Ceres closed her eyes, smiling as the breeze caressed her face and sent her long curtains of hair to swirling around her petite frame in a crazy dance. Her wings fluttered excitedly, as the strange smells and sounds engulfed her senses, leaving her breathless.

After a few moments she opened her eyes again, the huge dune before them seemed so tall after the flat plains she and Galious had been traversing. The pair had come here with a purpose but she couldn't help but feel lighthearted at finally reaching their destination. The strange mare who had told them of the treasure that was buried here, something that would help her reclaim her home, so she could go back to her valley. The map she had drawn for them was even now tucked into a pocket shaped fold of cloth in her sash. Ceres pushed away the small doubts in the back of her mind, whispering that she didn't necessarily want to be alone and confined anymore, that she felt more alive than even before. Ceres didn't realize it but she was stronger, her slender legs now rippled with lean muscle whenever she moved, her eyes almost always sparkled, she seemed to glow with happiness and the thrill of discovery despite what had once seemed horrific circumstances.

Her large purple eyes turned to gaze at Galious, feeling suddenly frisky, she winked at him and flounced up the dune, the sand giving way under her hooves as she slipped and hopped higher and higher, laughing at the ridiculousness of it all. "This is harder than it looks, I assure you!" she called down to him with a coy smile.

All trace of merriment vanished and was replaced with awe as she reached the crest of the sandy dune and looked down at the vast body of water stretched out before her as far as the eye could see. The long grass around her bent and swayed in time with the wind, tickling her sides and belly but the mare barely noticed. The waves breaking against the rocks sent up a spray of water into the air and very nearly took her breath away with the majesty of it, terrifying and beautiful, then. Ceres leaned foreword, trying to see more and let out a strangled "Eeep!" as the sand beneath her feet shifted, taking the small mare with it. She leaned backward, trying to slow her uncontrolled descent, sand flying up around her like twin wings, terror gripped her heart but it was for naught. She landed at the bottom of the dune with a dull thwump in a disordered pile of gauze cloth, tangled hair, and limbs, half buried in the sand that cascaded down behind her and dazed she spat out grit and grimaced.

"Not fun!" She huffed snippily.

Days had flown by since they'd left the familiar paths and hidden thickets that had made up Galious' home and despite the great distance away from his familiar haunts, he didn't regret his decision to leave with the strange, slightly mysterious violet haired mare by his side. There were good days and bad days of course, wouldn't be living if there weren't ups and downs. He liked to think that the ups vastly outweighed the downs.

They met all sorts of strange and interesting folk, some helpful and kind, some not so much. Some with information that lead nowhere, and some that lead...well it lead somewhere, whether or not that somewhere was useful or beneficial to them was up for debate. This was one of those somewhere's. There was rumor, legend, old mare's tail, of a weapon of power buried somewhere in these dunes. Whether or not it was true...well that was yet to be seen. He hoped so...not that he was in any real hurry to see Ceres go, but for her sake...she deserved to be happy after all...

He glanced over at his traveling companion, the time spent traveling had been good to her: toned muscles, brightened eyes, and a definite spring to her step. He felt proud to be her companion, and grinned when she winked at him. He bowed his head towards the dune of sand and motioned her ahead.

"After you, Mi'lady." he said and then watched her scramble up the sand. He chuckled to himself quietly as she called back down to him, and started up himself. He'd been hoping his splayed hooves would be of some help, but while they were ideal for scrambling over rough terrain broken up by roots and pebbly stream bottoms...sand was indeed a very different beast.

"You're right!" he grunted as he tried not to slide back to far with each little hop that took him just a smidgen higher. He shook himself as he finally reached the top with her and gazed out at the ocean. It was bigger, bluer, and...just...more everything than he'd ever imagined. He watched the waves crash into the shore and the little stallion suddenly felt smaller than ever, in a way he didn't mind for once. "Incredible." he breathed.

He turned as Ceres let out a cry and started tumbling down the other side of the dune. "Ceres!" he started down himself after her and ended up sliding along more than anything. Once down he managed to squash the desire to laugh at the mess of cloth, hair, and limbs that the mare had become.

