Quote:
It was hot, sunny day out with only the barest of breezes coming off the water. It was the first really good beach day she'd had in awhile, and so America Jones had decided to take full advantage. Wearing over-sized sunglasses and a teenie bikini, the girl had come equipped with blanket, a full picnic lunch, a case of Corona, a pulpy paperback, Cosmo, and her phone fully charged and ready to take cute selfies with.

Instead of lounging luxuriously, though, America was on her stomach, feet kicked up, and drawing with Crayolas like she was all of eight years old. The quality of her artwork, sadly, was not the sort of thing even a third grader would take pride in. In the picture was a a redheaded stick figure in a pirate hat, obviously a woman due to the large and unevenly sized circles at its chest, and next to her was something resembling a monkey with a crown. They were sailing in a poorly drawn boat across a scribbled sea.

Glancing up, she noticed a tentacle waving distantly in the actual sea, and gave a small wave back and then flipped it off. America had a theory that most of the things with tentacles in the water spoke some sort of sign language, and that the bulk of what they were saying was along the lines of Show us your tits!

She did lament about the fact she couldn't jet off to the Caribbean anymore, well, on a whim, anyways. She then remembered though, that this island was indeed located in the Caribbean...but in the Bermuda Triangle on this island didn't constitute as a good time in her books. To think when she built up more leave, she'd only go to the nearest island outside the triangle. It'd feel like a world away though, and it'd be most welcome.

Claude sighed, and unwound her arms. She was done staring out at the water from one of her favorite spots on the beach after a tentacle broke the serenity and small illusion of normalcy. The trainee turned, and then paused as she caught sight of a red head on the beach as well, and she blinked once before she stared. Was she...having herself a beach party...here? Gray eyes rolled towards the tentacle again, and then she just summed it up to it being Deus.

She didn't care to interact with other people. Especially after that last time she did the crazy tweaked out librarian almost held her books hostage and threatened her, but the other just looked so...dare she say, almost at home there. Confidence attracted confidence, she supposed.

"You're not worried it's going to snatch you right off your blanket?"

Turning her head at the voice, America looked up and up and up at the woman. With a grin, she drawled, "Naw, I'm the baddest fish in the sea, honey. They know I'd ******** 'em up if they got fresh."

Putting down her marker, the girl sat up and held out a hand, "Name's America Jones."

"Ah. Well, here's to hoping they wouldn't ******** you because you're fresh." She dipped her head after the sentiment, since she didn't have a glass to hold up to it. America Jones...People and their naming...Once again, Claude debated whether to shake hands, and decided to go ahead for the heck of it.

A hand decked out with rings reached down to take the girl's own, and she gave it one firm shake before letting go. "Claude." She straightened back up, and crossed her arms. "You always come out here to work on your tan?" She asked idly, but also thought maybe it was to get some art time in, as she eyed the crayons and markers.

Sitting up fully, America gestured at the empty lounge chair, offering Claude the seat of she cared to take it. "I got a house with a nice yard in the back, n' I usually take my bit of sun there." With a big stretch, the girl dug her feet into the sand and then flopped down on her back, "But sometimes a girl's gotta have a beach day. Speaking of, weren't you the one who kicked the s**t out of Cee not too far from here?"

There wasn't any accusation in the statement, just idle curiosity.

Claude glanced at the offered chair, but chose to remain standing for now. Couldn't get too friendly or comfortable just yet...if ever. A brow rose. "A house, huh?" So then...she must have been a full hunter, from what she was gathering about rank around here. Damn. That seemed nice, being away from the dorms and having your own space and bathroom.

She was snapped out of her thoughts but the mention of Cee, and though America's tone wasn't accusing, Claude's eyes narrowed a fraction in wariness. "Yeah. I did." There was no boasting, just simple acknowledgment to the question, followed by a pause.

"Not going to get in line to beat my a** too, are you?" The intermediates were annoying enough...she really didn't want to deal with a full hunter now too.

With a quiet snort, America shook her head, "Not unless you're up to getting some training in, hun. That's the only sorta sparring I like to do with weapons out."

Without getting up, America stretched her hand out to the case of beer and was sadly about three feet short of actually reaching it. "Could you hand me another bottle, please and thankya? Help yourself to a drink if you want, got lunch in the basket too if you're hungry."

Because the other thing about taking the sun on the beach rather than in the grassy comfort of her own yard was that it had the option of socializing, and America did so love a good excuse to sit and chat with folks passing by.

Claude liked that answer, actually, and she was pleased that she wasn't acquiring another to ride her a** about the whole Cee thing. "Always up for training." She replied, because as a Sun she had a 90% miss chance and she was sure that was a guaranteed failure if that kept up. She never sparred a full hunter before but, experience was experience...

