violet eyes inspected it seriously before he commented absently, "considering where we are its not shocking." He'd let Ever figure that out if the man was half as smart as he was an a** it wouldn't take much. A stand and he gathered a good portion of his workload to put it away, coming back he started in again moving swiftly but with clear perfection. "You look like a dumb puppy by the way, is that how you make friends?" He smirked while pinning another baggy.

He was adorably pissy, in a way that made Ever somewhat distracted, smiling lopsidedly as he sorted his own pile. He didn't fumble, at least, but maybe that was because he went for the easier bits instead of the hard ones -- which was, in its way, a sign that he really did know what he was doing. It wasn't his first time.

"....trust me, sugar, if I were trying to make friends with you, you wouldn't still have all your clothes on." There wasn't a lick of anything hurt or upset in his voice, just lowly teasing. Or flirting. Or a bit of both. Ever licked his own thumb, pointedly, to make it easier to open a little baggy. Or maybe just to be a pain in the a**.

Just by the fact that Ever was clearing steadily told Cain the other had messed with him. He knew what he was doing though Cain already expected as much. Another file was opened to be read, this one mentioning something about bugs being under skin then burnt out it was hard to make out the writing and Cain sighed. "You'd think they found the person with the worst handwriting around here to make these up." He commented under his breath and went to roaming the pile baggies on the table.

Then Ever had his attention and not much to shock brought an alarmingly smooth retort with him albeit one that made Cain pause.

What.

Reclined back sightly in seat and frowning deeply he stared at the man a second before looking back to his papers. He wasn't sure how to take that and it showed clearly with the confused expression that was now glaring at the file, "shut the hell up and work." That usually solved the situation and he banked on it now as a hand reached across the table to pluck up a bag, obviously avoiding the lick to thumb on a roll of eye and utterance of, "obnoxious old man. "

"I prefer experienced to old." He lowered his eyelashes as he said it, still grinning helplessly to himself. It was an easy kind of flirting from Ever, almost more instinct than intention, familiar and comfortable ground, especially since it seemed to throw Cain off his game. Slowly, he set down what he was working on to just watch the other man.

"How old are you?" The question sprung from him thoughtlessly -- not good manners, but he couldn't quite help himself.

Cain snorted, "I'm sure you do." To bad he was not going to give Ever that satisfaction, though he was now obviously curious when he knew he ought not be. God damn it. The gruff words hadn't worked not at all. Cain's skin crawled in only the way that you knew someone was watching you could make it. A slight shudder and the tingle went away, Cain rolled his eyes, nostrils flared in annoyance and just as his mouth opened to demand a fierce 'what', it closed at the question.

Finally the papers were sat down, roughly, tanned arms folded over his chest and the freckled man glared across the table like a bad cop cliche. "Nineteen, you got a problem with that?" Not that he really cared but maybe he would get lucky and the guy would hate working with 'kids' and just leave already.

"Nineteen's legal." He offered it smoothly enough, looking up at Cain again with his eyebrows raised -- and a smile most certainly playing around the edges of his mouth. Ever's look turned assessing, critical, like he was trying to decide if Cain was telling the truth or not.

"What, are you done working?"
