Pinzin Kneadles wasn’t prone to fits of depression or feeling bad for himself. All things considered, he was a rather optimistic individual. But everyone had bad days, and this was most certainly one of those days. It had started off horribly, with a sudden waterfall dumping on his head. The tree he had chosen to take shelter under had apparently gathered up rainwater in its massive leaves only to break and dump it all at once. Of course, water and his skin didn’t work well together. It took him hours to dry out, and the humid weather certainly didn’t help. He was still feeling a bit damp. And then there was the mud that squelched under his hooves with every step he took. That was going to stain. And here he was, trying to find a nice sunny spot where he could finish drying off. He hated being wet. It always made him feel so much heavier, made it so much harder to move. He was certain that once he was fully dry, this dark mood that was hovering over him would go away. He could find the bright in everything… once he was dry.

Autymn loved the rain. She loved listening to it, watching it, playing in it. It reminded her of her favorite season, the one which she was named after. After the previous evening’s rain storm, she was in a particularly good mood, happily jumping from puddle to puddle. Oh, sure, she got mud all over her pretty coat, but that was what rivers were for. One quick swim and she’d be right as rain. She giggled at her own silliness as she pounced yet another puddle. She was more brown than golden now, which wasn’t a problem, really. The only problem with rain was the fact that it made running a bit trickier. It wasn’t a big problem, just a little one. There was nothing Autymn loved more than running, racing with the wind through her mane. But the rain had a way of making the tracks slicker, and mud, while amusing to run and jump in, could also hide traps like mud pits or rocks just beneath the surface. Things that were no trouble normally became more dangerous when the ground was wet. Which was why she was simply jumping along rather than racing. Though… jumping was getting a bit boring. She grinned to herself and decided to take a chance as she neared a bend. In the center of that bend was a huge puddle. With a soft whoop, she raced toward it and jumped straight into the center of it, creating a massive splash.

He was just nearing a bend in the path when he heard an odd thumping sound. For a moment it sounded almost like someone was running, but his luck couldn’t possibly be that bad. Surely, after everything else he had dealt with today, he wouldn’t also have to deal with company. The thought had no sooner crossed his mind than something appeared out of nowhere and he was, once again, drenched in a massive wave from the puddle just ahead of him.

Autymn laughed as the water settled around him. That. Was. Awesome! It wasn’t until she shook her soaked mane from her eyes that she saw she had caught an innocent bystander in her splash. “Er… oops…” she muttered, blinking at the strange creature that stood on the other side of the bend.

Oops? Oops?! That was all she had to say? He had been dry… well… drier. And now he was not only soaked, he was muddy. Muddy! He hated being wet, and he hated being muddy. Now, not only would it take him forever for him to dry up, he’d be itchy while the mud became dirt. He’d have to duck himself into a clean lake, getting wet all over again. And all she had to say for herself was oops? He wanted to demand that she explain herself. He wanted to ask what she thought she was doing, running around like that. Had she even been paying attention to where she was going? He even got as far as trying to form the words before the tug on his lips reminded him of how futile it would be to try and yell at her. So instead, he could only stand there, dripping wet and muddy, fuming silently.

Oookay, this fellow did not look happy. Autymn flashed him her best, apologetic smile. “Sorry about that,” she said, carefully wading her way out of the puddle. “I wasn’t expecting anyone to be here. Or rather, I didn’t see you there. I just saw the puddle and… well… splash,” she giggled nervously. The stallion’s silence was starting to get to her, even after just a few seconds. He looked furious, but he wasn’t yelling at her or cursing or doing any of the normal things strangers usually did when she splashed them, or ran them over by accident. Autymn wasn’t exactly known for paying attention to where she was going, as was just proven by this whole puddle fiasco. But rather than expressing his anger, he just stood there. Staring at her. It was creepy. She fidgeted a bit, swishing her tail back and forth as she waited for the explosion she could sense coming.

Her apology should have made Pinzin feel better. She was probably genuinely sorry, but he couldn’t gauge her sincerity properly. All he could see was red. And when she flicked her tail… was she trying to taunt him? Was she rubbing it in? What had he done to deserve this?! His inability to yell at her only riled him up more. He tried to breathe, to cool his temper, but that didn’t work. He tried stamping his hooves to vent some of his frustration, but only succeeded in splashing a bit of water on himself. Finally, he let out a frustrated scream, which came out more as a muffled groan.

