New school, new year, same old s**t.

Claire was slowly beginning to really, really hate her life. She just couldn't catch a break, everything always seemed to go wrong. Not majorly mind you, just wrong in a way that there was always little things that seemed to be off for no good reason at all. Just little things that kept building and building, ticking at her over and over again, goading her, trying to get her to erupt, explode!

Ever since she had stopped fighting she had been super stressed out, sparring had always been her most effective form of release, but ever since the accident, she's just been too gun shy, she can't bring herself to step into the ring with anyone else, and the heavy bags just didn't give the same authenticity that fighting a real opponent offered, it was driving her crazy.

She had began looking towards less desirable methods, in order to relieve stress, namely cigarettes and meaningless flings, she knew that her thought process was beyond stupid, and she also knew that after the first few times that she went to bed with some random stranger be it a student from school, or a slightly older individual who should know better, that she was gaining nothing from her shameful acts, she had slowed down, but by no means had she stopped. Her actions had gotten her in trouble with her mother, who in turn kicked her out of the house, she was now living with her father, which was the reason for the change of scenery. She was a bit of a last minute addition to the school, but her admittance had been easy, her father had been on the board.

Now here she was amongst the hustle and bustle of the first day of school, walking through the campus' large courtyard towards the bulletin board, where student names as well as class schedules would be listed. She pushed through the crowd and glared down anyone who dared give her any trouble, but when she reached the board, she was soundly disappointed, see it was always the little things in life that were set in place to throw her off. Her name was nowhere to be found, must be because she was a late entry, which would mean that she'd have to go to the office and ask for her schedule there. Claire cursed under her breath. She'd do that later, she could be a little late, for now she'd need try and salvage her even mood before things spiraled out of hand. So walking behind the bulletin board without even tried to hide it, Claire stepped out of sight, reaching into her pocket for her lighter, and into her other pocket for her box of cigarettes, from which she slipped a single cig out without revealing the box.

She pressed the white stick to her mouth taking it between her lips, and struck the lighter, once. twice. three times. And nothing. Out of juice.

"s**t."

Paled, purple fist were beginning to bruise even worse than they already had been before as new scars were beginning to break into the scabs of old scars, further darkening the already abused fists. This didn't stop the dark haired woman as she picked up the pace of the already extraneous morning workout. Sometime after the sun peaked into a small bedroom window, it took Hayden only a few seconds to throw on a hoodie for the chill morning and grab a well-used bag before jogging to the school building that was no more than a mile away. A few years ago she wouldn't have minded taking the family van, but after her recovery running was definitely her second favorite thing to do. Her first, of course, being the hands-on sport kickboxing. She could hardly say for sure how long she had been in the school’s old gym using the workout room to prepare for the long day ahead. Or at least that was the excuse the sore girl used knowing full well the first day of school was always a walk-in-a-park. A bore even seeing as most knew her but the hated name games always managed to make an appearance in every classes. Regardless, these moments did manage to calm her nerves and numbed the pain that she often felt before and after workouts.

Finally coming to slow, this was the first time the girl actually glanced at the wall clock. Which wasn't too necessary seeing as this was all such a familiar routine that she knew now was the best time to stop in order to get a shower in and began the day before any late bells. Attendance was something that was fairly important to her. Catching her breath only for a brief second longer, she didn't waste much time with a quick shower and changing into her outfit for the day. Although the shower was gratefully refreshing it did little to nothing to soothe the new scabs that were forming on to skin that hadn’t quite returned to its original tanned color. ‘Nothing to worry too much about’ was her common thought as she performed a half-assed job of throwing bandages over her fist.

The moment Hayden stepped foot out of the gym and into the hallways, she was immediately drowned into the hustle and chatter of other fellow students. Greeting many familiar faces of various classes and checking the class schedules, Hayden deemed this year may not be so bad.

She carried matches just for this sorta thing. Claire had actually became pretty good at using them too, as weird as that sounded. Matches weren't exactly the most mechanically complex of tools in this day and age, but she had learned how to do a few tricks with them. One of which included striking a match with just one hand. She thought it was impressive the first couple of times she had done it, now not so much. It had lost it's appeal to her, now it was just a novelty.

