By the time the first rays of a new day were trying to poke through the window, Jett was ready to be up. He hadn’t slept much, despite all the work he had put into trying. The dog was so exasperated by his movement that she had taken the pillow and made a nest on the floor.

…And Jett had fought her for that pillow, because he wanted it, and somewhere around five in the morning they had come to a begrudging truce and were sharing it, on the bed. Jett listened as the greedy little dog snored—snored like nothing was wrong—as she lay on Raven's pillow, next to him.

But still, somehow, those little snores were enough to ease him into sleep for a while.

He woke up with the sun in his eyes, starving, empty inside. He groped for his phone to check the time, though it wasn't until he had gripped it and drawn it to his face that he remembered he'd slammed it into the wall and shattered it last night. He pressed a few buttons impatiently, pleased when the screen lit up. It didn't matter if it was distorted or hideous, it meant that it still worked, and that he hadn't accidentally ignored one of Raven's calls in the night.

…Though, it was difficult to be happy about then when he realized that meant she probably hadn't even called last ********, he couldn’t handle the uncertainty of it. He was getting something to eat and getting a new phone, forget everything else.

When Jett pulled himself from the bed, the dog watched for a second as though she intended to follow him…and then scooted forward and spread out on Raven's pillow like she owned the damn thing.

Jett didn't spend much time with her after that; he followed through with his usual morning ritual and didn't bother putting on more clothes. His pajama pants were all that he wore when he came out of the bedroom, and as he shuffled his way into the kitchen he tied up his hair.

He had the stove on before he knew what he was making, but he wasn't really thinking about what he wanted to eat; he just did what he needed to make something.

Toaster, pans, butter, eggs, bread…bacon? Sure, why not. Hell, he'd make everything. Pancakes, waffles, French Toast. He'd make enough for an army, even if it was just—

Jett paused.

…It wasn't just him, though, was it?

He hadn't even been paying attention, but he glanced up to glance at the spot where would-be Acubens was sleeping.

She was right where he'd left her…mostly.

Which was good, because he was going to make more than enough food for himself and a small dog. He could make enough to share with her. And Raven, if she decided she wanted to come back for breakfast.

Jett didn't move for a moment and then snorted, gritting his teeth before he began bustling around the kitchen.

He wasn't particularly quiet; if he had been in a good mood, he might have been more considerate and tried to let the girl in the living room sleep.

Now, he was either just too tired to care about that, or was being purposefully obnoxious to wake her up.
PostPosted: Sun Jan 18, 2015 8:25 pm

Acubens hadn't slept on cushions for a while, and evidently hadn't been getting any real rest because of that. Sure, she knocked out on the pavement eventually, but it wasn't until she laid her body down on the soft couch that she realized what she had been missing. Before she even knew it, Acubens snorted herself awake, half of her face sticky with her own drool. Wow. She really had been out. She laid there for a little, feeling the room around her through the sounds of life. Someone was moving through the rooms, hopefully Raven. Acubens should have gone in after her, especially if Jett was going to be gone for the evening. Even if she just sat on the edge of the bed in silence, it would be better than nothing.

But, since she was up and moving around, she must be alright. Acubens would apologize for not doing what she should have when she felt like moving, but right now the couch was eating her alive and Acubens was only too happy to let it continue it's feast. Her arms still felt too heavy and too far away to wake up anyway. Light filtered in through the window and played with the shadows behind her lids, like some whimsical puppet show about a king who lost his teeth, and then his people. Who would follow a ruler with no bite? The gargoyles of his castle came to life and fled their perches to leave the stone hall unguarded while the toothless king sat on his throne to command an army of hollow armor, collecting dust int he hallway. Even with his iron will, they would not come to life and carry out his bidding after his flesh army left for a king with a mouth full of pearls --

Acubens shot out of her skin when something in the kitchen crashed. She'd fallen back asleep again? Had she been dreaming? She was drooling some more... she'd clean it up later. Right now, Acubens pushed off the blanket that had been draped over her in the night and wandered over to the kitchen, raking her fingers through her wild curls.

"Mornin'" she muttered, leaning hard on the counter. There was only Jett in the kitchen at the moment. Raven must've gone somewhere else. "S'Raven," she asked, smacking her lips to get rid of the stale flavor. "I have to apologize for last night. I shouldn't have busted in on your two."

Jett's eyes lifted to meet her face , though his gaze didn't linger as he moved from one side of the kitchen to the other. He was silent for only a moment before replying, "Raven isn't here right now. She's gone."

