IC

Though the war was over and the fighting had stopped, the healers still had their work cut out for them. Many were injured during the fighting and while those with minor wounds had been healed and left, those with much more severe injuries were still bedridden and waiting on treatment that needed tending to multiple times a day. Magic could only do so much, and physical healing played a large role.

It wasn't long before the other healers realized just how tired and haggard looking Makani had become. It was hard for them to recall a time that Makani wasn't working on the wounded and they decided that an intervention had to be done. Without hesitation they were at Makani's side, practically forcing him to rest. The injured would still be there when he returned they told him, and they didn't want to see him back for three days, if he even chose to come back at all they said. They would take care of his portion of wounded until then.

Quest Tasks
||. This quest is to give Makani a chance to express his thoughts on life after the war.
||. What Makani chooses to use his time on is up to him. He can sleep, rest, travel, sink into deep thoughts, fret, etc.
||. At some point, Makani should indicate what he plans to do after the sick are cared for. Is he returning to the troupe, and where do they intend to go?
||. At the end of the three days, Makani should make a choice whether to return to healing, or leave it up to the others to continue on. The quest grading will not be effected either way.

Part One: Ejected from the Healer's Tents

Makani found himself standing outside the healer's tent, a look of surprise on his face, his hazy eyes rather wide, "Ahh... huh?" Well now, that was unexpected he thought to himself as he stood there, trying to wrap his mind around what had happened. He'd been... banned? Could a person be banned from healing patients that were in need of such things? He knew that there were a lot of other healers, he wasn't the only one by any stretch of the imagination, but still, he had wanted to help. He couldn't though, not for three days, instead he was told to go and do anything but healing. What should he do though? The first thing that came to mind, of course, was the idea of a nap.

He'd actually been considering that... well, for what felt like ages, but it had also felt a bit like a waste. He couldn't waste time with a nap when there were people in need after all. Now that he was banned from the healer's tent though, with no hopes of returning for at least three days, didn't that mean that he could get a nap? Alright, so nap first and then, well, he supposed that he'd figure it out after right? He would pet anything that he would be able to sleep for at least a day to make up for all of the sleep that he had been missing out on of late. He couldn't recall the last time that he'd slept for a long period of time, or even the last time that he'd slept somewhere other then a cot in the back of the healer's tent. He'd wanted to be nearby in case he or his powers were needed by anyone.

Starting forward he headed for where the rest of the troupe were staying. If he went there he would be able to lay his head down and nap for a while, sleeping tended to help, making time seem to go by a lot faster. Time going by faster meant that he would be able to get back to work that much faster too, right? Something that had his worries easing off a bit.

As he approached where the troupe, or at least for the moment their things, were tucked away he gave a little sigh. Here he'd thought that maybe one of them might be around. It had him wondering what they were up to, out entertaining like their job descriptions entailed, perhaps? How envious was he? He'd kind of like an easier job, though it wasn't something he could consider, not yet, not where there were still wounded to be cared for. Were he to just abandoned his position as a healer, what would he do? It felt... wrong, as though in doing so he'd be seen as lazy or heartless. He had power, therefore he should use it, right? At least that's how he felt, but he'd been at it so long since he'd put himself to work alongside the other healers that it was no wonder that he'd been made to take a vacation.

After making his way carefully through the things that belonged to the various members of the troupe, careful not to knock anything over for fear that it might belong to his sister, he plopped down on one of the cots provided to them. He lay for a moment on his back, hands resting on his chest, fingers laced together, and he did his best to take in deep, calming breaths, trying to will himself to sleep. It was more difficult then he'd first thought it would be though. He would start to doze before his mind started to nag at him. Had he seen to a certain patient's wounds before he'd been sent away, had he told the others about another patient and how they couldn't take a certain herb due to it making her break in a rash, would they remember to send someone else to get fresh water in his stead? All things that seemed to come to mind the moment he was nearly on the verge of sleep.

