Naita had considered herself lucky when she, hungry, had found the fat, blue birds in her wanderings. And she WAS wandering, though not alone: she had her trusty 'companion' along with her.

Cid rode on her back, and was visibly disturbed by Naita's feeding. She figured he would be, being an herbivore and all, but she had thought he'd get used to it. He'd seen her feed a bunch of times, but he still squirmed squeamishly and, often, he'd bolt and she'd have to catch him again. It was a hassle, but she didn't want to let him go.

“You know you're not next, right?” she said to the leklan, picking out feathers from her teeth with a claw as she stared at the cringing beast, “I'd never eat you. Not unless you – you know – died.” Besides, the two birds she'd caught had filled her up good. She stretched, licking her bloody muzzle as she looked around her lazily.

A faint, familiar, sound came from nearby. “I might eat your cousin there, though.” she said idly, “Just saying. You're a special case, Cid.” she said, yawning... however, she knew she shouldn't linger. Leklan nearby meant Magescians nearby, and – though they were good meat - there would be more of them than she, alone, she could handle. No, she wouldn't linger.

“I'll rest a bit, and then we'll go flying again, all right, Cid?” she looked at him sympathetically. “Sorry, honey. I know you hate flying. But try to be calm for it, all right? You won't get hurt, that way.”

Cid mumbled, unhappy. Being the pet of a khehora – who creature felt might devour him at any moment – was stressful, and his body was showing it. His wool was frazzled and thinned, and he had small sores on his feet from rubbing them. He was also thin in body – it was hard to eat with Naita nearby.

In other words, he was not healthy, and Naita did not notice, or know what to do...

“I'll not drop you...” she said, stretching her wings and settling in for a brief rest, “Go eat something and then we'll go... I don't know, somewhere.” Serenia, after all, was starting to bore her. “Maybe Eowyn, though it's got so little grass...” she mused, “Or Ayr... or Aisko... We could go anywhere, Cid.” she said, flopping to her side, “Anywhere we wanted.”

Avani was out hanging out the last of the laundry on the line beside her house that was in the forest. She felt good hanging it out to dry, it meant that it was done, and if all went well with the weather, it would be able to go inside before dark.

She heard her leklan and sheron bleat and low from the barn. That poor sheron had been needing a break from the ranch, so she took it out here where it wouldn't be around too many predators.

She was about to go inside her house when she heard bleating coming from the woods away from her house. She stopped and looked out to the woods, wondering what in all Magesc that stupid creature was doing out there. She sighed and went into her house and grabbed the staff she used for herding and put on her sturdy boots. She would have to go out and get it if it didn't want to be something's dinner tonight.

She followed the sound of a few more bleats into the woods and was rather surprised to come along by a khehora resting with a leklan nearby. The poor thing looked ragged and thin. Why would a khehora want that animal for supper?

Well, Avani didn't care. It had gotten caught and so would be dinner apparently. It wasn't one of her father's and as far as she figured the animal was fair game, even if it was on her property.

So deciding it wasn't any of her business, she turned to leave the khehora and it's supper in peace. She wasn't about to witness the feeding.

Cid sensed Avani's presence and bleated desperately, staggering towards the Orderite.

Naita started, growling. “Hey, Cid, C'mon...” she protested, “Matey, I only just got comfortable...” she murmured as she sat up, “Don't make me have t' chase you over half the forest again.” There was some threat in there, but the thought of actually, intentionally, hurting her pet didn't sit well with her.

She followed after her leklan, finding herself not quite face to face with an Orderite. She paused as Cid staggered and clomped to the Orderite's side, staring at them with blazing fuchsia eyes. “Hey. You there.” She said, and this time the threat was real, “Get away from my Leklan.”

Apparently the stupid animal had some sense. Avani stopped and looked down at the pitiful animal as it clopped towards her bleating as if it's life depended on it. Well, to be fair, it sort of looked like it did.

Avani's ears perked at the warning tone in the khehora's voice and looked up at the khehora.

"I have no interest in your dinner, I just want to get out of here before you eat it." Avani reached down to pet the leklan and said, "Sorry little one, you belong to the khehora there."

Avani started to walk away from the little guy. But a last pitiful bleat made her turn around. She looked down at the little one and scrunch her face.

"You are going to eat it aren't you?" Avani said looking back at the khehora.

Perhaps she could trade for it if the khehora was going to. She had some sheron steaks in her storage.