"Are you alright?" he asked, amusement still sparkling his voice, but definitely restrained. He made his way over shaking sand off his little tail and gently nosing her, checking for injury.

The big kalona mare winged her way a little higher. She'd been scavenging the coast the last few months, having tired of hunting in the high mountains. One could stand goat for so long after all, and while hunting the plains would have been acceptable...Tizona had wanted the biggest change of scenery possible, so the coast it had been. Besides the hunting was much more interesting, catching fish, seals, and even sharks on the occasion from the air was the kind of challenge she'd craved.

She stretched her wings further and veered back towards the shoreline. She'd spent most of the day hunting open water, and while she wasn't that tired, it was probably high time to land and give her wings a rest, not to mention satisfy her thirst. If there was one downside to ocean hunting, it was the salt content. She couldn't say she was that big a fan of sand either...it got everywhere...she snorted and glanced down as she approached the shore.

Empty...not that she'd expected much of anything else. This entire stretch of beach was pretty devoid of life, one of the reasons, Tizona had picked it. It meant she didn't have to deal with unwanted guests, those that would compete with her for food and otherwise. She let out a contented kind of sigh as she surveyed the empty expanse, and altered her course slightly towards one of the fresh water streams that emerged from a small wooded area and trickled down towards the ocean.

It was then that something purple and bright green caught her eye. Not the normal colors that usually populated her hunting grounds. She frowned and adjusted her altitude and spiraled down towards the ground, but corrected just enough so that she wouldn't be noticed by the land bound individuals below. They didn't look too threatening...a mass of purple mane and tail on the one and...hmm...antlers...definitely a stallion for the other...but definitely not full sized...usida of some sort...well that would be easy enough to deal with...maybe even have a bit of fun with. It had been awhile since she'd had a toy of some sort.

Not now though, she was thirsty and wanted to wash blood off her chest and muzzle. While it would probably make the little ones wet themselves, it was starting to get sticky, and would attract flies, and Tizona hated insects crawling all over her face. She noted the location of the little ponies and then caught a thermal to gain altitude again and headed for the stream. She also glanced out towards the water and frowned at the clouds piling up on the horizon. Storm moving in...well would be good cover for terrorizing the little ones later, but first things first. Mare had to have her priorities after all~.

Ceres' face mantled with color as she stood, shaking the loose sand from her body and sputtering to get the grit off of her tongue. Once she had recovered enough to realize she was making Galious worry she smiled warmly at him and nosed him back playfully. "I'm fine, nothing hurt, besides my pride of course." A little quiver in her belly, and then she was laughing, "It was sort of fun, actually."

She nudged him towards the water, still laughing as she skipped off, each little hop extended as her wings fluttered instinctively, holding her aloft a few extra moments. She paused at the shore, sniffing the salt laced air appreciatively and smiling, the tide rolled in and tugged at her hooves playfully and wetting the tips of her long mane. "Oh dear," she sighed, glancing regretfully down as the curls loosened from the water and frizzed. Well, no matter, she wouldn't be vain enough to stay out of the glorious ocean just to smooth her vanity, she wasn't proud of it, but everyone had some little vice. She let her gaze trail out over the vast expanse of frothing waves, the lighter blue sky, the... churning black clouds gathering slightly to the west. A fist clenched in her stomach as the wind picked up, "Galious... Is that... Normal weather for these parts?" She asked in a small voice.

He let out a sigh of relief when it appeared that everything was alright with Ceres and she's suffered no injury from her fall. He allowed himself now to chuckle and shake his head in amusment, sand dislodging from his braid. "It was fun wasn't it." he said remarking on his own haphazard journey down the dune. "As long as you're alright, that's all that matters." he said.

He followed her towards the water, pausing every now and then to watch the sand blow across the dunes, or listen to a bird. He'd never heard any of these particular calls before and he wondered if he'd be able to mimic them with any accuracy. He also nipped at the dune grass and promptly spit it out. It was far to salty to eat. It would seem they'd have to back track inland in order to forage for food.

When he finally did make next to Ceres at the edge of the surf he was just as enthralled as she was. He leaned just a touch towards her, shoulders just barely touching as he looked out, it was truly awe inspiring.