On top of those sorts of nagging thoughts there were also the voices of the others around in the area, as well as various ambient noises, that went along with being in a camp full of so many people. Every time he heard something he jerked away, as if expecting danger... and each time he had to remind himself that things were over. There would be no more attacks, no more Oban invasions, things were... peaceful, or at least as peaceful as the world got. It meant that it should be alright for him to sleep, right? He wouldn't need to worry about another flood of patients coming in with dire wounds given to them in battle, all that there were to tend to were those who weren't ready to go home yet, those with wounds that had confined them to bed.

Things were looking up of late, therefore it should be fine that he wasn't allowed back to the healing tents for a while, not as though the whole of the land would fall apart if he were to take a nap after all.

Part Two: Down Time with Rae

Makani had slept for what felt to him like ages, especially after having gone so long only sleeping in short bursts so that he could keep up with all the work that he'd taken on. The moment that he really started to focus on what was going on around him, the sounds and scents, as well as the continued warmth of the weather, he knew that he hadn't been sleeping 'forever'. In fact he had a feeling that it was the same day and he'd maybe gotten a few hours of sleep at best. Not exactly three days worth of sleeping to pass the time but at least he felt refreshed he thought to himself.

As he sat up up, swinging his feet over the edge of the cot, they came to rest on something big, warm, and furry, something that had him freezing in place for a moment, a bit startled. His mind went racing over the possibilities of what he'd put his feet down on before he came to realize whose energy it was that he was sensing. A smile appearing on his lips he said in an embarrassed and apologetic tone, "Ah, Rae? Is that you? Oh geez, I'm sorry! I didn't mean to squish you, girl." He said, shifting himself so that he was sitting cross legged on the cot instead, hands reaching out for the big raptrix that stood up, seeking his touch. He gave a soft sighing sound, petting her, scratching her behind the ears, then leaned forward to rest his head against hers, "So you were here while I slept? You're such a good girl, I do apologize for not being able to play with you much lately, Rae."

How long had it been since he'd just been able to go for a walk with her? He'd found her as a pup, grew up with her really, she'd acted as his bodyguard and his eyes for the longest time, and of late he'd been able to do only a little with her. He felt guilty about that, knowing that in trying to help his patients that he'd neglected her. He spent most of his time in the healing tents or making runs to get fresh water, when he did have some down time he was either sneaking in naps or he was helping Sin'qua with her magical studies. He'd been spread thin for some time and the one to suffer seemed to be those who he cared about most. Giving a smile he said, "If you can get back pack for me I can see about brushing you if you'd like? We should probably move though, don't want to get a bunch of dog hair all over Eira's things." His sister would likely flip out if that happened.

As he moved to get himself to his feet he could hear Rae moving around, sniffing through the bags, until she found the one that belonged to Makani. He heard her taking hold of it in her mouth before waiting on him to get to his feet and he walked over to where she was waiting for him, "Alright, let's find a nice place to sit." He said, allowing her to lead the way, one hand resting on her neck in a manner that allowed her to lead the way. It took a bit of walking but they were able to find a place to sit that didn't have a lot of people around, as well as had a nice, fallen over tree for him sit on, "Good find, Rae, you're such a smart girl." He said as he settled down, digging around through his pack, getting out a pair of brushes. One of them, his own brush, was set aside for now, and the other he used to get Rae's fur under control. He wasn't sure how many times he had to run the brush over her, and how much excess hair he'd removed, but he had a feeling that it was almost enough to make a second raptrix.

"This weather sure is good for making you shed, huh?" He murmured when he was finally able to take a break, more then certain that he was covered in dog fur himself. He didn't mind so much though, not when he could tell by the way she was jumping around that she felt better now that she was rid of all the shed fur. She probably felt a lot lighter and far less itchy he thought to himself with a bit of a smile.

After a moment longer of listening to her bouncing around he said, "Alright, my turn I guess." He said, setting her brush aside, picked up his own, and set to brushing his hair out. It was a nice, calming thing, to brush his own hair, one of few things Eira helped him with, but since she was probably busy he'd tend to the task himself. He had a feeling that his sister had far nicer hair then he did, she took better care of it, styled it, put little fiddly bits in it that chimed when she walked, all manner of things that made her stand out. Even someone like him, who couldn't really see everything she did, could still sense it. It made him wonder if he should do the same, should he bother to do more with his hair then brush it out and then tie it back? Not as though he were a fancy member of the troupe or anything, he didn't exactly have a real place yet, just ideas for a 'blind mage act' as Eira had put it.