Another thing that had lost it's appeal was the cigarette that hung from her mouth, she no longer wanted to smoke. For one it was clearly against the rules, and some students had already peaked behind the board when they heard the spark of her lighter, and two, the urge had just left her, she didn't feel like she needed it. Her body seeming to decide that maybe she wasn't as stressed out as she thought, even if her lighting up had just been a precaution. Claire stepped from behind the board with a sigh, and gave it one final glance, deciding to snap a picture with her phone before heading off, unlit cigarette still hidden between her lips. She'd do away with that soon.

She turned away from the board, and prepared to head back inside, but something caught her eye, or more specifically, someone

If she were to be honest, it was the eyes that caught her. Those intense emeralds that felt so familiar to her, it was like she was looking back into the past. Because she knew that she had starred deep into those intense eyes long ago. The bandaged fist made her heart clench, both in concern that she wished she could squash, and in dread of recognition. As she scanned the face of the owner of both the hands and the eyes that captured her, Claire felt her throat tighten and her breathing becoming slightly labored. She had to take the cigarette from her mouth to keep from dropping it or inhaling, and swallowing it. As she realized that she did indeed recognize the girl.

'Hayden?!?!?'

No. No. No. Claire shook her head, it couldn't be true it had to be her imagination, she wanted this all to be false, she had spent to long running away from her past for it to catch up with her here. Claire wanted to just turn and run, ditch school for the day and begone, but she knew she couldn't just do that. She was practically starring the girl in her eye, she'd be a fool to think that she had gone unnoticed, so instead she decided to pretend. Feign ignorance, act like she didn't know the girl. Besides, Claire's appearance had changed a bit, she wore many piercings now, and she had cut her hair a bit shorter. Hell Hayden looked different as well, if it weren't for the bandaged hands and those intense eyes Claire would have never recognized her. Not in a million years.

Well she had to come up with something now, and she had a cigarette in her hand so why not? "Got a light?" Claire asked, raisiing the cig up to show the girl, Hayden what she was referring to.

Approaching the all-mighty class bulletin board that held the future of many of the students, herself obviously included, Hayden only gave it a brief skim. Hardly worried about her classes, or school in general, none of these things seemed to matter much anymore. It was more of a thorn in her side, the pebble in her shoe, a stain on her shirt-- more of a pain than it seemed to be worth. Yet, at least it was somewhat fulfilling. That alone was enough to keep her at the mundane task of keeping her grades up. Well, that and the fact that she technically wouldn't be allowed to fight if she allowed herself to slip up. Or so they claimed. There was absolutely no way they'd let her go seeing as she was there top fighter. It wasn't much to ask of her even when she herself made a vow to keep fighting until she eventually fought a long awaited rival who had seemingly managed to drop off the face of the Earth.

Nevertheless, the routine remained and was to begin again. Joining the crowd that had begin to look for classes, Hayden distractedly nodded at some question presented to her by some faceless guy in the crowd, considering she was fairly sure he was asking about her participation in this year's MMA club. Her disinterest came from the fact that it was actually a pretty stupid question for one and secondly an uncanny feeling of being watched kept the dark haired girl from giving the young man her undivided attention. Thinking nothing of it at first, seeing as she was in a dwindling crowd of people who were most likely scanning other students for familiar faces like she was also doing. Although unlike most of the curious gazes, this particular one held purpose and was almost overwhelming. Slowing her steps to an eventual pause, it didn't take long to locate the source of the staring, this person might as well have been holding a blinking neon sign.

Darkened jaded eyes stopped at a golden head of hair and an even more golden, glowing set of eyes. If she were to be honest, it came as nothing of importance at first glance but quickly melted into realization along with a moment of uneasiness. There were obvious physical changes of both a few years of aging and maybe a few additional piercings that she couldn't remember, but there was no doubt about this person. Hayden could never forget her no matter how much time had passed or even how the girl decided to present herself in this moment in time.

It was Flippin' Claire Tearis! A warning would've been nice in contrast to the helluva headache that was beginning to develop. Would've been real nice

Hayden might have even had been happy to see the old face if another source of an emerging rage wasn't currently bubbling somewhere deep within.Claire obviously had seen her first, to which Hayden almost got her hopes up of the other remembering her as well, but the previous staring could have also been a strange coincidence if she truly didn't remember her. And that was what she hated the most out of all of this was: the chance that the blonde had forgotten her. The longer she held the stare the more many other feelings of a strange mix of anger and delight arose with this, but Hayden wasn't too sure which emotion she wanted to act on.

