Hobbies: Leatherworking - Leatherworking was a mark of hunters from whence he hailed. Scraps of hide harvested from the kill were stretched and tanned, then fashioned into bracelets or necklaces that the hunters often wore to mark their kills. This tradition lives on with Shale, who has since fashioned leather bracelets with carved bone accents as well as a necklace laden with a tooth for each successful kill. Now, however, he tools leather to make some money on the side. It’s a marketable skill, and practical in how leather’s sturdiness could be used for a variety of tasks, be it fashioning a strap to tie something (or someone) down, patching up old clothes, or working out new handles for tools.
He can tan, cure, and work into leather anything one offers him. It’s rumored that he has a leather bracelet with a rose tattoo on it.
Hunting - The thrill of engaging in the hunt often outweighs the acquisition of prey. For Shale, hunting is a state of mind - it is the assertion of one organism over another in a play for complete domination of life. With every kill made, it shapes the future of each species involved - and over time, this opposition sharpens prey and predator alike into their own evolutions. On a more basic level, Shale enjoys bow hunting and spear fishing mostly for sport. He does not know how to cook, and thus begrudgingly relies on others to prepare the game that he takes home. Shale primarily hunted with his brother, and is unused to other companionship involved, but remains somewhat open toward teaching others. Even now, hunting still remains a frequented and cherished activity, with Shale hunting at least once a weekend.
Reading - Shale never fancied reading for pleasure. Initially his interest in reading began with how-to books, as he tried to teach himself useful skills, but that fascination soon branched into more philosophical approaches on life. He never developed a taste for literature, or fictional accounts, as he found the stories impractical and difficult to apply toward life (Shale also lacks imagination when reading, which is something he will never cop to). He will peruse libraries in search of a good book or recommendation, and has on more than one occasion spent the day in a bookstore sifting through the sections that he liked. While normally a solitary hobby, he actually enjoys reading aloud, though primarily to animals. Currently his library is slowly starting to grow, as this was a recently discovered joy for him.
There are also rumors that he owns a couple cookbooks.
Exploring - As someone who never lived in the city before, Shale has a lot to learn - and a lot to explore. Be it inside or out, Shale has the propensity to wander and attempt to discover his surroundings. He will visit stores he does not recognize, venture through streets he never noticed before, and check out events he’s never attended. He will also collect small ‘mementos’ of these places (and especially from people, he loves nabbing items that he doesn’t think will be missed and may have a bit of a kleptomaniac tendency). Experiences in these places may also be journaled about and subject to revisit, as he slowly starts to acclimate himself to this new life in the city. So far he enjoys these daily outings, but all the stimuli present in a city builds quickly into oversaturation.
Virtues: Calm -- Few times in his life has Shale ever been ruled by his emotions. Always possessed of a calm and collected demeanor, Shale was seen as a quiet, contemplative child growing up and that projection never wavered. As an adult, Shale hardly raises his voice beyond conversational, and maintains a steel grip on his temper. Seldom is he ever raised to ire, and he prides himself on this fact. This quality allows Shale to provide steady support for those who would get to know him, especially in turbulent times. His additional quietude renders him a good listener for those in dire stress as well. His phlegmatic demeanor also helps to diffuse highly charged situations, as he rarely contributes to escalation in a fight.
Intelligent -- Possessed of a gift for voracious learning, Shale is quick to pick up new tidbits of information and has a natural tendency to learn quickly. His learning style excels best with visual/kinesthetic gearing, though he can function well in visual/nonverbal. Shale’s preferences lie in learning skills that involve working with his hands, history, and philosophy. He enjoys trivia facts and will often employ them when prompted to do so (thus he is a joy to have at cocktail parties, if one can get him to talk). He could feasibly make a good tutor, or partner on a trivia game show.
Independent -- Shale was raised in a society that expected independence and leadership out of him as a young age, and thus never grew to accept dependency on others. To him, it’s more comforting to navigate a city based on his own capabilities, or learn a task through self-guidance rather than depend on someone else to assist. This renders Shale quite good at guidance for others, and refreshingly not burdensome. He is not the type of person to cling incessantly due to a perceived inability to do something for himself. He also prefers to form his own decisions and beliefs, and thus is a good go-to judge for arguments or seeking advice about charged interpersonal struggles.
Flaws:Austere -- Shale’s world view is incredibly stark, and devoid of mirth and laughter. He does not tolerate jokes well, seldom smiles, and finds flippant personalities somewhat grating on his nerves. Given his inability to understand jokes, some people mistakenly consider him dense (though he does not bother to correct this notion). With such a severe demeanor, he is not often approached by others, either. Ultimately he has proven quite adept at repelling others from interacting with him on any kind of a lighthearted basis and prefers to keep it this way - the less mirth and merriment, the better he can concentrate on the work at hand (which, again, looks like just being a b*****d).
Transgressive -- Given past events, Shale learned that going against the grain often yielded more rewards than going with the flow. He seeks out contrary action, even to a lawbreaking extent, due to his beliefs. He may steal solely because it is frowned upon by current society, and thus he mistakenly believes that committing the act will bring him good fortune or improve the standing he will have in life. This often sabotages what few relationships he can manage, as he will openly betray friends and decimate their trust for this skewed understanding that doing so might benefit all parties in the long run. He will violate trust, or promises, or requests and sees no inherent downside in this behavior - even if it’s literally ruined his life to this point.
Emotionally Flatlined -- Shale hardly ever speaks. He’s standoffish, difficult to connect with, and nearly impossible to relate to. He’s so often in his own head that he’s almost unreachable. Shale appears to exist in his own world and is perfectly content with living there indefinitely; so far as he’s seen, no one in the world around him can quite form solid, interesting relationships with him. There is no need to tax himself in looking for someone that could fulfill any kind of friendship need. He does not see the appeal or want for friends, which renders him a total b*****d in certain viewpoints. And perhaps more aggravatingly, this does not even concern him slightly. He simply does not understand the value of human companionship and does not want to.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION
Eyes: Very nearly white, with a dark blue limbus (ring at the very edge of the iris). Pinpoint pupils.
Hair: Jet black, wild. Sometimes loosely tamed in a ferocious ponytail. It is straight mostly, yet incredibly boisterous.
Face: Chiseled, angled, very trim. Straight nose. Tanned. Has a tattoo around one eye (like
this but only half of the circle, on the outside of his right eye). He has other tattoos on his body, which can be discussed with the artist.
Clothes: Ripped jeans, sporting grease stains, sleeveless hoody with fur trim around the hood. Black wifebeater underneath. Wears leather bracelets and a tooth necklace.
