User Image Kicheko hummed to herself as she hopped from the base of one tree to another, collecting the strange spiky fruit that had blown down in a little storm the previous day. The leaves were very hard and poked her nose uncomfortably as she carried the strange yellow-ish fruit, but she knew it would be worth it in the end. Pineapples were a tough fruit to eat, but when you buried them and let them ferment in the ground for a few weeks, they were delicious to eat and did funny things to your mind. She liked to play Gypsy when that happened, as their neighbors were a bit loopy sometime without eating any fruit at all.

But to get the delicious, sweet, mind-numbing juice, she first had to collect the hard, painful, not so delicious fruit that it came from. Wincing as she pricked her nose again, she set the pineapple down to rub her muzzle with a paw.

"Stupid thing," she muttered. "You're harder to hang on to than a fish!"

Since the event collecting the whale's bones, Rasul had been trying his best to settle in to pridal life. He'd found himself spending more and more time staring out at the water, watching the tide roll in. It brought with it tiny fascinating creatures, but he hoped to catch sight of one of the larger. Seeing a whale like that, even if it were out on the horizon, would be amazing. Especially since he hadn't had a chance to see the skeleton with the flesh still on it.

He was on his way back to the beach when he stumbled upon Kicheko, stifling a laugh as she seemed to jab her face on the fruit. Why was fruit dangerous? "Looks like your food might be biting back there," he offered, hoping she'd remember him. He still worried about upsetting others, not many were comfortable around the males from his homeland. After all, they had had a bad reputation for kidnapping.

As she rubbed her nose, a familiar voice came from beside her. Kicheko turned to see who it was and grinned when she recognized the face. "Ah, Rasul," she said, her tail flicking happily behind her. "Yeah, it's a little stubborn in this state." She reached out to swat at the pineapple in an irritated manner, earning her a prickle on the paw pad.

Shaking out her foot, she glanced at the male with a sheepish expression. She had enjoyed talking with him at the gathering and she was more than pleased to find out he intended to stay. It was rare to find someone she didn't already know, and even more so that he was a rouge and not a lion coming from the Kizi.

"So, how are you enjoying your new home so far?" she asked, giving up on the pineapple for the time being. She wanted to get to know Rasul since he was staying with them...and because he was a nice guy, from what she had picked up on earlier. And maybe just a tiny bit handsome. That had nothing to do with it though, nothing at all.

"I am," he admitted, fussing with a few broken thorns he'd stumbled on, "It's very different from where I was raised." Not that that was a bad thing of course. Home had never been the most comfortable place for him.

He still occasionally had nightmares of his father's teaching, but the sea was soothing to him. A little time in the waves, breaking against the riptide, and he felt empowered. He still wondered about his siblings, his mate, his children, but there was little he could do for them but try and stay strong. If he was meant to find them again he would. Like his mother, perhaps.

"It must have be fascinating, growing up here," he said as he looked the fruit over, "Everything seems so peaceful, and the families are so tight knit."

Kicheko nodded just a bit. Although she had never been into the rogue lands herself, she knew from stories from other adults and joining rogues that not all prides had the ocean just a short walk away. Some places were dry and hot, others were swampy and wet, and others still were on massive mountains in the cold. She was sure all of those places had their own charm and reason for hosting a pride, but she could never leave her homeland. It was just too beautiful and perfect...in her eyes at least.

"Oh yes, it's a great place to have cubs," she said with a nod, smiling at Rasul. "It's a large enough pride that we feel safe, but small enough that everyone knows everyone. It's really a wonderful place."

She tilted her head just a bit, wondering if asking about his old pride would be too much of pouring salt water on a wound. He seemed a bit sad whenever he mentioned the old pride, but maybe it was just his reminiscing face.

"What was your old pride like? Was there a lake? Or mountains?" I've never been out of the pride but I've heard there's lots of interesting places beyond our borders.'

"I was born in the desert," he told her, settling on his haunches as he thought best how to explain his homeland without driving her away from him. There were certain things about the Ukuucha that clung with him, most prominently his fear of how others would react.

"We used to sit with our mothers under big gnarled trees with thorny tops. There were coarse grasses inhabited by little scurrying rodents, and everyone came together around the water. A river though, not an ocean like here. I never knew that water could stretch out this far." When he'd first arrived in the prideland he'd nearly poisoned himself trying to drink deep from the sea, though he wouldn't admit that bit of embarrassment.

"But not everyone there was kind," he added sadly, "My father was terrible to his wives, and there were many that thought as he did. I never did though."

"The desert?" Kicheko echoed, eyes widening. "Wow...I guess you're used to sand at least," she said with a little laugh. She had seen some rogues step on the beach for the first time and walk on wobbly legs as they tried to get used to the shifting ground. No wonder he had been a pro at digging up those bones.

As Rasul went on, though, her smile faded just a bit. "Wives?" she repeated, unsure if she had heard correctly. "I'm sorry your father wasn't the nicest...nor...other members of your pride. I'm glad you're kind, though," she added quickly, ears perking up just a bit. "And I can tell you actually are and aren't faking it. I'm good at reading others," she said with a knowing nod.