As if Hayden needed any other signs of confirmation in both of her suspicions of the stranger being Claire at the sound of her voice and Claire possibly remembering her, she hardly missed the question the other presented to her. Feeling her voice catch and a sudden need to bombard the other with questions of her own, she settled with a simple answer the moment she felt herself regain composure. "I, uh, don't smoke." Hayden answered smoothly enough to pass as an average, nonsmoking student who was simply caught off guard as she glanced from the godforsaken stick in the other's hand back to golden eyes. Hesitating to say something more, or really anything that would form into civil words to the seemingly oblivious young woman, a brief moment or two passed before Hayden physically allowed herself to walk away without any real destination in mind.

Claire wished she had thought of something more to say, or that she had at least sounded better asking her question, she sounded like she was drowning, suffocating on some raw emotion that she either didn't know how, or forgotten how, too process a long time ago. It was this emotion that kept her bound by Hayden's gaze, and it was a little intimidating, watching the myriad of emotion that flowed through Hayden's eyes, some scaring her while others peaked her interest, anger and interest, confusion and sadness, Claire felt like the lowest form of life for what she was doing, they had been through too much for her to just pretend that she didn't know the girl. But she had no choice. She only knew how to run, she was a coward after all.

Maybe Hayden understood that, because her answer represented freedom for Claire, Hayden didn't smoke of course. She wasn't slowly trying to kill herself after all, and her not having a light, should have been all that Claire needed to know in order to escape freely, but as Hayden waved her off and turned to walk away. Claire felt her chest clench again. That piece of her past calling to her. Stupidly, wanting her to latch on to the girl before her.

Who was she to deny what her body demanded? "That's probably for the best eh?" Claire said to Hayden's retreating back, she akwardly scratched at the back of her pierced ear, a nervous habit as she looked off to the side, searching for something else to say, trying to prolong this contact, that was shattering some of the walls she had put in place. "Hey," Claire called, testing again, sticking her toe in the freezing waters. "Do you think you can show me to the front office?" She asked, trying not to sound too hopeful, afterall she didn't really have anything to hope for, nothing good could come of this. "If it isn't too much of a hassle that is." Claire added, she was a fool, she'd admit that. A stupid, bumbling buffoon. But sometimes she just couldn't stop herself from making bad decisions.

There was something empowering at being able to walk away from what was an obvious unseen force that wished to pull Hayden back to a haunting past. It took every bone, every muscle, every cell, to attempt to forget everything that was Claire. It didnt seem to be too hard when fates would have it that either the blonde behind her had actually forgotten her or was a coward. Both in which did little to nothing to recover the distant image of a once upon a time Claire that Hayden constantly dreamed would make a triumphant return. A Claire she was no longer sure she had ever met or constructed in a dream as reality seemed to show some conflict.

It probably didn't matter she wanted to convince herself of and was doing an alright job before being interrupted from her thoughts. Hayden hardly had gotten three steps in before that voice called to her once more causing her to unwillingly stop again without any permission from her brain, to her dismay. At this point the dark haired girl was feeling greatly conflicted seeing as the hope was that the short answer would suffice to any and all conversation that was going to be had between them playing the role as strangers. In fact, thats what this whole experience felt like, it was strange and foreign but oddly tugged at a familiarity.

Seeing as she had involuntarily stopped, the statement followed by a question still lingered. The question was oddly strained, probably simillarily to what she imagined might mirror her own voice if she were to humor the other. Hayden didn't dare to look back at the other fearing Claire would have little to no problem reading her nerve ridden features. Before she knew it, it seemed her body gestures were working just fine in contrast to her head that wanted nothing more than to allow the other in and her voice that couldn't make a sound. Even her eyes she feared would betray her as they scanned the girl's face for anything. Instead a subtle negative shake of her head seemed to be the only response available to her disposal. "Sorry. Was the next response before she attempted the trek away again.

