Lazuli floated at the edge of the reef, gazing out into the blue. His friends had headed that way some time ago, into the darkness to search for a new wreck, but he had stayed behind - and staying behind was something that he found himself doing more and more often. Something held him back from going out with them; he didn't quite belong. His parents were not Corsairs, and he hadn't gone through the same rites of passage as his friends. Slowly, Lazuli was beginning to realize that, little by little every day, he belonged with them less and less. They would always be friends, but treasure hunting was not his passion. Trading was not his passion. Medicine was not his passion, and neither was negotiating with the victims of his robbing friends - tiny though his friends were, they had a habit of picking on soquili much larger than they. Lazuli had met far too many and seen his father and his friend Eoin calm down more than half of them.

What exactly his passion would be, Lazuli did not know. He helped his mother with medicine when he could, but he was not all that good at recalling remedies. He didn't like to sing, either, like some of his other friends. His passion was lurking somewhere out there in the sea, and he didn't know how he was going to find it.

Sighing, Lazuli watched the bubbles float up to the sunlit surface of the water. If he turned around, he knew, he'd see the reef of the Grail, bright and teeming with life - tens of aquatic soquili, thousands of fish, and too many sea plants to count. And among all them, he was lonely. There didn't seem to be anything for him here, but it was his home. It was whatever was out there, in the ocean, that he had to find. Maybe, someday, he would like to be a treasure hunter, but that day was not now.

Giving his tail a little swivel to keep him floating in one place, Lazuli looked down at the bottom of the reef. Somewhere in one of the alcoves under the coral, the shell that had kept him safe as a foal, as little more than a wish, was sitting down there with his meager store of treasure. Where do the shells even come from? It was a question he vaguely knew the answer to. The Merlok, some ancient folk, lived out in the depths in their sea kingdoms. But it was a legend, wasn't it?

Lazuli blinked out at the blue. Maybe it was a legend he was after. He had never met a human, and the Merlok were just as foreign a concept to him - outlandish creatures, things of myth. He knew the humans were the ones who brought the ships, who wrecked on the reefs and destroyed the homes of thousands when they did, and the Merlok were supposed to be humans with fish tails... But the spirits had seen fit to give them magic enough to make those special baskets. They would be fascinating, that's for certain, he told himself.

She was a streak of orange, black, and white among a bright world of neon colors as Anemanie played within the confines of the reef. Zooming between rocks and around schools of fish. Sunlight filtered down through clear blue water dancing off her skin.

Ane was a cheerful mare without a car in the world and it showed. Laughing and giggling she raced around and around inviting the fish to swim with her.

The young mare's laughter drifted along the current perking up most of the sea life that herd it, and soon she had a small school swimming with her. The fish covered a wide range, and came in all colors and sizes. The school and the mer played vigorously, darting this way and that as they circled the reefs. This was the only life Anemanie had ever known, laughter, joy, and play it had shaped her into a carefree mare that spent most of her life without a touch of sorrow.

As they swam, circling the reefs and slowly drifting out making their route wider each pass, something caught her eye. A flash of brilliant white against the deep blue of the ocean made the mare halt suddenly, ebony mane waving like angry waves in a storm around her head for a moment before they calmed and drifted with the currents once more. Her fishy friends decided the game was done and darted away back toward the reefs.

She stayed there, only the occasional wave of her tail, breaking her motionless form. Anemanie watched the stallion, starring out into the distance, ears swiveling .. completely unsure of what her next action should be.
