Rayolun sat on a branch in the canopy, watching and listening to the rain fall. It was rather quiet in the jungle today; he couldn't hear much other than the soft gentle sounds of rain through the leaves. Rownin lay curled up next to him, taking a nap since Rayolun wasn't moving anymore.

It'd been three months now since the Obans had been defeated and Rayolun had returned to find his wife's home empty.Three months of constant searching for a trace, venturing into cities and towns that he had avoided before, and not a sign.

The hope he'd been carrying all this time was dying; he knew the jungle and knew that Lasarra was no lone hunter and survivor that he was. No matter how skilled a tamer, he knew she wouldn't have survived this long without a single trace.

He stared out at the rain, feeling empty. Where would he go from here? All the plans he'd had with Lasarra just.. washed away like a flooding river. All gone...

All around him the the animals slept through the gentle early morning rain, leaving him alone with his thoughts.

this can occur where ever in Jauhur you need it! I'm setting this up to be the start of his recovering from grief/coming to terms with it :3

Chalcedony was on a walk, a peaceful one in fact, with his shield on his back instead of in his arms, when the rains had come. It wasn't too much of a surprise though, the weather in Jauhar was often damp, something he'd had to reaquiant himself with after leaving Tale. He'd been there long enough for his own liking and was more then happy enough to get back to Jauhar and away from the 'arrow slinging idiot' that he had never really gotten along with. The man was the sort that Chal didn't mind as an ally in a battle, like that against the Obans, but when it came to day to day things the man grated on him in so many ways. With the battle over though he wouldn't have to deal with him, not unless he was going to visit his sons or their mother. The fact that the mother was his sons was the sister of that idiot sure made things complicated at times.

As the rain started to come down a bit heaver Chalcedony lifted a hand to shield his eyes from it, giving a soft sigh, before he moved in closer to the center of the tree whose branches he was walking on. Closer in he'd be able to avoid more of the rain, though he supposed given that he was already soak it probably shouldn't matter. What did matter though was the fact that the branches were starting to get slick, best that he was more careful. It would be kind of sad if he were to surived a war, up to and including be taken captive by the enemy, only to slip and fall to his death due to a rain soaked tree branch.

After a bit of thought, as well as a bit of watching the rain falling before him, he gave a thoughtful sound. Probably best that he stopped now he thought to himself. The rain was too heavy, the branches too slick, and it wasn't as though he were in a rush to get anywhere. That thought in mind he shrugged out of his shield, resting it against the middle section of the tree, before he set to squeezing the water from his hair. This was where he'd wait it out he thought to himself as he looked out over the forest of Jauhar, taking in the sounds of the rain on the leaves. It was as he was doing this that he spotted something interesting, the fact that he wasn't alone. Turning his attention to the other man he found himself studying him, head tilting to one side, hey... wait, he knew that guy.

Interesting, to think he might actually cross paths with him again he thought to himself, debating if he should approach. The man seemed to be lost in thought, making Chalcedony question if he should bother him, he'd wait, see if the other man spotted him, and how he reacted. If he gave no hint of being interested in conversation then Chalcedony would leave him be and wait for the rains to pass, if he did otherwise then he'd approach. Having someone to chat with while waiting for the rain to end would be nice but he wasn't the sort to force his company on another.

Rayoluns trance was broken when he heard someone moving about nearby. He didn't want to move, didn't really want to do anything; but this was the jungle and it could be a predator. He turned to look and spotted Chalcedony watching him. It took a moment, but he recalled the man; he was the broad one from the prisoners camp; the one who bashed down the pen door rather impressively.

Rayolun's last three months had been spent mostly alone except for Rownin and he was finding that being alone wasn't something he wanted anymore... Before Lasarra he'd been content with his solitary hunter's life, but after meeting her and his 'brother' he was discovering he couldn't return to that lifestyle anymore. It was this loneliness that prompted him to motion silently to a spot next to him in the nice dry spot he'd claimed, an offer if other wanted to join him. he was feeling that perhaps he needed company to get out of this depressing hole he was in.