Ok that hurt a little bit, she could be woman enough to admit that. She also wasn't to proud to admit that she had been foolish enough to believe for a second there that when Hayden stopped and turned around, that the other girl would be willing to give her the time of day. It was selfish of her to expect that really, and she was also going to admit that she didn't deserve that kind of attention, and she be at the girls feet thanking her for being graceful in staying as calm as she had been. Because at any moment she could have easily exploded on Claire, and there would have been no words that Claire could of thought of that would have been sufficient enough to justify her actions all those years ago. Hayden turning her down in such a graceful way was more than she deserved. So Claire would just accept it and back down for now. Not just for now, maybe she should back down for good. No longer talk to Hayden, she should just leave the other girl alone.

But still.... "I understand. Sorry for bothering you." Claire called, she prayed that Hayden would stop, turn around again, off her some other words, but after a moment she stopped watching the other girl, mentally forcing herself to turn away, she was being truly pathetic now, and there was nothing more pathetic than the way she had already been acting thus far.

"Do you have a light. She mocked herself, her face twisting in disgust, years apart and those were the first words she'd said to the other girl. No apology, no explanation of why she had vanished. Nope, she asked for fuel to feed her poisonous habit. Claire wanted to just die, right there on the spot.

But instead of dying, Claire lifted the cigarette she held in her hand, back to her lips, and started digging for her matches, she really needed it now, her head was starting to throb, the beginning signs of a migraine. Finding the office could wait, she expected to be late to class anyway.

It wasn't too hard to not speed away from the uneasy situation that housed the disappointed blonde seeing as her legs felt of lead and slowed her usual purposeful, swaying pace. But it was a great challenge to train her eyes on her sneakered feet rather than giving into the urge to steal a glance at this said blonde who Hayden was fairly positive was still staring at her. At this rate she couldn't imagine the next time they would have the opportunity to pass each other in the halls, that is if either them actually made it a concrete goal to not avoid the other or to not start a fight, in her case. As much as she wanted a fight, this wasn't exactly what she had in mind. Unfortunately, this thought wasn't enough to convince herself to willingly study the blonde haired young woman's features one last time.

The further away Hayden moved from Clair, the clearer her surroundings begin to form and more important matters came back to mind, more specifically class, even more expanded on that: perfect attendance. Perfect attendance equaled greater chance at not upsetting her coaches. Not upsetting her coaches both kept her on the team and allowed for a release of stress which was needed now more than ever.

Faking a grin to the few students that passed and glancing at the classroom of the first class of her day, English, Hayden braced herself for the day that remained ahead. Now that Hayden was fairly successful in getting to her homeroom without completely collapsing or having a mental breakdown, she strolled to the back of the room. She was here to make nice with her grades with that, not being at all concerned with any real class participation. Shortly selecting a seat it didn't take to long before the girl was sprawled across her newly assigned desk with tons of worries crossing her mind at an ungodly speed. One thought that spoke loudest strayed back to her last interaction with Claire. Honestly, all past emotions aside Hayden could've easily directed Claire towards the direction of the office. It was actually the least she could do and it began to upset her some at the thought of Claire unable to find the office and the more ridiculous imagining of Claire having to drop out and disappearing once more. Or worse. Ending up in similar classes without any warning. Thankfully, this thought didn't get too far as the introductions began.

She was feeling better now. After having smoked a cigarette, well two actually, she felt a little more even. She was missing the numb feeling that smoking used to give her, but the way she was feeling was just as good. Not exactly high, since she was passed that point in her addiction where the cigarettes really affected her that way, but she definitely gave a lot less of a ******** right now. Which was fine by her, she just needed not to care, for the rest of the day, or maybe for the rest of her life. Yea, that's be good.

Where was she? Well, Claire was on her way to class, yea, she had ended up finding the office, more out of luck than anything else, she hadn't really been looking for it, she had just stumbled upon it while walking around aimlessly. They had her schedule as expected, and urged her to hurry on to class since she was already way past late.

