Horace was juggling his tekkos. Or rather, he was tossing them between his two hands with a look of intense concentration on his face. The Doctor had of course questioned his single-minded pursuit of simplistic hand and eye coordination, but Horace persisted and, ultimately, she could only suggest that he do something less fanciful, not force him. On a whim, he added one of his bracelets to the tossing, and then another. Faster, faster.

The tekkos flew up into the air, clicked together, and then one shot off at an alarming speed. Horace cursed as it rather gracefully sailed out in an arc and smacked into someone's shoulder. Far too late, he realized he should have simply desummoned Dr. Jannisari mid-flight. For now though, it seemed more polite to go over and get her instead.

{I am not a projectile weapon, horace.}
[Anything is possible if I try hard enough, Doctor!]
{perhaps you should reconsider your endeavors.}

"Ah, sorry!" he called out, cupping his hands over his mouth. He jogged over to the other hunter and grinned sheepishly, rubbing a head along the side of his head. "Couldn't find anyone to spar with, so I was, uh..." He trailed off. Horace vaguely recognized the boy - possibly from Twitter. While he was good with words, pictures and faces were not his forte.

"I'm Horace Nokoni. You looking to spar or anything?"

Thud. Noah yelped and turned, startled, looking for the source of the unexpected assault. Usually people didn't just come at you, even on the fields, but he probably couldn't expect that courtesy all the time, and anyway in a real fight the monster wasn't going to warn you first, and, "stop that, Laz," he muttered, because the smack hadn't been hard enough to dent their shield but the weapon had started up a low, affronted, burbling growl immediately.

Laz muted his growl a little as the offender jogged over, calling an apology. See, Noah said, it was an accident even. "Yeah, it's fine," he answered, "I was looking for someone to spar with too, no problem," and started to offer his hand for a handshake.

The gesture paused briefly but perceptibly as Horace introduced himself, and then Noah nodded and put on a smile and said, "I'm Noah Andersen."

Horace had noticed that pause and realized why as the other man introduced himself. Noah Andersen: Al's friend and, more importantly, Peyton's boyfriend. Oh s**t, he was mad about the shirt. Horace, he chided himself, you just don't go about ripping off young ladies' shirts - especially if they were attached. The ladies, not the shirts. He hadn't known Peyton had a squeeze at the time and he had just been so into the spar... It wasn't as though he's made a deliberate, well-thought-out decision. He shook Noah's hand firmly.

"Nice to meet you in person. You've a hound weapon, yes? The one who tells jokes? You are Peyton's guy, right?" A pause and Horace shifted slightly to pick up Jannisari from the ground. "I'm sorry about the whole, uh, shirt thing." And because he felt awkward, Horace launched immediately into another question.

"What's Laz look like?"

"Nice to meet you," Noah agreed a little awkwardly. "Yeah. That's us. I mean, that's me."

Laz snickered. WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN OOOOH AND AAAHHHH?

Oh my god not now! Noah was pretty sure he should know what the shirt thing was about, especially if Horace thought he was going to be upset about it, and it was really his own fault for avoiding his own girlfriend that he didn't know. He smiled weakly and said, "It's ok, accident right," taking a stab at what might have happened.

ABOUT THREE INCHES! Laz delivered the punchline without being asked and went off into further snickering over his joke. Noah could feel his face getting hot and hoped that the blush wasn't too painfully visible.

The question about his weapon was a welcome distraction; he raised his left hand and summoned. The heavy, stained choke-chain wrapped around his wrist blurred, disappeared, and fuzzed back into being in Noah's hand as the meat cleaver, its sides webbed with something reddish and its top and handle edged with bone, runes glowing a clean soft white in contrast. "This's Laz. Lazarus," Noah said, and held the blade up, back on slightly less awkward territory.

An accident. "Not exactly," he muttered, but Horace nodded his head and smiled at Noah anyway. Until the other hunter turned red. The reaction made Horace wonder, but he decided it was likely best not to comment. Instead he ignored it and watched as Noah summoned him.

"Hello Laz. This is Dr. Jannisari - unfortunately no jokes from her." He held his hands out for a moment, palms facing towards him, before dropping into a fighting stance. He darted forward, reading to try and pummel Noah - because maybe he fought like his girl and that could make this pfun. But Horace's foot caught on a rock and he fell heavily forward with a yelp of surprise.

Flushing, he tried to scramble up quickly. "Well... that was an embarrassing start."

Noah nodded warily to the other weapon, a little surprised.

WHY IS HE TALKING TO ME, Laz growled, sounding unsettled. HE IS NOT MINE, I AM NOT HIS TO TALK TO.

I don't know? Noah jumped back as Horace lunged and then tripped, barely suppressing another yelp. This was embarrassing enough already. "Are you okay?"

He started to offer Horace a hand up, then stopped and backed up as it occurred to him that maybe it was a trap, a way to get him into hitting range. Still, he waited till Horace was on his feet again to swing at him, a little tentatively.

He flushed harder at Noah's question. "I'm fine." While it had never come to be, Horace would've definitely used an offer of help as an opportunity for attack. His sharp eyes looked at Noah, watching him for shifts in movement. Unless a spar was specifically designated top Horace as a 'learning' type, he believed in fighting all out. Monsters wouldn't wait for you to learn.

