Biroki, the gangly preteen nephew of Ast's main healer, was lonely. No surprises there, he had friends but his shyness kept them somewhat apart. His stammer didn't help, nor did his new feelings towards the ladies of the tribe. He'd always thought they were pretty, but now... something was different. His heart raced and his palms sweat and he would get all kinds of inspired to write things that he was sure nobody else wanted to hear.

So, he was lonely. So, he was shy. And, just then, he was bored, since he had no errands to do and the rains were very heavy today so he couldn't explore outside of the town. At least that meant that there was no risk of him accidentally setting anything on fire... a small blessing.

He sighed and looked up at the dripping leaves and sky above him in the sub-canopy, hoping he could get that magic under control. The rain was beautiful, rivulets of liquid crystal pattering softly against leaves and bark and his skin. That was nice, at least. Many things were...

Just not his stammer, or his shyness, or his awkward body. Nothing was perfect...

"B-b-but Daddy! I d-don't w-want to stay out h-here. C-can't I come in with you?" Finnley begged her father who gave her a stern look. "Finn, dear, you know I won't let you. Don't worry, Ast is safe. I'll only be a little bit. Your siblings and mother are around here somewhere, why don't you go find them? I'll be back." And he went into the small hut on the ground.

It was always this way, every time Finnley came with her dad to sell some of his sculptures. He didn't want her to have to worry about any money or see her father have to haggle for prices to get the money they needed. So, of course, Finnley had to wait every time. Most times she'd go with her mother but lately she'd been sort of a Daddy's girl and did everything with him.

Finnley walked around in a circle for a little bit outside as she waited. Her footsteps making the circle in the soft mud from the rain. Her pig tails were soaked and sticking to her neck. Wondering what kind of shapes she could make in the mud, she began walking in random shapes repeatedly to make the sunken in shapes she had the first time unintentionally.

Hearing voices beneath his perch, Biroki looked down – down, down, and down – to the understory. There was a girl, a Shifter like him, walking in the mud. She didn't seem to be going anyplace, just walking, and it was enough to draw his attention and interest. A lot of things were.

Expertly, he slid and clambered to a lower branch, trying to figure out what the girl was doing, and if there was a purpose to it. Her walking seemed random, but the look on her shining face told him otherwise: she was doing this on purpose, towards some end.

He stared intently, crouching on his low-boughed perch, and then blinked. ”You're making shapes!” he blurted out, surprised and delighted at the thought.

It wasn't that she was really concentrated on her task, but more of in a daze as she let her feet make the shapes. What the end product would be Finnley didn't know. She had a sense of creativity from her father so she wasn't really sure what it was going to look like but it would be something.

That was when she heard the voice from above that caused her to step outside the square she was making with a gasp. "Oh! I-I'm s-sorry. I d-didn't know there w-was anybody th-there." Her face began to heat with a blush as she stood still in the mud, the one foot outside the square began sinking down. "D-do you w-want t-to help me?" She offered the shifter boy in the trees. Finnley shifted her weight from foot to foot in all her nervousness.

”S-sorry!” he replied in kind, frantic. He'd upset her with his rudeness, and that was not good, and now her shape wasn't... the same. ”I should have... been a little louder. Then you'd have known I was here...” he swallowed. Maybe he should leave...

But, when she invited him to help her, he realized that that was the better option. Yes! Fix what he had screwed up. That was the perfect way to make amends. ”Oh! Yes! Sure! Of course!” he babbled, sliding down the tree with complicated grace and landing – not nearly as gracefully – on the muddy ground with a plop.

He trudged through the mud to her. ”I'm... M-my name is... That is...” he fidgeted as he approached. From the ground, she was pretty... so pretty.

”I'm Biroki.”

Finnley couldn't help but giggle a little bit as he slid down the tree and landed with a plop. "It's o-okay. Y-you didn't mean any h-harm by it." She smoothed back a piece of hair that had fallen out of her pig tails and tucked it behind her ear. Finnley happily began where her foot had stepped off. "I'm Fin-Finnley." She said hesitantly. Biroki was a nice name. "S-so just like um. Walk and make sh-shapes. It doesn't m-matter what they look like." She told him. Finnley wondered what kind of shapes would he make? Would they be made of straight lines or would they be all curvey? Finn liked to mix the two as she thought doing straight lines got boring after awhile. "So Biroki, d-doo..do you like trees?" She said lamely as she tried to get a conversation topic.

