The bell rang at the end of the day and twenty-two students stampeded out into the hallway with shouts of delight. Friday, end of the week, it was time to party! If you listened closely, you might hear the barely raised voice of the teacher as she stood by the door.
“Have a good weekend class! Please remember to clean your utensils before you leave and… oh…”
And then they were all gone. Eleanor sighed first and then gave a little laugh. Even with just a cursory glance, it was obvious she would be doing some cleaning. Oh well. She really did hope they had a great weekend and maybe they’d enjoyed making scones today.

There was, if perhaps slightly unusual as an event, a girl in the back of the classroom staring vaguely at the wall and clutching a spoon. Her eyes flickered closed, open, closed -- then they slowly slid open, slowly slid closed, and then continued the flickered pattern. Ivy was very, very tired, and hadn't quite noticed the bell. It'd hit her eventually. ...probably. She'd leave before five minutes were out if she hadn't fallen asleep, but when you were half-unconscious and thinking vaguely about something or other, it was ever-so-difficult to convince yourself that the world made real noises.

It took Eleanor a few minutes of tidying up her desk and then sighing over all the dirty pans the students had left behind before she even realized there was someone still in the room with her. "Oh," she uttered the sound in soft surprise, then again in a fond and caring tone, " oh." She walked slowly over to the sleepy girl and reached out to gently take the spoon from her hands. "Ivy, dear? Are you okay? The bell has rung. You can go home now."

Ivy sputtered slowly back to awakeness, rubbing her eyes, making a noise that was somewhere close to a sigh. "Ms. Taylor -- I wasn't asleep, I promise, I was just --" and that was the point where Ivy realized that her excuse was absolutely bullshit, and she'd been about 75% asleep anyways. "I'm sorry to bother you, really." She looked like a girl trying to maintain composure while at the volume of a very small mouse, and her volume didn't match the calmness of her face. Essentially, she was unintentionally pulling off a Kicked Puppy Look.

Eleanor was instantly charmed by the Kicked Puppy Look and she moved straight into Mother Hen mode in response. "Oh sweetie, you're not a bother at all." She out the spoon down and moved around Ivy to start putting things away. "You're welcome to have a little nap while I clean everything up. I even have a jacket you can use as a pillow." As she spoke, she continued to fuss around, dropping dirty dishes into the sink. "You're okay though, aren't you? Are you not feeling well? Maybe I should take you to the sick bay?" She stopped her cleaning, reaching out to gently place the back of her hand against Ivy's forehead, checking her temperature with a serious frown.

The girl flushed (out of embarassment, not illness) as soon as Eleanor went into Mother Hen mode; she was fine, really...but Ivy was pretty alright with the doting. Who would say no to being a bit doted on? "I'm fine, really, Mrs. Taylor; I just dozed off a bit, it happens all the time." At least she had the grace to look a bit ashamed. "I don't need to go to the nurse, I promise! I'm not sick, just...tired."

"Well, you don't feel hot," Eleanor gave her one last concerned once over and then nodded to herself. "Sorry to fuss, dear. I suppose you'd best be off home then. Then you can relax. You've got all weekend to catch up on your sleep." The teacher smiled and continued with her task of cleaning, running the hot water after the scone batter covered bowls and spoons.

"Actually," Ivy stated (in a tone louder than her usual) after taking a few seconds to contemplate the virtues of going home, "do you need any help, Mrs. Taylor?" She stood up, pushing her chair back into the table. "I know my classmates are kind of messy, and my parents won't mind if I'm a little bit late. ...I wouldn't want you to get overwhelmed...you have to go home too." Ivy twirled a single curl around her finger, staring at her feet, and resisted the urge in her head that said JUST GO HOME ALREADY.

"Well," Eleanor absently placed a hand against her cheek and stared around the room, at the untidy dishes and leftover scones. "I really can't ask you to stay behind. I don't mind the clean up and you really should go get some rest." Even if it would be nice to have an extra pair of hands so she could get home early today. She would like to enjoy her Friday afternoon as well. "No, no. You go along now, Ivy."

"I don't really need the extra rest," Ivy muttered, scuffing a foot against the ground; "I'm narcoleptic, it doesn't matter how much sleep I get, I'm always tired anyways." A very quiet huff, the sort puppies make when they're fed up, and she began to move for the door. "...but if you really want me to go home, that's okay. I hope you have a nice day, Mrs. Taylor...sorry to bother you." God, she even sounded like a kicked puppy.

"Oh you poor darling," Eleanor said, looking like she was inches away in engulfing Ivy in a hug. If the girl had been any closer and hadn’t been moving towards the door, it probably would have happened. "You’re not a bother at all. Not at all! In fact, I would love some company while I clean. If you’d rather stay, of course, I mean, please do." Since she couldn't hug anyone, she wrung her hands together instead.

Ivy's face lit up like a sunbeam when Eleanor said she wasn't a bother, barely stifling a soft giggle. "Of course I'd like to stay, Mrs. Taylor. I want to help. You need to go home to your family, right? Just tell me what to do -" she moved closer to Eleanor, looking down at the ground and shy but also surprisingly calm - "and I'll do it, I promise."

“Well then,” Eleanor beamed right back at the girl and clapped her hands together. “Let’s get to work. I’ll set up station here and start cleaning, so if you could collect and pass me all the dirty dishes, we’ll get through them in no time.” With gentle orders and soft conversation, they set about finishing the clean up and Eleanor only asked Ivy how she was feeling around 100 times.