Chalcedony saw the motion forward and took the invitation, glad to have the company on a day like this one. Reaching back he scooped up his shield, carrying it easily along with him, and upon reaching the other man's side he set it out of the way. Once it was propped up in a manner that would keep it from falling out of the tree he settled down alongside his fellow Shifter, "It's been a while. I'm glad to see you made it through that whole mess." He said, giving the other man a smile before looking out across the thick forest before them, watching the rain once more.

It had been some time since he'd last seen the other man, not since they had split up, heading in different directions. Chalcedony had left with one of the Oban women, to find Senja and another prisoner that had been with her, while his current companion had escaped in another direction. From there things had only gotten more complicated as they got back to camp, though barely, and then were attacked by the Oban forces. It was over now though, not something they had to worry about save for maybe some strangler that didn't want to give up the fight even though their side had lost. He didn't suspect that all of the Obans would be so easily pursuaded to behave but he'd yet to come across any that wanted to pick a fight, something he was grateful for.

He wasn't sure about everyone else that had to deal with the war but Chalcedony was happy to be done with all of it. Here was to hoping no other new force would appear to bother them.

Rayolun gave a sad smile. "I suppose... though the same cannot be said for.. others.." Like Lasarra... Though she'd escaped the war and the bandits, he knew the jungle had claimed her in the end.

"I never did get to know your name? I'm Rayolun."
He had made it through the war... but the worst part was only to return to his new home to find war had found it...

Rownin perked up at the sound of another's voice and trotted over to sniff at the newcomer, small stubby tail wagging curiously.

Chalcedony nodded his head, not sure exactly who he meant but he could tell that someone he knew had been lost just by that sad smile on his lips, "The war claimed too many lives." He said, feeling that Obans had been let off far too lightly after what they had done but there was no real reason to voice his opinion on that matter. It was up to the elders what would happen to the Obans and everyone else could only go along with it. Not as though he meant to go making friends with their aggressors from the South any time soon, but he wouldn't actively hunt them down or anything, "I hope that the peace holds, people deserve time to recover." Both physically and mentally.

Turning to him he gave a smile, "Rayolun, my name is Chalcedony, or just Chal." It was nice to finally get to truly meet the man who had aided in their escape, having looked after the others while Chal went in to fetch some of the others who had been dragged deeper into the Oban camp. Everyone who had been a part of that escape, he'd like to meet all of them, see how they were doing, but for the time being he just wanted to relax and stick to Jauhar for a bit.

Turning his attention to Rownin as the creature approached him he gave a smile, "Ah, my son Aysun would likely enjoy meeting you, he's a big fan of creatures like you... and well, every other variety under the sun and moon." Chandra likely less so, he seemed content with his one sprite whereas Aysun seemed to want an entire zoo of his own, something that his mother frowned upon but Chal didn't mind so long as he took care of them.

Too many lives, Rayolun thought, and some were lost after it was ended. Disgusting slavers who refused to honor the treaty. "I doubt it will hold for ling," He said as his eyes narrowed in anger. "Not with the way I saw some Obans behaving in the jungle...." There were quite a few skeletons of Obans now, being eaten by the jungle now after Rayolun had passed them by and seen that some Obans refused to stay out of Shifter lands and act peacefully.

His anger drained away again, it was just too hard to keep it up these days. He just wanted to rest and grieve for now. Blood could come later.

"Rownin is a roati... from Zena I believe. I found him washed up along the shore of Jauhur." He gave a small smile as Rownin decided this Chal was a nice person and proceeded to pounce on Chal's hand and wash it clean. Then he looked up and gave a demanding bark. He cleaned this new one, so new one had to give him pets!

"You have a son? How old?" Lucky b*****d....

Chalcedony turned to look over at him as Rayolun said that he didn't think that the peace would hold for long and it was something that made the older Shifter give a soft sigh, "I would rather it did, I can't say that I care for the Obans and their methods but a bit of peace would be nice, to allow people to recover from everything that they have been through thus far. It's exhausting, being at war for so long." He said, giving a bit of a sighing sound. He didn't care to go into a battle again, especially of one of such a large scale nature. If the only fighting he had to do for the time being was the sort that went along with hunting food for his family he would be a happy man.

