"Really Shydyl," the mini mare sighed as she trotted alongside the bobcat. "We really need to find some better targets. Those last two were so weepy, I think they might just flood the entire valley before they're done. Honestly, there's no such thing as a clean con anymore. Just get in, get the goods, and get out. I mean the world is full of marks for the picking but the after affects are getting a little tiresome." She tossed back her mane and frowned attempting to reassess their situation. They were on the move once again and they were going to need a new mark, not only to keep up their trade but also to keep them entertained. Viatyl did get bored easily.
For the bobcat's part - she signaled ahead quietly. Something caught her attention, a new smell on the wind. Whatever it was, something to look out for.

Paelor made is way down the path, whistling to himself. He was, undeniably, bored. His bag of sparks was tied around his throat, just waiting to be used in a good game. Unfortunately, he hadn't run across anyone foolish enough to play him recently. It seemed that, with the arrival of his fellow imps, folks were beginning to get more knowledgeable with the game. Specifically, they were learning not to play it with the imps. He needed to learn a new game, he knew... but sparks was his love. He paused in the whistling long enough to sigh. Ah, well. Maybe there was a sucker out there... somewhere....

The bob cat slinked off the trail and Viatyl followed with light hoof falls. Once they were buried within the foliage the mare whispered quietly, "Is this our next target or something I should actually be concerned about?" since meeting the bob cat the widow had experienced and unprecedented level of protection and safety. And she was grateful for it too. As a mini she was sometimes viewed as an easy target for some, a fact which may or may not have had some impact on her decision to play as a con artist. However all that stopped as soon as the bob cat had opted to adopt her. It was some type of fate their running across each other. At the very beginning the cat may well have considered adding the mini to the menu, but from the second they saw their shared mark, the widow's hourglass, the pair had become inseparable. Viatyl paid back all Shydyl's kindness in full by making sure the cat had anything she needed aside from food (after all, Shydyl was an excellent hunter and Viatyl wasn't the best at being quiet and motionless for long periods of time). Shydyl had continued to look out for her and protect her from much larger soquili and other creatures that may have been a little cross after Viatyl's....tricks. Shydyl was the muscle while Viatyl was the plotter - but they both had cunning to spare. At the end of the day it amounted to a number of broken hearts and empty wallets along their trail.
Right now Viatyl was curious if this new presence would require her sly abilities or Shydyl's brute strength.

Some sixth sense had Paelor slowing down and taking in his surroundings with a bit more caution. As an experienced gambler, he always knew when to hightail it out of whatever mess he had gotten himself into. Half the time he could flee before his playmate realized he had been cheated or to do much about it if he did. Of course, that tingling always popped up right before a big jackpot... so it was a little... confusing...

Shydyl inhaled deeply and smirked. She'd finally determined the scent. It was an imp of the male variety, her companion's specialty. She inclined her head and nodded at the road, a clear go ahead for the mini widow.
"Alright, so I'm up," Viatyl said rolling back her shoulders. "Any recommendation for the approach?" she asked although she already had a plan in mind. A curt nod to her hoof signaled Shydyl's agreement with her initial plan. "Agreed, no one can resist a damsel in distress," she said shaking out and mussing up her mane while Shydyl splattered her with some nearby mud. "Oh, careful with the claws - last thing we need is a real blood trail...Okay," she looked over herself and deemed her body to be roughed up enough. "Give me a 2 count head start then you come in on your part..."
With that Viatyl started off with a well practiced limp towards the path calling out in her most piteous voice, "Help! Please, someone! Help me!"

At the first cry for help, Paelor stiffened. He quickly darted into the bushes and knelt where he would be hidden from view, wanting a clearer idea of what this threat would be before acting. It wasn't beyond him to help out a damsel in distress, especially if she was easy on the eyes, but not at the risk of his own neck.

Viatyl bit down on her lip and looked around as she stumbled down the path. She winced so that her eyes would start to water and wondered to herself, Where the hell is that target?!? It should not have been too difficult, not if he was close enough for Shydyl to ID positively.

He frowned a bit when he saw the little mare limping into the path. Something didn't seem quite right. He waited a moment to see if there was anything chasing her, though at the slow pace she was puttering along he doubted that she would have made it this far. After a moment, he ventured out of the bushes as quietly as possible. "W'at 'appened 'ere?" he asked, keeping his voice light and friendly.

Finally... Viatyl thought, biting down on her lower lip as she limped towards the male. "I was...a-attacked," she managed. "Back there, in the woods...." She whimpered when, on cue, Shydyl let out a roar that echoed in such a way that she couldn't quite be sure how close the big cat was.

He jumped, out of reflex. Not because he was scared, oh no. "Well, 'ell," he muttered. "T'at sounds like a bobcat... Ye'd best get movin'." He eyed the mare in front of her. She clearly couldn't run. He could high tail it out of there and leave her behind to distract the bobcat. He'd get away without a scratch... but she was a pretty little thing, and she would likely be mighty grateful for the assistance... He sighed, heavily. "C'mon. Ah passed some caves back t'at way," he nodded in the direction he had come from. "Yeh kin 'ide out t'ere. S'ould be sound 'nough, if yeh cover up the entrance... Lean 'gainst meh."

Despite her best training, she found herself frowning at the way the stallion talked. Took her an extra second or two to process it, but she surely nodded and with a well practiced smile of gratitude, leaned against the stallions shoulder, grimacing at just the right time to maintain her illusion of a bad leg injury. "Thank you," she whispered as they started to move.

"Don' t'ank meh yet," he murmured. He still wasn't sold on helping her. What he had originally thought was jewelry proved to be simply markings now that he was closer to her. Then again, being so close to her was rather pleasant... She didn't smell like sweat and fear, like he might have expected. Just earth and... He blinked as that sank in. He helped her walk as he processed this new thought. She smelled like mud... wouldn't a bobcat have caught her? Scratched her? Unless she had just spotted the cat and ran. She could have fallen and sprained something... but why didn't she smell like sweat or fear? He had run into a crazy mare once, and the filly he had helped near reeked. So did he after the encounter. That wasn't a scent one could fake...

Viatyl narrowed her eyes as she spotted the cave, "We should...hurry," she said between gasps for air.

"Rig't," he muttered, keeping pace with her. Something about this whole situation was starting to rub him the wrong way. His instincts were screaming at him, bad stuff as going to go down. He glanced around the area, making sure there were enough branches he could use to hide the entrance to the cave.