Claire had entertained the thought of ditching her classes for the day, still was entertaining that very thought as she entered the open doorway of her English class, interrupting the teacher who had just began introducing himself to hiss class for the year. He looked at her, clearly judging her with his eyes before she had even gotten the chance to say a word. "Name?" he asked, she could tell by his tone that whatever conclusions he come to in his mind about her, weren't good ones. "Claire Tearis." She said, holding her chin up, and inhaling deeply, buffing up her chest. Taking pride in her name, seeing as she shared last names with her father, and her father was this man's boss. The teacher, looked over his attendance sheet for a moment, found her name and scribbled a note, before waving a hand at her. "Find a seat." He said, and Claire snorted at him before turning her eyes to the sea of desk, searching for an open one.

Why are you feeling braindead?

Shortly after the class began, which could easily be around roughly twenty-three minutes ago --But who was timing-- The man (Mr. Stevens or Steel...Maybe?) didn’t seem to have anything more important than his own oh-so-captivating life story. But no one dared to stop him from talking about himself in fear that the actual reason of why they were there and what was to be expected of the class would be the next topic. Sometime during the droning it became more obvious that many had joined Hayen in the undeclared group nap that was becoming more and more appealing to even the most studious students. Unfortunately, before they even had the chance to lay their heads against the cool surface the door opening captured everyone’s undivided attention at the newest distraction.

”Name?” The man began in an annoyed manner and the response was met with great confidence.

Along with eighteen other heads that shot up, hers was definitely the most violent as she had just about given herself whiplash along with smoothly spilling various sheets of notebook paper in every which direction at the newest arrival. ”Ms….” The teacher began briefly before pausing to glance at the list of students, ”Taylor…? Is there anything wrong?” He asked with both a genuine curiosity and something that closely resembled worry for another’s health at the brief insanity that flashed in Hayden’s jaded eyes. This of course turned the attention to her as she could only sheepishly respond with a feigned cough and a mumbled half-hearted apology. There wasn’t too much else that she could do to hide her sudden shocked-induced embarrassment as she attempted to wiggle out of the eyes of the onlookers and retrieve the papers that spread to the desks surrounding her, one of which was tragically empty.

How strange it was that this very girl who stood boldly in front of the class, head held high and all, was the same girl that Hayden up to only an hour ago feared she’d never find again. Hell, Hayden doubted she even existed. but now, Claire was on full displayed and Hayden wanted nothing more than to see the blonde disappear once more. Well, not really, just to not be in her current class or the one after that. Or any of them. Maybe another face in the crowd, because at least then she did exist even if Hayden debated whether or not that was a good thing as a flood of memories continued to pour in.

”Ms….Taylor…? Is there anything wrong?”

Taylor? Claire turned her eyes to the girl that the teacher was eying and she spotted just who she expected to see, the coincidences seemed to be in such a way that they had to align that way. Claire set her golden eyes on Hayden watching as the girl shuffled about. excusing herself for the distraction she had caused with an apology. Claire kept her eyes trained on Hayden for a moment, watching her for a moment.

If she were to be honest. She was slowly growing a bit angry with Hayden. She knew that the girls reaction had to be because of her, and that was just her being vain. She knew.

'Does she really hate me, that damned much?' Claire thought, she felt insulted and that offense turned into even more anger. Claire made a face at Hayden, her brow furrowing. 'Well ******** her then.' Claire thought angrily. It is probably fair to say that Claire is a little more internally belligerent after she's smoked.

"Find a seat, don't be late again. The teacher spoke up suddenly, snapping her out of her trance and forcing her glare away from Hayden, Claire looked around the room, looking for a empty spot, and after a few seconds of awkward standing and a few helpful students pointing out a seat for her, Claire found a seat, and of course said seat was right beside Hayden. But she didn't complain, didn't even hesitate as she slid into the chair. She just crossed her arms, and glared directly ahead, not even sparing Hayden a glance. She bet she looked like a proper thug. Smelling like cigarettes and men's deodorant, and glaring like she just wanted to take on the entire world in a fight.

As Hayden scrambled for the blank sheets that managed to spill every which way she made sure to take her time picking these sheets up. Normally, she’d be a little more than annoyed but the accident served her well as a distraction now that she had an excuse to not stare back into those eyes that she knew were watching her intensly. Out of all of the other pairs of eyes in the classroom, like before Claire’s held that same purposeful stare but with an extra unnatural glare that gave rise to goosebumps. Doing her best to ignore the glare and finish her half-assed job of collecting the pointless papers, Hayden finally used the cue of the teacher’s commanding voice directed towards the blonde to return to her seat.