Oh. Good. He hadn't ruined her shapes, and she wasn't angry at him. Still, he had made her ruin her circle, so the least he could do was start walking to fix it. He started to walk in a curving shape – if it wasn't a circle, it could be something else, something like a bug, perhaps.

”Trees?” he exclaimed, startled. He'd never been asked such a question before. Trees were everywhere – what did it matter if he liked them or not? ”Yes?” he said, questioningly. ”Um...” he looked at her nervously, ”D-do you?”

Another small giggle escaped her and she tried to hide it and the slight blush that was appearing with her hands. Finn had just asked a very silly question and she knew it. "Well...I...I do. B-but I was asking because y-you were up in them. I d-don't really go up in the trees th-that much... She said shyly. Finnley had never had the talent for running along the branches which had surprised her parents. It was something they were working on with her. She had to wonder how weird the boy thought she was for asking that.

”Oh. Right. Yes.” he said awkwardly, ”Um... Y-yes I do. I like trees. I like flowers too, and bugs, and stars, and the way that...” he bit his lip to shut himself up. Babbling... again. He did that all the time around girls, and it was upsetting because they usually laughed at him. He was wordy. He was silly. And he stammered. ”Um...” he shifted uneasily, trying to put all his focus on the mud shape beneath him. ”Why is it?” he blurted out suddenly, looking up at her. He frowned, shocked at his own forwardness. He covered his mouth with a hand and looked away. ”I... n-nevermind.” he said, wishing he could shrink into a shell like a pillbug. ”I was just...” and now he couldn't let it go, ”Wondering why you d-don't go in the trees so much.”

The trees, he knew, were the home of shifters, and he had been raised just beneath the canopy with it's vast sky. She was a shifter. Was she raised on the ground, maybe? That was very dangerous. He allowed himself to stare at her again, but looked away.

She was very pretty.

The young shifter giggled slightly at his babbling, but more in a shy way and never would it be in any way malicious coming from Finn. Flowers and stars were good too. Maybe not bugs so much...but she was sure Biroki had some reason why he liked them. It only made sense right? Otherwise, why would you like bugs? Creepy and crawly. Finn supposed they had their uses for things but if she could help it, she'd avoid them as much as possible. She paused in her walking at his question, her big toe digging a hole in the mud as she thought. "When I was younger. I...I wasn't th-the most...graceful. I f-fell...a l-lot. So my p-parents th-thought it would be b-better if I just...didn't." Finnley looked away sheepishly. It was truely tragic, a shifter who couldn't run through the trees like the rest of her kin. Perhaps now that she was older she should try again! She did have a lot more balance than she used to...

Where do you want to go with this? And what future RP do you want to do? I'm so excited about this...

”Oh.”

Biroki, to his credit, managed not to laugh, though her giggling at the things he liked was a little off-putting to him. ”Th-that makes a lot of sense. You sh-shouldn't run around in the trees if you're- if you're gonna fall. It's not s-safe.” he managed, ”F-falling is bad.”

He stopped when she did, unconsciously digging with his toe, just as she did. If he moved again, he might mess up some new pattern she wanted to make and he'd be self conscious about it, especially since he'd been the one to screw it up.

"Do you... I c-can show you a few tricks..." he offered hesitantly, "For climbing. I can show you a few climbing tricks."

The boy's kindness granted him a hesitant smile and Finn was about to accept his offer when she noticed a figure come out of a nearby building. "It..was nice to m-meet you...Biroki. That's my daddy so I have to go. B-Bye." Finnley really did wish she could stay to talk but Daddy wanted to go home so home they would go. However, she wished she would get to meet him again someday.

Yes

”Oh...” Biroki frowned. He didn't want her to go yet, not when the conversation had been going so well. But he couldn't just ask her to stay – the very thought made him tense up, from his guts to his cheeks.

Instead, he waved as she left, feeling a not unfamiliar sense of loss. The pretty girls always left him, after all...