As Noah came at him, Horace thrust his arm out, knocking Laz's blade away from his body. The edge of it still dragged down the back of his arm sharply and he grunted. He tried to use Noah's momentum against him, moving into the other hunter, free hand reach out to strike at his side. Then he twisted, trying to move past him. The thought floated through his mind that he should really find a hand-to-hand teacher, but until then, Horace made do.

"Sorry, I'm still not very good at this." He shrugged and his grin turned a little wry.

Noah stumbled slightly, jolted into a sidestep by the punch to his side. He tried to turn with it, swinging Laz down and back and hoping to catch a solid blow on Horace's body, but managed only to graze his arm again. "Me either," he admitted, "we spend a lot more time in the labs than on the field."

YOU SHOULD FIGHT MORE.

Noah didn't answer Laz's not-quite-gentle mental prodding verbally, but scooted back, watching Horace warily. He really shouldn't feel weird about this guy, he told himself. He did anyway.

"Life stuff always seems really interesting to me - is there a particular field you wanna get into?" Each division had their own set of specialties within; it was fascinating. "Death just means a lot of absorbing information, maybe? I dunno, just spend a lot of time in the library." Although that was a lot of personal choice as well. Knowledge is power, et cetera. The more information he had, the more in control he felt. "Of course, too much of it is classified."

He rolled his arm back, feeling the lingering sting of Noah's hit. "You should fight more - it can be ridiculously fun." Moving in quickly and closely to Noah, he angled his body, snapping his elbow up and catching the man on the chin. Arms down, elbows now tight into his body, he watched Noah warily. It didn't make sense to back off again not when they both had such close range weapons. ....Unless he felt like tackling him.

"I'm working on a project to research long-term Fear and Insanity effects on vegetation," Noah said. "I mean, when I'm not fetching things or washing things or putting band-aids on people." He sounded a little defensive about it, but not displeased. "Death does, like, collating field stuff, doesn't it?"

The blow to his chin rocked him back on his heels, and his return shot was more like a shove with Laz's blade than a real swing. "That's what Laz says," and now he was visibly somewhat embarrassed about it.

"Yeah, death does a lot of-" He waved his hand about. "-paperwork. I like it." He grinned brilliantly at Noah, and at Laz. "Laz has the right idea. He's a good dog, that one." For a split second, Horace seemed to hesitate, but then his fast slammed into Noah's side. In the same motion, his leg tangled with the other man's. He shoved him. Hopefully, the combination would work properly. Fighting was fun, and Horace was trying top show Noah that by knocking him on his a**.

"It'd be nice is the island was self-sustainable," he said conversationally.

Noah hit the ground hard, puffing a startled breath. He didn't try to jump up immediately, instead rolling to the side and swiping Laz at Horace's legs before he pushed back to his feet.

I'M A GOOD DOG, Laz agreed enthusiastically. Noah groaned. "Now you got him going. Yeah, I want to try and get some sustainable crops in, preferably some companion planting to maximize yield and minimize impact, but before that can happen we have to know if the Fear levels on the island will have any detrimental effects and if so how that might be prevented," he paused suddenly, and his expression when from animatedly enthusiastic to sheepish, "um, sorry, I guess you got me going too."

Horace jumped to the side, but Laz's blade still sliced into his leg and he hissed. Immediately afterward, though, he chuckled at the idea of Laz being an excited doggie. Stil he was a zombie dog, it was probably a good thing Laz was only excitable in Noah's head and not running around with bits falling off. Could zombies reattach their bits? Hora'ce's knowledge was rather limited to the Resident Evil variety.

He listened intently to Noah's talk, but frowned as the man cut himself off. "Ah, don't be sorry! I don't know what companion planting is - skipped argi class to take typing - but it sounds like you have a plan." He paused and shrugged. "Might regret it, but if you need a hunter guinea pig to test island-grown food, let me know. Worst that could happen is I'd die." Horace grinned as though the thought of dying was something vaguely funny, like accidentally switching up your left and right shoes in the morning.

If this were not a spar, Horace would've asked more questions. But it was, so instead he swung forward and outward, putting the broad side of his fist into Noah's ear.

"Companion planting is when you plant complementary species for maximum efficient use of space and to balance soil composition, the classic is corn, beans and squash," Noah explained. That was the short version, but Laz's insistent mental tugging reminded him that this was not the time. Horace's offer startled him, though, and he lowered the blade a little to stare at the other man. "I wouldn't feed anyone something that'd damage them, but you better not say that to some of the other guys in Life," he started.

The punch caught him off guard, and again he stumbled, head ringing, and swung Laz almost blindly. PAY ATTENTION! the weapon snapped.

"Why would I not say it to the other guys in Life? I mean, that's why any of us are here - to be of use to Deus even if it means discomfort or death." He paused and tapped Jannisari against his thigh. "Maybe it's a bit naive of me to assume that Lifers would only use me in a professional capacity." Horace shrugged; he tended to be an 'assume the best and then assume the best even after you've been fooled' kind of guy.

Horace swung back in close to Noah and elbowed him sharply in the side.