Shortly after, it didn’t come to much of a surprise when the other slid into the seat next to her without sparing a glance of any kind. As far as Hayden was concerned, or rather to her limited knowledge, the blonde had little to nothing to be upset or even angry about. If she had to guess, she would assume that she had some part in helping to aid Claire’s anger, maybe even the cigarettes that Claire might have obviously been smoking earlier as well. The first thought gave Hayden some self-satisfaction at the effect she might possibly be having on the other.

Failing to sneakily steal glances at the girl, who was now just glaring for the fun of it, it became obvious that Claire was planning on ignoring her. Which was something she could also happily oblige to. But if she were to be honest she couldn’t stand the silence between them even if nothing good came out of it. And she could be just as stubborn. Considering Hayden had tuned out the teacher long ago she had no doubts that the delinquent next to her had anything better to do. “I see you found the office.” Hayden began nonchalantly to Claire, without her eyes moving away from the man who had simply continued on with his introduction, stating the obvious as something more than a simply conversational phrase. “Claire, right?” She continued with a feigned curiosity and cocked brow as she turned to the other.

Thanks, pal. I might take you up on that offer if I'm feeling up to it.

Claire Tearis

Claire startled a bit when Hayden suddenly spoke to her. She hadn’t been expecting that, that was for sure. But now that it had happened, she was stuck. She didn’t know if she should just ignore Hayden, she give Hayden that same cold treatment that she had received from the girl earlier. She was pissed right now, and she didn’t feel like talking, so that seemed like a very solid option. Slowly Claire turned her angry gaze from the front of room, and looked at Hayden trying to read her. The girl’s eyes stayed forward, but Claire could tell it wasn’t Hayden trying to give her any shade, she was just trying not to draw attention to herself from the teacher. Claire snorted, that wasn’t one of her concerns. “Hm, yea.” She said, a bit awkwardly scratching at the back of her head. She didn’t know what it was that made her decide to talk to Hayden, but the girl’s next question made her wish that she had kept her mouth shut.

“Claire, right?”

Claire’s jaw clenched tightly as Hayden said that, and she now understood why the girl had acted in the way she had earlier. Being treated like a stranger hurt. It hurt a lot. Claire just wanted to grab the girl and shake her, and to just scream in her face, ”You know who I am, stop lying to me!” But Claire kept her composure, and instead she just nodded. “Yea, that’s me.” She said her voice sounding a bit strained as she looked away from Hayden, and towards the classroom window, she starred at the blue sky for a bit before turning back to Hayden, she gave the girl a blank near stoic stare, looking the girl up and down, memorizing the changes in the way the girl looked over the years, Claire’s scrutinizing gazed over the girls bandaged hands and Claire made a bit of a face at that. “What happened to your hands?”

It came as a surprise when the young woman actually responded. Hayden had expected her first statement to only upset the girl and probably earn some sort of growl. Similarly, it was meet with awkward irritation. Hayden could only imagine the other foolishly scratching the back of her head, it was one of the many quirks that Hayden had memorized of the girl she somehow saw as a stranger. Unfortunately, she didn't have any concern or need to confirm this as she avoided looking her direction. But when Claire answered her other question, it was met with some reluctance. Hayden knew she would have ignored the ignorant question if it was directed at her. Even so, after answering with a well kept composure, Claire didn’t seem too satisfied with her answer or the conversation in general. Serves her right.

However, it hardly felt as if a favor was being returned as Hayden played her strongly disliked role. In fact, none of this felt necessary and she was beginning to hate the fact that this was the reality of a long awaited reunion.

With nothing else to say, between tuning out the man at the front of the room every now and then, whilst ignoring the girl next to her with the wandering eyes, Hayden’s thoughts seized to a halt at the realization that the blonde’s eyes had made their way back to her. Making her own disgruntled face at Claire’s open observation of her bandaged hands, almost as if she had forgotten, Hayden turned her previous annoyance to her hands while observing them with a new fondness. ”It's nothing.” She answered colder than intended with the previous gaze at her handiwork melting into a cold stare. Turning her attention to the blonde with conflicting emotions, she finally settles for a nonchalant shrug. "I'm training for a fight."