Autymn jumped when he stamped his hooves, and just barely managed to keep from giggling when he splashed her with a bit of water from the puddle. For a second, she thought that he wasn’t mad after all. That he liked playing around in the puddles as much as she did. But then he gave a muffled groan that was filled with frustration. She took a cautious step backward. “Erm… hey, are you okay? You don’t… uh… I mean…” she really wasn’t sure what she meant. She wanted to say he didn’t look so good, but that seemed rude, and she had a feeling she shouldn’t push her luck.

Pinzin had no idea what, exactly, she was trying to say, and he didn’t really care. He was too busy trying to control his own temper. Trying to yell at her would do no good. She clearly didn’t have any clue just how badly she had upset him. Well, maybe she had some idea of how upset he was. She seemed to be shrinking back from him a bit. A small part of him winced when he saw that. That tiny bit helped him swallow his anger. It wasn’t her fault, he told himself. She had just been having fun. Oh, sure, she definitely should have looked before she leapt. If she had, then she would have seen him, and she would have known what had happened. He had to give her the benefit of the doubt and believe that she would have avoided splashing him. With a deep breath, forcing back the last bits of his anger, he took first one step then another away from her. Once he had enough room, he turned around and started back up the path he had been heading down. There was a lake not too far away, he knew. He could try washing off the mud there.

Sensing that the danger had passed, curiosity got the better of Autymn. She watched as the stallion backed away and then turned. When he started walking away from her, she waded out of the puddle and followed him, wondering where he was going. Oh, he still scared her somewhat, so she stayed a safe distance away from him. She was confidence she could out run him if need be. Until that became necessary, though, she wanted to know where he was going, or at least why he hadn’t yelled at her like he had clearly wanted to. As she trailed behind him, as quietly as she could, she realized that he was a rather unusual looking fellow. She had thought that the dark coloring on his coat had been mud, but on closer examination it looked more like… some kind of fabric. Was he wearing a cloak of some sort? Well, he had a saddle, it looked like. She wondered, absently, if his saddle was as comfortable as hers was. It didn’t look like it would be, what with those pins sticking through it. Were they poking into him, or just the saddle? Well… she couldn’t imagine why he’d be wearing it if it was uncomfortable.

The mare wasn’t nearly as subtle as she probably thought she was. Pinzin knew he was being followed. Under the squish, squish, squish of his own footsteps, he could hear the clopping of her hooves. He assumed that it was the mare that had splashed him. Who else would be following him? Then again… why would she? Hadn’t she done enough damage to him?

Unaware of what the stallion was thinking, Autymn’s own thoughts were going full speed ahead. She had moved her study on from his odd saddle and to his interesting mane and tail. She’d never seen anyone with such an... unusual mane or tail. With a flick of her own tail, she decided that the style suited him.

When Pinzin turned another corner he glanced behind him as subtly as possible to confirmed that it was, indeed, the mare that was following him. Satisfied that it wasn’t some sort of danger or threat, he continued on, though he still wasn’t certain why she was following him in the first place. Perhaps he was simply going in the same direction she had been planning on going in the first place. That had to be the explanation. Why else would she be trailing after him? He definitely hadn’t done anything to make her think he would welcome her company. His temper was already beginning to cool, and he regretted being so… hostile toward her. Granted, it wasn’t as though he had been able to say any of the hurtful things he had wanted to in the heat of the moment, but he had thought them and he had WANTED to say them. That, in his mind, made him just as guilty as if he had actually voiced them aloud. He heaved a sigh. A fork in the path was coming up. He was going to go left, no doubt she would go right. People always seemed to go to the right. That would be the end of it, most likely.

Autymn trailed after him, watching him closely. She probably should have paid closer attention to where they were. After all, it was possible that he was leading her into a trap. Her instincts told her he wasn’t, though, and they rarely led her wrong. Despite his initial, weird groan of frustration, this stallion had done nothing for her to really be afraid of. After thinking carefully on this, she had felt her fear and intimidation bleed away and her curiosity, already a driving force, became even more dominant. It was because she was watching him so intently that she noticed when some of the tension bled out of his muscles. Though his pace didn’t change, she had the distinct impression that he had calmed down a bit. So, then, he must have lost his temper for a few seconds. Maybe he was better now? Feeling a bit more confident, she picked up her pace. Not much, just half a step. Enough to bring her a bit closer to him. And then she noticed the fork in the road just ahead of him. Her curiosity nagged at her. Would he go left or right?
