[ And the Victor ]
is somehow this bumbling tart

Frozen sleet wasn’t one of Misuru’s favorite weather conditions to travel in, frigid liquid rolled from the top of her head along her face and fell from the tip of her scarred-pointed nose before she took it upon herself to swipe the slush off her visage and squint her dual-colored eyes into the obscured horizon. All that surrounded the prentice was hazy white that expanded in all directions, hail tore through the air and pelted her slender figure as she gracelessly tromped along the tundra. Despite the girl’s prowess when it came to traversing the harshness of the Zena landscape Misuru found herself at a loss for the conditions that she muddled through, normally compacted snow trembled like living silk with each movement she made and the wetness pierced through her water resistant outer layer leaving her soaked and unprepared to continue on with her endeavor.

“What I need is some place warm or at least something hot in my stomach,” She reasoned with herself out loud, gold and yellow hues raking across the skyline for any telltale signs of nearby inhabitants. It was no use, the visibility due to the hail and sleet limited her range of vision, unless she literally walked into a building the blue-haired ice-ling doubted that she would discover anything of use before she submitted to the cold. Quickening her pace Misuru continued in her chosen direction and proceeded onward until nightfall befell her. Gritting chattering teeth together the long-eared prentice fumed inwardly while propelling herself down a small-blind drop, five feet, twenty, a hundred, the distance wasn’t one she was certain of however backtracking wasn’t an option for the girl. Descending the cliff took concentration, strength, and several swear words when she lost and regained her hand holds. After several yards down Misuru panted heavily and hammered in a piton so that she could just dangle precariously against the crag and rest her exhausted arms and legs before continuing downward.

The Anesthesia

"I'm bored," came the harsh and jarring spit of a noise from the girl setting hunched at Aldren's side. She'd managed to wrap herself in a cocoon of blankets, blearily glaring out of the bundle through annoyed golden eyes. Despite being indoors and next to a simpering fire, wind and moisture managed to squirm its way in through the cracks of their house, leaving the room at a painfully crisp temperature. Efforts to warm it be damned.

"You're hungry," Aldren corrected as he tried to contain his smirk. "But," he turned his own gaze to the door, out to where the firepit needed to cook dinner sat waiting for his arrival. "I guess that's not entirely your fault." When Sepharine huffed in annoyance, Aldren only pouted. "I don't want to go out there any more than you do. Do you hear that rain? It'll be a mess out there for sure!"

Seph flopped to the side, landing with a dulled 'thump!' as the swath of blankets cushioned her fall. "I'm gonna die if I don't eat! Better you go out than me!"

As much as Aldren hated to admit it, the girl was probably right. Poor helpless little thing had no business being out there, and he had no right to force her to starve if all he had to do was roast already-caught prey over the pit. He collected his supplies and what certainly felt like several pounds of frost-protected meat from the cupboard and headed out. If the wind sounded bad from inside, there was nothing quite like the way it smacked him in the face as he made his way out. Tiny droplets of frozen water stung his nose as he moved toward the fire pit. But getting it started would be a whole new chore in and of itself...

It took far longer than it usually did. Far longer than it probably should have, but eventually, Aldren had the fire going. It was only thanks to the hearty wooden overhang and the tall, thick stones encircling the pit that he had much of a fire at all, and after puncturing a spit through the meat, he settled at its side, curling around himself in an effort to stay warm.

Misuru continued to dangle long after night had set and the temperature plunged into the negative degrees, frost encrusted the outer layer of her garments and she simply hung from the rock face like a limp wet noodle. All resolve to descend the heights had been abandoned as she took the reprieve from the climb and rested the lean fibers in her biceps, oblique, and thighs; truth be told the prentice just wanted to hang there savoring the last dregs of warmth that uplifted from the plummet below. Teeth gnashed together in a vain attempt to keep from chattering before dual-colored eyes peered into the void that awaited her. The scent of roasted drippings mixed with herbs was the first thing that caught Misuru’s attention before her eyes adjusted to the darkness and off-colored wisps moved along the veil of shadows that surrounded her.

“Smoke,” question flooded her tone before it gave way to realization. “A village! Aisha be praised!”

Shaking the lethargy from her limbs Misuru focused past the dull ache that had long ago settled in her fatigued body and concentrated on scaling down the rest of the cliff-side drop. Once the blue-haired youth reached the bottom her boots broke through the crystalline crust that had formed over the ground and pulled Misuru into the icy snare up to her kneecaps. A groan escaped the girl and her chest deflated noticeably, nothing in the frozen waste was ever easy, absolutely nothing. Slender fingertips pried into the ice and calmly Misuru dug herself out before continuing towards the barely visible glow of a flame flickering in the distance. The girl’s sure stride closed the gap between her and destination that she sought, within moments the soaked vagabond peered through the sheets of hail mixed with rain only to spot the outline of a young man cuddled near a fire pit slowly turning a cooking spit. For a long moment Misuru just stared at the lad, her heart pounded in her chest and the urge to simply take what she wanted swelled within the confines of her inner being, her moral compass spun out of control and a malicious grin replaced the pensive expression that claimed her visage only moments prior. She deserved what he had and she was going to take it one way or another. Back tracking the dark-haired huntress circled around the rear of the house and deftly ascended to the roof, crouching down onto her hands and knees she crept her way along the building, the small noises she made dampened by the continuous pang of ice against the rooftop until she found a window left unlatched. Perfect.

