It was a perfect evening, albeit a tad chilly. Spring Equinox was only a month away and one could feel winter leaving the earth to make way for the fresh life of spring. Without needed to see the giant glowing orb, Adonvdo knew that the moon was only a few days past full, and so in just a few weeks, she would hide her face from the world. Night was his favorite time of the day; it was when he felt the most alive and also when his stories resonate best with his audience. Adonvdo Nudade paused beneath the stars, a smile appeared on his countenance as he thought about the stories he would tell this evening. He especially loved the tale of his coat, it was his favorite story and it gave the audience an image to imagine. The cat, the moon, the spirits.

The sun set caused pinks and purples to light up the sky; soon it would be the perfect ambiance for his ghostly tales. Now all he had to do was wait.

Thalia Veraldi

Thalia was really a day-time mare and her bright colors reflected it. It was easier to explore new places in the day time and while the night was nice and everything, it made it rather hard to see when the moon wasn't full. Luckily, the past moons had been reaching the point where they shed enough light during the night so that Thalia had been able to continue traveling until finding some sort of shelter and she hoped that tonight would be a similar occasion.

In that moment, Thalia had turned to the fading remains of the sunlight, watching the pinks and purples blending into the beginning navy of the night sky. Stars were slowly beginning to light up the evening sky and darkness was starting to fall. With or without the moon's light to guide her, tripping was easier to do in the dark and Thalia wanted to find some sort of shelter fast. Turning towards a clump of trees and bushes, Thalia set out to find somewhere to rest.

What she found instead was not any form of shelter, but a stallion simply standing in a clearing. It was his coat that she noticed first, of course, as it seemed to have some sort of picture upon it, which drew her eyes in. She was walking towards him before she really realized it and when she did, she had already asked,
"I've never seen a coat particularly like yours before. Whatever does it say?" She wasn't quite sure what possessed her to ask such a question. After all, normal coats don't say anything--hers certainly didn't, at any rate.

Finally I am getting to these replies! Sorry for the wait!

She was bright to his dark; her pale coat seemed to almost glow in the night. His citrine eyes looked at the mare and he smiled, “Hello Miss. I was hoping to have company tonight and tell that story you have just asked about.” He bowed his head in greeting, “I am Adonvdo Nudade, a traveling story teller from the Asgina Kanehelvsgi herd, which specializes in scary stories, which is what Asgina Kanehelvsgi means.” His voice still held the accent of that herd, but since living here for a few years and meeting an array of soquili, the story teller had dropped using words in his native tongue, unless he was telling the story of his coat, then he kept the original names. “Please get comfortable, the story that is told upon my coat is ready to begin.” The stallion stared at the sky and took in a deep breath; his voice took upon the expressive story telling tone that brought the audience into the story.

“In a far distant land ancient bones gleam white beneath the stars, in stark contrast to the dark cursed dirt that binds them to this world; many moons had passed and the bleached bones had never received a proper burial, which would have appeased the spirit. But the bones belonged to a being filled with U-so-nv-I (evil), who was betrayed by his own brother, who left him to rot upon the lifeless hill, the Evil One’s body picked clean by scavengers of black wings. His death cursed the land that possess his bones, for even though his body long gone, the s-gi-na (bad spirit) still haunts his last resting place, and bestows upon those who dare trespass a deadly A-s-g-i-na-di –s-di (curse).

The moon spirit Geyaguga had been watching deaths that transpired from the curses that the s-gi-na placed upon those who dared disturb him and the wise spirit determined that it was time to intervene; Geyaguga sent one of its best a-da-nv-do di-tli-hi (Spirit Warrior), a cat with a coat black as night and eyes as yellow as the sun’s glow, to banish the u-so-nv-i presence. It was a daunting task that even the most skilled Spirit Warrior would have difficulty in accomplishing, but the cat was not an average Spirit Warrior. Landing upon the hill with his soft black paws, it was intercepted by the s-gi-na, a cloud of blackness and death surrounded the Bad Spirit like a shroud, a substance, having the same density as tar leaked from its open maw, dropping to the earth with toxic ooze. The snarl that appeared on the s-gi-na’s face was one twisted with years of hatred, his voice was raspy from lack of use, ‘o si yo Di-na-da-nv-tli, hello brother.’

