Ujana was bored out of her mind. Since when had her hometown been so... Peaceful? The youngling folded her arms and let out a huff, before sitting straight down in the dirt to play with the sand. Sand, sand, SAAAND, it wasn't anywhere near as fun as people made it out to be. But, what else was there to do when there was nothing to do? She let out a despairing groan, flopped backwards onto her back, and flailed up towards her house.
"PAD-MAAAA!" She cried. "Do you wanna go wrestle a Scorra because I'm going to do it alone if you don't come along!"

Now Padma, being the good daughter, was trying to keep herself busy and out of trouble. But papa didn't like her getting in the jars or garden - and she wanted so badly to learn needlework, or to learn how to take mama's sashes and turn them into pretty skirts. But she wasn't big enough for needles or to learn how to tan leathers, so instead she had to sit - twiddling her thumbs.
So when Ujana called, Padma was simultaneously relieved - and horrified. "What?! You're crazy!!" The girl yelped, scrambling to her feet and clambering down the ladder to the house, 'glaring' down at her sister below her. "Papa is gonna kill you himself, if the scorra don't!" She said haughtily as she finally got to the ground, setting her hands obstinately on her hips.

Ujana sprang up from the dirt, a wave of sand flying out from underneath her, and mocked her sister's stance, except with her eyes crossed and her tongue sticking out. Oh, boo-hoo, daddy wasn't going to do no such thing because he loved her and knew that she could EASILY figure out how to make itching powder if she really wanted to. She'd already tried it once when he'd told her off about not doing her chores and he couldn't get it out of his shoes for weeks afterwards! Sure, she got in trouble BIG TIME, but it was worth it! After a moment of teasing, Ujana blew a raspberry at Padma and turned to flee toward the desert.
"Daddy's not here to tell us what to dooo!" She cheered. "Stop being such a baby and come wrestle! It'll be FUN!"

Padma puffed out her cheeks and made an angry noise in her throat, clearly displeased by her sister's teasing. But without Padma, the smart one, Ujana was done for ! So Padma quickly pattered after her, ignoring the fact that the sand did feel quite pleasant between her toes. She took heavy, exaggerated steps after her sister as if it was a great chore to go with her, but silently enjoyed wiggling her toes in the silky sand.
"This is why I'M the favorite, Uja!" Padma shot back with a disdainful, but somewhat plainful sniff, hiding the smile that peeked up on her face despite it. If she said it was Uja that pulled her along, she could have fun - then say it wasn't her fault when things went bad - right?

"Oh, boo-hoo!" Ujana cried, sticking her tongue out at Padma. "Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words of a baby will never hurt me!"
She skidded as she ran, purposely kicking up as much sand as possible to keep her sister as far behind her. However, the fact that Padma had the nerve to follow her in the first place was commendable, she was usually the one who stayed home and did nothing all day! Maybe she could be fun? Uja wrinkled her nose. NAH. Her sister could never be fun. Never ever ever!
"Come on, catch up! I already see the Scorra!" She cheered, jumping up and down. "You gotta be faster if you wanna grow up strong like uncle Yaho!"

The other girl grimaced and fumed, dancing away from tracing her sister's footsteps in the sun-heated sand to avoid getting pelted with debris. At Uja's continued taunts, however, Padma let out a startled laugh, rolling her eyes and slowing her running, if only to do the opposite of what her sister bid.
"I don't WANNA be strong like Uncle Yaho, Uja - and you'd look pretty dumb that big anyway!" Padma said with loud disdain. She adored her uncle, but at the same time he was very big - tall and bulky. Imagining Ujana's cherubic face on such a muscled mass made Padma laugh at the image.

Ujana stopped in place, the sand around her kicking up like smoke, and narrowed her gaze. How could Padma not want to be like uncle Yaho? Uncle Yaho was the strongest person in the world! He could move mountains, break bricks on people's heads, and carry three times his weight if he wanted to! ...Well, she really didn't know if he could do any of that, but she was sure he could if he tried! She folded her arms and turned her nose in the air.
"You don't know how stupid you just sounded!" She said, spitefully. "How can we keep the village safe if we don't get big and strong? We gotta get muscled up!"

Padma matched her sister's look - her nose wrinkling at Ujana's presumption. "You can protect places without lots of muscles, you know - look at papa." Well, he didn't go hunting... and he didn't really fight. But their papa healed people - and their mama made people happy by dancing. So who said you had to be muscley to protect anything? "And I don't wanna do that stuff anyway - you can go hit things with rocks if you really want to get muscley." Not that Padma knew what she wanted to do - right now she was happy to help Papa in the garden, or sew small, messy patterns into cloth for fun.

Ujana's shoulders arched at Padma's reply. She had expected this sort of nonsense from her sister, who was a complete suck up when it came to their daddy, but that didn't mean there wasn't any time left for Ujana to try and change her sister's mindset. She placed her hands on her hips, shook her head, and rolled her eyes.
"Healers can't do anything except heal, dummy!" She announced, sticking her nose in the air. "Look, I know he's our daddy, but healers can't fight at all! This is why we were born, Padma, so we could protect him from danger! He's only gonna get more weak and that's why we need to get bigger and stronger!"
She nodded to herself, affirming her own thought process, and huffed.
"Rocks are only part of what it takes to get stronger! But, you wouldn't know that because you're a big sissy like daddy!" She continued, sticking her tongue out. "You need to eat lots of meat and sleep lots, too! If you watched uncle Yaho, like I've been doing since we were babies, you'd know all that by now!"

