IC

It was midday before Samoset was handed a note from Eshe. The messanger was a young prentice Sister, who said nothing as she handed him the note and then turned on her heels and ran back toward the shore's direction. Eshe needed him to go to Tale to retrieve something for her. With the cold that was coming through Tendaji, it was bringing sickness with it, and she needed someone to go to Tale and bring back some of the bulbs filled with the sweet Tale water back to Chibale for her.

Though Tale was having their own form of problems. The land wasn't prepared for the cold and the bulbs were withering away and disappearing. It was Tale's water source, and with it scarce the people had to ration carefully.

Quest Tasks

||. This quest is meant to elaborate on Samoset's feelings of earthlings overusing the forests.
||. Samoset must go to Tale and find the bulbs that Eshe needs to cure her people.
||. The bulbs have all been trimmed from their base and brought back to villages to use for water, as Samoset will figure out after visiting a multitude of villages.
||. Samoset will happen upon two children who are trimming out the last of the bulbs in their area, and when confronted will run away from Samoset and back to their parents, taking the bulbs with them.
||. Samoset must try to get the leaf earthlings to give him the bulbs that they need for water, to use for the Alkidike.
||. Samoset will not know that the bulbs have been withering and in short supply until he speaks to the parents. Until then he is free to think that the earthlings are being greedy, or careless, or hoarding them, or whatever he may think.
||. The quest should end with him obtaining a few small bulbs and then returning to Eshe.

The Chill

Samoset paused in his step as the letter was handed to him. A younger Sister, not much smaller than he was, had given him this note and paid him little mind, something he was used to. He rested his hand against a tree and clutched the edge of his poncho to his chest, his eyes drifting across the unfamiliar handwriting of his elder, Eshe. The cold was sweeping it's way through Jauhar and Sisters were getting ill, and the only remedy were bulbs from Tale? He found it odd that such a necessity would be placed so far from home, but closed the note with a nod of acceptance. Alright, he'd go harvest the bulbs, it sounded easy enough.

He padded his way along the path and into his house to prepare for the journey. He'd need a water skin, an apple or two, and maybe an extra layer of clothing, but he really didn't see the need for much else. He entered his room and laid his things out, before the sound of coughing rang through the house. Who was that? The hybrid tilted his head and followed the noise out into the sitting room, where his grandmother sat with a cloth over her mouth. His face faltered as he stood, partially hidden against the wall, and watched her cough again and again, before resolving to turn back around and finishing getting his things together. Whatever was getting everyone so sick was hitting home and he needed to get this job done quickly before things got any worse.

"Bulbs bulbs bulbs..." He muttered, draping a blanket over his shoulders. A steady mantra for the road, he thought, one to keep him on his task. According to the letter, the bulbs could be found in Tale, which wasn't too foreign a place to him. His father had shown him all the routes he could take when they visited and reminded him of places he could find refuge in if he needed, so it wasn't like he'd encounter any serious trouble, right? Find the bulbs, collect the bulbs, send them back to Eshe. It would be easy as pie.

The route to Tale he'd chosen was his father's favorite, one that passed by quite a few fruit trees and flowering shrubs, but to his despair, much of what was usually there had been picked or crippled by the weather. Succulent fruits of all colors lay dim and rotten against the dirt, a sight that sent fury up his spine. How could people leave food laying about like this? It was absolutely disgusting! He kicked at a stone on the path as he ushered himself ahead, hoping that it would distract himself enough to get to his destination. He wasn't out here to get angry, he was here to fetch bulbs for his sick Sisters, and there was no more room for pausing. Thoughts of his grandmother's coughing echoed through and shoved him forward to the boarder of Tale and Jauhar, where his mouth dropped wide open.

"W-what...?" He gasped, hustling out into the sand. "There were a huge amount of them here last time! Where did they go?"

Black eyes scanned the area around his feet and about the trees, before widening in a panic. There were no bulbs around here! Absolutely none! Just a bunch of empty spaces where they normally would be! His heart started to race as he continued his search from path to path. There weren't any bulbs near the main path, nor the caves, or by the trees... What in the name of Aisha was going on?