Her question snapped him out of his admiration though. "Hmm?" he looked out in the direction she was and frowned. "Honestly, I haven't a clue...but that does look rather nasty...would seem a squall is coming in." he shook his head and looked around. "We'd best find somewhere to shelter for the night before the rain starts." he said.

Squinting her large eyes, Ceres peered up the coastline, trying to see some place where they could find shelter, there was nothing anywhere close, in the distance she could just make out a jumble of large boulders that looked somewhat promising.

The wind was picking up, whipping sand up into their faces and tugging at Ceres' hair. She lowered her face, trying to shield her eyes.
"Over there," she called out over the wind, "We might be able to find cave, or at least take shelter behind one of those big rocks."

The clouds continued to roll across the sky, swiftly encroaching upon and then blotting out the sunlight, the beach was suddenly as dark as night, the only illumination coming from the delicate fingers of lightning that sizzled and danced above them, thankfully none had struck, but the mare was sure it was only a matter of time. She danced back away from the roiling edge of the water, pushing Galious back as well. "Come on!" She began to trot in the direction of the rocks, the sand seemed to suck at her dainty hooves, she slipped and lost her footing more than once, the going was slow, added to that she could barely see a foot in front of her, what with the sand, the darkness, and her own traitorous mane whipping up to blind her at the most inopportune moments. Every so often, she glanced behind her to make sure Galious was still near, if anything happened to him, she would never forgive herself, he never would have left the safety of his homestead if she hadn't come along. She had never really thought about how much the stallion had left to come to her aide, he never seemed to mind and followed her with a simple devotion that bespoke volumes of his character and kindness. Had she ever even thanked him? Ceres resolved to set things right the moment they were safe, she would make sure he knew how much he meant to her. He was the only person in the world she knew she could trust without reservation, her heart thrummed with a new realization, warming her even as the sky above broke and icy rain stabbed into her like daggers.

Cold, exhausted, and sore, Ceres finally reached the boulders, she was surprised she had even managed to find them in all this mess. She ducked down underneath a crude lean too made by two boulders that were leaning against each other, making room for Galious to crawl in beside her, she turned to smile her relief at their safety and was shocked and horrified to see that he was not behind her. He was nowhere in sight, she tore back out of the shelter, wailing his name and struggling to see, she charged back the way she had come, following her footsteps, but a few yards away, even her own prints had been blown away.

"Galious!!!" She cried, heartbroken and terrified.

Galious spotted the boulders she wanted to use for shelter. He frowned slightly. In truth he would prefer to go back and shelter in the trees that were just a short way inland, but that would mean scrambling back over the dunes, an activity that would probably take more time than running for the rocks would. Not to mention more exhausting.

He picked up the pace and followed as closely as he could, hoping she was right and there would be a hallow they could hide in. He also sent up a small silent prayer that whatever little nook they did find wouldn't end up flooded either from the tide or the rain. He wasn't much of a swimmer, and if things got bad they could easily be swept out to sea and drowned in the storm.

The wind tugged at his mane and strands of it came loose from his braid and tangled in his antlers. He knew he'd end up quite the sight at this rate, but as long as they managed to stay safe for the night, anything could be tolerated.

He tried to keep Ceres in sight, but as the clouds rolled in and the darkness covered the beach, her dark mass of purple hair made her nearly invisible. It was only catching glimpses of her pale body that let him know he was moving in something that resembled the right direction, but a gust of wind picked up and threw sand into his eyes and caused him to recoil in pain.

"Ceres!" he tried to call out, but even as her name escaped his lips, he felt his cry torn away by the wind. It would be a miracle if she heard him at this rate.

He blinked and tossed his head, clearing his eyes, but now was completely disoriented. "Ceres!?" he tried calling out again, hoping for a crash of lightening to point him in the right direction, but the rain was now coming down in a stinging torrent and blinding him as much as the sand had before.

"Ceres!" he cried one last time before picking a direction and plunging headlong in it. Right or wrong it didn't matter now, he just needed to get out of the weather, he could always find her in the morning once the storm passed. She'd been in the right direction, she'd find somewhere safe, ride out the storm, she'd be frightened of course, who wouldn't be? He'd always tired to tell her though in so many ways that he'd always come for her.