The Anesthesia

Waiting was never a particularly amusing sport. But it somehow seemed worse with an empty belly and no one to keep her company. Needless to say, Sepharine wasn't unaccustomed to sitting by herself, not that it was any less boring because of it. She tapped her fingers against the wood of the floor, staring idly at the crumbling bricks holding the fire in its place. With a grumble, she pushed herself to her hands and knees, clambering gracelessly to the wooden shelf where she could find the stack of books she'd already read dozens, maybe even hundreds of times.

It was the same selection as always; nothing new or of interest for weeks and months past. As her fingers brushed the spine, a clatter came from overhead. Seph's yip was soft and unprepared, her fingers fumbling against the books as she jumped. Her eyes snapped up. "Aldren?" She squeaked out in alarm, wearily dragging her gaze from the focal point of the sound and instead hunting for a sign of the older boy.

It was almost impossible to hear anything over the sound of slush and hail berating the overhang, the house, and the ground, but Aldren's ears were constantly tuned to his sister's needs. From where he sat bundled near the pit, he couldn't hear the suspicion and hesitance laced in her voice, but knew she needed him nonetheless. He scooted back toward the house, opening the door just a crack to spare her from the brunt of the cold. His voice rumbled lightly over the sounds of the storm outside, "You alright?"

Sepharine's gaze darted from where Aldren stood outside up to where she'd heard the noise. Probably nothing. No one would be out here in this weather. No one had bothered them yet, and it continued to seem unlikely that they would. "Yes..." she hummed out in soft answer after a moment's hesitation. "Just... Hurry up! I'm starving, and you're taking forever!" She huffed and bundled her nose down into the blankets, drawing them about herself for protection.

Aldren chuckled softly and shook his head. "Alright, alright. Not much longer, girly."

Misuru eased her way into the small dwelling, the moment her feet connected with solid footing she sank into a crouch while pulling the window shut behind her. Despite her lack of fear her body was rigid not only from the cold that had settled in her tired limbs but also with the adrenaline of knowing at any given moment she would have to fight if she didn’t plan her moves out carefully. In the back of her mind the girl lectured herself for braving into the unknown before properly observing her quarry, for all she knew there could be ten more men in the house ready to fend off her intrusion with lethal force. Saliva gathered at the back of her throat and thickly the youth swallowed, dainty nostrils flared ever so slightly while slowing her breathing to an inaudible intake of air while her overly-long ears focused on the sounds within the house. Only a moment passed before the huntress felt her mouth tug into a twisted smirk and any dread that had gathered in her posture drained. ‘Only a child, this should make things flow more likely in my favor.’

There were two ways to play the situation; both of them involved utilizing the little girl. On one hand Misuru could surprise the child and use her as leverage against the boy. On the other if she talked to her first and attempted to gain her pity then she could simply sit and dine in the warmth of the house maybe even rest there for the evening. The latter option in theory could work and if all else failed if the girl started to scream she would have a few moments to take the man off-guard as he re-entered the house, he was without a weapon and the odds would be in her favor. Keen gold and yellow hues drank in the form of the little girl from the rafters in which she hid, something was off about the little whelp not that she cared but it was noticeable even from a distance; she was like an animal that had been wounded and left to heal wrong with movements that were awkward and jarring in both lack of momentum and over-compensation. Keeping herself balanced Misuru measured the distance between herself and the archway of the door that the man would need to walk through to enter the house, if she stayed where she was she could literally get the drop on the lad before he had the chance to hone in on her location.

“Please don’t scream,” Misuru began, her voice soft yet firm. “I’m lost and really cold, came from the mountain I would have asked if I could come in first but the guy outside really scared me.” She lied all too convincingly while tensing and preparing for the next sequence of events.

Oh Fluffy I am so sorry about the wait! I just feel so awful about keeping you waiting for so long. IRL chewed me up and spit me out a sore, exhausted piece of Ane meat. Thank you for being so understanding and patient with me.

The Anesthesia
Oh, Ane, my sweet, beautiful land-mermaid. Don't you know not to apologize to me? It's cool. XD I ended up keeping you waiting too, anyway.

She knew she was being ridiculous. Sepharine swallowed, nervously plucking at the book she'd chosen from the shelves before making a hasty and graceless scramble back toward her chair. She'd lived in this town her entire life. Everyone knew everyone else, and the chance that anyone would find reason to break into the shabby abode was likely very small. She was just being paranoid. She knew. Nothing was out there. No one would be that crazy as to brave this storm. She was as fine and safe as ever.