He found himself against a tree a mile north of Yera after a while, his hands balled into fists. It had to be the Earthlings, they'd taken them all for themselves! He clenched his teeth and growled. Stupid, greedy, inconsiderate, EARTHLINGS! He hated that he shared half of his blood with them! It made him feel tainted, even dirty, to be considered one of them. Even if he loved his family in Yera, there was no excuse for taking everything that they saw and keeping it as if it all belonged to them! He stamped his foot against the earth, before bending to pick up and rock and chucking it as far as he could into the horizon. How was he supposed to finish his mission now? Eshe would be thoroughly disappointed in him if he came back empty handed. Maybe he could steal some bulbs? NO. Wait, that would be stooping just as low as the Earthlings. He resigned against the tree and dug into his satchel for his half-eaten apple, before turning to continue along the path. All he could do was concentrate and hope he found some on his own. There was no use getting angry... Not right now at least.

He figured he'd start with Yera, his father's hometown, and work downwards from there in hopes of finding bulbs. But, the closer he got to the village, the less likely it seemed he'd find any there. The sands in front of the village were as barren as the sands by Jauhar, a disheartening fact for him to face. He debated entering the village to ask his grandfather for help but decided against it at the last second. He had to do this alone.

The next village was miles to the south, one called Vers, which would be his next stop on the journey. Miles upon miles of barren land gave breath to little hope as the village appeared, a sigh pulling from his lips. Once again he paused, debating asking for help, before heading further south to Yware. Once outside of Yware he noticed a cart being tugged along the outside of the village and he scurried into the trees to get a better view. Buckets of water with empty bulbs strewn around them, was that where the bulbs were going? Was the water supply low around here? His lips curved into a pout. Hm... Nonsense. They lived in the desert. Surely these Earthlings were smart enough to know to conserve water. They couldn't be that stupid, could they? He hopped down from the tree, gave the village a once over, and turned for the furthest village in Tale, Isd. Hopefully there would be some bulbs along that route for him to take.

Getting Nowhere

Hours of walking meshed together like mashed potatoes and gravy, which were foods that he really wished he could be eating right now instead of trudging through this stupid desert sand. The hybrid's moral was dwindling consistently with each passing hour. He'd find a reason to keep going for ten minutes, grumble about it for twenty, and spend the rest of the remaining thirty praying to Aisha for something other than sand to appear in front of him. Nothingness, nothingness, everywhere he looked! No wonder his father retreated to Jauhar, this place was the most boring, barren strip of land he'd ever had the misfortune of being tossed into. Why couldn't he have just swallowed his pride and asked his grandfather for help back in Yera? He would've brought him an entire basket of bulbs if he'd asked him politely, but no, no, he had to be an idiot and decide to do this all by himself. When would he ever learn to give in and let someone else handle something for him?

He kicked at the dirt and dug at his satchel again, before giving himself a quick slap in the face. Hello, Tendaji to Samoset? You ate your last apple two hours ago! Now you've got nothing left to eat for the rest of the journey. How many times did he need to remind himself of that? He stomped ever forward, muttering obscenities to himself, before something caught his eye. Two little heads, equally tiny bodies... Children? He lowered himself to the ground as if he were stalking prey and squinted his eyes. Certainly children, dirty ones at that, both digging their hands into the dirt. What were they up to? He shuffled forward and kept his distance at first, before noticing one hand a bulb to the other from the hole they had been digging. A bulb! They were digging up bulbs! His legs sprinted forward before his brain could catch up with him.

"Hey, you two!" He shouted, practically tripping over the sands. "Could you show me where some more of those bulbs are?"

He fumbled forward and staggered to get back up, only to gasp as the pair of children started sprinting away. He raised his hand and flailed towards them, before chasing after them. He ran for what seemed like forever until he came upon a small section of houses. He paused, his eyes squinting again, until he saw one of the children peer out from the corner.

"Hey! Wait! All I want to do is talk to you!" He cried, racing around the bend.

But, as he turned the corner, he failed to notice another male standing next to the child with a shield in his hand. All it took was one smack to the side and Samoset was down for the count.

Compromises

Waking up in an unfamiliar house was bad enough, but to wake up next to a woman he'd never met was even worse. The hybrid shot up from the bed and gasped, his hands tearing the blankets off of his skin and raising up in defense against the strangers in the room. What happened? Why was he here? Who were these strange people? Where were his arrows? He continued to flail and eventually huddled towards the backboard of the bed in defense. Something about those kids on the other side of the room was familiar... Bulbs. Something about bulbs? He leaned forward a little as it all came back to him. Oh, right, Eshe, bulbs, sickness, A SHIELD SMACKING HIM ACROSS THE SIDE!

