In order to get out more and meet new people with somewhat the same interests, Rannon decided to put a small add in the weekly paper for escorted trail rides through the sprawling tumble weed breeding mass of land that was Rattlesnake Down and its surrounding area. Breeding and racing were well on their way and she felt that she needed something a little more interesting then burrying herself in piles of paperwork and paper cuts and the last time she had tripped on Yin's lazy butt had decided her.

Into the paper the add went reading:

Scenic trail rides in a desert landscape, escorted. BYOH. By appointment only.
Hosted by Rattlesnake Downs. Contact Rannon at Rdracingrannonwork.thoroughbred.com or by phone

Under this she listed her phone number and her office hours.

Hopefully this would generate some interest in the community. She sighed and tired of all things artsy and scholastic she raced the border collies outside and proceded to groom each horse on the ranch. By the look of Monzon's belly...this number would rise soon enough.

Raymond read the paper often, obnoxious priss that he was. Over coffee, at that, in his obnoxiously fine house on a seaside cliff. A lot of things about Raymond were obnoxiously perfect, and he knew it. He didn't try to be this way, and his mother and sister had honestly tried to keep him from it. But in the end, blood told and clearly one of his unknown blood parents had been overachieving and/or a priss. He was what he was.

Still, he relaxed sometimes, and the idea of a trail ride in a desert... not a bad idea. He and Rook would spend some time together – the mare had been getting used to him, and she needed a treat. Of course, some would warn against sending the clearly abused lady into a situation she was unfamiliar with, but she was a smart horse. She needed stimulation. She needed something special.

She needed a date.

