-younger brother, Samael, younger sister, Zela
-kids refer to each other as Sal, Sam and Zel, which may get confusing to people who don't know them well
-Sal and Sam were always very close. when they were younger they spent a lot of time together. like most young boys, they enjoyed horsing around and minor mischief
-as they grew, Sal grew out of it and became more responsible, but Sam did not. Sal kept trying to help his brother shape up, but didn't quite manage it
-when Sal reached 10 Turns, he felt obligated to pick a craft, like most boys his age did. His father was a Harper, so Sal decided to become one as well and moved to the Harper Hall.
-he didn't anticipate that Sam would not take well to them being separated and began to act up more. Sal felt bad for leaving his brother, and wrote frequent letters to Sam to encourage him to join harpercraft so they could be together again. Sam did not do so
-shortly after, the Revolution happened. By the time news got to the Harper Hall, it was as much rumor as fact, and it was hard to pick the truth from exaggeration. he got that two of the Weyrs had been converted to Wherholds, but how much of the Revolution was real eluded him for a while. He was left feeling confused about the whole situation, but eventually decided as long as Thread was being fought, that was the important thing
-Sal set to his studies with a will. he started with general lessons, like most apprentices, and eventually found he had a knack for scribe work. besides the general copying of records that all apprentices did, he learned to write and maintain records, file them and find them as needed, and generally assist in the record halls.
-he did keep in touch with him home and especially Sam, and since Fort was so close to the Harper Hall he could sometimes go to visit his family. Sam continued to act out and refused to pick a craft, which made Sal grow upset. He continued to try and guide his brother, but to no avail
-by the time he was 16 Turns, he was considered a senior Apprentice, sometimes allowed to supervise junior apprentices as they copied records, and hoped to be made Journeyman soon
-then he got a letter from Zela saying that since Sam's behavior had gotten so bad, their aunt Z'radi was bringing Sam to Malvren to learn discipline. Sal felt like he'd failed his responsibility to look over his brother, and decided to ask to go along, even if that meant leaving his studies at the Harper Hall
-once at the Wherhold, both boys joined Candidate training
-for the first time in many years, the brothers got to spent time together. for old time's sake. Sal joined his brother in exploring the beaches nearby, and the pair stumbled on a clutch of fire lizard eggs. each boy took one, then successfully hatched and Impressed a flit

-black hair, pale skin, blue eyes. keeps his short so it's out of the way when he writes, but otherwise takes little care of it and allows it to get a bit messy. since he's been mostly inside the record rooms for a while, his skin has not gotten much chance to tan

-Sal assumes he's heterosexual. He's from a rather traditional hold where that is the normal and expected sexuality. the assumption is reinforced by the fact that at one point in the Harper Hall he had a crush on a girl, but has not felt that way about a boy.