"He ain't my dinner!" Naita roared, smoke curling from her nostrils, then repented as Cid shrunk away from her.

“No!” Naita said quietly, looking at the Orderite in furious disgust, “That's Cid, I ain't eatin' him.” she stepped closer, slightly threateningly, “He's my fluffball, and you can't take him.” The Orderite was fortunate Naita was full and willing to deal. After all, a fireball would toast Cid too, and she didn't want to spook him with claws...

Avani stepped back a bit and moved her staff in front of her ready to pull out the sword sheathed in it. Khehora who were talking were mostly harmless unless they used magic or their claws. This one looked like they were on the verge of doing one or the other.

"You own him?" Avani said turning her head to the side in thought. She looked at the little leklan who pressed against her at the snarling of the khehora. It seemed Cid didn't want to particularly be with the khehora, but Avani wasn't about to take what wasn't her's. She smiled down at the leklan and scratched his head, "He's cute. Filthy and overgrown, but cute."

Avani chuckled, "Well, if you arn't going to eat him, how about coming to my house so I can at least groom him a bit." Avani bent down to eye level with the leklan apparently named Cid, "Would you like to get that overgrown coat off Cid? I'll tend to your feet too, then you can rest in the barn for a while huh?"

She stood up and looked to the khehora and smiled, "I won't take him from you, I have many of my own."

Avani lifted her eye brows, "How would you like to come to my house for some lunch or snacks. I have some sheron meat in storage or some sweets I made yesterday. You can have some while I take care of Cid if you wish." Avani then raised her eyebrows, "Or you can watch me take care of Cid. My house was built with khehora in mind."

Pukes out a post because she wanted to post but brain not working

Filthy?! Overgrown?! Naita bristled: she was pretty sure, for a moment, that the Magescian was insulting her Cid. Except... he was kind of grubby.

And then the Orderite started offering things. Naita was floored. Nobody had ever offered her anything before – not so much, anyway. Food, occasionally. Aid, sometimes. But never all of the above, at the change of the surf. Had she not been hostile before? What did she mean by 'with khehora in mind?'

Cid huddled close to his savior, meeping piteously.

Sweets sounded good to the khehora, though – she'd only had them once, on a fortuitous raid with her pack. That had been nice. “What do you mean, groom him?” she asked, her eyes narrowing, “Are you gonna hurt him any?” she hesitated, glancing down at the Leklan, worried about how much he seemed to trust the magescian. Not that she wasn't trusting herself, but...

“You'd better not.”

Avani's house was built large enough to enable multiple adult khehora to fit in there. The third floor is four bedrooms that have a nest box for adult khehora to sleep in if they wish. All doors to the house are large to allow them to step in easily.

"I won't harm him" Avani said smiling. "Like I said, I have leklan of my own and they are treated kindly." Well, Avani thought, they were her father's leklan. But she took care of them more than the sheron. "I will cut his wool off, and if I can get it clean enough I can make some yarn for you that you can trade or I can make into cloth for you." Avani said smiling. "It doesn't hurt the animal, and I've been doing this for a while now. I may be slower than the other experienced shearers, but I do it well." She placed a hand on the leklan's head, "I'll treat the cuts on his feet too and give you some salve so you can treat them yourself."

"While you wait for him to be groomed, I'll treat you to whatever I can spare in food if you wish." Avani stood up from petting the animal and looked at the khehora, raising her eye brows.

"Would you like to go?"

“All his wool?” Naita exclaimed, horrified, “Why?! What am I going to snuggle?!” She made a sharp khehoran frown - his wool was why she adored him – it was soft and comforting against her scales, and made the world a warmer, more comfortable place. That was why she kept him as she did, because he was soft and cute. But what if he wasn't? Would he still be Cid? Or would he become prey?

Naita hoped not. It would be sad to lose Cid – he was her one friend, in all the world almost. The rest were either gone or dead, and she couldn't count the young Dovaa she'd met, or the Hybrid with her. That had been a one-time deal, unless they were lucky. Unless the three of them were lucky.

But, the Orderite had offered treatment for his feet, and Naita could see – now that she was looking – that he was scratched up and battered from his running and his run-in with the dragons. “Fine.” she grumbled, almost noncommittally, “If you know what you're doing...” she hissed softly, “That's more than me.”

