Late. His apprentice was late. The High Lord shifted in his seat, a frown marring his normally stoic expression. He himself valued punctuality very highly, and he knew that the young hybrid that he now called his apprentice was aware of that fact. Shawn had often voiced his own preference of timeliness to tardiness, mostly complaining about his siblings' refusal to do anything in a prompt manner. Faelnirv allowed himself a small smile - the dynamic of his friends' family was something of an amusement. It reminded him of his own, at times, though only for his memories to enjoy.
So it was, then. He sighed to himself, eyes trailing over the ancient texts spilling over his coffee table. Vampiric magic was something he was familiar with - intimately familiar, much to his past chagrin. Though now, he supposed, it was most fortuitous for his friends that he knew such things. Had he not, Tomas and Shay might've lost their youngest son to one of the more vicious covens of Vampires - old ones with much influence and harsh rules meant to cloister the few Vampires in existence that could learn to use magic. His other apprentice, Faye, already had a Vampiric apprentice and would've been unable to legally to take another.
Faelnirv liked the young vampire-alien hybrid well enough. He was quiet and a quick study, and his water magic fell in line quiet nicely with the High Lord's own tri-attunement of Water, Air, and Cosmic magic. He was enthusiastic about learning magic, too, which was a plus.
Which begged the question: where was he?

Another ten minutes passed before a loud meow signaled at least one of the people Faelnirv was waiting for. Lief, head and tail high, trotted into sight and meowed in greeting the High Lord as his owner tripped over his own feet, following after the black cat. "Ah! I'm sorry I'm so late, Lief broke my alarm clock last night and I forgot to set an alarm on my phone..." The young vampire ran a hand through his hair as he offered Faelnirv a silly grin. He certainly looked like he had just woken up, hair and clothes askew, one shoe untied. Shawn couldn't believe he was late. He loved his lessons with the High Lord, and he was excited to further his water magic, and perhaps see if he was talented enough to learn another element or two. He didn't think he was, but he was certainly eager to try. And Shawn wanted to learn everything about magic, even if it was something he himself couldn't practice; learning it may prove useful one day. "I'm ready to start when you are..." He smiled again, now starting to straighten his clothes and hair.

One of Faelnirv's eyebrows rose slightly when the black feline sauntered into his abode, leaning down slightly to run a hand gently across its back as its late owner stumbled in soon after. He listened patiently as his apprentice stuttered out his reason for being late, continuing to pet Lief soothingly. "I see.", he said slowly, "Tell me, though, for I am curious - Does your phone not also have an ability to make calls or send text messages?" The High Lord gave the young hybrid a pointed look, which eventually broke with a small chuckle and sigh.
"You may take a moment to compose yourself, young Shawn. We are in no hurry." Faelnirv said, motioning to one of the other seats in his living room with his free hand, the other running its fingers through the cat's fur in such a way a loud purr began to sound. He had always enjoyed cats - they were very similar to himself, afterall.

"I'm sorry... I was frantic earlier on my way here and panicking over how late I was, I forgot I could call to let you know..." Shawn offered the High Lord a goofy grin, his fangs peeking out. "It won't happen again."And this was probably the third time he was late, and the third time he said that. He cursed his desire to sit up late and read. Or, you know, sit in the bathroom and make as much noise as possible to annoy his siblings. Which was what he was doing the night before, attempting to irritate Liam enough to drag him out of bed so they could both aggravate their baby sister together. Or go out and party. Neither happened, unfortunately. Lief meowed at his owner impatiently, ears laying back despite his content purring int Faelnirv's lap. He wanted the lesson to begin and be over as quick as possible. As a cat, he had a natural disdain for water, and he was not a happy kitty when Shawn discovered that as an element he could use. It involved a lot of yelling from worried parents, yowling from Lief and crying from Shawn as his papa tended to his many cat scratches. Shay didn't seem happy with Lief and denied the cat bacon for a week. But that was way back when Shawn first discovered his talent. And there have been only two or seven more incidents in which Lief ended up soaking wet and Shawn was covered in angry red claw marks. "Okay, I think I look presentable now." Shawn straightened himself up and smiled.

