It didn't make any sense. Gretchen was positive the iPod she'd tucked into her bag was in working order when she had left. At least she was fairly certain of that fact, and what scattered memories she had of the events leading up to her departure did not account for it having been damaged. It should be working now, but as Gretchen sat on the bench of a picnic table out near the training field fiddling with it, there was nothing in the way of responses from the music player.

She supposed, given she didn't know how long she'd been in the pod, that the batteries could be dead, but she'd plugged it in before she'd gone to bed! It should be full, right?

"What the Hell?" it came out louder than it should have, frustrated and borderline whiny. She just wanted to listen to music, was that so much to ask?!

America, stretching not to far away and getting ready for what would hopefully be a few hours worth of spars that would leave her exhausted and obscenely satisfied with herself and her shower, lifted her head at the exclamation. Straitening up, she noted that the girl was unfamiliar and very likely new. Grinning, she walked over to peer at what the girl was messing around with.

"You okay, hun?"

Gretchen jumped at the voice, absorbed with trying to get her iPod to work, and jerked her head up. "Oh." A sheepish smile turned into a grin. "Ah, kind of? I think my iPods busted. It's my taking a charge anymores." She poked at the botton again, before tugging the earphones out of the jack and stuffing them in her pocket.

"Didn't mean to disturb, sorry." Shaking her hand free of the cord she offered it up to the other girls. "I'm Gretchen, newbie Death hunter."

Shaking the girl's hand, America beamed at her, "America Jones, Moon Division." Settling down beside her, she went on, "We don't have regular electricity. No AC or DC to be found, we run on some runic juju, anything you got that needs to be plugged in or charged is gonna have to be converted."

The information was followed by a sympathetic grimace, "Usually getting it converted is even more expensive than the thing you want runic'd up. When I was a trainee I got lab folks to load up my phone with music, woulda gone crazy without it."

That was an interesting name, very unique. Gretcheb blinked, waiting beat to see if the girl was pulling her leg(ha!) but didn't seem to be. "Nice to meet you!" It was said with a flash of a grin, but that faded at the news that her electronics were next to useless here. "What, really?" Forlorn, she gazed down at the iPod. "Well that's a damn shame."

But there was hope! Maybe. "Who do I talk to about that? The runic thing?" Gretcheb was pretty savvy with tech, but this was all very much over her head. "Or about loading my phone with music? Is it what you get it what you get? It can you pick?" So many questions. Gretchen just missed her music.

"Dwight'll usually mod things for people he doesn't hate, even gives pretty girls a discount," America grinned, giving Gretchen a flirtatious wink. "Loading your phone with music I usually just wave some money around the Life labs and look real pathetic. I think it's a bit cheaper and faster if you don't make an exact list but just give them a genre, plus you'll get new stuff that way too."

Tilting her head, America took in the leg, "Did that happen in the pod? Been mentioned of that happening a few times when something goes wrong."

"Dwight," she repeated, making a mental note of the name as well as everything else America was telling her. She could get her iPod working with the help of this Dwight guy, but it would cost her. She could get her phone filled with music, and that would also cost her, but not as much. Price, at this point, was a little redundant this Gretch didn't have any money yet. It couldn't hurt to pay this Dwight guy a visit though, get a quote. And perhaps stop by the Life labs.

She'd been lost in thought when America's question pulled her attention back to the present and she blinked, glancing down at the prosthetic before shaking her head and smiling. "No, but that's a really frightened thought. I know how it feels to wake up one limb fewer than you remembered, and it's quite the shock." She laughed, stretching the leg out to show it off better. "But no, this was from a car accident when I was younger."

Inspecting it closely, America hummed curiously. "So like," she asked after a long moment, "is it like missing a piece of your body or getting new different pieces, or like both?" For someone so thoroughly grounded in their own body, the thought of losing part of it seemed dire and tragic, but Gretchen didn't appear to be either of those.

Those were some pretty deep questions, and Gretchen hesitated, lips pused thoughtfully as she considered how best to answer. "Well, yes and no, to both." She brought a hand up to scratch at the side of her neck, gaze down on her leg.

"When it first happened it was awful. I mean you wake up, and there's this important piece missing, and otvwas overwhelming mostly. Like now what do I do?" She was smiling again, soft and thoughtful as she curled fingers around her thigh above the prosthetic. "But I went through therapy, and physical therapy, and a good attitude is crucial to recovery. Now I don't really notice, I mean it's gone, but I have the fake, and I can do pretty much anything ya'll can."

She looked up and grinned. "Now I get to be the bionic woman." And how cool was that?

Listening, America considered it and while the thought of going through similar seemed a sort of nightmare, she didn't find pity for the other woman. Just simple respect, maybe the moreso knowing that she may not have deal with with it as well as Gretchen.

With a laugh, America nodded, "Yeah, you fancy as hell. But," her expression went solemn, "you're gonna want to take up sparring and courses. Probably more than most trainees. You're not a normal human anymore and the things you might face are far ******** from it."

Apologetic, she went on, "Not to be lecturing, but Moon hunters take the safety of the rest of y'all kinda serious."

America's somber expression sobered up Gretchen's in turn, and she nodded, smoothing a hand over the chrome front of the fairing before sitting back again. "I know." They'd told her that after she'd woken up. That she was going to have to work harder than the rest of her peers just to keep up.

"That's kind of normal for me though, you know? I've always had to work a little harder just to be as good as everyone else around me. This won't be much different." That confident smile lit of her face again. "I won't be anyone's burden, least of all my own."

If that maent getting out on the training fields twice as much as anyone else, then that's what she was going to do!