Another crash of thunder and flash of lightening and Galious saw he was heading for the dunes...well that was fine, maybe he could find a hallow and hunker down in that for the night. Anything was better at this point than being in the open. He was nearly at the bottom when another flash illuminated the top of the dunes and he saw her.

A big mare, huge leathery wings flared out to her sides, Her spade tail lashing in the air. She was like something from a nightmare. Another flash of light and he locked eyes with her, his entire body trembling in fear. The big mare gave a screech, a hunting cry it sounded like...even the wind with all it's might couldn't hide that sound, and he knew what she was hunting...him.

Even in that moment though, his thoughts weren't for his own safety...but for Ceres'. No matter what, he wouldn't allow this monster to get near her. Confident in his resolve, he turned in the furthest direction from where he figured the rocks were where she'd be hopefully be hiding and ran as fast his his legs would carry him. He thought he heard the mare say something, but the wind carried away her words. Not that he needed any encouragement to run.

Tizona spent what little time there was between spotting the little pair of intruders and the storm rolling in, cleaning herself up. She felt much happier once clean and her thirst sated. She'd even taken a little time grooming herself to make sure she was at her best for later. Even with a storm rolling in, she wanted to make sure everything was just so with her appearance. She could be quite vain when she wanted to be, and spent nearly an hour on the feathers of her wings. Granted, she probably wouldn't be able to fly in the storm...unless it was surprisingly mild, but those clouds didn't seem the "light rain" type so she'd have to do her terrorizing the old fashioned way, on the ground.

She looked out to sea as the wind picked up and the air grew heavy with the scent of rain. The charged sensation that came with thunder and lightening danced all around her, and she smiled just a bit to herself as she shivered in anticipation.

She studied the skyline, watching to see how quickly the clouds were rolling in. Once it was dark, she'd be at as much of a disadvantage as her prey would be. Well maybe not quite, they were both very pale creatures, while she was darker in coloration. If the lightening didn't ruin her night vision too much, she figured she'd be able to keep them in sight better than they would be able to keep track of her.

Satisfied on that front she frowned slightly and looked around her copse of trees. Not an ideal holding place...but it would have to do on such short notice. It was fairly open and nothing she couldn't plow through if she had too. Yes, she'd be able to probably keep one of the little pests contained here on her own. Not both though...but she only needed one...to start with. Maybe once the one was worn down enough she'd go find the other and bring it to the party.

The sound of thunder brought her back to the present, her mind having wandered off to all the wonderfully delightful things she was going to do her new toy. The clouds were nearly upon her, and she couldn't linger any longer. She moved out from under the trees and stretched out her wings, while she shouldn't try to fly in this mess, it would be the quickest way back to where the little ones were. She took a deep breath and launched herself into the air, fighting hard to keep aloft. She corrected herself several times finally catching a break and making some headway in the direction she actually desired to go.

The clouds however moved in faster that she expected and the entire land disappeared beneath her. She hissed, but an instant later resisted the urge to whoop, as she saw two light gray masses moving beneath her. Those had to be the usida. She battled it out with the wind and watched seeing what they did and couldn't believe her luck when one of them became separated from the other.

This was her chance and she headed for where the last flash of light told her where the dunes were and landed, granted a little roughly, but not so bad as to have caused herself injury. She managed to crest the dune as the little figure reached the bottom, the male obviously as she saw the antlers, and was very satisfied at his reaction to seeing her.

She milked it for all it was worth and let out a cry announcing to the world that she'd found prey, and smirked as the fled from the dunes and in the direction she actually wanted him to go. "Run all you might~! Nothing will save you though~!" she called out after him then took her time picking her way down the hill and started after him.

Ceres' ears strained, she could have sworn she heard Galious call her name but perhaps that was simply her imagination playing tricks on her. She continued to call for him until she was hoarse, she couldn't even hear her own voice above the roar of the storm, couldn't see, the wind seemed to tear the breath from her lungs leaving her dizzy and exhausted, finally she collapsed in a patch of wet sand, tears streaming from her eyes. He was here somewhere, she reassured herself, just because they had been separated didn't mean he was hurt. He was probably safely hidden away while she was foolishly running around like a maniac in this mess.

