She couldn't believe it was already morning, the sun cresting over the distant hills in glorious shades of orange and yellow. She was bone-weary from a productive night of hunting, her belly full of rabbit. They were small so she had hunted down several - it had taken most of the night. She yawned deeply and steered herself towards a glittering bit of blue down below, pulling her wings in closer to her body to dive. She put down a few yards from the edge of a river that had already begun to crust over at the edges as the onslaught of winter took its toll. The river was too fast in the middle to be in danger of freezing over even in the deep of winter, and Wretch used it often.

She gritted her teeth against the anticipated cold and splashed in knee-deep to wash the blood from her hooves and legs, dipping to splash her face as well. She didn't want to remain sticky from the fruits of her kill. She backed out a bit and shook off to dry, shivering in the cool morning air. She bent again to drink deeply, contentment washing over her.

The realization that his goals would never been achieved had left Pankratios a shell of his former glory. In his own mind he could not fathom what had gone wrong in the last year but he knew that his time of slinking around in the shadows was about to come to an end. Being one with the shadows offered the stallion concealment while he tried to devise various schemes but it also left him vulnerable. If there was one thing that the draft Kalona would not have it was being labeled with that disgusting word. The stallion had tried to keep tabs on the former members of his herd while slinking in the shadows but it had been all for naught. The Great Kalona herd was finished.

There was nothing to indicate the foul mood that Pankratios was in as he strolled out of the foliage towards the river that he had scoped out the morning before. It promised him a steady source of water and without a care in the world he moved towards the bank before stopping up short. A female Kalona was already at the bank and there was a strange sense of familiarity that overcame him. Shedding the irritation of that familiarity Pan continued to the bank, purposely ignoring the female nearby.

Wretch stopped dead and rose from the water as the shadow passed over her. He had come from nowhere, silent as death. When she realized it was another kalona she couldn't really be surprised he had caught her unaware. Her muscles were tightened defensively as she faced him directly, trying to gauge her chances against the hulking stallion. But to her shock he turned and ignored her was complete. Did he not even see her as a threat? Was she so far beneath him? She narrowed her eyes as she watched him, her teeth grating. She was tempted to teach the male some proper respect, but his size alone was enough to give her pause.

As she studied him from a distance she found something oddly familiar about him. She'd run into some of the others from the great herd in the year since it'd dissolved, so it wasn't so far-fetched he may have come from it as well. That didn't necessarily bode well though. Many of the kalona from the Herd had turned on their fellows, fighting alongside the lesser races. That sort of treachery could not stand. She approached him carefully, muscles coiled and ready to take to the air if he attacked. "You look familiar. You didn't happen to belong to the Great Herd, did you?" She kept her tone carefully neutral, studying him as she said it.

There was no indication at first that Pankratios had even heard the question posed to him by the kalona mare. However playing the ignorant role would surely lead to confrontation and the stallion wasn't wanting to exert the energy defending himself from an attack. Snarling softly the stallion quaffed a mouthful of river water before turning to face the unknown mare. Except for the fact that she was not an unknown. She had placed him correctly and that would have meant that she too was part of the Great Kalona Herd.

This was rather interesting. As soon as he had given up on rebuilding the herd here comes another ex-member. Gruff and rough sounding he spoke briskly, "You have identified me correctly. Since you ask though I assume you too were a part of the herd. Am I correct?"

As he waited for an answer Pan sized up the mare. She was of a slimmer build being a female but his draft size seemed to dwarf her smaller frame. If it came down to a fight Pan might have the advantage if he could pin the mare to the ground. But it would be better to avoid a fight ... for now.

She couldn't quite get a read on him and whether he might have been one that had turned on the the herd. He didn't seem defensive when she had named him a former member though, and that boded well. Still, she maintained a ready posture in case the situation changed and she needed to attack or flee.

"Yes, you have assumed correctly. I was there until the final battle," she added carefully, watching his reaction. She wasn't itching for a fight with this giant of a stallion, but she would not be able to keep her temper if she found him to be a traitor to the Kalona blood.

Still, even with her suspicions, she was finding this to be a rather interesting encounter. She had met some sub-standard kalona in her time, weak and willing to mingle with lesser races. They'd lost their Pride and lost their ways entirely. Any time she has found a worthy kalona, regardless the outcome, it has warmed her heart.

She felt his eyes on her, sizing her up and subconsciously stood a little straighter, puffing herself up to show off her firmly toned body. She was a proud hunter and fighter and was not at all shy about that. "See something you like?" she asked mockingly with a little grin, flicking her tail around playfully and watching him carefully.

Pankratios's tail flicked out behind him, the many coils snapping through the air as he pondered the mare's response. How would she react if he admitted that he had not been there for the final battle? The stallion gave an internal shrug in response to his musings. Why should he care what she thought? Colorless eyes locked on the mare as she asked her question and Pankratios allowed himself a moment to put the female on edge with not providing an answer. Finally he gave a silent sound before speaking. "Maybe I do like what I see, maybe I don't. I do not think it matters whatever the answer though."

Realizing that he had probably just ruffled the mare's figurative feathers Pankratios walked past her heading towards the river. He'd slake his thirst while she mulled over her answer. He kept an ear cocked in her direction as he lowered his head to the water's edge.

She stood guarded and ready as he mulled over her words, her head cocked slightly to the side. Was he testing her somehow, probing her for information of some sort? What could he possibly want her to know? Or perhaps he was hiding something from her, some sympathy for the lesser races perhaps, or perhaps he HAD turned on the kalona herd. She ground her teeth slightly at the thought, then shook her head to clear it of such thoughts.

When he finally shrugged and then spoke she relaxed considerably. Was this some weird way of flirting? Or was this male really this indecisive? He either likes what he see or doesn't, and while she'd agree it was irrelevant as to which, she couldn't guess at why he would give such an inconclusive answer and then walk away. Was he expecting her to watch him go or follow him? Wretch was no follower, and she wouldn't give him the satisfaction. He was playing cool, and she could do the same.

"It doesn't matter to me what you think either way," she said to his backside as he drank at the river. He wasn't too far away and could certainly hear her. She flicked her tail dismissively.
