His warm breath froze into misty tendrils, crystallising in the chilly air. It wrapped around his muzzle, wreathing it in a cloud of white. Winter, the stallion decided, was definitely upon them. Soon the ground would be smothered in a blanket of snow, colouring everything a brilliant white and obscuring the familiar landmarks all around him. The trees had already lost their leaves in preparation for the coming cold, the flowers long wilted away before autumn had even started. Everything looked bare, branches revealing their skinny and twisted natures without their usual cover of vegetation. Although he had to admit that his frosty surroundings held their own beauty, he was still mournful that summer had truly ended. He loved seeing the flowers blooming in full force, the bright colours and scents enticing him. Yes, summer was definitely his favourite season.

He gave his hooves a stomp against the hard ground, working warmth back into his still muscles. Of course, he knew there were certain flowers that bloomed only in the heart of winter. He had set himself a challenge to go and seek them out, to study their lifestyles as much as he could. From the small yet highly fragrant snowdrops to the lightly coloured clematis flowers, he wanted to see them all. He especially wished to see the holly berries again this year, a rich scarlet standing out against the pure white covering the rest of the land. They were incredibly common, but none the less beautiful for it. But for now, there really wasn’t a lot to see plant-wise. And that was one of the reasons why he was here.

He gave himself a shake, casting his eyes around the bare clearing. It had all been Alaka’i's idea, and in fact Lamiales had had no idea what his best friend had been planning for him. Of all the crazy things that stallion sometimes did, this had to be one of the more bizarre ones. He reflected back to their conversation, still unsure of why exactly he had accepted the bizarre proposition.

”Hey Lam, I’ve been thinking.” That had been the start, and he should have suspected something was up from the outset. Alaka’i never began a sentence saying that he’d been thinking, it just wasn’t in his nature to think about anything more than this next meal. ”All you ever do is look at plants and stuff. Come on man, that’s no way to live your life.” Of course, he had protested, explaining that he liked his plants. Besides, this was the way his own hooves had led him and he had no complaints. He knew if his life wanted to call him to a particular purpose, the spirits would guide him to his eventual destiny. He might as well enjoy himself in the mean time, and admiring the nature around him was the best way he could hope to do that. ”So I set you up. You know, with a mare.”

Now that he hadn’t expected, why would Alaka’i set him up with a mare when he could go swoon her himself? He’d called him out on the fact, suspicions riding high in his mind. ”Well, it’s not like… a date exactly. I paid her to keep you company for a while. Come on man, it’ll be fun! You need it.”

Well, whether it would be fun or not had yet to be determined. Lamiales had been half-tempted not even to show up, just to spite his empty-brained friend, but then what else did he really have to do? Besides, it would be nice to talk to someone else, he had to admit. It had been a long while since he’d seen anyone else, as he’d spent most of the year wrapped in some obscure part of the forest where anyone seldom went. The idea had refused to leave him alone, so there he was. Waiting, unsure of what exactly to expect from this mystery mare.

Sayerauho was an entertainer and a companion. It was her life's work, her life's joy, to follow her mother's traditions. There was history in her work, and while some in the Kawani might frown upon the mare for her choices, she paid them little heed. This was not their life, it was her's, and the hippo'gryph mare took her duties seriously. She lived to a strict code, with every moment, every breath made reverently and with great purpose. She wasn't just some cheap entertainer, nor some easy mare; she had class, she had poise, and from the moment she accepted this job, she had done what she could to prepare for this stranger stallion, Lamiales.

It wasn't the most unusual of jobs she'd held. Sometimes she was brought in to entertain an entire herd with stories, singing, dancing, and more. . sometimes it was more one-on-one with her talking to them, caring for them, or generally doing whatever she could to make their day, their night, their time spent enjoyable. It wasn't always a fling, in fact, Sayerauho was more an accessory than anything else. But. No matter the circumstance, no matter who she was with, she was always in control, and she always made sure her company was left knowing that she had made them her world.