Then again, the Female had been sort of hostile earlier, when she'd thought Cid was her dinner. And now she was friendly? So quickly? It made Naita a little uncomfortable, and didn't quite sit right. Nobody changed their mind so easily. “Say... this isn't some kind of trap, is it?” she asked, wary, “I'm betting red herrings to doubloons that a khehora is worth something, dead or alive...” her eyes narrowed: could she spring for Cid and run for it, “If I go with you, whats in it for you?”

Avani laughed a bit and smiled to reassure the khehora.

"I can use his wool to make you a blanket if you wish. Then you can snuggle his own wool every night. But I will need a lot of it to make one as big as you." Avani chuckled, "Bring him here in the spring and I can shear him again and get more wool. Also, he will have a little fluff still left on him, and it grows quite fast if you feed him well. Just grass mind you, they love that."

Avani smiled gently at the khehora.

"This is no trap. I live out here so I can be with my daughter, away from others who would hate me and her." Avani chuckled a bit and said, "Though I must tell you, my 'daughter' is a youngling khehora herself." Avani smiled again, "Her father gave her to me, and I raised her from an egg. Though despite all my care for her, the bond never formed... I have no idea why, but it never did. I guess when I read about the khehorian form, I wanted her to be all she could be and thus rejected it without knowing...."

Avani hugged her staff and felt lonely all of a sudden. She loved Honoka, but she craved adult company. She took it in any form it came in, khehora or two-legger, but she would always be afraid they would hate her or Honoka for being the hodgepodge family they were.

"Though a pesio khehora does lives in the area as well and is her teacher, so they are out for the rest of the day. You would be keeping me company, a nice trade for some wool." Avani looked down at Cit and touched his soft wool, despite it's mated state. "It feels like a fine quality... A very good trade if I do say so." Avani stood up and beamed, "You would be getting the better part of the deal in my honest opinion."

“Sounds good...” said Naita. A blanket would be nice... not the same as Cid's rich fluff, but nice... and though she didn't like the idea of being tied to a place or being anybodys pet, having some semblance of a future, a goal, even just a plan, was strangely appealing. Assurance that she would have some place to be in the spring, where she was welcomed and expected, was a whole lot more than she had now...

Not that she trusted this Orderite that far, of course.

Of course.

Naita gave her an odd look. “What...?” she exclaimed, bearing a fang in uncertain disgust, “Your daughter. Is a khehora.” She tried to piece it all together from what the Orderite had described. No use. “That's right confusing, it is.” she said. Her feelings about the bonded were mixed. Khehora were khehora, but bonded were odd sorts in general. And now there was one that was with a magescian and not bonded? “But it's a confusing world.” she said, shrugging in resignation.

Despite her reservations and confusion, Cid was still going with her, and there was still an invitation on the table and Naita figured that there were creature comforts. Even if it all turned out to be a hoax, she'd still have toasted Magescian and that would be a fine meal too. Like the Orderite had said – a good deal.

“I'll keep you company.” she said, a little grudgingly. “And I won't eat you.” she mumbled, “You be too strange a magescian... and likely to give me a stomach ache...”

Avani smiled at the apparent confusion of the new khehora over the relationship between her and Honoka. She was used to it. Many whom she entrusted the secret of Honoka's true bonded status too never really got why she loved the little one as much as she did.

"All that maters is that I love her, and would do anything for her."

Avani laughed at the thought of how she would taste to a khehora.

"No worries! I'm sure Honoka will be happy to have sheron steak tonight since we have a guest." Avani looked to the sky and said, "I'll have to hang out the rest of my laundry, but after that I can take care of Cid for you before I make dinner." Avani would have to take a bath after dealing with the dirty Leklan, but it would be quick if she was to cook a large dinner.

"By the way," Avani said looking back down. She held out a hand to the new khehora in trust, "My name is Avani."

She pointed with her staff in the direction of her house saying, "I live just over there, so when you are ready, you may come with me if you wish"

With one last post I'll call it done

Oookay then. Naita wasn't sure what to think about it, still, but whatever. Wierder things had happened.

“Naita.” said the Firani, “The name's Naita. Firani clan.” she added, “And I don't know if its nice to meet ye or not, but, fire and surf, I guess we'll be finding out.” She looked at the house through the trees... Flame, it was huge...

“Don't ye worry. I won't light it afire.” she quipped, hiding her wariness. “And I'm as ready as I'll ever be t' see your crazy-arse house.” she drolled.