Flushing with anger, Padma stopped following and instead folded her arms poutily over her chest, giving her sister a hard look. "Uncle Yaho is big because he's part tree lady - you can't get that big, Uja, not if you ate and slept all day!" Besides which, she wasn't sure if Uncle Yaholo hunted at all - with that big hammer, anything he tried to catch would be squished into a patty, and wouldn't be worth anything at all!
Food was more important - papa had taken them to the market and she'd watched as his work - his poultices and healing herbs he gathered were traded for yummy bulbs, imported fruits, and delicate nuts. Even meat!
"At least Papa actually DOES stuff all day."

Ujana clenched her fists in response to Padma's words. She could so get that big! She would, she would, she would! The youngling stamped her foot against the dirt and heaved in a breath, the scent of the dirt swelling around her only adding to the fire in her chest. What did her sister know? She thought she was so smart because she was daddy's favorite!
"Uncle Yaho does MORE STUFF!" She snarled, shaking her head. "He fights in wars, protects whole villages from bad guys, and makes people feel safe! All healers do is heal people that don't listen to people like uncle Yaho! They're dumb and get hurt instead of staying put where they belong, so they go to someone who didn't want to be a real fighter like daddy to get healed! Then they go out and do the same stupid thing again so daddy gets to keep his job! It's all a bunch of nonsense, Padma!"
She tugged in another breath and echoed Padma's stance.
"I swear, once I get my BIG SWORDS, I'm gonna make you understand! You'll be so jealous when I'm saving villages and you're just cleaning up all the blood and guts on the side of the road!"

It wasn't that Padma actually had anything against Uncle Yaholo - she loved him, a lot! But in this moment anything she could say to argue to Ujana was fair game, and she didn't think about exactly what she was saying either. Kicking sand at her sister, Padma raised her voice into the shrill shout of an unhappy child, "There's not gonna be wars forever, daddy said so! One day you and Uncle Yaho will be sitting on your butts because there's nothing to fight, and you'll starve and DIE because you aren't helping anybody! And me and daddy and momma are gonna be eating all the bulbs we want because daddy actually takes care of people! When you want some, I won't give you any because you're DUMB."
Another case of cruel things children say - Padma never would actually do that, and she didn't really think Ujana was dumb - not really.

Ujana froze at Padma's words and actually had to lean back a little just to process what she had said. Padma actually had a backbone somewhere in there? Like, what? Really? When did this happen? Was she sick or was this some of Ujana's influence finally rubbing off on her? She would refrain from saying this aloud, but she was kind of... Proud? Yeah, that was it, proud. All hope wasn't lost for her frail, teacher's pet of a sister after all! Her lean fell into an arch, her arms slowly folding, and a smirk painted itself over her chubby cheeks.
"Who said mama would be with you? I'm mama's favorite, remember?" She seethed, her expression becoming further smug. "She'd sneak all of your roots to me because she loves me, and you know it!"
She found herself stepping forward before her thoughts could catch up with her, her arms unfolding and arching into balled fists.
"And I'm DUMB? You're the one who's dumb, Padma! You don't want to do noth'in but sit around and ruin stuff with your bad sewing!" She spat, smacking her fist into her palm. "Even mama knows it's bad sewing, but she's too nice to a-ad... Say anything about it!"

For a moment, the fury of her words dimmed at Ujana's stunned expression, and a curl of uncertainty rose in her belly, quirking her brow down in thought. But soon enough Ujana recovered and tossed a cocky, but scary smirk. Even if Padma had started the 'who is the favorite' game, having it thrown back at her left her flushed and furious. Stamping her foot, she blustered, unable to get her thoughts out past her lips.
Which further frustrated her. "I don't- I don't RUIN stuff- shut up!" Padma shrieked.
It was Ujana stepping closer, and threateningly hitting her palm that did it. Padma lunged forward with a yell, with every intention of knocking her sister into the sand and yanking at her hair, her arguments falling into unintelligible shrieking, with the occasional 'hate you' and 'stupid' thrown in for good measure.

Ujana was absolutely not ready for Padma's lunge and slammed down to the earth like a sack of bricks. Dust swirled up all around them like a cloud and continued to swell as Ujana flailed around under her sister's weight. Who knew Padma was so heavy? Her hands were like claws, too, honestly! The way she had them yanking at her hair, it was almost something to be proud of. Too bad she was using all this energy against Ujana and not on someone who was an actual threat.
"I hate you, too!" She shrieked, spitting in Padma's face. "You're a stupid suck up that no one likes and I wish you would disappear!"
She shoved at Padma with her feet and aimed for her stomach and chest, hoping to knock the wind out of her so she could wiggle free and escape.