His breath hitched, only just slightly; it was an almost unnoticeable response and he had to push himself to continue speaking. As if speaking more forcefully would bring her back, he clarified firmly, "To California, apparently. So if you were hoping she might join us for breakfast."

Another of the briefest pauses while he struggled to collect himself.

"…You will be sorely disappointed, I'm afraid."

Jett threw away the wrapper from a new stick of butter and had no choice but to face Acubens again. But he couldn't talk about Raven leaving, not so casually. He changed the subject hastily so he could still cling to the façade of normalcy. "I hope you're hungry, though. I'm making a lot to eat. I should have everything ready within ten minutes if you'd like to sit at one of those bar stools and keep me company while I finish up in here,
how's that?"

Acubens was suddenly very awake. Her eyes, newly green, lifted from the space between her face and the floor where she had been gazing lazily to the back of Jett's head. She considered him for a long moment, wondering whether to stay close to him or go where she was directed. The news came as a punch to her stomach, knocking the wind out of her like that time when she was three and a tire swing knocked her five feet back on the play ground. Had knocked Micah five feet back on the playground. Acubens would have to start making the distinction, she supposed...

But if Raven's departure turned Acubens' insides to jelly, she could only imagine what it was doing to Jett. He wasn't showing it, of course. Even when he had been Micah's boxing coach he kept everything inside.

He had more to lose from this than Acubens. Acubens loved Lesath, and was ready to love Raven. Hell, she'd kissed her twice. But Jett had forged a relationship with her. Trusted her. Given and received from her. Her knees were weak but she still had her legs. And she needed to lend them to Jett for a while. She hopped up on the counter next to Jett, shrinking the space between them.

"I'd love breakfast," she chirped, trying to lend Jett whatever normalcy she could. They'd talk about what they would do later, how they would cope with Raven's loss, where they moved from here. For now, Raven was just out of the apartment. Gone to the grocery store, maybe. But not gone forever. "I haven't really eaten since Leto saved me. I hadn't really eaten before that, either. This... guy... Monster really. ******** me up real good. Food sounds amazing now, though." She smiled brightly, or at least tried to. It felt more like a wince. Silence stretched between them for a long moment while Acubens kicked her legs, thinking of something to say next. She didn't want to just pretend like nothing was wrong. Everything was wrong. But she didn't want to claw at Jett's wounds.

She couldn't really keep thinking about herself like that, could she? As Acubens. Acubens was a dead barbarian leader. Her powered alias, used only to protect what was hers. She needed a name. A proper one. It came unbidden to her lips, given the events of the morning, confessing it to Jett at the same time she confirmed it to herself.

"Rhona, by the way. Rhona Lee. It means "jagged island" in Gaelic." She glanced at him sidelong, judging his reaction. "Sort of a far cry from Micah but... I like it..."

Jett blinked at the sudden change in closeness; had he been in a different mood, he might have chastised her for her choice in seating, but now he just bristled and moved away so he could resume cooking. He listened to he recount the details of her corruption, and while he was genuinely interested, his mind wasn't cooperating with him in the slightest. It was hard to give Acubens—Rhona—the attention she needed when the only woman on his mind was Raven.

"Micah, was it?" he asked, pursuing the small talk. It wasn't a particularly uncommon name, though he found himself racking his mind out of habit. "…I've known Micah's before. Did I know you, Rhona Lee?"

Her name was an interesting choice, and he was trying to be supportive by showing interest.

He just couldn’t meet her gaze. Or smile. Or give her his full attention.

Raven should have been here for this, for the getting to know the stranger-who-wasn't-really-a-stranger who she had invited to live in their house. He didn't know what he was supposed to do now that Raven wasn't there, but he couldn’t just kick Rhona out. That would have been cruel, and if Raven had wanted her there…

Jett was going to make sure she was there for when Raven came back.

Because…

A tremor ran down his spine.

Because she had to come back, right? She was just making a point, now. Right? Just trying to scare him.

…Right?

Jett wasn't interested in what Rhona had to say. Rhona knew that. She would have had to be a grade A imbecile not to know that. It was written in his demeanor. It sounded in the cadence of his voice. It hurt a little that Jett didn't remember her. She hadn't really expected him to remember her... she didn't take lessons from him for very long. Only enough to get her bearings as a fighter and then she sort of fell out of lessons. Were things different, had everyone been present, she would have made a game of making Jett guess who she had been before. Now, however, it was best to just give him the information that he wanted.