No.

Galious would be looking for her too, her heart wrenched with worry. She had to keep going, a strange roar filled her ears, it was not the wind, it vaguely reminded her of the rumbling crash of thunder. Ceres glanced over her shoulder just in time to see the wave that crashed over her, sending her tumbling with its' weight up the shore and then sucking her back with the unrelenting force of its' undertow, she held her breath as she tossed and turned with the water's roiling movement. The moment she was still, she opened her eyes, trying to see which way was the surface, but everything was greys and blacks. Feeling hopeless, Ceres started to kick, trying to ignore the burning of her lungs as they cried out for oxygen. Another big wave sent her tumbling again, this time into a huge rock protruding from the surf. Pain blossomed on her shoulder, but she wedged herself against it, using it as a guide back to the surface. Her head broke free of the water and she gasped, trying to see where she was. At that moment, lightning lit the whole beach and Ceres could see the entire length of it, there she could just make out a small figure, "Galious!" she tried to cry out, but all that emerged was a breathless squeak. She was so happy to see him alive and well that it was a moment before she noticed that he was backing away from something, a large winged figure loomed closer, predatory anticipation clear in every line of its' body. Ceres struggled but she was already exhausted from her battle with both the storm and the ocean. She wasn't terribly far from sure but she was afraid if she left her rock, she would drown. Torn with indecision, her violet eyes remained helplessly locked on the scene unfolding on the shore.

Galious tore down the beach, his braid utterly destroyed and his mane streaming in the wind, lashing him in the face. He tried to shake it from his face, as he ran but stumbled a few times and decided to give up and let it be.

He didn't need any help on the stumbling department. The huge mare would use her wings to nudge him and sometimes n** at his rump. He'd go head over heels into the sand and have to regain his feet, only to get bowled over again.

He was a shaking mess when he finally hit the trees. He was panting, exhausted, shaking and blood was slowly oozing down his back legs. He wanted to collapse but he needed a hiding spot. He could hear the kalona coming...or maybe it was his imagination. It didn't matter. He limped towards a low thicket and used his antlers to make a hole and crawl inside. He winced as he realized he was in a thorn bush, but that had it's benefits. The mare would have as many issues getting in as he'd have getting out.

He peeked out and watched as she stalked into the stand of trees and looked around. Her nostrils flared, she could smell the blood. He cowered as far back in the thicket as he could and waited, praying she'd go away, but it was unlikely. She had his scent, it would take a miracle for her to loose it, and he was trapped in a thorn bush.

At least Ceres was safe. Please let her be safe...

Tizona whooped as she followed the little stallion down the beach, reaching out a wing to toss him head over heels again. This was the most fun she'd had in ages. Would be better if she could harass him from the air, but this was almost as good.

She leaned forward and nipped at him again. She got blood this time against her tongue, hot, salty and yet sweet all at the same time. The bloodlust was singing in her ears, louder than the howl of the storm. Oh, what a sweet little morsel he was.

She backed off just a bit, letting him get ahead. Let him think he got away as they approached the grove were she'd planned to keep him corralled. She took her sweet time, even though the storm raged around her and the rain stung her sides and wings.

She watched forks of lightening dance along the surface of the ocean and then turned back towards the grove. She'd given him enough time. He'd probably found a hiding place by now, meager though it would be. She took a deep breath and sauntered in under the trees. The rain now an inconvenience instead of a nuisance. She tossed wet mane out of her eyes and stalked into the little clearing.

"Come out, come out where ever you are~" she called in a playful voice, taking deep breaths. She had his scent, the tang of blood, the smell of wet pony, but where could he be? Her eyes gazed over the area as lightening lit up the sky again. Ah, there in the thorn bush. Not a bad hiding place, but he was essentially trapped in there now. No way in, no way out.

She smirked and took another deep breath and moved to walk around the bush. "Hello, little one~" she said, carefully using her tail to poke at the bush. "We're going to have lots of fun~" she cooed. "Won't you come out and play~?" she laughed throatily and backed off and stood in front of the opening the stallion had made. She could wait. He'd have to come out at some point after all.