Shifting to stand, she walked over to Rasul and patted her paw against his chest. "It's how you carry yourself. Lions that are faking being kind are way too cocky in their stance. Too forward. You kind of...you don't shrink away, but you don't thrust out your chest when you're being nice. Other lions are like that, like 'haha look at how nice I'm being'. But you're not. So."

Stepping back, Kicheko grinned at him. "Just in case you were worried or something. So your pride dissolved...and you struck out on your own?"

"Yes, wives," Rasul admitted with a bit of a cringe, "My father had three wives, our kin called them banu. They were led by a favorite, a beybanu. He also had control of a female that he felt needed... Punishing to learn her place. He tried to teach my brothers and I to do the same." It was a painful memory, their days of lessons had almost been the catalyst for him to not return from his adolescent search in the roguelands. But then he'd found Lithophoro and thought they might be happy there still.

"I did, but it wasn't the first time. When males in our pride became adolescents they were sent to the roguelands to find their first wife. I found someone I loved, but I lost her." It still stung, but the odds of ever finding Lithophoro were miniscule, especially since they had been separated by the strife in the pride before the collapse had ever occurred.

"And I appreciate the faith in me," he said with a bit of a laugh, "I've never been the tough sort really. When I was younger I used to do experiments with bugs and plants, everyone thought I was a little odd."

Kicheko's ears flicked back at the thought of multiple wives, then wondered why the lionesses weren't allowed to have multiple husbands. It didn't seem very fair. She didn't know much of the prides outside of her own and the Kizi, but both here and there, the different genders were treated the same. She had heard stories from other rogues that there were places where one gender was considered mightier than the other, but to her it was all a bunch of silly nonsense.

When Rasul mentioned he had found someone he loved, her heart sank just a bit, which surprised her greatly. She thought the other male was attractive, yes, but where did this sudden punch to the gut come from?

"Oh...that's too bad," she said, managing to get some sympathy in her voice. She really did feel badly that he had been torn apart from his mate, but at the same time she wondered if she could maybe fill that spot just a tiny bit.

"Everyone thinks I'm a little odd too," she admitted with a grin. "Well, maybe not odd...but they look at me funny sometimes. I think I just have a lot more energy than everyone else!"

Dulcea
also they got approved for breeding! I can't remember if we decided who would post them XD

"I-I like your energy," he said with a bit of a stutter, glancing his eyes away for a moment. He'd tried hard to eliminate the defect as an adolescent, but occasionally it slipped in when he was nervous. "I mean, it's sort of infectious." He nearly took a misstep and told her it reminded him of Litho, but he managed to snatch the thought back. It was nice to not be alone though.

"I miss her," he admitted, "But our family was never going to survive in tact where we were. We had five daughters together, and I wouldn't wish that sort of life for them." That had been his biggest regret, bringing Litho back to his home. Had he known how things were going to turn out they may have simply stayed in the roguelands. But then he wouldn't have found his way here. Everything was the way it was for a reason, he supposed.

I saw! I have no preference really, this should be his fifth RP though.

The little stammer made Kicheko grin and she leaned in just a bit, flicking her tail in amusement. That was so cute! "Do you? You'd be the first to admit it," she said with a little laugh. "Well, except my parents of course. But that's a parent's job, right? To love their kids no matter what?"

At the mention of his own kids, she flinched in sympathy. Five daughters born into a pride that gave males the power. She could only imagine how painful it must have been for him to know that some day they'd all have the chance of suffering under someone like his father.

"Well...wherever they are, I bet they're much better off now than they were before," she said with a firm nod. "If they're anything like you they're very kind and curious, so they'd find their way to prides were they could live a happy, long life." Pausing for a moment, she cocked her head to the side in the direction of the dens.

"So...did you get some place dug out for you yet? If not I could help you, show you how to make the dens strong so they don't crumble in the storms we get here."

Dulcea
Sweet! I'll pass her stuff off to you - I've got 7 breedings in my post as of now so I don't want them shoved way at the bottom. If you wanna wrap it up in the next post that would be great, we should shove 'em in the thread!

He hoped she was right, as much as he seemed to have moved on Rasul still worried about his children, but they were strong and they'd had Litho's influence to make them worldly.

"Well, not in so many words," he admitted with a laugh, "I've mostly been sleeping on the beach. I guess I've been lucky enough there hasn't been a storm yet." It was half choice and half a result of his failure in working with the sand and stone that was so abundant to them. He'd struggled for a while to put everything in place only to have it collapse over and over, until finally he'd decided to sleep beneath the stars. But storms, he hadn't considered. Were they worse this close to the water? He made a note to ask about all that later on.

"I'll let you lead me, I'd hate to find somewhere that I love only to die in a storm." And someone perhaps, at least it would mean dying happy.

Kicheko nodded just a bit. He was very lucky there hadn't been a storm yet. The sea was a beautiful thing, but it could also be very, very dangerous. At his words she grinned, though, and nodded enthusiastically.

"Sure! I'll lead, and I'll show you how to make the perfect den," she said with a happy flick of her tail. "I've been doing it since I was an adolescent so I know all the ins and outs. Plus I think there's a great spot that hasn't been taken yet."

She nudged Rasul's shoulder before hopping away, chattering about how to start with a firm and solid base before supporting the den the further back you went with branches and, in their case, whale bones.