But the noises... Seph mewled, tucking her head under the covers and clutching at the book. Auntie and Uncle's house didn't creak like this. Ii was horrible. Scary. And even if it did creak, someone else was always there in the house with her. Right within line of sight! Aldren wasn't far off now, but she still couldn't see him and lacked the physical capacity to reach him if she needed to. But she was overreacting, she reminded herself, bunching up into a tight ball within her blankets and resting her head on the arm of the chair. Ridiculous, paranoid, overreacting.

"Please don't scream." Every muscle in Seph's body tightened. In that instant, she struggled to dissolve into nothing while still maintaining a lack of any movement at all. The blankets shrouded her vision. All she knew was a voice. A voice that continued in low tones. Female, Sepharine decided after an instant. Not emitting from ground level. Too high. The rafters? She shifted only hesitantly, remaining in her curled state and only barely tugging the covers down far enough to see. Briefly, her gaze flicked warily across the room, landing on a woman (not a large or particularly intimidating woman, Seph noted immediately) tucked within the rafters of her home.

She really did look like she'd just come from the storm... Ice crystals lined her clothing, and from what the younger girl could see of her face, a purple-pink tinge graced her cheeks and nose. Seph shifted awkwardly, slowly nudging the thick blankets down. "You...got lost here?" She repeated, voice low and whispery. Never mind that the woman had seen fit to be afraid of Aldren. Maybe he'd looked scarier from where she'd seen him, or maybe the whipping snow made him look bigger somehow? Seph didn't know. She did know the statement was ludicrous, but otherwise...

"It's okay..." She decided at length. "If you're really cold and lost, it would be rude of us to send you off... There's likely nowhere else to stay for many miles..."

Dual colored hues focused between the little girl’s slight trimmers and subtle nuances in her body language while keeping her peripheral vision locked on the archway of the door, for just a moment Misuru held her position as the child spoke to her. The soft words the youngling uttered were pure bliss to the long-eared adventurer, children were so damn gullible and she was going to take full advantage of that naivety. Slim shoulders tightened rigidly as the scarred huntress lowered herself from the rafters with one hand, dangling above the floor like a spider descending it’s web. Fur clad boots hit the floorboards like a Perzi with its heavily padded feet, just a thump followed by the faint whine of wood under her slight weight.

“Thank you for your hospitality,” Misuru forced her tone to remain low, tender in pitch. Creeping forward the long-eared youth motioned towards the book in the little girl's lap. “That is a really good book,” she stated rather offhandedly then violently trembled and burrowed further into the fabric of her travel cloak. “You know if you enjoy that style of writing I have something that you might like as well,” wrinkling her scarred nose some the prentice fumbled in the confines of the small backpack that remained hidden under her outer garment. Deft fingers plucked away at the edges of the few books that lined the interior of her pouch, a familiar tear in the corner of the binding signaled to Misuru that she had found the proper item she was searching for. “Here we are,” moving closer she simply held out the book and planted her rear on the arm of the chair then gathered up a bit of blanket into her hands and pressed the fabric against her raw cheeks and jawline. “If you don't mind could I sit with you, I'm sure you would warm me up right nicely, little one? Oh, that's right---” clearing her throat some Misuru gave a small bow, her overly-long ears twitching noticeably as she did so. “My name is Mika, thank you for allowing me in your home.”

The Anesthesia
I definitely hear ya. =w= No need to fret, though. Just relax.

Sepharine watched uneasily as the woman swung down from the rafters, landing with a creak that made her head swivel instantly toward the door. The sound wasn't unusual in their home, of course, but it wasn't Seph making it. Aldren certainly wouldn't know what to do with her- either of them- when he walked in... The younger Ice girl couldn't help but swallow down a knot of anticipation.

And yet, beneath that, there was excitement; a little thrill that this battle-scarred, travel-garbed warrior had managed to run into her home, of all places. So perhaps she was dangerous. But as long as no one ended up hurt, wouldn't this be a fine story to tell... someone? Whoever would listen. Aldren wouldn't take it well, but he was seldom one for risk-taking at all. The woman would simply have to be her guest. Aldren could just go suck a toe or something. Seph sent the woman a sheepish smile as she sat up, shoulders bunching in a half-shrug. "It's... not my favorite. By I've read it less than the others, so-"

The warm, purplish blush that crept over her cheeks came on almost instantaneously as the woman pulled a new book from her pack and offered it to Seph. The younger girl stared at it as if it was something alien, confused and hesitant by the book's sudden appearance. Slow fingers reached out to touch it, yellow orbs flicking briefly to the woman before falling back. "You'll... really let me read it?" In retrospect, it seemed only fair. Seph was being nice by allowing her in. No reason she shouldn't be allowed to read the woman's book, if she wanted to. But in the moment, it seemed only strange.

She distracted herself from the thought instantly, scooting herself against the opposite armrest and tucking herself in to take up as little space as possible. "Yes, I- Of course." She tossed a flap of blanket over the older Ice female's frame. Seph's fingers found and coiled around her arm, giving a careful tug to coax and pull her down into the newly-unoccupied chair space. "Please do. It must be horrible to be out there in this weather, uhm..." Another blush, and a glance toward the fire. "Mika. It's nice to meet you. I'm Sepharine. My brother calls me Seph."