This Lamiales would be no different. What she'd been told had been minimal, but enough for her to accept. The stallion apparently worked too hard and played too little; he was so engrossed in flowers that he seemed to be without much of a social life. This is where she came in. She was to spend some time with him. . . It was a simple enough affair. Whether he wished to speak, to be entertained, to play games, to disregard her completely, she'd find out soon enough. From there, she could let things happen as they would. It didn't matter what they did, really. . . She had received the requested food stuffs, stones, and materials that would serve her small herd well. Now it was up to her to do her part.

Though it was cold, the blue mare thought little of the weather. She sported her usual bells, and the slight sheer wrap of cloth that had been a gift from the stallion whom sired her. She had made sure her small, winged, ankle bracelets and headpiece were all but sparkling, and that her shorter blue-purple mane was in perfect shape. Every thing about her was styled with purpose, for she wanted nothing more than to give a good impression to this stranger she was to speak with. After all, she knew not what he liked, but she would come to know it in due time.

As she approached the designated meeting place, a flash of red, black and cream stood out stark against the dull tones of the winter earth. It was very much a stallion, and Sayerauho was quite certain this might be the mystery Lamiales that she had been sent to entertain. The bells twinkled and jingled softly with every step she made; they were not loud and would not interrupt them should they wish to walk or talk. She gave a small swish of her feathered tail, a warm smile crossing her features as she confidently approached. "Might you by Lamiales, my fine stallion?" She finally spoke, her words sultry but with the slightest hint of a whistle through them. It was clear Sayerauho possessed strong bird like traits. . . her words would always have the hint of birdsong woven through them. Once she was close enough, she gave the stallion a formal bow, her movements ever fluid and graceful.

His nerves had been starting to get to him, he wasn’t good with… dates. Or ladies. Not that this would exactly be a date, he hadn’t asked her out or anything… oh bother, what would he even classify this meeting as? Alaka’i had paid her to come and speak to him. This was going to be mortifying. His muscles knit themselves together within his chest, constraining his breathing as he worried over the oncoming meeting. What would he talk about? He liked flowers, flowers darn it. Would she like flowers? What kind of mare would want to hear him rant about… He took a deep breath, trying to sooth the doubts that had crept into his brain. Normally he wouldn’t be this bad, in fact he was usually quiet calm and collected, but this situation was just far enough out of his comfort zone that he was on edge. After all, what could he even expect?

A sultry whistle broke through Lamiales’ reverie, snapping him to attention. The voice echoed confidence and warmth, and instantly sent calming waves through him. He turned his head slowly, his heart racing as his thoughts stammered through his brain. And then he saw her. Time seemed to slow. Right down, seconds stretching into minutes, days, hours. Warm eyes gazed up and down her.

She was… beautiful. Lamiales blinked, feeling heat flood through him all at once. It wasn’t the soft blue of her fur, nor the immaculately styled hair. Everything about her seemed to be done perfectly, everything in place, not a feather ruffled more than it had to be. Even her bells were aligned with each other, shining brightly in the soft light. But that wasn’t it. She was, of course, beautiful in the aesthetic sense of the word, but that wasn’t what caught his breath in that moment. No, it was the gentle fire in her eyes that made it feel like she could light up his whole soul. It was the strong, yet delicate, way in which she carried herself, like nothing could ever bring her down. It was the confidence that seemed to whisper through every strand of hair, every brush of fur, every barb of her feathers.

Lamiales cleared his throat, feeling his own self-assurance grow in response. His neck arched itself just that little bit higher than usual, his muscles tightening instinctively to bring attention to his musculature. He dipped his head towards her, a smile creeping onto his face. “You must be my… date who isn’t a date at all.” He gave a low chuckle, almost laughing at himself and the whole situation. “I’m Lamiales, pleased to meet you.” And he found it was surprisingly true, it was nice to just… meet someone new. Even if they’d only met for a second.
