The plastic bag dandled from Quartz's fingers, laden heavy with its appointed burden. The door to the first cell -- they were calling them cells -- swung open, and he stepped inside, gold boots making footfalls in the dark: heavy with the weight of the muscle they carried, but softened by the dust still on the floor.

This was, in truth, a storage room. Here was where, once upon a time, some cheap carnival had stored its stage props and set pieces. And in the center of this room, providing her own glow -- strapped and chained to the worn old turntable that knife-throwers used for their targets -- was one of the captives they'd brought in.

A captain stood off to the side, one of many strangers that Quartz didn't know. He didn't bother trying to send the woman away; she outranked him, and he had no illusions that privacy meant keeping any secrets from his General even if she did. Schörl knew everything, somehow, even if she was only reading it in some tiny tic of his face. What did it matter?

He set down his plastic bag and pulled out one of the water bottles that had been inside it. Hello, Aquafina, my old friend.

"I don't have any questions," he said dully. "I brought water for you."

Penthesilea had been shouting obscenities for hours, and were she feeling honest, she would admit that her throat was sore. She was not feeling particularly honest.

The new Lieutenant was met with a dark sneer. He was completely unfamiliar, but she didn't particularly care, because her vitriol was directed at every single one of her captors and even one apparently bringing gifts of water or food was not to be trusted, in her opinion. <******** off," she snarled, her voice raspy. Her sore throat betrayed her, even if her rage was not lessened. "******** am I supposed t'trust it? For all I knwo you've got some wacky-a** poison s**t in there. Youma blood or somethin' that'll make me spill my guts. So you can take it an' shove it right up your a**, feet pue tan." She sank back onto the board she was chained to, as much as possible, and grit her teeth. For all she knew, he was going to force it on her.

Well, here was a happy camper!

Her angry shouting would've made him feel a satisfying sort of camaraderie once. Now, it was like a stone being dropped down a well -- a long, silent fall, well forgotten before it ever hit bottom and made any splash in his psyche. She would shout loudly and break hard, when the time came. When Schörl came for her. He pitied this one.

Quartz gave her a look that was mostly enh mixed with a side of well, whatever. "The dreaded Aquafina, yes," he agreed mildly. "I'll open it in front of you and take the first sip, if you want."

He approached, intending to do just that. "Do you want me to spin you sideways a little? It might seem counterintuitive, comfort-wise, but it'll give these muscle groups a break and let the other ones take over for a little while."

"Yeah, sure, go right ******** ahead with that," Penthe said, but her voice was a little less sharp - because, well, she had never been confronted with this level of apathy in an agent of Chaos before. Most of them at least displayed some sort of feeling - anger, or sometimes fear, or, well...literally anything but blank uncaring nothing.

"Th'...water an' the spinnin'," she waved a hand as well as she could all tied up. "Really? No questions? At all? I mean, ain't us glowy folk th'ones y'all are after in this? An' you've got nothin'?"

Penthe's thought process was reduced, mostly, to variations on the theme of 'What the ******** is wit this guy,' sometimes accompanied by 'what is he on and where can I get some.' Chaos made you crazy and violent, in her experience (or maybe just more crazy and violent, maybe that was sort of inherent in her), not...not blank like this.

He dealt with the wheel first, grabbing it by one of the spokes and slowly rotating it till she was tipped slightly to the other direction, rebalancing her weight a little to force her muscles to bear a new balance. Quartz let go and stepped back -- then held up the bottle and cracked it fresh, so she could see the seal on the cap break. The first gulp went down cool -- he gargled it audibly for her benefit, then swallowed and showed her his tongue. The rest, he held the bottle to her mouth to help her drink.

"No questions," he said. "I couldn't really care less what they're after in this. I follow orders to avoid pain and punishment -- nothing else is important. I'm what you'd call a conscript."

Quartz handled her carefully, slow with the water, trying to get some of the sweat-damp hair out of her face to where it would stay tucked back.

"She's going to hurt you, you know," he said softly.

Penthesilea was surprised how much better she felt just being tilted, but it gave relief to muscles that ached simply from the strain of being there for hours. (When she had been younger, and her mother more devoutly churchgoing Catholic, she had wondered how crucifixion was a torture. She would never wonder that again, because even simply bound to the wheel, with her weight distributed fairly well and without the nails, she ached from the strain of holding herself up.)

She was not often given to introspection, but being hung on a rack to dry with few visitors meant that she had lots and lots of time to think, and she had spent a lot of time running over the dead officers she had left in her wake. This Lieutenant's words brought them back, and she felt a twinge of guilt in her gut. How many had been like him, obeying only out of fear?

When water was offered, she took it, greedily, having shoved off the realization of how hungry and thirsty she really was until it was right in front of her. His gentleness with her hair was a surprise - of all things, he was worried about her bangs in her eyes? (And her hair was a disaster anyway, the pieces that held it together long gone, and it back to a nearly thigh-length tumble of red-orange knotted, wet mess.)

The threat of a mysterious "she" seemed odd, because the only "she" that came to mind was Lellouch, and all things considered she was pretty sure that Lellouch liked her, or was at least amused by her, enough that it wouldn't be too bad.

"She? Who ******** dy'a mean?" She asked, when the water was removed. "I ain't afraid'a her, whoever it is."

"The General," he said, studying her face. "She's good at getting what she wants." He took the water away when she'd finished the bottle. "If you can't give her what she wants, try to at least be clever. She likes it when you're clever."

Quartz dusted off his hands. "Stubborn silence alone won't win you the day. Don't bother. She considers it an opening bid."

A General. Not Lellouch, then. Lellouch was a rank below her, and a Senshi at that....which just meant that Penthe was now infinitely more confused. And perhaps actually a little nervous, now. Because if it wasn't personal - or at least, she wasn't aware of anyone for whom it sohuld be personal - then that meant that somewhere in the Negaverse was a General sadistic enough that she had apparently even cowed her own people.

"I don't do stubborn silence," Penthe said. No, instead she did angry swearing, promises of revenge, et cetera, but really it was all posturing. If they ever broke her down enough, she was fairly certain she would die quickly, because she truly did not know jack s**t about what they wanted. It wasn't posturing, she barely knew what had happened to her.

Quartz quirked an eyebrow in vague amusement. "No," he agreed wryly, "I don't suppose you do."

He halted by the door, before opening it. "She'll honor what she offers," he advised as a final word. "But she doesn't take requests. Good luck to you."
