Expressive |Now that he is no longer a slave, Vodyanoi rarely hides his feelings -- good or bad. In fact, he prefers to broadcast them through any means possible. He communicates with his whole body, always moving about and emphasizing his words with ample hand gestures.
Curious |Having been raised with little education, Vodyanoi is curious about everything -- especially his own people. Few of their traditions were allowed to continue untouched in the households of their Oban masters, and Vodyanoi feels compelled to learn more about what they might have been like.
Sneaky |Although generally honest, Vodyanoi has no trouble falling back on thievery and manipulation when there’s no fair way to get what he wants. He’s a petty thief and a sly conversationalist, often able to influence people through insinuation and gossip.
history
childhood backstory Vodyanoi has been an Oban slave almost his whole life. He was brought to the city as a youngling and doesn’t remember much of his early childhood. Only the sounds of the ocean stayed with him -- waves, sea-birds and thunderstorms, all these came back to him in his dreams.
As a slave, he kept his masters happy… most of the time. He learned quickly and did his work as he was instructed. He was never caught lazing around or cutting corners, and he behaved as a slave generally should. His only vice was a set of rather quick fingers and an eye for anything shiny and unattended. His desire to show off his acquisitions would get him into trouble from time to time, whenever a member of the household spotted a favorite ring knotted in his braids or a familiar bangle around his wrists. Eventually he learned to limit his thievery to things that nobody would miss; pocketing bracelets that had gathered dust under furniture and necklaces that had been forsaken because of a missing link. His favorite decorations were the sorts of things that made lots of noise as he moved, and soon it became quite easy to identify where he was in the house by sound alone.
prentice After the water eathlings are freed, Vodyanoi was a bit lost. He was overjoyed to be free, but not sure about what he wanted to do. His instinct was to head back into Matori and to rediscover a home he barely remembered.
He wandered the land for a while, meeting people and learning about his own culture. Of all the things he saw, he was drawn most to the local songs and music -- and of all the types of music, it was the rhythmic drumming that appealed to him the most. Finally, he worked up the courage to join a troupe of musicians. For the first while he merely did chores and manual labor for them while learning a bit of drumming in his spare time. It was only after he had proven his skill in a contest that he was officially accepted as a drummer, and allowed to perform as a full member of the troupe.
rogue Vodyanoi's troupe travelled out of Matori, to perform in Oba. Many of the Oban cities and towns where they played had never heard pure Matori music... and many of the musicians had never seen Oba at all. Vodyanoi, having grown up in Oba, had a slightly different perspective, and had to take some time to process the past and trust Obans as well as other races. Very soon, however, he found himself itching to explore further.
today The leaders of Vodyanoi's troupe have given him permission to travel on his own. He's been tasked with scouting out other places that may be receptive to the troupe's music. They also promised to make Vodyanoi the leader upon return, provided he's able to satisfy the others with the knowledge he gathers. This wasn't a burden he had expected, and he's still figuring out how he feels about it.

aseara • Vodyanoi quickly snatched up the opportunity to talk to Aseara about a potential gig at an upscale Oban venue. He was impressed by her elegance, gorgeous looks and formal but not unpleasant manners -- not to mention her clear skill in organizing and putting on a good show!
juno • Vodyanoi was making his way to Jauhar for the first time when Juno stopped to give him a ride in his wagon. He immediately struck Vodyanoi was a cheerful, non-judgemental guy. He seemed to know a lot about traveling and offered some helpful advice... although he did make Vodyanoi feel a bit sheepish about how ill-prepared he was!
kalliope • Vodyanoi met Kalli in Oba -- he spotted her as she was practicing her dancing and was immediately curious. They danced together a short little while, then sat down to talk about their hopes and aspirations for performing. They both bonded over the fact that they wanted to travel and see the rest of Tendaji.
mynshaka • Vodyanoi met Mynshaka on the beach in Matori. They sang songs together and had a good time -- even attracting the curious ear of a passing Bushi! They parted ways that evening, but Vodyanoi hopes he'll meet the other water earthling someday.
onora • They were almost enemies -- driven by hunger, Vodyanoi stole some of the food that Onora had prepared for her neighbours. After a heated argument the two settled down a bit, and sheepishly Vodyanoi helped Onora cook some food to replace the stolen items. He learned a lot about local cooking from her that day, and he's still certain that she's the best cook in Matori!
rayolun • The first Shifter Vodyanoi ever met, Rayolun took the time to show him how to hunt and fish (even though he wasn't too familiar with the local fauna). They had a bit of a mishap when it came to trapping, but Vodyanoi learned a lot of useful lessons... including one on the importance of (sometimes) keeping quiet.
sanele • Vodyanoi met Sanele at a public meeting in Oba. It wasn't too long ago, but many obans were still hostile towards water earhlings then, and he was immediately impressed by her open attitude. He later learned that she was a xaraan trainer and racer. He can tell that she loves her animals and is passionate about what she does!

drum Vodyanoi's new drum is larger than his old hand-drum. It has a deeper beat and allows for greater range of sounds. It's hung from a shoulder strap, allowing him to retain much of his ability to move and dance as he plays.
costume The members of the troupe wear similar-looking (but not altogether identical) costumes. Vodyanoi is quite proud of his; it allows for easy movement while performing. Of course, he has his embellished with many extra bracelets, necklaces and trinkets.

Ika is a playful little sprite Vodyanoi found inside a drum. She likes music, so she enjoys life amongst musicians.
(from a familiar colouring contest, gifted by Heras Box!) Vodyanoi came across Delis, a trained zanteer, performing a dance in a crowded Oban marketplace. The creature didn't look too happy about being forced to perform and live in a tiny cage, so Vodyanoi bartered one of his necklaces for the furry fellow.
A perzi that Sanele gifted to Vodyanoi when they met in the marketplace. He's a kitten from a (not entirely welcome) litter sired by Sanele's perzi, Czar. Vodyanoi picked him out from all the others because of his colours, which reminded him of Matori and the sea.