Yellow eyes stared at the being that had once been a brave warrior of the tsa-la-gi-yi, there was nothing left of the warrior, only the noxious demon that had replaced him, ‘I have not been your brother since decided to commit evil upon the u-ne-qua (Great Spirit). Do na da' go hv I, good bye spirit who used to be my brother.’ With his last words he opened his mouth sharp teeth reflecting the light of the moon as he swallowed his brother whole, banishing him into the dark abyss of the spirit realm. The evil being was gone, but the curse still remained, and now that it no longer had the s-gi-na to watch it and absorb its evil energy, the curse spread across the land, creating destruction in its wake. Geyaguga, or a being that had the appearance of the great moon spirit cackled in delight of the plight the earth faced and sitting beside him, a being with bright yellow eyes looked at the devastation with a wide gruesome grin."

Adonvdo let his voice trail off into the silence of the night; he looked at the mare with his yellow eyes and smiled.

Thalia Veraldi

Thalia's ears perked up with interest when the stallion across from her smiled and she returned his greeting, bowing her head in turn. Adonvdo Nudade... That was certainly a name she hadn't heard before, but of course, she hadn't met very many Soquili yet, so this hardly came as a surprise to her.

He explained that he came from a herd that specialized in scary stories and a passing thought told Thalia that this moonlit setting was the very best place to tell such stories. Still, it was only a passing thought and she didn't think much on it, for she was quite absorbed in the words that began to flow from the stallion's mouth. Quickly folding her legs underneath herself, Thalia listened closely.

She didn't quite understand the story within itself and if you asked her to repeat it or even to summarize, she would be unable to. All the same, she felt entranced by the stallion's words and her heart began to pound in her chest from the intensity spoken from Adonvdo. During some parts of the story, she would find herself trembling from it, her eyes round.

Then, it subsided and the story was over. Thalia let out a shaky breath, looking at the grass around her legs, which turned silver in the moonlight. Then, with one great bound, she had moved across the clearing and had come nose-to-nose with the story-teller.
"That was amazing!" She exclaimed her feathers ruffled to unintentionally emphasize the honesty in her words. "Have you got any other stories?"

That was his favorite part, the silence after a telling and then the eruption of emotion. His audience tonight did not disappoint, she was enthusiastic with her exclamations and desire for more stories, with an accented voice he replied, “Of course I have more stories, my passionate young friend, and it would be my honor to tell you another one.” Adonvdo Nudade paused as he filtered through his repertoire of scary stories, “This next tale I am about to weave happened near the Kawanii Village...

“Many years ago there lived a beautiful woman, her looks were beyond compare, and many men would travel for miles just to see one of her smiles. This woman loved to bathe each day in the river, it was her morning ritual to wash away the dirt of the previous day and be clean for the day to come. It was unknown to her that her morning routine would change her life forever. As she let the water wash away the grime of the previous day, a prawn burrowed into her leg. A Medicine Man was summoned and he began treatment, but he told the lady that there would be no way to remove the creature.

“Now deformed with a limp, the men turned their gaze away from her, she became undesirable. Alone in her house she began to make dolls. During this time of solitude, her sister and brother-in-law perished in a tragic accident, leaving the lady in the care of their three young daughters. By this time the woman’s skill with dolls was exceptional and she was able to create life like replicas of her three nieces. Each birthday a new doll would be made, a twin of the girl the aunt raised. Years passed and finally the eldest of the three nieces was of marrying age. Countless hours were spent on this last doll, Mikado Porcelain was used to create the face and the eyes were made from precious stones that were then soaked in the river water for a week, so that they too could be washed of the past and be fresh for the future. The doll was then filled with honey so that it was warm to the touch. The eldest daughter carried her life size replica of herself out of her aunt’s teepee, knowing that in her hands she held a key to her resurrection should she need it.

