Magnolia allowed a smile to spread across her face as she took in the sweet scents of the valley and the picturesque view before her. With a nod to herself then and there, the fourteen year old decided that would be the place she'd take a rest from her travels. Plucking Pokeballs from the keychain hanging onto her messenger bag, the lavender-haired girl released the five other Pokemon on her company while Rho yawned lazily on her shoulder.
One by one, a Kangaskhan, Sawsbuck, Buneary, Delcatty, and Meowth formed before her. Beaming at them, she declared, "We're going to take a break here, everyone. Go ahead and play!"
Breaking from her company, her Pokemon sectioned themselves off into their typical social groups as she pulled out a blanket to take a seat on and munch on her lunch. Phi bounced over to Theta to play with Zeta, Episolon glared daggers at Sigma as he curled up with Rho on the blanket, and Delta kept to himself sniffing at flowers of the valley and munching them contentedly. Magnolia felt the stiffness in her calves set in when she stretched herself out on the blanket. She'd been traveling all day the single chance to rest was nice, but so was her driving desire to get back out there and keep walking. She'd try to make this sit as short as possible.

Not far away, a large pokemon tromped through the thick grass at a leisurely pace. The Tropius wasn't going anywhere in particular, though he had headed for the Seatence Valley at the suggestion of his trainer. Said trainer was currently reclined on the Tropius's back, letting the leafy wings shade his face from the sun. Shaun held a digital camera in his hands, flipping through the photos contained on it.
As usual, it was the pokemon that first noticed anything of interest. When he spotted some moving figures off in the distance, he slowed to a stop and turned his head to look at Shaun. "Trop," he said.
The young man looked up. "What's up, Salvo? Spot something?" he asked. In response, Salvo nodded and turned his gaze back to where he'd seen the figures. So Shaun sat up and squinted in that direction as well. There were certainly things moving, but he couldn't make out details at that distance.
At least, not with the naked eye. He put away the digital camera and pulled out a film one that had a strong zoom lens, then trained that on the figures. Once he focused it, it worked as well as a pair of binoculars to sharpen the view. "Yup, that's several pokemon!" he confirmed to Salvo. "A Kangaskhan, a Sawsbuck, a Delcatty, a few smaller ones...odd assortment, which probably means..." he looked around until he spotted a human looking on. "Yup, there's a trainer too. Let's go over and see if they mind me taking some photos."
"Piaaaas," Salvo acknowledged, then started heading in that direction. There didn't seem to be any rush, so his pace was still unhurried, giving the trainer and pokemon plenty of time to see them coming.

Delta was the first to be aware of the human and Tropius in the distance, having wandered a few lengths away from his trainer during his aimless munching on flowers. He rose his head and focused his eyes on the fellow Grass-type before turning and barking a swift, "Saw, saw!" over to Theta. The Kangaskhan, once preoccupied watching Phi play with Zeta, suddenly grew serious and rose in defensive alarm. If, whoever it was, was bringing trouble, she would be the one to apprehend them. Following the domino effect, Magnolia saw the Parent Pokemon rise, and rose herself to question what the problem was.
Striding up to her, the fourteen year old laid a hand on Theta's leg and followed her line of sight. "What's wrong?" she asked gently, receiving a grunt and nudge of her chin ahead of them in return.
Narrowing her eyes to the pair to see them better, Magnolia let a smile cross over her face as she shook her head at the Kangaskhan. "Don't worry, Theta, I'm sure they're not dangerous," she said. Theta wasn't completely convinced, but when the fourteen year old dashed off ahead to join the company of her Sawsbuck, the Kangaskhan hesitated in place and watched her go ahead.
Stopping beside Delta and smoothing a hand on his back, Magnolia raised her other into a wave. "Hey!" she cried. "Hello, hi!"

By the time the pokemon noticed Shaun, he was close enough to make them out unaided. Ho noted that the Sawsbuck and Kangaskhan seemed rather alert, quickly coming to attention to watch him. That made sense for the Parent pokemon in particular, since most often they were protective. He hoped the adult Kangaskhan wasn't too wary of him to let him get a few shots of its baby outside of the pouch. It tended to be hard to get full-body shots of the juveniles.
When the trainer stepped up to her pokemon and waved at him, Shaun sat up higher and waved back, sweeping his arm in wide movements so it would be easier to pick out among Salvo's swaying leaves. "Hello there!" he called to her. "Pardon the intrusion." In a more normal tone he added to Salvo, "It's kind of awkward carrying out a conversation at the top of our lungs, could you speed up a bit?" Salvo grunted, but picked up the pace.
Now that the distance was being closed more quickly, Shaun shouted out again to the other trainer. "I'm Shaun, a Watcher traveling around to see the pokemon of the region. Would you mind if I took a few photographs of your pokemon?"