Faelnirv hummed softly as his apprentice got himself presentable, stroking the feline that had sought to curl itself up in his lap. "Try to see to it that is does not, young Shawn. Even for a near immortal such as yourself, time should always be treated as precious." he said, locking eyes with the hybrid and inclining his head. He did not mind the previous times Shawn had been tardy to their lessons near as much as he made it seem, but he figured it was the best way to teach his apprentice to be more punctual for their meetings.
Gently nudging Lief off his lap, the High Lord stood and, with a flick of his wrist and a quickly muttered spell, set up his living room for the lesson ahead. Other previously dormant spells flared to life all around the room - ones for protection, for regeneration, for defense, etc. Catching his apprentice's expression, Faelnirv smiled faintly. "I can see your excitement, young Shawn. It is good that you look forward to actual practice. However, for your tardiness, we will have to review the basics of magic before we begin actual training."
Moving to face the young hybrid, Faelnirv summoned forth an image on a floating pseudo-blackboard. "You should recognize this 15-part diagram as the break down of this plane's magic system. There are technically only 4 magic languages in existence - Faerie, Elvish, Lycan, and Vampiric. The undead, too, can use magic - but it takes a serious toll on them and they can only use Dark magic.", he paused, pinning Shawn with a serious look, "I trust I do not have to remind you that while Vampires have the ability, with training, to attain Dark magic, it should never be attempted. Only the 4 Monarch Faeries are able to use the two taboo magics - Life and Dark."
Motioning to the chart once more, the High Lord continued. "Of the 4 races capable of using magic, the Fae are the only ones able to access the entire wheel. Elves come in a close second, being barred only from 6 magics - Lunar, Shadow, Night and their opposites Solar, Light, and Day." As he spoke, the various sections of the pie chart glowed brighter of faded. "Lycans are fourth with the four elemental magics being innate to their spieces - however, only a select group, such as the wolf tribe Zerhalians, can access these magics or even the language."
Faelnirv motioned for the young hybrid to come closer, finishing his short lecture. "Lastly, the Vampires. Normally, vampires are only able to access Night, Shadow, and Lunar magics. However, you and your elder Maahes Cast are among the very few able to attain elemental magic. While he has attuned to Fire, you have an obvious attachment to Water. And while both of you may one day have a chance to master another element or two, it is highly unlikely either of you will ever be able to do much more than simple spells with any element that is not your main one." he paused, "Do you have any questions?"Peter D Hook Not a problem dear! Holiday times are hectic! <3 Also, sorry this one is so long - I wanted to expand on the world's magic system for future reference and to make sure we're all on the same page! <3

"No sir, no questions." Shawn didn't mind the recap in the least. In fact, he liked reviewing the basics, because he always found it fascinating. The young vampire picked up Lief and thought for a moment. "Actually, yes. I know it's not likely I'll have the talent for other elements, but could I try learning one after I finish my training with water magic? I mean... I'm really interested in learning music magic... Would my kind be able to learn that or not likely?"He had a natural affinity for music, and he would often listen to classical music or some indie music to cover up the fact that he practiced water magic on his own, and behind his papa's back. and he often wondered if he could learn how to use music in a magical sense. ChibiWrites Sorry again ;; Shawn is a very lazy muse, it seems. He fell asleep on me |D Sorry if my replies end up slow ;; I appreciate it! It's very insightful <3

Faelnirv inclined his head as his young apprentice spoke, noting how the other had picked up his feline companion for support. He'd come to associate that behavior with apprehension on the hybrid's part, thought why the young one would be anxious was beyond the High Lord. Had he unintentionally given Shawn reason to fear his reproach? Surely the hybrid knew that Faelnirv had no dislike of honest questions. Ah, but that was a reflection for another time.
"I see no reason why I cannot attempt to teach you all the magics known to your race, young Shay, other elements included." the High Lord said, smiling a little. His expression turned solemn, however, with Shawn's next question. "I'm afraid your race has shown no affinity for magics other than its innate magics and the elements. I and many others have studied Vampires for centuries and found no other affiliated magics written in their language's glyphs.", he paused, taking note of the hybrid's expression, "... However, that does not mean they do not exist. If it would please you, I shall make a note to check when next young Faye and I journey to the Faerie Archives?"Peter D Hook Sorry this took so long! Work in pain, and that's a fact.

Shawn looked a bit dejected when his mentor revealed he was unlikely to learn anything outside of other elements, if he could even learn that. Sure, he felt a bit disappointed, but he was still grateful to learn magic at all. Lief looked up at his slave and meowed encouragingly. He believed in Shawn, if nothing else. And he knew Faelnirv could help the hybrid learn all he could, even if it was only another element. The offer of research made Shawn perk up nonetheless. "I'd appreciate it, but it's no big if you can't find anything." He offered his mentor a smile. "Are we going to continue recapping?"ChibiWrites Sorry that took so long! Pfft, as I was trying to reply, my roommate's cat thought my lap was the best place for her to be. xD

