Kylinari sighed softly and rolled from her bed. Hooves gently tapped on the floor as she let her legs hang off the edge and paused. She had half a mind to go out of her little hovel. It had been 2 days since the halloween mansion fiasco, but she didn't want to partake in another devastating event. Perhaps there was a personal craft she could do instead? She had a few articles of clothing that could use some mending. Or she could even read another book or three?

Her green eyes shifted around a moment before her gaze fell upon her mantle. On it was the photo of the child she had escaped the mansion with. The poor thing. Standing and crossing the room, her fingers lifted to caress the small cheek in the photo. "I wish I could have done more to help you..." she half whispered, as if the child was alive and there with her. She cracked a faint smile. "We'd have all sorts of parties. All of which you'd be allowed to attend...." her voice trailed. As did her eyes, falling to the key resting beside the photo.

The key...

She had found it in the frame shortly after escaping the mansion. Was this what the child was wanting her to take instead of just the photo? Her fingers shifted, faintly caressing the small metal frame before a sound at her door made her jump.

She froze in place, eyes wide in the direction of the door and holding her breath a moment before forcing herself to exhale and calm herself. She had to remind herself that she was safe at home. Laisidhiel had always been the pillar of protection. There was no reason why any strange noises outside her doorway would signify any sort of danger.

Taking a deep breath, she crossed the floor to the door and opened it.

She cracked open the door, peering out of it with a single eye but found no one out in view. Cautiously, she opened the door further and looked around.

Still, there was no one there. Odd... She could have sworn she heard--....

She blinked. Her hoof had bumped into something and she looked down, now noticing the small chest at her doorstep. She stood there in silence another moment or two before looking around more to hopefully catch a fleeting glimpse of whoever might have left this here.

When nothing and no one was spotted, she knelt down, picking up the chest and turning indoors. She paused only briefly to make one last glimpse down the walkways of the tree before closing her door behind her again. She held the chest a moment, tilting it gently to look over it a little more closely. It didn't open. It appeared locked. Slightly defeated, she set it down on her bed and tapped her chin.

"Too bad I'm not a tree shaper..." she started to herself. "Then I could shape a key--..." her eyes flew open wide.

"A key! That's it! But..." she grew skeptical as she crossed the room again, retrieving the key off her mantle and looking it over. This was too coincidental... This key wouldn't work.... would it?

She turned back to her bed, and brought the key with her. It was a long shot, but if anything she could at least say she tried. Taking a deep breath, she inserted the key....

The key slipped in without a hitch. It at least fit into the keyhole well enough.

She froze again, though. If the key did work, would she want to know what was inside? She held still like this for a few moments that seemed to last forever. She eventually turned her gaze to the photo. If the key did work, maybe this is what the child had wanted her to save? It seemed to be hiding this key from something scary. It only made sense.... right?

Taking another deep breath, she turned the key. She blinked only slightly in surprise as the key fully turned, a click sounding from the chest. The lid cracked open as the locking mechanism released it's hold.

She blinked at the chest, at the photo, then the chest again. She half-gulped, lifting the lid the rest of the way open.

"CHRREEEEEE!!!!"

"AAAHHHH!!!!"

Kylinari flailed as a small green creature flung itself out of the box towards her face. She tumbled backwards with a squeal and rolled, quickly gaining her footing and standing with such swiftness and fear that would possibly put a mouse to shame! With her body now pressed firmly into the corner of her room, she panted heavily, eyes wide and poised upon the small green... thing that had scared her so.

The small Candy-thief blinked, half perched on the edge of the chest. The two front paws of it dangling cutely off the front as it's head tilted at the curious action of the big furred thing that had freed her from her box. Was it scared? Why was it scared?! It should be happy! It set her free! Now they can play together!

The creatured churred and tilted her head again in the other direction a moment, watching the large furred thing calm down from its sudden panic. That's right! She was a friend! Not anything scary! She gave her tail a small joyous twitch before ducking back down into the box. Maybe a peace offering?

Kylin remained fixed in her corner, only calming slightly as the cute little creature seemed to appear confused by her sudden panic. Of course, she wasn't expecting anything to come popping out of a locked chest to begin with. Catching her breath, Kylin started to relax.

She noticed that the creature had ducked down into the box. The other contents of the chest began shifting as the creature seemed to be making valiant efforts to heave a small plush doll up and out of the box.

Calm enough now to consider approaching, Kylin slowly stepped forward, blinking at the doll that now half hung out of the box.

"Chrrreee?" the Candy-theif popped back up after managing to push the plush doll half out of the box. Seeing the large furry thing calming down and getting closer, the small critter churred and leaped up to sit on the doll's head. It stuck up her chin proudly and swished her tail happily. As if to say, 'See what I brought for you!?'

Momentarily marveling at the absolutely cuteness the little creature displayed, Kylinari permitted a soft giggle to escape her. She stepped forward more confidently this time and reached her hand forward. She let the little creature climb onto her fingers and giggled more as it began scampering up her wrist, arm and finally perch on her shoulder.

"Well, aren't you adorable..." she half cooed to it before she looked back at the doll. Picking it up carefully, she looked over the doll a little more closely. She then turned, holding the doll up to the picture. There was something familiar about the doll..... but she couldn't quite place it. The doll looked nothing like the child, but for some reason Kylin couldn't help but compare the two.

She frowned softly and clutched the doll close before smiling a bit and returning the doll to her bed. She let it down carefully upon her pillow and pat it upon the head. Another churr from the Candy-thief on her shoulder made her attention return to the chest still open. There was still a few small items within and she lifted one out.

It was a necklace. Intriguing and simple at all once. She ran her fingers over it briefly before moving to latch it around her neck. Once that was done, she retrieved the last item from the chest. A scroll. She unrolled it, expecting to see a note explaining the box and it's contents... But instead, it was something completely different. She'd have to study this a little more later on.

The Candy-theif had taken a liking to batting at her new jewelry piece. This elicited a chuckle from Kylinari as she plucked the creature off her shoulder and set her back down on the bed. "I've never seen one of your kind before." she half cooed to it as she sat down at the edge of the bed.

"Chrrreeee!!!" it responded, seeming happy to have a new friend! And, of course, to be out of that box!