"Oh wow, did you hear that, Delta? A watcher!"
The Sawsbuck gave her a long blink. He was clueless when it came to humans and their choice of ambition in life, so in reply to his trainer's amazement, he grunted just as Theta had done. Magnolia, somewhat oblivious to his reaction, chuckled and patted the fur of his neck.
"Don't you know what a watcher is, Delta? He's takes pictures of Pokemon. You -- he wants to take a picture of you and everyone else."
Delta grunted again.
Shifting her chin over her shoulder, Magnolia called to her Pokemon, "Hey, everyone! There's a watcher who wants to photograph you, is that okay?"
Phi, Magnolia's Buneary, scuttled back and hid behind Zeta, shivering in fright at the offer. Zeta, blinking at her, instead threw up his little arms and cheered even though he was too young to even know what a camera was. Theta seemed indifferent, though somewhat accepting of it when she tried to, in cognito, make sure there was color in her cheeks by touching a paw to it. Sigma and Rho were too deep in sleep to even break from their nap to answer and Epsilon was too filled with anger to concentrate. Overall, Magnolia took this as a yes.
"Sure!" she cried back. "No one minds!"

By the time the young woman turned back to address Shaun, Salvo had gotten close enough that he didn't have to raise his voice too much. "Great, glad to hear it!" he responded. He was close enough now to see that that the smaller pokemon were a Meowth, a Glameow, a Buneary (though he caught little more than a glimpse of that one before it hid) and the young Kangaskhan. It was cute to see the juvenile cheered at the prospect of photographs. Shaun looked at the adult to make sure she really didn't mind a stranger approaching her baby...was she primping? How sweet!
"You've got quite an assortment of pokemon here," Shaun commented cheerily as Salvo approached the young woman, then stopped. The Watcher slipped off his pokemon, camera in hand. "Thanks for letting me get some pictures of them. This is Salvo, by the way," he added, pointing a thumb at the Tropius, who agreed, "Trooop."
Shaun turned a smile on the pokemon who were gathered nearest. "So, who'd like to go first?"

Magnolia sidestepped away from her Sawsbuck and stared up wide-eyed at the dual Grass and Flying-type in amazement; her arms hung slightly outward from her and her fingers splayed as she rocked back to take in the Pokemon's impressive height. Her mouth drew to a little O as she said, "I've never seen a Tropius before... It's so big..."
Turning back to Shaun, she had prepared to question him about his partner when he asked of her Pokemon. Broken from her inquiry, her pink eyes jumped from Delta, to Theta, Zeta, and her three felines (finding Phi in the fray took a bit of work, but she caught the tip of the rabbit's ear poking out from behind the baby Kangaskhan after closer inspection). The buck didn't seem interested in the least, having returned to munching on flowers, so the fourteen year old pointed to the cheering Zeta first.
"You can take a picture of Theta, my Kangaskhan, and her little brother, Zeta," she said with a smile. "They seemed the most interested."

"Little brother?" Shaun asked, his eyebrows arching in surprise. He hung the camera's strap around his neck and pulled out a pocket notebook to jot down the pokemon's names and familial relationship. "Interesting, usually the juvenile Kangaskhan is the offspring of the adult it accompanies." He tucked the notebook back in one of the pockets and picked up his camera again. As an aside to the young woman he added, "I'd be interested to hear how that particular arrangement came about." Then he turned a smile on the Kangaskhan. "Feel free to either pose, or go about whatever you were doing before I got here." He lifted the camera to his eye, took a few steps back and to the right to frame a better shot, and started snapping photos.
Salvo, now that he was free to do as he wished, dropped his head to the grass to join the Sawsbuck in looking for food. He tended to prefer fruit or foliage to grasses, but there were a few plants dotted around with a good flavor. He started picking along the ground, looking for tasty plants that were big enough to make a decent mouthful for him.

Magnolia dipped her chin twice. "It's, um, i-it's a bit of a sad tale," she said, "but as long as it is fine with Theta and Zeta, I'd be willing to tell you."
The Kangaskhan siblings — specifically, Theta — had an air of awkwardness about them upon being informed they were the first up to be photographed. She continued to fidget with her looks; brushing bits of grass and sticks from her legs, loosening up with a few stretches, and even checking to make sure not even an eyelash was out of place. Now that she was good and ready, there was the prospect of Zeta. He was dusty from rolling around with Phi, but with the little time they had, she flicked away what she could and pulled the little infant up to her bosom and held him in a motherly fashion. Phi, bereft of her hiding spot, took the moment between flashes of the camera to clumsily zip off to another area to hide. Specifically, behind the napping felines still on the blanket Magnolia had spread out.
Delta gave a glance to the Tropius. Small talk wasn't his forte, but he couldn't help asking. ""