"Why, in the name of Aisha, did you smash me across the side with your shield!? He shouted, letting out a long, shrill whine. "I was only trying to ask those kids where they found the bulbs, I was sent here to get some! No need to react so... So... Violently!"

He clutched the side of his head and huffed. Seriously, these stupid Earthlings. Maybe he'd startled the kids? If so, then what about him had frightened them? He wasn't going to hurt them. Suddenly, a hand was at his shoulder, jarring him from his thoughts. The man from before now sat beside him with a tired, but sympathetic expression, and held a small bit of fruit out to Samoset. Blinking, Sam took the fruit, and proceeded to suck at it, all while waiting for someone, anyone, in the room, to respond to his question. But, the room remained silent for a while as the woman rose from her space next to the bed and handed Samoset his things, the dirt upon her face catching his attention. Why were they all so dirty? Had they been digging out there all day or something? He bit his lip, partly from nervousness, and raised his head to speak again.

"Please, listen, I really need some of those bulbs." He said, his fingers trailing along the edge of his satchel. "If you could just show me where I could find some more, I won't bother you ever aga-"

"There aren't any more." The man interjected, his expression growing dismal. "Our kids found the last two in the area, it seems. The rest have withered away and died."

Samoset paused, his eyes growing wide. Withered away and died? His gaze turned to the children from before. One looked a bit uneasy about being looked at while the smaller one, a girl, offered him a sheepish smile, which he did his best to echo before looking to the man again.

"So, the desert's going through a freeze?" He asked, his mouth curling sourly as the man nodded. Oh, so this was why there wasn't anything to be found out in the desert, everything that had been viable had been taken. He gazed to his feet, his thoughts turning back to his previous thoughts of how greedy the Earthlings had been, and then back to the thoughts of his sick Sisters back at home. He had to get some bulbs to bring home somehow... But how? He looked to the family again, his lips pursing, and sighed.

"I really hate to ask you this, but I really really need some bulbs to bring home." He began, his gaze falling to no one in particular. "My elder sent me a letter, specifically, to get some because my Sisters are all falling ill from the cold. My grandmother is already coming down with whatever it is and her health is already rocky as it stands. Is there anything I could trade to you for a small amount of bulbs?"

He popped his satchel open and emptied it's contents onto the bed. He'd eaten all his food, but he still had half of his water skin filled, as well as the blanket he'd brought from home. However, as he went through the pockets of the satchel, he uncovered a bracelet he'd been given by his grandmother, along with a set of earrings that matched. They were made with some semi-precious materials and would fetch a good price in the market, he was sure of it. He placed the blanket, his water skin, and the jewelry together in a pile before deciding to leave his satchel upon the pile as well and gave the family a pleading look.

"Please, I'm offering you everything I have, except for my bow and arrows. I'm desperate." He begged. "I only need three, maybe four, bulbs. They can be as small as you like, just, please. I won't ever bother you again, I swear."

The room was quiet again until one of the children, the girl, seemed to take a liking to the blanket and wrapped herself, and her sibling, up in it. Seeing this, the mother looked to the father and slowly nodded to each other. It would be a fair trade. Samoset breathed a long, relieved sigh as the mother took the earrings and bracelet, while the father fiddled with the water skin and satchel, and offered him a smile. It wasn't too long afterward that he was handed a small bag filled with four equally tiny bulbs and given another few bits of fruit for the road, something he hadn't been expecting. He thanked them profusely and gave the children a pat or two on the head before turning to make his way home.

----

Hours later, nearly a day after he'd started the journey, Samoset was back home in Jauhar with the bulbs he'd been asked for. He was allowed to cross over to the Chibale Isles and meet with Eshe and Aisha to hand them over. He was tired, thirsty, and looking a bit ragged, but smiling. He'd done what he was sent out to do, more or less, and now a remedy for the sickness his Sisters had could be made. It was something he could be proud of.

"Mother..." He sighed, once he'd rested. "Do you think I was wrong about the Earthlings? ...I mean, some can be generous and some can be greedy, right?"

The silence beneath Aisha's branches lulled him, causing him to yawn. He supposed a lack of reaction was as good as anything else and stood, before smiling up to Aisha again. Suppose he was wrong, suppose he was right. It didn't matter. He was who he was because of this beautiful being right in front of him. If that wasn't enough justification in of itself, then he didn't know what else could be.