Her eyes slid from America to the case she was reaching for, and stood there for a long moment before she closed the distance. She reached down and plucked a bottle out and handed it to the hunter. She still wasn't exactly sure about getting friendly with this one, no matter how...decent she seemed. In a way, Claude was waiting for the other shoe to drop, because America seemed too reasonable and sane to be true here on Deus...

She should take some chances though, she guessed. Maybe. She was bitten once, and shouldn't let that cloud every other encounter here...

"Thanks." She reached and plucked her own bottle, and was kind of looking forward to it. She hadn't had any in a really long time. It'd be a treat.

"How long have you been here for?" Not on the beach, but the island.

Pleased herself, America nodded, "Used to be Sun then switched to Moon, but both are combat divisions. All sorts of spar types, too, so just say the word."

Sipping her own drink, America thought back. Waking up for the first time seemed a lifetime away, but the reality wasn't too impressive. "A year and change," she admitted. "Seems longer though," and at this she laughs wryly. "I end up all old salty dog 'round newbies, but I guess that's just a case of the 'nam's talkin'."

Venturing it couldn't hurt to sit, Claude did just so. She took a spot next to America, with her knees propped up. She rested her arms on top of her knees, and twisted the cap off the bottle as she listened. "Why did you switch?" She asked, curious, and pleasantly surprised to speak to another Sun. Well, former, but it was still welcomed none the less.

Claude gave a soft whistle. A year was a long time. She got the cap off and took a welcomed drink, and smirked lightly. "Do all the hunters around for that long have a case of the 'nams?"

"Well to start, I was pretty shitty at it," America admitted with a grin. "Lost every spar when I was a trainee 'cept one. That wouldn't have been enough on it's own, but I came to find there was more I wanted to do. Still love Sun, though, and owe a lot to its people."

Digging her toes into the sand, the girl nodded, "Yep. It's not all regular fighting even, there's s**t that gets into your head and that's the ********' worst. But I won't get preachy at you about it," she assured the girl. "There's enough folks that'll get on you, all set doon an' be quiet betch yoo don't gots enaff scars tae matter." The last was said in an extremely shitty attempt at a Scottish accent.

"That I can relate to." Claude murmured, glancing at America out of the corner of her eye. It wasn't very reassuring if she wanted to stay in Sun, apparently. She didn't have as much reasoning as the hunter next to her though (yet) so maybe her chances were still good.

A nod of the head from the trainee as she took a swig of beer. "So I hear..." She appreciated American not shoving it down her throat, and quirked a brow at her as she...did a piss poor accent. After a moment Claude gave her a small smirk and asked, "Is that someone I need to look out for?"

The question required a long enough thoughtful silence to indicate that the bearer of the actual accent was not the most simple of figures. With a grin and huff of wry laughter, America finally nodded. "Yeah, the fellow's name is Rep, buff redheaded dude that's all scars and tats, I usually call him Scotland cause of the obvious. He's loud and violent with a ton of shitty opinions and really ******** warped ideas." A shrug and sigh, "But he's also a good fellow to have on your side the field. Easier to deal with in person too, gotta say. Basically don't piss him off enough to make you the enemy and you should be fine. Used to be in Sun, but now he's Death, so maybe your paths won't cross."

Lowing her sunglasses, America gave Claude a wink, "You want to know about anyone else, here? Cause I'm informative as ******** class="quote">
lucyal

The thoughtful silence was noted, and everything that followed after was also noted. Claude wanted to ask why should he be on any side of the field but their own, because they were all here to fight the same fight, but kept silent. Instead she just gave a short nod to show she was listening. The wink had a brief smirk tugging at the corners of her lips before it faded.

"Apparently so." She murmured, thoughtful, before asking. "The Sun Lead." Because to this date, she still hadn't the...pleasure...of meeting him in person.

"Allen?" America's smile turned fond as all hell. "He's gonna like you, don't be surprised if he drags you off to watch some Japanese pirate cartoons. He's not always here, spends a lot of time out in the field. There's a whole like, little warehouse in Sun HQ dedicated to costumes n's**t. You ask him for a favor and if he comes through, it's probably not gonna be in a way you expected, and a lot of the time he seems like a great big kid, treating this place a game but..."

The girl turned quietly grim, "Suns are the front line, and more of his people die on missions than any of the other divisions. So he tries to keep things fun for him and everyone else while he's here and not out fighting."

Reaching into the cooler she grabbed out another beer with a sigh, and added, "once I asked for extra work so I could make some more money and you know what he did? Had me dress in a ******** Pikachu suit and go sell people Pocky snacks." Shooting Clause a wry smile, she went on before taking a drink, "Made a good chunk of cash off it too. Watch out for Simon, though, he's your div assistant and stone cold."