Shaun paused his work to let Theta tidy herself and her brother up, lowering his camera to look over at their trainer. "Now you have me even more curious," he told her. "I'd be happy to hear it, if they're willing." He glanced over at the Kangaskhans for approval, noticed they were ready, and smiled. "What a sweet pose! You look great," he told them, then resumed photographing. Salvo stopped browsing to look up at the other grass-type. He swallowed a mouthful of leafy stems and responded, <"Yup! Ever since we left Hoenn, we've been out traveling. Shaun likes to go to different places and see what pokemon are there.">

Theta smiled at the camera and bounced Zeta up and down, who rose his little arms and flailed them in the air excitedly. There was a small lapse in the happiness they shared when Magnolia asked, "Um, is it all right if I tell him, Theta? About your mom?"
The Kangaskhan lowered her arms a bit as a doleful line was etched on her face. With a furrowed brow, she tightened her lips and nodded her head; finding the energy to be more natural for the camera completely lost. Zeta continued to cheer; too young to realize the weight of the story.
"Theta and Zeta's mom was, um, her life was taken by a group of poachers. Theta was old enough to eat for herself but not have a baby and Zeta was recently born, so he couldn't fend for himself when they came. After their mother was was, erm... T-Theta grabbed up Zeta and hid until they left. She's been caring for her little brother ever since." Magnolia kneaded the frill of her sundress dolefully. To know humans could be so cruel bothered her.
Delta paused from his eating and rose his neck upward with a look of shock. "that long?>" he said in amazement. "" He gave his trainer a side glance. ""

Shaun was delighted to take photos of the happy baby Kangaskhan, but the scene didn't last long. The mood was clearly spoiled by the story and the memories it brought on. Shaun lowered his camera again, now regretting that he had asked and upset the pokemon. "I'm sorry to hear that," he said solemnly to Theta. Then he smiled and added, "But it looks like you're in a good place now, thankfully." But it seemed he ought to leave her alone for a while, if only to let her compose herself. So Shaun looked around at the other pokemon, wondering who to photograph next. The Sawsbuck made a sound of alarm, which made Shaun glance over, but since Salvo was calm seemed to be conversing with him, it seemed the surprise must have been at something the Tropius had said. Still, the shocked look was rather interesting, so Shaun stealthily snapped a photo. Then he looked around at the other pokemon. "Let's see, who would like to go next..." he mused, half to himself. "The sleeping cat pokemon?" he suggested, indicating the Glameow and Delcatty curled up on a blanket, napping. "I doubt they'd object, as long as I was quiet." Salvo tilted his head, puzzled as to why the Sawsbuck was surprised. <"It hasn't been that long since we got here. Maybe a couple of years, I think. We don't keep track of time too well."> He bobbed his head and wings in an approximation of a shrug. <"And we didn't travel all of Hoenn, or at least I didn't. Shaun was working with a pokemon Professor, so he probably got around more, but I've only been a couple places. The Prof. captured me at some point and gave me to Shaun just before he left for Zatao. He's nice though, and never in a hurry to get anywhere, so I can go at whatever pace I want.">

Theta allowed a woebegone smile to encompass her features. True, it was a heavy past to shoulder, but hearing those words from the watcher was enough to make her feel slightly better. She accepted the space given to her in stride; clutching a blinking Zeta tight to her bosom and rocking him for comfort.
Delta was too preoccupied in his conversation that he didn't consider the sound of the camera's shutter. "" the Grass-type said, bobbing his head. "" He considered the Tropius's leaf wings with curiosity, adding, "" He let out a disgruntled sigh. ""
Magnolia nudged her chin at them. "Go ahead," she said. "Do you want me to wake them up so you can get a better photo? All they do is sleep anyhow."
Rho, who was only half-asleep, heard her statement and flicked a half-lidded eye open to her. "" he mumbled with a yawn to himself.
"" Sigma corrected. ""

Shaun shrugged at the young woman's question. "If you like. A shot of them sleeping curled up like that is cute, and certainly easy to photograph. But I'll never say no to more poses. As long as the pokemon isn't attacking me," he added with a grin. He circled around the blanket to frame the shot better, crouched a bit, then started taking more photographs. Salvo glanced over at his own wings. <"I actually don't fly too often. Shaun prefers to travel by land, and I don't care either way. I mostly fly if we need to get over a stretch of land that can't be crossed by foot."> He looked back at Delta, his head tilted curiously. <"So you've traveled a lot too? What kinds of places have you been, then?">
