Pain, heartache, loss, numbed the mare as she walked out of the sea, her mane fizzling as the flames tried to come back after being submerged in water for so long. She had done her duty, but the loss of all those she cared for and loved, it was a burden that she would live with for the rest of her life. How long ago did the events happen on Annu? Hours, days, months? It felt like only a moment ago that she dove into the sea as the volcano erupted behind her, coating all those she loved in ash and lava. The sand crunched beneath her hooves as she stared blankly at the new land stretching out before her, she did not see what was there, her mind was set upon the past.

“You embody what all fear. You are death and destruction. You are the volcano that will put an end to us all, but you are not evil. You are the end of a life cycle, without you, rebirth would not be possible. You will leave here during our darkest hour and find Cassia, for you cannot have rebirth without death. Thera, you and Cassia are symbols of our Great Phoenix Goddess, both vital representations of the cycle of life.” The old mare stared off into the distance toward the volcano, “We have grown complacent; we are no longer the society we were in the past. It is why you and Cassia are our only hope.”

Thera looked down at the reflecting pool, her flaming mane flickering and casting shadows in the cavern. Her body’s coloration resembled that of flowing lava and she could see why it was believed she was the living symbol of death by the destructive force of the volcano. When she was young she had asked her elders why they did not flee, why did they wish to stay and suffer from the volcano’s wrath? Any other group of elders would have laughed and told her that she would understand when she was older. But not the Elders of Annu, they considered the young foal’s words thoughtfully and had admitted that they had not considered leaving for it was not the wish of the Goddess, as it would be considered a great honor from the Phoenix Goddess to be forever solidified in ash. They would sacrifice their lives so that the future can be reborn. Another told Thera that many had forgotten the old ways and no longer worshiped the cycle of life and it would be the young who carried the burden of passing the Flame on to others who felt the call.

The old mare’s voice brought Thera’s thoughts back to the conversation, “Thera, listen to me. The end is near and I want to make sure you prepared. Cassia will be given the Sun Disc and the Mask of our deity. She will believe that she is leaving this land alone… Stop. Before you say anything, I know how the two of you feel for each other. You will see each other again if the Goddess wills it. When you reach the land across the sea you will spread our knowledge and our story. There are powerful beings at work and this tale must be told.”

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Thera’s thoughts came back to the present. She had made it to the land across the sea and now she will do as she was told, but the memories would not stop. Again and again she would relieve the tragic events. That was her price for living.

Why was she who she was? Why must she carry the teachings of her people alone? Did she hope that Cassia made it out alive? Yes she did, with all her heart, but she was not sure if Cassia could have escaped. It had all happened so quickly, safe one moment and the next death was coming toward them. And she learned about who she was, why she was the one chosen. Her mother, her father, more lives she held on her conscious. The memories took hold once again.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
The old mare finally stopped talking and allowed Thera to get a hold of her turbulent emotions. Her and Cassia were to be separated and Cassia was to believe that Thera had died during the destruction of the volcano. It could not happen, she vowed to tell Cassia, for her heart would not be able to handle it if she did not say something. The fiery mare turned her attention back to the old crone, “I know what you are planning young one and I approve. I always thought it was cruel to separate the two of you this way, just don’t tell them that you told Cassia that she would not be the only one to leave the Island,” The ancient mare looked around the cavern, “I think it is time to we head up to the surface.”

Together they walked in a pensive silence, the bright light of the sun caused them to pause at the mouth of the cave and blink a few times. The day was truly lovely.

“Thera…. Do you know why you were named thus?”

“Because of the Goddess of Volcanos and my untamable spirit?”
The older priestess of Annu smiled, “Those are two reasons,” her smile slowly diminished, “I believe that it is time you knew about your mother and father…” The two walked closer to the beach, the volcano casting a vast shadow behind them. “Your mother was named Thea, she was a priestess of Annu just as you are. She too was of Flame. One day she was walking upon the beach and met a stallion of the sea. He was like no one she had met before: playful, caring, a smooth talker. In a short amount of time your mother was in love. Because of this untamable passion she had toward the kelpi, she slacked in her duties. Soon she vanished all together. Months later your basket was outside our temple walls. We knew you were Thea’s daughter because you looked just like her with the exception of your kelpi traits. Years later she returned, asking to see you. She said that she was dying by the same poision that had recently just killed her mate. The other priestess who met with her did not want to believe her but since you were her daughter she agreed to the encounter. Hours had passed and you still had not come before your mother and by the time the priestess sent another message your mother was dead. The original priestess who was to deliver the message had gone missing; we later discovered her soulless body in the ocean…” The crone shook her head, “You are named of your mother and father, and also of the great volcano goddess. Your father was named Randillion, he was a prince of the seas and he had a quite a bit of enemies, but he had loved your mother and would have loved you. He was worried that his enemies would hurt you to get to him, so he and your mother made the choice to have you be a Priestess of Annu.”

Thera stopped walking, there was too much information to absorb, too much knowledge to take in. She had a mother and a father who were murdered because of an unknown enemy.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
So much death. Perhaps she was not the cause of the volcano exploding or the one who poisoned her parents, but she felt as if she had to take the blame, for who she was in her soul. And why did she ever believe she could be happy with Cassia. Who could ever love death and destruction and still be pure of heart and mind?

The memories of the last day of Annu would not leave her alone. But she knew that soon she could move from the spot on the beach and begin her search. She would travel across this new land until she found Cassia or discovered that her love had perished in Annu.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
“Child I know this is all overwhelming, but the truth must be known. We of Annu keep our secrets well and that will lead to our deaths and the death of those who call this Island home. Here take this egg. It is from the sacred chickens, he or she will be a wonderful familiar to you…” The old mare placed a pouch around Thera’s neck, it was tiny and barely weighed a thing. A sad smile began to form on her mentor’s countenance when the ground began to shake and a loud boom pierced the air. The volcano was erupting. Terror filled the kelpsuti. “CASSIA!!!”

“No! There is no time! Cassia is safe, you must leave now, take to the seas before the tsunami comes. GO!” The mare was ushering her towards the water, “Keep swimming and don’t look back. Do you hear me? Don’t look back. Go Thera, may the Phoenix watch over you.”

“Goodbye…” With those parting words and an ache in her heart, Thera of Annu jumped into the sea. Never once looking back at the Island that had been her home.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Thera had swam for days, only stopping for short rests. She had been fleeing the memories of those she left to die. And she knew that only when she stopped would she have to deal with their ghosts. Instead of thinking about Annu, she had thought about the egg around her neck, would it survive the journey, was the depths of the sea harming it in any way? Was her body giving it too much heat? It was much easier to worry about the egg than to worry about the turmoil in her soul. When she had reached land, nothing but the memories of the past welcomed her. They barged in, not even letting her have a moment of peace. But they were done now, gone to reside in the back of her mind. She needed to learn where she was and the easiest way was to ask. Just as she began to walk toward the woods that surrounded the beach, rain began to fall. Her flaming hair crackled and sizzled as the drops came down, soon all the salt of the sea was washed from her, only to be replaced by the mud of the forest floor.

The mare felt that the weather was mimicking what she felt in her heart and she welcomed the cold rains. It helped wash away some of the pain. “Cassia, I will find you and we will be together again… Please Great Phoenix Mother, please let my darling Cassia be safe.”