Tears streamed down Ceres' face, the only source of heat on her frigid body as she watched Galious flee. It had been this way in her home when the evil soquili had stolen it from her, she was small and alone, forced to run and hide. Only now this nasty mare was bound and determined to take Galious' life from him, not just his home. Her eyes were locked on where her friend was hidden, Ceres couldn't sit idly by while he was in danger. She couldn't ive with it if anything happened to him. Shivering with the cold and with fear, Ceres pushed away from the rock, forcing her numb legs to churn through the water, plowing towards the shore as fast as she could go. She coughed and sputtered as the waves broke over her head, getting up her nose and in her mouth, she was careful not to breathe in, but it was hard when she was so tired she was gasping with every movement.

It seemed to take ages, if she thought back on it she wasn't really sure how she had managed to reach the beach so quickly. She was not a strong swimmer, even in calm water, and she had been exhausted long before she had been swept out to sea. By rights she should have drowned, but Ceres wasn't one to question what she could only assume was a gift from the gods. She nearly sobbed her relief when her small hooves touched the bottom. She limped from the water, her long hair dragging behind her in a sodden, tangled mess. She didn't know what she thought she could do, more than likely she would end up dying too, but she couldn't let that mare find Galious. She had to save him.

Summoning what little strength remained, Ceres began galloping full out towards the stand of trees where the Kalona was circling a thorny bush. No, no, no, no, she chanted mentally as she ran. The mare poked the bush with her tail, Ceres was happy that Galious had found a good hiding spot. If not, she likely would have arrived too late to do anything.

Ceres skidded to a halt a few yards away, she hadn't noticed before now but the storm was dying down. The sky was still churning, but winds had died down for the most part and the rain had slowed to a lazy drizzle. The world was still an eerie greenish grey that made this entire encounter seem almost like a terrible nightmare.
"Hey!" she called out, without really settling on any sort of plan. She gulped, cursing herself, the mare was huge, did she intend to fight her? She could hardly run, she was still out of breath and wobbly. But a strange new courage had gripped her, laced with a furious outrage at this bully, at all bullies who picked on people who had done them no harm. She sampled this new emotion and found it flooded her limbs with a new energy, short lived, but good enough for her purposes.

She pawed the sand as she had seen others do, her breath coming faster still, but now out of anger rather exhaustion.
"Leave him ALONE, you big bully!" she cried out, "Or I'll, or I'll...I'll...."

.... What would she do?

"Or they'll be consequences!" She finished strongly. There! Let her imagine the worst.

Tizona turned at the challenge, though it could hardly be called that. Not with a voice that was as sweet and little as that one was. It had to be the mare with the mass of lilac hair. She exhaled lazily and took a moment to stretch and roll her shoulders, letting the move extend all the way down to the tips of her wings and tail. She gave an extra flick of her spade like tail and slowly turned.

She did have to give the little mare credit, in the bad light she did look like some sort of wraith, but little was still little, and Tizona was twice her size if not more. She gave her a smirk and slowly flared her wings out. When it came to looking like something out of a nightmare, Tizona had no intentions of losing.

"Or you'll what, Little Mare~?" she hissed lowering her head just slightly, knowing her breath smelled of blood and death. "Get very angry and stomp your pretty little hooves until I leave your boyfriend alone?" she asked voice dripping with sarcasm as she raised the pitch of her voice a bit and batted her eyelashes. Granted in the bad light it was hard to see, but it was the thought that counted.

"He's mine now, Little Mare. My little toy, to do with as I please." her tail lashed a bit behind her and her eyes lit up. "Unless you want to be my toy too?" she asked voice now laced with malice. "It will be such a challenge for me to keep up with two...but I can manage." she said with a chuckle.

It was then she felt something sting her back legs, enough to draw blood. She gave a screech and spun, the little stallion had gotten the gall to try and gore her with his antlers. She heard him cry something to the mare as he ducked back into the thicket as furiously tried to get at him.
PostPosted: Sat Apr 18, 2015 5:46 pm

Galious cowered and tried not to flinch as the Kalona's tail darted in and out of the bush. He couldn't help it though as her tail came through just to his side and he involuntarily jerked into the thorns, pricking several new holes into his shoulder. He hissed and tried to settle. He was safe...it would take her some time to tear apart the bush enough to actually get at him, especially if she was limited to her tail.