"Raoti? Something from Zena? Yeah, Aysun would love him. He keeps going on about how he wants to go to Zena to get himself something called a 'Raptrix' but we hadn't the change with everything else that had been going on before now." He said, wondering if that meant that now that the war was over that he was going to be dragged off to Zena. He sighed a little, "Can't say I have the best memories of that place." It was something he muttered half to himself.

Shaking that thought off he said, "Yes, two actually, twins named Chandra and Aysun." He chuckled as he thought about it and added, "Their actually teenagers now, it's hard to believe, they grew up so fast. They should be at a point soon where they will be getting weapons and ranks from the elders." His eyes went a little wide as though he were just now realizing that fact, something that shocked him a bit just thinking about it.

Rownin, after walking all over Chal's legs decided this lap was not the one he wanted to take a nap in and returned to curl up in Rayolun's lap. Ray ran a hand over the roati's unrurly curls as he answered Chal. "I've never been there... never really gone outside of Jauhur. Never had a need to until the war."

Which had utterly ruined so many lives. But also did some good, he reminded himself. While he had lost Lasarra (perhaps) due to it, the Matori had been freed and the Oban's at least halted for now.

"A family sounds... nice." He said sadly, "Watching your children grow up...Having a home..." He looked out into the rain and sighed. He shouldn't begrudge another his enjoyment simply because his life had gotten screwed up. The sharp pain in his chest was back again, the aching hole that made him want to just go vanish into the jungle and hide. Except the jungle would remind him of the happy times....

"How do you cope with loss? Does the ... pain ever go away?" He asked with a pained expression as he looked over at Chalcedony. It was an open honest question; he didn't know how to cope with loss. He'd been alone for so long except for his uncle that dealing with emotions was... not something he'd ever had to do. Perhaps this one who had a family would know.. At least know more than he did... not a hard thing to do after all!

Chal gave the raoti a last pat on the head before the creature returned to its master, so very like the creatures that traveled with his son. Sure, they'd associate with others but it was Aysun that they loved, Aysun that they would always return to. It was a good thing for his son, to have such fast friends he thought to himself before he said, "It feels like ages ago that I went. The elders of our tribe, along with those from the Chibale Isles and Tale, all decided to head off East at the same time, we all ended up stuck together for a rather awkward hike first to Sauti and then to Zena, meeting with the people in both places." He explained, still recalling parts of the tribe quite vividly, while other parts were more hazy given how long ago that had been.

"Better that I go with him to Zena then him get it in his head that he wants to visit Oba or something as foolish as all of that though." He decided, sure that he'd rather bring Aysun to Zena then let him anywhere near the Oban's homeland. He didn't trust the lot of them anywhere near his kid.

At the mention of a family sounding nice Chalcedony gave a nod of his head, "Our family is a bit of an odd one but still a good one, one I was only too happy to go to war to protect. I saw what they did to Neued, I couldn't let them get their grasping hands on any other unsuspecting villages." He said, more then happy that he'd been able to help with the halt of the Oban advance. They'd gotten further then he'd like and he could only hope the majority of them would buzz off now that they'd been beat.

Turning slowly toward Rayolun at his question he seemed to consider it for a moment before he finally said, "I can't say it something that one can get over all that easily. I know I still sort of wince from time to time when I see my first love, off in Tale married to an arrogant b*****d that I can't stand." He said, nose wrinkling a little at the thought of Jacinthus, "The pain of loss eases but I don't think it ever goes away, it's a bit like a scar in a way, just one that can't be seen, only felt."

"I fought at Neued for much the same reason; guess we shifters are just in the area where fights happen. First Alkidikes and now Obans... At least the Alkidikes never tried to enslave us."
Think of this loss like a scar? Like the other wounds he'd received? Rayolun ran a hand through his hair; that would be difficult. Physical pain he could deal with, this though? But Chal had loss someone (even if it wasn't to death apparently) so he must know what he was talking about...

"But since you have a family you found another love? Did that help?" Would finding more friends and family help fill the hole? That made some sense...