At first it wasn't something he really thought too much on. He didn't want his magic used in a such a flashy manner after all. It made it seem as though he had no respect for the power or the man who had been kind enough to aid him in the beginning. Now he didn't think he'd mind too much being a part of the troupe, doing little tricks with his powers, because it meant that he wasn't using it to cause any harm to anyone or anything. He had a feeling he wouldn't be able to go the rest of his life without any sort of fighting, the world was a dangerous place even with the Obans out of the picture, but if he could avoid battle for a while that would make him happy. Just doing some tricks, being the 'blind magician' for Eira's troupe, as well as a bit of side healing for them, it wouldn't be so bad. Vastly superior to dealing with war times, that much was for sure. All he knew for certain was that he was kind of... burnt out. Ever since the troupe had come to help out he felt he'd been up to his elbows in blood. Not the fault of his patients, they were just trying to defend their homes, but even unable to see what he was dealing with he could still hear it, smell it, sense it. It wasn't what he wanted to do anymore.

After his hair was brushed out, and Makani noted that he needed a bath as soon as he could find himself one, he tied his long tresses back once more, making sure that they wouldn't get in the way. Once he'd put the brushes away in his pack he called to Rae, "Come on, girl, let's see if we can't figure out where Eira and the others are, I would like to chat with them again. Save for Sin'qua I don't think I've gotten to talk to anyone for an extended period of time." And even then he felt as though all he'd talked with Sin'qua about was magic, the two of them going over the tomes that Makani had, with Sin'qua reading out loud for them, practicing said magic, then he was back to the healing tents for more work. Surely using these three days to reconnect wasn't a bad way to spend the time? Especially now that he'd gotten some sleep and had some time to think.

Makani picked up his pack this time, slinging it over his shoulder, before he put one hand one Rae's neck, "Find the others, Rae, I think that it's time we go and chat with them for a while." More then a while, three whole days he'd been banned from doing anything in the healing tents, which meant three days to catch up with them and figure out what it was that they were doing next. He had to admit, now that the war was over and the patients that needed taken care of was starting to minimize, he wondered what was going to come next. He knew full well that the one that he needed to ask would be the one in charge of the troupe, that being Eira. As such he felt now was the time to find his sister and chat with her about the next step their small troupe would be taking.

Part Three: What Comes Next

Makani had to admit the time that he'd spent with his sister and the troupe had been quite refreshing. There was Borra and his antics, the way the man seemed so innocent despite everything that he must have seen, Gyuri and the manner in which the man watched over everyone in a silent but protective way, and then there was Eira and Sin'qua often arguing over things but in a manner he knew wasn't really hostile. These were the people that he'd been apart from for what felt like forever as he'd thrown himself headlong into the work that went along with being a healer. The job had been something that was satisfying, but now that things were starting to wrap up, with more and more patients having left the tents each day, he felt that he should likely be thinking more on them. Where they would be going next, what they would be doing, and asking about those that Eira was planning to bring along with them.

He knew that she had recruited Viveka, wanting another pretty face to draw in crowds, and that she wanted Natsu as well for his voice, but he hadn't really known if the pair would be joining them or not when they left this area. His sister had seemed convinced that all she had to do was catch up with the pair and she'd be able to convince them to come along with the troupe. Even more people around, it would be lively, though he did have to ask if they would need more people Gyuri soon. He cared for those in the group but if they took on Viveka and Natsu that meant that there would be two more people, people who couldn't battle, that Gyuri would need to tend to. He wondered if Sin'qua would be one of those guardians, was that why she wanted so badly to learn magic? It made sense he supposed, her wanting to be able to be more then another magic act. She didn't seem like the sort that wanted a bunch of people watching her, that was more something for Eira and Borra to do.

