Gritting her teeth, the mare dug her tail into the wolf’s neck causing it to fall limp against the ground. She wasn’t having a good morning at all. While she was resting, a pack of about five wolves decided to sneak up on her and she was lucky that she knew they were coming. All those years of training taught her to never ever sleep soundly. She was always alert even when she slept so as a result one of the wolves lost their life causing the others to scatter away in fear. She had no problem killing anything. It was second nature to her. She didn’t even have to think about it. If something threatened her life, she would take it out no matter what the consequences were.

“Simple creature.” She muttered as she pulled her tail out from the wolf’s neck seeing the blood drain out along the ground. She needed to clean her tail before more predators caught wind of the smell. She trotted hastily towards an area where she knew housed a stream. When she arrived, she took a deep breath and gently put her tail into the cool water. She watched as it got washed away before curling the wet thing back up against her side. She never really used it as a tail like most other animals did. It was her weapon. The thing that kept her alive so many times and would continue doing for years to come.

Glancing at her surroundings, she noticed she was in a small meadow. It wasn’t appealing to her in the slightest, so she crossed it slowly thinking about the time she was in one with her father.

”Daddy look a flower! You should give this one to mommy.”

“How many times do I have to remind you it’s father not daddy? No your mother doesn’t need any. Flowers are weak gifts. They die too fast.”

“Sorry…father..but..mommy likes flowers.”

“She will get over it. She knew that I’m not the type for those simple things.”

“Okay..I’m going to pick one anyway.”

Her fathers words still burned deep into her skin. She remembered giving her mother the flower and she loved it, but after that she was punished. Her father beat it into her head that flowers brought about weak feelings and emotions. Needless to say, she never touched a flower again nor did she ever want to.

She froze after crossing the meadow at the sight before her. It was a swamp; a murky stinky swamp. Usually she wouldn’t mind crossing something like this, but she didn’t know what was on the other side. The only thing she could see was death on the other side. A barren wasteland if anything and it wasn’t very appealing to wander over to.

Standing there, she weighed her pros and cons not knowing that something else was approaching to make her morning even more interesting.

The sunlight played across the soft striped fur across Kingston's back as he slunk carefully through that same swampy patch of forest, his head bobbing eerily a few inches above his neck as he swung it side to side, focusing on some tracks he was following. A wide sunny grin was permanently affixed to his features displaying a long row of sharp teeth and the poisonous color of his needlelike fangs. The air around him was grey and murky, the swamp forest dingy and rotting but he seemed perfectly happy squelching his way through the muck and brackish water, peppering his stomack and sides with flecks of mud. Kingston made no attempt to conceal his passage, why should he? His manic courage was bolstered by his large size, his rather intimidating features, and the comfortable weight of the axe nestled between his jaws. He feared not for his safety. The long handle of his weapon made it complicated to negotiate through the narrow spaces so he was keeping to a rather wider game trail and spinning and prancing sideways as necessary.

A flash of electric blue caught his gaze and his ears perked foreword as he turned towards it, his eyes narrowing in predatory excitement. His muscles tensed with anticipation, there was someone over there!

He stopped just out of sight, hovering in silent curiosity as his wild eyes sized up this stranger, circling, he emerged from concealment just behind her and stood wrestling with his indecision. He didn't want her to think he was about to attack her, so after a moment's thought, he let his axe drop to the ground with a dull thead, its wickedly sharp edge sinking into the soft hearth like a hot knife through butter. He straightened his bow tie, tilted his head in what he thought was an appealing fashion and smiled as wide as his mouth would go, his eyes glimmering, his tail swishing and waited for her to notice him. To any outside observer, he looked positively murderous, but Kingston could never really comprehend the terror people often felt in his presence, well there was the slightly embarrassing business of his rather violent bursts of temper, but they often seemed frightened even before he tried to take off their heads... In fact, it was often their unjustified terror which invited his rage. His vision would seem to go red for a moment, and the next, his new friend was high tailing it away as fast as his or her legs could carry them. It was really rather discouraging, Kingston had never really had a friend, as a foal he had had a few playmates, but they never stuck around for long either. At this gloomy thought, his ears drooped slightly, but he stubbornly and bravely maintained his gruesome grin in the face of his internal turmoil.

He was nice, he was fluffy, he was wonderful friend material, and he had always thought that first impressions were terribly important. When this mare turned around she would have no doubt from her very first glance that he was friendly.