“This continued with the next niece, until it was only the youngest that remained. Twenty years have passed since the fateful day when the prawn made its home inside her leg and the Medicine Man still continued to treat the wound and give the aunt medicine for the pain. One day he brought his son, also a healer, along for the visit. When the man and son were alone, the son exclaimed that the injury was an easy fix and the father agreed, he just wanted his son to see the creature, within the lady’s leg, whose existence and ‘treatment’ paid for their luscious life style. The son then took over the treatment of the aunt, and visited every other day just so he could sneak a peek upon the youngest niece. The aunt witnessing the interaction between the two young people, began to make her last doll. This doll was more special than the rest, for instead of the gemstones as eyes, they were the diamond earrings that had once belonged to the girl’s mother. The ritual for the doll was the same, the soaking of the eyes in the river, the carving of the Mikado Porcelain into the flawless face of the youngest, and filling the body with honey so that it was warm to the touch. The doll was presented to the youngest niece when she left for the young Medicine Man’s (her husband’s) house. He was quite disturbed by the replica of his young wife, he felt as if the doll could stare into his dark soul and know the secrets that lay hidden there.

“The doll was placed upon the piano, where it was able to look out at all those who entered the room. Soon the husband became greedy and sold the eyes to make himself richer; the doll then stared out at the room with empty eye sockets. Uneasy, the husband closed the eyes and bowed the head of the doll. Only a few months passed when he received an offer for the porcelain of the doll’s face, but when he went searching for the doll, it was nowhere to be found. He asked his wife, she did not know and said that perhaps it was the ants, since the doll was filled honey. Throughout the night the husband dug up every ant hill in the garden to no avail. The doll was gone.

“His greed created barriers between him and his young wife, he no longer needed the money she had, but would rather use her as a display piece to show the Village that he possessed the most beautiful woman. Sad and lonely, the wife of the young doctor sat outside the teepee at her husband’s command. Season changed and she still sat upon the decorative bench, soon she stopped talking and her gaze turned downward. Some of the medicine man’s patients even reported that when they sat near her, she gave off a sweet scent that brought out their animal instincts.

“Years had passed and the doctor was aging normally, but he began to notice that his wife was still as young and flawless as the day they married. That night he snuck into her room, she was not breathing. The medicine man left and retrieved a device to listen to her heart, only to find that there was no heart beat within his wife’s chest, but the sound of rushing water. With a start pushed away from the doll just as she sat up and opened her lids to reveal empty eye sockets. A smile appeared on the perfect face. Slowly she opened her gaping maw. Thousands of prawns came flying out of the black hole that was her mouth, attacking the avaricious healer and burrowing into his skin. His screams were drowned out by the maniacal laughter of the doll, who watched with her vacant eyes as the man she married was eaten alive.”

The stallion again let his words trail off and a silence to fill the air. It was a fascinating story, he had heard it once as he traveled through the town and was curious at why the creatures were Prawns and not something more menacing.

Thalia Veraldi

Perhaps it was the fact that Thalia understood the words more easily, that this story had more of an effect on her. She felt herself being drawn in by the tale, unnerved at the thought that a creature had dug it way into the leg of another being. She shivered at the thought and her feathers began to rustle in her unease as the stallion went on.

As the story progressed, Thalia began to shrink in size, her legs folding closer to her chest, while her ears and wings pressed hard against her body. She was all bunched up and looking rather fearful as the story drew to a close and she let out a whimper of mixed fright and relief when it was over.
"You're very good at telling stories." She said to Adonvdo, before turning her gaze onto the moon. How was she ever going to fall asleep now? Maybe she could just turn it into a pleasant conversation, to ease her mind away from the feeling of prawns in her legs.

Moving her eyes back to the stallion before her, she perked her ears at him and asked,
"Why do you think the aunt took her anger out on the youngest child? Was it simply because she was married to a man who had done her wrong, or was the child to blame too?" Suddenly, another thought struck her, "No, wait, maybe the youngest niece was spared. The doll and the niece sort of... swapped places, right? When the doll could no longer be found, maybe it was really the niece who had vanished in the night. Is that it?" She asked eagerly, wondering if there was a sort of happy ending, now that she had searched for one.