"I used to be your student. At the gym. You taught me how to box before I got shipped off to Scotland by my -- by Micah's parents." God, that felt strange. She shivered a little thinking about it. Officially, Micah was still missing. Her family had no idea what happened to her, did they? Not even her brother... tears stung her eyes, but she sniffed them away. Misha wasn't her family anymore, and she had to realize this. Her family was here now. In the Dark Mirror Court and in this kitchen. And Jett needed her in the here and now. Even if he wasn't listening, it was probably better than to leave him totally alone with his thoughts, right?

"Lesath -- Raven and I feel similarly, you know? We're both really passionate and we both feel things really keenly. Too keenly, actually. She ripped the head off of a stuffed raptor when I told her I wasn't ready to corrupt yet." Rhona laughed at the memory. "My point is that she loves you, Jett. She loved you enough to say good bye. And you can't run away from that kind of love, believe me, I tried. I tried to run from you, from Leto, and rom Lesath but... We always end up back where we belong. With the people that we love. She'll come back. You're here." She didn't know if this would help or make Jett explode. After all, she didn't know him SUPER well. But she had this odd feeling... this very strange draw to him. Similar to whatever drew her to Raven, yet with a different cadence to it's voice.

When he glanced at her, Rhona could swear that his eyes were violet.

Jett didn't give Rhona the opportunity to examine his eyes for much longer. His hand gripped the spatula tight enough that his knuckles looked like they were ready to rip through his skin. He wasn't breathing, but when he couldn’t process, he shut down. Rather than reacting in a healthy manner, her words were going in one ear and stirring up all sorts of unwanted thoughts and emotions.

He wasn't sure if he was mad at her for talking or not; he felt mad, but it could have been for any number of reasons. He didn't know how well she knew Raven or Lesath that she thought she could give him that advice. He wasn't even sure it was reassurance he wanted.

"I don't doubt that she loves me," he replied, and the words from Raven's note flashed through his head again. After all they had been through, how could she just erase all those feelings? "But she's a headstrong girl who does what she wants. If she wanted to leave, she was going to leave."

…And he was stupid for thinking he could have convinced her to stay.

It was difficult to keep his words even, and rather than risking lashing out at the girl, he returned to his position in front of the stove and flipped the pancake that he'd been working on. "What makes you think you know her well enough to tell me those things, though? How close were you two?" he asked, and though his voice almost actually sounded friendly there was a hidden bite beneath it. He was callous now, reasonably so, and he was not entirely in the mood to socialize. But he wanted to pretend like this was normal, and if pushing himself was the best way to get over it…

He had no problem pushing people to their breaking points before.

Why should he be any different?

Rhona was silent during Jett's silent lashings. She didn't flinch, though she expected to. Micah would have flinched. Micah would have run away and licked her wounds. She would have left Jett in the kitchen with his thoughts and his misery and nursed her own self loathing. Rhona was a different monster. Her temper perked it's ears -- she was only trying to help after all, but it rested it's muzzle on it's paws and snuffed itself back to sleep after a moment and Rhona was left perched on the counter in tranquility. But she knew when she wasn't wanted near, so she slipped from the counter and sat where she had been initially instructed to sit.

"She was my family when I didn't have anything. I had only just awakened as a White Moon senshi, and when I found her I was lost and alone. She -- " Rhona huffed a laugh, leaning her cheek on the palm of her hand. "She used to call me Dino Baby, and insisted that I call her Moth Momma. I only knew her as Raven Twice, though. We ran into one another at the mall when I was still Micah, and again when I was powered into Acubens. The later time I was broken, bleeding, and had just come from being tossed off a church. Raven stayed with me until I could breath without wanted to kill myself." She left out the part where Raven kissed her. Better save that for another time.

"We're sisters." She chose her words carefully now, watching the back of Jett's head, measuring his reaction in the twitches of his shoulders and arms. She didn't really know how to interpret those signs too well, but generally when someone's shoulders were up by their eyes, it was time to back away, and so that was the sort of thing she looked for. His white knickles were of particular interest, and she watched them for signs of change. "That's the best word for it," she continued carefully. "She showed me the way to the Dark Mirror Court, and along that path I met you and Leto. I have her to thank for setting me on the path home, even if it did take me a while to get here." There was more, she could swear there was more. Had Lesath given her a charm? A bracelet or... something... in a tree house... Rhona pulled her mind apart, but the pieces weren't falling into place like they should have.

As she spoke, Jett's mood fluctuated only slightly in either direction; he knew he wasn't in a state where it was healthy to have someone around, but he wasn't going to lash out at Rhona if he could help it. This wasn't her fault.

Mostly.