He emailed the woman and set a date and proceeded with the training that would have Rook ready for transport to the place.

~~~
The day came, and transport went without a hitch. He could tell the horse was stressed, but she trusted him, and – though she was wary – he felt honored when she accepted the apple from his hands and let him put the bridle on her. They were there, at Rattlesnake Downs, and – he scanned the desert with his clear brown eyes, observing the facilities with an appraising gaze – their guide should be there by now.
Rannon popped spryly out of the house after convincing the two border collies to stay in side. "Sorry, sorry, paperwork, It eats my life." She came over and offered her hand to Raymond. "Your lady is lovely, Caustic won't take but a minute to saddle up, you can use the little exercise pen over there if you want to warm her up a bit first."
Rannon went and collected Caustic from his stall brushed him down and saddled him with the western saddle which meant he was going trail riding and not racing. He eyed her suspiciously when she put the heavier saddle on. She smirked at him and patted his nose. "Smarten up, I will have no funny buisness with the lovely lady out there, remember who is riding you, she has my respect so she has yours too."
Caustic could be a little high strung but he was golden for Rannon and only Rannon. He was to smart that was the problem, hence why she was his groom despite her managerial job. He was a one person horse it was as simple as that.
Rannon mounted him outside the barn and walked him over to where Raymond and Rook were.
Rook shuffled a bit at the unfamiliar person, but calmed beneath Raymond's gently stroking hand. “You are lovely.” he reassured her as they waited, inexpertly putting on the riding saddle he'd had made for her. She accepted the compliment with dignity, and the saddle with wariness – the only reason she allowed it was because she knew it was Raymond, and she knew she could trust him.
Any other person would have found her impossible. She watched, warily, as the stallion was brought out and Raymond checked the saddle to be absolutely sure that he had done it right: no room for error, not with his Rook.
“So, you're Rannon, then? Raymond. Raymond Williams.” he introduced himself, “And this is Rook.”
"Forgive me yes, my name is Rannon, and this is Caustic Sunshine, my baby. Granted my 1000lbs baby but you understand." She giggled lightly. "I am sorry I would have been more prepared but one of our riders got sick so I had to pick up some of the slack, thankfully its just a cold and she should be right as rain in no time."
Rannon smiled happily at him. "Im very happy to be getting out of that office for a while. The trail I have picked is long but easy I hope you will enjoy it."
She pondered for a bit. "Rook, like the crow?"
Well, Rooks weren't quite crows, but... “... Yes. A sort of crow.” he said, mounting Rook with care. Yes. An easy trail was good – this was, after all, a date. Of sorts. With a horse. But Rook was a special horse, in ways Raymond didn't feel like trying to describe. “They are black birds, with white faces and beaks... an odd name, I know, for a horse of her colors, but...” he offered a handsome smile, “I felt it suited her, and she seems to like it.”
Of course, it could be a date in other ways, but Raymond would not force that to happen. His intent was to enjoy the beautiful scenery and his beautiful horse. “Caustic Sunshine... anything behind his name?” Raymond asked, getting Rook to walk over towards them – not too near. Rook had boundaries that Raymond – and others – had to respect.
"Well that you two like it is what matters," she said kindly. He was rather handsome even when he didn't smile like that. Caustic moved underneath her and she had the distinct impression he was amused with his rider. Cheeky horse. "Well it sounded poetic and cool, and its an uncommon name for an uncommon horse? Splash's like him arn't all that common. That it fits with his personality to most other people well that was coincidence. He likes to pretend to be a tough guy to see what others do. He has never bitten anyone to my knowledge and once he realizes it is me he stops pretending and becomes the balm to my soul that I know he is. Its just that no other human has gotten past those barriers because they have to trust him and since he acts the way he does they don't."
"Sorry eheh, he is kind of one of my favorite subjects, I ramble." Rannon led them to the trail head and opened the gate while still on Caustic, he put up with her antics and walked sedately through. Rannon waited for Ray and Rook to get through before she closed it again. "I would leave it open but our local escape artist only stays in his stall when he wants to, he avoids the main drive but an open trail might just tempt him off the lot."
Ray liked to think that Rook liked her name. He pat her neck.
“No need to apologize” he said, cordially, “I don't mind. It is always nice to hear someone talk enthusiastically about something – or someone – they truly care about.” He had been blessed to be around such passionate people all of his life – his mother, his sister, and now Khunm. They all had things that brought them to life, that animated them, that made them alive with joy. “Feel free to tell me more about him.” He followed her, Rook moving well. He'd been worried about how she would react to being ridden. “He is quite an uncommon one.” he agreed. Poetic, he wasn't so sure about, but poetry was not to be judged. “You can tell me more about the trail, too. I read the summary you sent, but I am sure this place has a story to it that cannot be translated into mere words in electricity or ink.”
“An escape artist?” he asked, bemused, looking at Caustic, and then glancing to the stables now receding behind them. “Indeed?”
"This particular trail starts out easy with a lovely large scale field vista, then it passes the foot hills where we will start to climb. Then the view gets spectacular, a mix of dazzling cliffs and hoodoos all the in the most remarkable shades of russet reds, it is in point of fact my most favorite trail, and I am delighted that I have someone else to share it with."
She patted Caustic's neck and he snorted at her, eyeing the lovely mare as he walked along.
“I am honored.” murmured Raymond. The grand view was lovely and as he and Rook followed their guide to the foothills, Raymond mused at the feel of Rook's muscular body laboring beneath him. How was a horse's lot, to be ridden on and never the rider? She seemed to be managing well enough, and did not seem to be too upset, and it wasn't as though he could carry the mare, even if he had felt the need to try. They stopped on a ledge as the sun struck the cliffs and the towers – seemingly carved by an unseen hand into regular-looking shapes – and Raymond gasped and made an appreciative murmur. “Spectacular...” he said, taking it in.
Rook, herself, wasn't so sure about the view, but Raymond seemed to like it and the mare knew he had worked very hard – hell, he'd worked hard just to get on her back, and she appreciated his efforts. If he liked this ride, let it be his treat. She could endure the workout, and she knew she would be all the better for it.
She eyed the stallion, wary. If he tried anything, she would kick him. If his rider tried anything, she would kick her. But, she knew that Raymond would appreciate some form of interaction from her, and Rook was at least going to give it a try.
”So. You.” she huffed at the stallion, ”Do you run races?
Rannon let Caustic's motion relax her body utterly, too much sitting in that darn office. Thinking about that brought up a plan for later. Her stable hands would look at her funny but she didnt think the horses would mind much if the paperwork was done outside at a desk as opposed to inside.
She smiled as Ray took in the Vista that she loved. "Not so bad when you think about it with this a short ride away." She mused.
Caustic was a bit shocked she had been so quiet. "Yes I run races, but I'm far from winning them all. There are some stiff competitors out there, have you gone up against Acorn Mountain?"
Rook almost wished the stallion hadn't answered, though that would have sabotaged her efforts to be social. Then again, that was kind of the point. ”Can't say I have” she said. She didn't really pay attention to the other horses when she ran, to be honest, unless they were a problem. She just ran, and that was fun enough, though she got tired of the crowds and bullshit quickly. ”Is he fast?”
“Yes! Very good placement.” he agreed, “My ranch overlooks a small, nearly virgin forest and a set of seaside cliffs.” he smiled, “So I know all about good placement. Though, the cliffs make it quite difficult to run horses at times.”
"Very, an exceptional competitor, well respected." He bobbed his head in emphasis. "You look like you like to run, I like it too but the noise gets annoying, sometimes its nice to come out here for a change. Some new company is also welcome." The mare seemed a bit reserved, unlike Monzon, which was the one mare he knew well as she lived at the farm. She had had a beautiful daughter too, his daughter. He liked being a father. Even if his daughter had inherited her mothers spunk. He was sure he had some too. "Do you have many others at your stable?"
"That sounds beautiful Ray, I would love to see the sea every morning. Thats the only thing aesthetically that my place is missing. Have you seen any dolphins or whales go by?" Rannon had a secret fascination with them and nearly leaned out of her saddle with interest.
“Oh yes.” said Raymond, “They stop by, briefly, nearby at times, breaching the water with their vast backs...” he gestured, as if he could somehow describe the majesty of a whale. “Fish too. The former owner of the land tells me that there are many fish in those waters... if you're interested in fishing, that is.”
Rook decided to pointedly ignore the reaching-out of the stallion. ”No. Not many. Two other racing mares, and thats all.” and that was fine with her.
"That would be amazing to see, I don't suppose you have any trails at your place?" she asked hopefully, she knew it was silly but whales! "We have three more here, there is a rather charming one that goes by the river but its for advanced riders for sure. I worry about people slipping and taking an unplanned bath." She giggled. She felt free for the first freaking time in months, and it was wonderful! "I'm glad you came, you have no idea how much I needed to got out for a ride. So thank you again."
"So what do your studs look like?"
"Ah a nice small stable then, we are very lucky I think." He decided to let it drop, she looked like she needed space.