It made him wonder though, would he be required to fight as well? He might opt out, he'd been in the middle of a fight once already and it wasn't something he wanted to be a part of again... though he supposed little scuffles between the troupe and outsiders might be something that could be ended with intimidation. Rowdy audience members were most certainly not Obans or giant monsters after all. Summoning up a ball of flame into his hand might be a good enough deterrent for most, that much he supposed he was willing to do, especially if it meant helping those in the troupe that he so cared about. What was more intimidating then magical threats coming from a blind guy after all? It was a shame he wouldn't be able to see the looks on such people's faces but he supposed he'd still be able to sense their reactions.

Giving a soft chuckle as he walk he nearly stumbled when Rae bumped into him, seeming as though she was curious as to the joke that she'd missed. Reaching out he set to scratching her behind the ears, "It's nothing, Rae, just thinking about something." He told her, giving her a smile and some more petting as they walked toward their destination.

During his time off he'd been able to chat with his sister a bit during the time that he'd had off, learning where they were heading next, that being Sauti first, then Zena to visit home and recruit, and back again as she meant to set up a base of operations in Sauti. He hadn't heard of her new plan, the one in which she wanted to set up a place, an inn of sorts, where travelers could come to see their act, as well as rest up for a while. A place where there would be no weapons allowed inside, one had to check them at the door, and no fighting inside unless they wanted to get thrown bodily out the front door by Gyuri. It was something that he knew would be completely possibly given the size of the man, throwing a person out a door should be a cake walk for him. It was something that sounded good to him, it was offering a safe place, as well as entertainment, to travelers, something that would be welcome for those who had a long way to go.

Giving a bit of a smile he continued onwards with Rae on their walk toward the healer's tents. It had been days since he'd been here, days spent with his family and friends, figuring out where they were heading next, what they were planning, and how he'd fit into it. For the longest time he hadn't really thought too hard about it, about where he'd fit in or what he'd be doing, all that he'd focused on was the patients, feeling as though he had to do everything himself. He had the power so he had to use it, at least that was how it felt to him, even during the battle he'd used his magic to break up little scuffles between people on their side who didn't seem to get along like Ruelash, then using his power to heal during the fight against the Obans that he'd gotten caught up. He tended to throw himself into anything he felt that he should be doing, wanting to help, but he knew now he'd been steadily burning himself out.

The rest had been good for him, the time with his family as well, it all gave him perspective in a way. He wanted to help still, of course, but only until Eira and the troupe were packed up and ready to go. She had a bit more she wanted to do she'd say, like catching up with Viveka and Natsu, meaning he had a bit more time. He'd see to the patients until his sister came calling, but for shorter shifts. He felt that those in charge would probably understand, they had been understanding enough when it came to doing what was best for him after all, even if he had been a bit on the shocked side to begin with. As they reached the tents he patted Rae on the neck, "You have to wait outside, alright? I will bring you in later if I can to visit with the patients, I am sure you will brighten their day being as sweet as you are." After giving her a few more scratches behind the ears he headed inside.

He would seek out the one in charge, chat with her a bit, and let her know about what he planned to do. He felt that, so long as he didn't spend the time between now and when the troupe left working that he'd probably be allowed to come back to work. He had just had to see about manage his time better, make sure to take breaks and sleep more, go for walks with Rae, and have Eira or Sin'qua keep him up to date with the troupe's preparations. He would help out with in the healer's tents for now, but he was actually looking forward to moving on now that he knew where they were going and what they were doing next. It would give him something to think about during his down time other then the urgent need to get back to his patients, yet another thing that would be good for him.

He wasn't in a rush to get away from healing per say but knowing what was coming next did make him eager to start out. There was a lot for the troupe, Makani included, to do soon that had no bearings on the war, it was something he looked forward to as the war had been a terrifying thing, one that he was glad was done with, and moving away from the scene of the battles would be good for everyone in the troupe that had been involved, not just Makani. Soon they would be back to what they were meant to be doing, according to his sister at least, and he was eager to see that through, in a manner of speaking.
