It was going to take a lot of practice, Joy knew, to get used to Bert. His size wasn't bulky and he didn't weight a ton but effectively wielding a bladed weapon was never in her school's curriculum. She might have had better luck with a pair of arnis but that's the draw of the dice, and at least Joy was resilient.
she told her bonded, not even knowing what sort of specie he was because he rarely answered her inquiries.
I'll keep you alive as best as I can. Joy hadn't heard Bert talk enough to recognize the tinge of regret in the reedy voice. If she had, she would have asked about it, and he would have inevitably just shrugged in response.
Back at the training field, Joy debated on going up against a training dummy but she saw she wasn't alone. Brightening at the prospect of a living, breathing opponent, Joy jogged up to them, unfazed that it was a much larger man. "Hey, you looking for a sparring partner?" she asked.

"Yebah!" Joy beamed, slowly deciding that the training fields was going to be her favorite stomping ground (until she found a way to get herself a bicycle in this place.) Apart from becoming accustomed to using Bert, she was getting to see all sorts of weapons and, quite frankly, found it the wide variety pretty damn cool.
"The name's Ligaya, but I go by Joy or Lee or Happy. And this whatever-he-is is Bert." The bladed shovel was summoned, though secretly Joy wouldn't have minded if they needed more than a mental command to bring them out. A cute little catch phrase would have been more than a-ok in her book, but she wasn't about to say that. "Ready to rip?"

"I'm Rep" he clarified helpfully before eyeing the strange weapon the other hunter wielded. He mentally classed it as a type of spear - though it very much resembled a shovel and was probably very helpful as a result - and moved to summon Tracey.
As always lately the axe summoned oddly, without the usual grace, stuttering and twisty as he formed, twisted up still with the green and golden whip.
"Bert's interesting looking. Show me how you attack with him?"

"Rep," she repeated and found herself grinning. "Nice name. Reminds me of how we used to call a referee, or a priji-" the tagalized brand name never finished as she stared up at the large hunter's weapon. Some might have been more considerate of their bonded's feelings but Joy and Bert hadn't quite progressed with their relationship beyond You-Woke-Me-Now-What. "Astiiiiig!" she breathed in awe. "Now that's a weapon."
There was a distinct grumble then an intense pressure of resentment at the base of Joy's neck. Bert was not happy his bonded was mooning (heh) over another woman weapon. In response to both the weapon's reaction and Rep's request, Joy lowered the shovel practically to the training field ground and swung upwards. The flat of the shovel head aimed for the sun's jaw.

The shovel connected with Rep's jaw with a loud THUNK and he felt the rattle of the blow straight through his shield, accidentally biting his tongue in the process. "Hahaha that ******** hurt." he said, giddy with surprise. "I'd never have ******** thought."
He spat some blood onto the dirt and hefted Tracey up in his hands.
"Normally he's great, of late I'm no quite in shape, he's a bit ******** big for me to handle." And as it to demonstrate, he swung, the attack going well wide and so slow that it was simple to avoid.

Joy's brown eyes blink, unbelieving of the large man's claim of being out of shape. It was only when the axe's swing is made does she see what he meant. Rather than avoid it, the trainee raised her shovel, blocking the strike quite easily with her own weapon.
"Shouldn't take too long for you to get back in shape," she said, "You don't forget how to use your weapons, right? Like riding a bike!" she beamed, and this time she thrust the bladed edge forward at Rep. She couldn't skewer him, not even discounting FEAR shields, not with the amount of strength she'd used.

"You'd think so." he said. "But apparently if something takes a dig right at your bond between you and your weapon you can fall like, out of sync. I need to be places I'm no sometimes and its like being drained." It was very frustrating and even as he leapt into the air for another attack, bringing it down in an overhead cleave.
"Its a pain in the arse." he added.

Joy mulled over the idea of being out of sync with her weapon, the feeling of being drained and wondered out loud, "If it's like getting cramps during your period," the rest of her words were cut off with a grunt. She'd raised to block the downward strike with Bert but Rep had size, momentum, and physics on his side.
Joy hissed as the impact sent ringing pain shooting down her arms. She jumped back, trying to shake the pain off and put distance between them. "Hoo, if this is you off your game, you must really massacre s**t up." Deus was filled with amazing people, Joy could only hope to one day match them.

Rep looked utterly horrified at the concept of periods, thrown completely off guard for a moment. It was probably one of the last things he ever wanted to think about it and he quickly tried to put it out of mind by leaping once more into action, quite content to let the woman block and do what damage he could through her shield.
"I'm far from the best, even at top of my game." he said, and it was true, there were other hunters on the island who made him look like the puny trainee he was.

"Awww, modest too~" Joy chirped after grunting at the large man's recent attack, thoughts of cramps and periods and blood in general still in the back of her mind. Her weapon only regarded it with mild curiosity but focused again on the spar. "Personally, I feel better that we got some real heavy hitters on our side." Oh Joy, so new, so freshly unpodded, so unaware of the numerous drama and conflicts amongst the people in Deus. She went in next with a feint, shifting balance at the last minute to aim the shovel's blade at Rep's shin.

"As long as you don't get between them and what they want to do." Rep said with a grin. "They are dangerous but they aren't ******** scared of turning that dangerousness on other people if they are so inclined. Especially Cael. Get under his feet and he will ******** murder you." He didn't feel the need to add that he himself was rather prone to picking fights with people who irritated him too much, seeing no reason to try and pick further fight with someone he was already sparring.
"So aye, its always a double edged sword." He bent to rub his shin. "******** you can fair swing that thing." he said, before hurriedly switching his grip back to Tracey and swinging back as hard as he could.

She looked thoughtful "I will be sure to keep that name in mind and stay outta their way." Joy ought to have taken her advice when it came to this spar as the axe came her way and cleaved right into her FEAR shield. It felt more like it dug into her body but she saw she was still whole.
"Remind me not to get in yours next time, too." Joy laughed, shaking her head clear, or tried to at least figure out which of the multiple Reps was the real one as she brought the shovel down in an overhead arc.