Faelnirv nodded to Shawn's statements, sighing softly. "Still, I will attempt to find out if there's even a possibility. Perhaps the younger generations have made more progress than we thought possible." He made a vague gesture with his hand, eyeing the duo.
At his apprentice's second question, the High Lord smiled. "We are done recapping, young Shawn, for the moment. Today, I will allow you to chose what you wish to learn." he said, waving an arm with a soft murmur - the chart disappearing and a new bulleted list appearing in its place.
• Shadow Manipulation • Water<-->Ice Cresting • Lunar Ray Condensing
"Think carefully about your choice, young Shawn, for this will shape your lessons for the next few meetings." the High Lord cautioned. "You will learn all of them in time, but do try to chose the one that sparks your interest." He smiled a small smile and allowed his apprentice time to consider.Peter D Hook Sorry this one's so short - I had to write a 10 page paper so I'm still sort of fried.

"The water and ice one. I want to stick with my main element for now... I'll branch out once I feel comfortable enough... If that's alright with you..." He shifted, ducking his head a bit to mumble behind Lief's head. The feline stared at Faelnirv and gave him an exasperated and very-done-with-Shawn's-uncertainty look. A tiny huff even accompanied this expression. Lief meowed at Shawn and wriggled in his arms, demanding his slave stop using him as a shield. Shawn looked at the squirming mass of furry liquid in his arms and he put Lief down by his feet. "Sorry, Lief..." He gave his companion an apologetic smile, rubbing the back of his neck before he looked back up at his mentor. ChibiWrites Holy crap, I am so sorry this took forever. I had this open for like a month and Shawn was being stubborn |D How are youuuu?

The High Lord inclined his head, huffing out an amused sigh at his apprentice's behavior. That Tomas and Shay had produced an offspring that was so docile and insecure was beyond him. Perhaps it was the destiny of the middle child between to far more extroverted siblings to become more mellowed and subdued? "When dealing with magic, it is always best to err on the side of caution." he said, giving the hybrid an approving smile. Though, perhaps the smile was more of an answer to the black feline's plight.
"There is a bowl of rather nice fish from lunch in the kitchen. I enjoyed the meal, but do please help yourself to it." he said to his apprentice's familiar, waving a hand toward the aforementioned room in his abode. He looked at his apprentice then, tilting his head a tad. "Do you require nourishment, as well? Remember: as we progress to higher level spells, the after effects will cause your hunger to increase. Such is the nature of your magic." he cautioned.Peter D Hook Pfft, it's all good dear. I've been struggling with Liam's muse for another RP so I know the feeling! I'm well - on Spring Break actually. How are you?

Lief's ears perked at the mention of food, delicious fish!, and as soon as the High Lord granted permission for said tasty fish to be eaten, Leif made way for the kitchen, tail raised and clearly on a mission to harass anyone that might be in there to feed him. Shawn watched his companion trot off, leaving him alone with his mentor, who he returned his attention to. "I'm not hungry right now, no... So we can practice a little and then I could eat before I head home?" He smiled at Faelnirv and straightened up.

The High Lord glanced after the departing feline, glad not only that he could provide him food but also that it would get him out of the room when they would be using Water magic. (While he could fix most everything with magic, Faelnirv was fond of this shirt and did not wish to see it ripped to shreds by a disgruntled familiar). He tilted his head toward the young hybrid, acknowledging his choice. "Very well, young Shawn. Though do know, should I sense even the slightest lapse, we will discontinue the lesson for the rest of the day." he said, calmly motioning for the board to clear and reset with various glyphs in both the Faerie and Vampiric languages. His apprentice was by now very aware how much Faelnirv was wary of Vampires casting, as well as intimately knowledgeable on how it affected their thirst.
"As you well know, I cannot use your Vampiric glyphs to cast magic - just as you cannot use any other language to tap into your magic. However, Faeries are privileged enough to have a nearly complete language, and thus I can use glyphs to mimic your language's." Faelnirv glanced away from the board, pleased that his apprentice was watching with rapt attention. "You should also remember that while some more experienced casters can merely speak the glyphs to cast, you will be drawing the glyphs as you say them." He chuckled at the young hybrid's expression. "Try not to look so grim, my young apprentice. Your elder Maahes did much the same for many years before dear Faye let him start casting linguistically. It's for your safety as much as it is for learning purposes."Peter D Hook Writing how our magic system works has always been a challenge. Bear with me while I remember how?

Shawn nodded and tried to look a little more confident, determined. He could do this. Well, he could at least do a little. Glyph practice was good. And maybe in a few more lessons he could cast something verbally. Okay, not likely, but the boy could dream. "Then let's begin before Lief gets back and decides that he wants to be in the way." He laughed softly, taking a breath to relax.