"That is at least one thing that can be said for the Alkidike, the second thing being that they actually showed up to help when they could very well have stuck to their islands to wait to strike after the battle with the Oban army." Without their aid the allied army could have been weak enough after the battle that the warrior women could have struck them while they were down. The fact that they hadn't done that was a nice change of pace for those women to actually help them out despite them never really seeing eye to eye with the Shifters. It could very well be a pride thing though, them not wanting to appear as carrion eaters come to pick the bones or something along those lines? Who knew how their minds worked.

"Hm?" Chalcedony turned to look over at Rayolun, his eyes going a little wide, before he lifted a hand to scratch it against the back of his head, laughing as he did so, "Ahh... well, not exactly. Keilana, she's a good woman, I care for her, she's the mother of my children after all but... what brought us together was mutual despression, alchohol, and a whole lot of stupidity." He explained to his fellow Shifter, "So she isn't exactly my new love, though she is a good friend. I will admit it did help some, boy having her around as well as our sons, though she didn't exactly fill the same spot in my heart as Takoda."

Rayolun gave Chalcedony a slightly amused look. "That sounds... interesting." Drunken night out ehh? Sounds like something Gerraden would do.... And ... Takoda? Sounded like a male name.... must prefer men to women... Not that that bothered him; he was fairly certain his uncle was like that and he'd walked in on a few male couples in the jungle on accident before.

"So... finding some.. task to do should... help? I just... feel that if I continue searching for her it will just.. never heal." Rayolun was certain that if he stayed for too much longer in the jungles endlessly searching for a woman who was dead... he'd probably spend the rest of his life sad and lonely and that was not something he wanted. He'd been raised to be practical' that death came to all... it just hadn't been personal before. He'd never really set himself goals before. Always it'd just been a wander about and live or, more recently, go help the war and return to Lasarra.

Chal couldn't help but laugh, "That's not even the most interesting part." He told Rayolun, "Not even nearly so." Just thinking about what the 'most interesting part' was had him giving a bit of a chuckle. Oh but things had been made to be so complicated by that one drunken night he thought to himself. Complicated, but worth it, he did love his sons after all even if they didn't come into the world in the manner that he might have dreamed about when he was much younger. He had been thinking perhaps romance, true love, all of that sort of stuff... most certainly not how it had come about, not that he could think of anyone who dreamed about getting a stranger pregnant whilst drunk. At least nobody he knew of.

"I have found that keeping ones self busy is a good way to go about healing or at least striving for it. Training, patrolling, dealing with my sons, chatting with various people I run across, more training, then volunterring first to fight in the war then again to let myself get captured so I could get into the Oban camp. I have done a little of everything and I feel I am starting to get closer to what I am striving for." He explained, then gave Rayolun and asked, "Do you want to talk about her? The one that you are searching for I mean, somethings talking can help too."

At least that was something he'd heard, talking with others about Takoda, even talking to Takoda about it, that wasn't something Chal had ever done. No, instead keeping it all to himself so as not to bother those around him. Giving Rayolun a smile he said, "I don't mind listening if you want to talk. We might be strangers but we went through something together that few others had to deal with amongst our people." That meant something, at least in Chal's mind.

Tasks... he could keep himself busy for a while, but he'd been doing that. Searching in the jungle for months.... and it still hurt. Talking now... would that help? Rayolun had never been one for heart to heart talks. But... it was worth a try.

He ran his hand rhythmically through Rownin's fur as he stared out at the rain pouring down. He was silent for a while as he gathered his thoughts...When he spoke his voice was soft, sad.

"I left her a week before Neued fell... went to the beach to get some gear I'd left behind... Last time I saw her was at her home in Ast. Then Neued fell and I got caught up there.... By the time I returned to Ast..." His throat constricted and he had to take a deep breath. "A group of Obans.... bandits or a group who had yet to learn of the wars end had attacked and half burned Ast... I couldn't find any bodies so I cahsed after the Obans. Killed them all too...." He paused again and looked down at Rownin. He did not regret killing those men, now when they had taken the animals and had Matori slaves. No he did not regret that...

"She wasn't there... Wasn't anywhere... I checked from Neued to Ast, ran over all the grounds she could have hidden in but....The jungle swallowed her." His voice was hoarse and he gave a harsh chuckle that held no laughter in it. "All right after I'd proposed..." he half whispered as he held back tears.
