Young Laesara played by the bank of the brook near where she lived with her mother and Mal. Mal was not her father. Even at her young age, still young enough for the advent of spring to be new and spectacular and the art of speech to still slightly evade her, she had figured out that she had not – as she might have previously thought – sprung forth from her mother like a bud from a tree. She had had a father, and she had asked, in the awkwardness of a toddler who's ability to understand language did not match her still-developing ability to make language, if Mal was her father. She had been told no, very emphatically, and she had no reason to doubt her mother's word.

But if I have a father, and it is not Mal, then who is it

Mama had told her that she would explain when Laesara was older, and Laesara, again, did not doubt that she would. But 'older' seemed so far away, and the girl longed to know, just for the sake of knowing.

For now, though, she had to wait and, though it was frustrating to have answers so far from her tiny grasp, Laesara was content to play on the burbling rocks and seek out berries and herbs that mama might want.

”Blackberry, blackberry, where do you hide?” she sang softly to herself, peering into the bushes, ”By the redberries, on the side?” Nope! The redberry bush was barren of berries, and the blackberry bush next to it was, as well.

I shouldn't have eaten them all... she thought to herself, That was very bad of me. But guilt and shame wouldn't bring them back. She skipped into a small grove of trees overhanging the river. ”Are you here? Are you there?” she called out, poking her head in.

There they are! to her delight, there was a cluster of blackberry bushes, yet undiscovered by her tummy. She began to pick them and put them into her basket, shamelessly eating a few.

“Here, here!” chimed a voice behind her and she spun around, her mouth stained, a guilty look on her face. But what met her gaze was not her mother or Mal, but a shining-scaled creature. It had four legs and long hands, with a powerful tail. It dripped, the sunlight making the water that came off of it's silver scales look like crystals. Her mouth dropped open in awe, and she held out a juice-stained hand to it.

”What are you?” she asked, as it watched her...

    (Taming - Success)

“Thats an Alvhui.” said a quiet voice from nearby. Laesara looked up to see the ugliest creature she had ever seen. It walked on two legs like her mother, but it's feet – she could see – were clawed like a bird's. It was built thick and powerful like Mal, but hunched, as if it was carrying a heavy pack, though it bore no pack. It wore a dark, well-worn cloak that covered all but a snout that looked reptilian and a tail with a sharp end. It was misshapen and ugly and strange. “It is a creature of the water and the light, able to create illusions.”

The silvery creature, the Alvhui, chittered in annoyance. “Gesi'ris mojja, kluii di Oblivion, wux re nurhhu, vuryei tir ji belhal!” it said, and Laesara looked at it in astonishment.

“It talks!” she said, halfway between wariness and delight... towards both strange creatures.

“It does.” said the ugly thing, “It told me to go away in the old Orderite tongue, but it need not worry about me...” the thing raised a hand – clawed, like it's feet, and ornamented with rings. Laesara had never seen rings before and watched their sparkle. There were too many things to be fascinated with at her age, and she had never before had so many spectacular things come into her reality at once. One more was added as water flowed up, circling its hand in shimmering liquid. “I share an element with it.”

“Magic?!” Laesara exclaimed. She reached out to the water, but it was too high up.

“Yes.” said the thing, and to the child's disappointment it let the water fall. “Why don't you offer the Alvhui some of your berries?”

If I give it my berries, Mama will be upset... Laesara thought, looking at the basket she had managed to collect, But I don't want it to go away. Stunned to silence by all the sparkly things – and not so sparkly things – happening around her, she scooped out a heaping handful and handed it to the silver fish-like creature.

The Alvhui walked over and accepted it with grave seriousness, giving her a bow of gratitute and the ugly thing a stiff nod. “Ihk'ja.” it said. Turning back to the young Orderite with an almost indulgent smile... “Hi, you small one.”

Alvhui: Go away, spawn of Oblivion, you are ugly and do not belong!
    Alvhui: For now.

    (Training - Failure)

    “Hi...” Laesara said, shyly, waving.

The shining thing laughed. “You cute, small one. Very cute.” It looked at her with its strange eyes, scrutinizing her from head to foot – not much, for she was still very small yet. “You get tall some day, Gelessi sees. Yes, Gelessi does see. Gelessi sees much. Cute small one.” it babbled.

It talks worse than me! Laesara thought, surprised. Talking was hard sometimes. The words caught on themselves when they tried to get through to her mouth, and her tongue stumbled. She didn't know all the words either, so she struggled to say things sometimes. “How tall?” she asked, smiling happily. She was talking to a fish. A pretty fish with legs, to be sure, but its tail was distinctly fishy.

“Tall.” said the thing, mischeviously, “Very tall.” it looked at her for a moment more and then brightened. “You show Gelessi wings, yes? Gelessi wants to see your little wingses.” it nodded.

It wanted to see her wings? Laesara looked up at the ugly thing before remembering that it was an ugly thing, one that talked sure, but...

But he isn't a grown up. He's not Mal or mama. I have to say yes or no on my own.

Shyly, she summoned her wings. The white, fluffy, pink-tipped things fluttered out from her top.

The Alvhui squeaked. “Yes, yes, pretty soft wings!” it reached out as if to touch them, and then pulled back. “Gelessi thanks you for showing.” it said, bowing. “I see you soon, okay?” and with that, it leapt into the water... and was gone.

“It went away!” Laesara exclaimed, “It went away!” she said again, turning to the ugly thing.

“It appeared to vanish, yes.” it said, amused, “But Alvhui are masters of illusion. It is likely still there, waiting for us to leave before laughing at our folly.” It turned to her and Laesara thought the ugly beast smiled, if it's sharp-toothed craggy expression could be called a smile. “Now. Little one... Will you take me to your mother?”