Sure, maybe if she hadn't jumped out when she did, Raven and him could have worked something out, or gotten to talk about alternatives…or at least talk about what they had seen in their future together. Maybe he could have explained why he needed to stop this evil from growing so that her, his mother, Chloe…so that all of them stood a chance at having a happily ever after.

Raven would have understood.

She had to.

He wasn't doing any of this selfishly—all of this was for her, and for their daughter, and his mother. It wasn't like he was staying because he liked all of this.

But if he gave up? If he abandoned this…and then the Negaverse just grew and swallowed them up? What type of earth was going to be left for Chloe if they didn't stop the Negaverse?

…But that wasn't a conversation he needed to be having with Rhona, or himself. And he was just going to keep getting worked up about it if he kept focusing on it.

"…That sounds like Raven," he finally said. "I'm happy she was there for you. I'm sorry she's not here now. She and I…"

…Had been having problems for a while. Maybe Rhona hadn't even contributed so much to her leaving. Maybe Raven was always meant to leave tonight. Maybe things would have gone differently, but…maybe not.

"It's not important. What is important, though." He began to compile a mix of the freshly cooked breakfast and in a matter of seconds he had a plate ready to be served. He turned and passed it to Rhona before pulling out some cutlery and handing that to her as well. "…Is that you keep up your strength. You'll need it if you're joining us. And if you're getting ready to start your new life."

…Raven was much more sympathetic. If she were here, she'd be able to take Rhona out shopping, give her the emotional support she needed. Jett was callous, now, and not in a position where he thought he would be of any use to anyone. "…I have some things to do today. Work, and all," he tried to explain, though he wasn't even sure if he was going to make it in today. He might just go out and take some time to himself.

"But I'll be back by dinner. You don't have to stay in the house if you don't want, I can give you some money and you can go buy what you need. I know it's not easy starting over, but I'll do what I can."

Handing over a credit card was easy, after all. And then he could just go back to bed and she could do all of her own work.
PostPosted: Sun Jan 18, 2015 10:17 pm

If it would have been any consolation to Jett, Rhona didn't think his actions had been callous. She had thought them rash, and a little bit rude, but not entirely mean or even cold. He was in mourning, and Rhona, of all people, could understand something like that. She had spent the whole last year a raw and dangerous beast, she could hardly fault someone else for doing the same thing. And when Jett came home she would welcome him as any friend would. She woudl reheat the soup she had made last night (she recalled in embarassment in that moment that she had fallen asleep before packing it up, and noticed that Jett had when she was asleep) and remind him that she wasn't the only one who needed to keep themselves healthy.

And if the time came when Jett finally let his anger wash into true sorrow, Rhona would be there for that too. She would catch him when his legs failed him, because that's what family did. And he was her's now. He was her brother.

Her brother.

Whatever mourning ached in her chest for Misha whom Rhona had lost, it was swept away by that thought. She smiled brighter than she should have and accepted the food that he had made for her.

"She will be back. But for now, you're here. And that's great. Better than anything the White Moon ever did for me." Excluding wonderful lovely perfect Lenka... maybe Acubens would make her old master her new project. God she must be... 14 now? Was she even eligible for saving or was she too young? Rhona hadn't failed to notice that there were not children within teh ranks of the Chaos, but the Dark Mirror Court had always been a fuzzy grey area to her...

"Remember that we're family too, now, you and me. I'll make sure I'm here when you get back." Better for Jett to come home to an lit and living home, rather than a shell. She didn't however, reach for his credit card. Rhona, after all, did have a little money. Taxes, she called them. Cash and cards used as payment for the rest she gave others with her new powers. She could start there, and raise more money that same way.

"Are you leaving now, or will you eat with me?"

Jett could remember that they were family, now. For whatever it was worth. Rhona had lost all of hers, and if she needed a surrogate, he would do his best. After he had some time to deal with his own emotions.

After he got to talk to Raven again, and figure out just what the hell was really going on.

"I'll stay," he replied; it hadn't taken much thought. He might not have been hungry, but letting his body starve wasn't going to do any good. He needed to be at the top of his game—for Rhona. For himself.

For Raven.

He needed to speak with her now, more than ever; he couldn't even focus on poor Rhona. She had just given up everything and she needed better support, but all he could think about was himself. Or, rather, Raven.

Either way, Rhona was trying to help him, and he was too stubborn to let her support him, even if just emotionally.

He would take care of this on his own.

For everyone.

He turned off the stove and fixed himself a plate before he sat down next to the girl. They could deal with the heavy stuff later.

For now, it was just breakfast.

With family.