He tried to calm his ragged breathing, slow his heart rate. He was bleeding from several nips to his haunches and the thorns had torn several gashes in his sides. They all burned like fire and he desperately wanted to just sink into a cool stream and let the water take away the pain, but that was impossible. He swallowed hard and tried not to think about his injuries, or the possibility of his impending doom.

At least Ceres was safe...that was all that mattered. She was safe, and the Kalona wouldn't get her. He wondered what she'd do when it became apparent he wouldn't be coming back. Would she think he abandoned her? That depressed him, but he hoped with all his heart she'd carry on and reclaim her home. Someone would help her...he was just sorry he wouldn't get to see it.

Her voice though cut through his thoughts. His eyes snapped open and he peered through the hole in the bush. He could barely see her outline in between the big mare's legs. What was she doing her!? And was she really trying to threaten the predator! His heart skipped a beat, what a mare, but this was beyond folly! He had to save her! He couldn't allow the Kalona to hurt her.

He couldn't do much in his current condition, but he could at least distract the mare and let Ceres get away before...he didn't want to think about it. He took a deep breath and lunged through the hole with his antlers taking all the branches in front of him with them and straight into the big mare's hindquarters.

"Run Ceres!" he cried as he made contact and quickly retreated back into the bush.

Ceres steeled herself, despite the fact that her small body was shaking like a leaf she narrowed her eyes, gritted her teeth, and wrinkled her brow. Her hooves planted firmly, she would not run and leave Galious to this mare, to this end. She didn't know what she could do to help the situation but he wouldn't be alone. Each of them was barely half the size of this Kalona on their own, but perhaps together they would manage better.

"Or.... " She winced as she trailed off, holding her breath against the stench of the mare's breath. She shrank back from her words until the last bit, at which her eyes flashed with sudden unabated fury. "He belongs to no one but himself." Ceres snapped. She was trying to formulate a response to the Kalona's preposterous and disgusting invitation when Ceres suddenly glimpsed a flash of green and gold behind the mare. Galious had gored the mare with his antlers and then darted back into the bush, his bravery gave her a burst of courage. It also helped that the Kalona was no longer bearing down upon her with the full force of her intimidating presence.

Ceres shook her head at Galious' plea, "No!" she cried, "I'm not leaving without you!" Taking advantage of the mare's distraction, Ceres whirled around, her long wet mane flaring out in a bright banner as she placed her full weight upon her forelegs, coiled up her hindleg muscles like a spring and kicked out with all of her strength straight at the Kalona's knees, hoping to make her stumble at the least and praying she would fall away from the bush so Galious could make good his escape.

"Come on!" She called desperately, her eyes whirling around as they searched for some place that would be safe to run. They were near the edge of the beach now, Galious had ended up in one of many scruffy patches of brush that led over to what looked like a forest less than a mile away. If they could make it over there, they might be able to lose the Kalona in the trees, perhaps those large wings would hamper her in close quarters. Ceres wondered how well Kalona's sense of smell was, she guessed it was quite good. She wanted to escape into the forest with Galious and find a good hiding spot, but it wouldn't do any good if they were both trapped later on.

Her eyes swept the rest of the beach, there was no where else they could go, the rocks they had aimed for earlier were much too far and the Kalona could surely track them there, the rest of the beach was bare. Ceres was much too worn out to run much longer, fear and desperation were the only things giving her strength enough to stand right now. It had to be the forest. She seemed to recall someone mentioning in passing that mud foiled scent trackers. It had just rained, there should be mud aplenty if they could get off the beach. They could cover themselves in it with enough of a head start and find a good place to hide until the Kalona gave up the chase. Ceres nodded to herself, mind made up, and returned her full attention to the scene before her, her plans had taken no more than a few heartbeats, she craned her neck trying to see if Galious was coming or if she had to kick the mare again. Ceres couldn't see anything in the poor light, so for good measure she kicked out again. "Galious, come on, come on, come on, we have to go NOW!!" she pleaded at the top of her voice.
