Please note: there *will* be an egg response to every candidate's touch - if it's taking a while, just remember we're only human and we want to do it as well as possible![ IC Ettiquette ]1. Bow to the Queen before approaching the eggs. It's only polite. 2. No running, no shouting, no dive bombing. 3. Don't linger by any one egg too long - just long enough to familiarise yourself. 4. Again, no running, no shouting, nothing that even *looks* like it might damage an egg. 5. No firelizards on the sands.Thank you to Ryu for the fabulous piece of art! <3333

[ the eggs ]
Lightning Fast Egg
This egg practically spits sparks. Its vivid shell is an ever-changing kaleidoscope of garish colours which seem to spin and dart when you're not looking, or when your eye has nearly slid off of it. There's a zip and vitality to this medium-sized egg that sings to the senses. It sits cuddled up to the Debonair Charmer, and they seem to be feeding off of one another to some extent. Written by Con
Hulk is Strongest Egg
This huge dark brown egg is dusted lightly with pale spots like freckles, and leans slightly on its side by Fight As One as if conferring with it. The egg seems to have a gravity about it that has other eggs lean towards it - or in some cases, to be trying to quietly move away. Written by Con
Fight As One Egg
Fight As One is a small dusky blue egg with what looks like the imprint of a fist on one side of its shell which very gently indents in. Surely no one snuck out here while the eggs were soft? Nonetheless, it has a solid presence, sitting upright and commanding. Written by Con
To me, my dragons! Egg
This egg lies slightly on its side, and seems to stand well away from the rest of the clutch - no matter how often it's brought back into the fold, it always seems to end up on the outskirts. It has a faint air of disdain for this whole business. Written by Tawny
Debonair Charmer Egg
This egg is indeed charming. It seems to have its own gravitational pull, and several of the nearby eggs are leaning towards it as if drawn in. There's a brightness to them that makes them stand out, even in this rather handsome clutch. A beautiful subdued pink, it is hard to guess at it's size as it is half-buried in the sand. Written by Tawny
No Such Thing As Santa Egg
This egg is right in the middle of the clutch, as close to as many other eggs as it seems to be able to. A vivid sky blue, it's lovely to look out, but slightly... oily? to the touch. That's probably just in your mind. No, don't wipe your hand on your robes, that's just unpleasant. Written by Tawny

It was mid-afternoon on a pleasant day with a warm sun but a lazy wind, the sort that goes through you rather than around. There was a small knot of people making the final approach to the hatching cavern. Almost all of the figures were dressed in grey but the stocky one at the front was dressed gaily in a strong blue doublet with little flashes of gold embroidery that caught the sunlight beautifully.
Venk was relieved and more than relieved and it showed in that old bright, slightly mischievous smile plastered all across his pleasant features. That characteristic smile had been missing now for a turn or so and was apparently making up for lost time as the candidatemaster paused at the entrance to the hatching sands, clapped his hands and rubbed them together as he turned to the assembled candidates. "Well well it looks like we've a bigger clutch for you all this time around, a bit less jostling for position!" he announced cheerfully, the pain of Hiraeth's tiny and sickly clutch far enough passed that he could make a small jest related to it.
"In any case, you all know the rules but we'll go over them again." Venk folded his hands behind his back and took on a (slightly) more serious mien. "No matter what you may have heard, or decided for yourselves, this is a clutch like any other. You will walk onto the sands and bow to the clutchmother before approaching the eggs. You will then touch them, all of them, and stars help me but none of you will punch them." Venk looked as though he couldn't believe he had to specify that but apparently he did. "Don't linger too long by any egg, and when you've finished leave the cavern the same way you came in. You can speak to one another but keep your voices down and just be respectful to one another, the eggs, and the clutchparents alright? Right, I think that covers everything." Venk stepped aside and gestured lightly at the entrance to the cavern. "Go on in."
There was not much need for glowlight inside thanks to the sunlight that spilled in but it was still dimmer inside than out and it would take a little while for eyes to adjust. When they did the assembled candidates would be able to see the eggs, the golden clutchmother beside them, and a spotted blue dragon sitting on the sands a little way off. The first item of the list was probably of the most interest and to any experienced candidate it would look perfectly typical of a healthy clutch, a little more than a score and a half of eggs of varying sizes and colours and patterns.
Venk followed his candidates onto the sands for a few paces before coming to a halt, hands folded behind his back and hazelish brown eyes trained on their backs and that smile still tugging his lips upwards. Today was a good day.

The tips of Malcarreth's tail twitched but he remained otherwise motionless. He wasn't usually so candid about emotions, neither of them were, but there were so many right now.
C'tis remained at parade rest, dark eyes fixed on the approaching candidates like two pieces of smouldering coal, if coal were brown that was. Malcarreth was right, and back to being pessimistic along with unspeakably peppy, which was a literal headache at times.
Malcarreth subsided mentally a little.

Touchings were always exciting events, and the candidates always eager to place their hands upon the eggs. Qyprenna, however, was a bundle of nerves, despite all that. Of course, she had been looking forward to the special day, but she also couldn’t help but be a bit nervous. Little firelizards seemed to be flitting around in her stomach, which also simultaneously felt like it was in knots. How that was, she had no idea, but that was how she felt.
It was all she could do to stay calm, cool, and collected as she waited for the go-ahead. Standing at attention in formation could be difficult, even on normal days, let alone ones like this. Yet when permission was finally given for them to approach the queen and begin their Touchings, she couldn’t help but expel a sigh of relief. Ok. She could do this. There was nothing to it. Just place a hand on an egg, listen, and then move on to the next. She’d be fine. Right? Right!
In an attempt to regain some of her composure, Qyprenna took a deep breath and then straightened herself up as best she could. She then allowed herself to approach Evmeth, and then bow deeply to the Queen, as was customary. She looked as beautiful as always, but on this day, especially, with all of her eggs settled in next to her. There was no doubt in the young woman’s mind that the golden dragon was proud of her clutch – any mother would be. Qyprenna stood back up after performing her bow, and allowed herself to gaze at the numerous eggs in front of her.
Where should she even begin?
There were so many, but she had no doubt in her mind that she would place her hand on all of them. It was better to be safe than sorry in that regard, she figured. All of the eggs were certainly interesting to look at, that was for sure. And although she was a bit unsure of where to start, one egg seemed to catch her eye as she gazed the clutch. As she took another deep breath, Qyprenna reached out and placed her hands upon it – the No Such Thing As Santa Egg – situated in the exact middle. She then paused and waited, curious to see how it would react.

Mriae Qyprenna - No Such Thing As Santa Egg The pretty blue egg's mind coils around Qyprenna's, slick and smooth and yet somehow sharp around the edges.
Well well, look at mistress right and proper! How does she quail and quiver before it? How does she try to paint a veneer over her weakness? Oh little one, if she thinks she will be fine she is sadly mistaken. The egg prods at Qyprenna's self-righteousness and seems to chuckle to itself, and there is a sensation of bright eyes watching her very soul from the shadows of undergrowth. Quite what the joke is is unclear, but it is clearly and squarely on her.
After a few moments more there is a sense of dismissal; carry on child, you are not worthy of lingering beside this one.

Well, fair enough then.
The experience of touching her very first egg was quite a different one. The feeling of the egg wrapping around her own mind was just...just...indescribable, really. However, the first one she touched didn't seem to be too impressed. It also seemed to be laughing at her in a way. She shrugged at this, but continued on to a different egg, placing her hands upon the Debonair Charmer egg that was half buried in the sands.

Cai snorted at the reminder that they shouldn't punch the eggs. The redhead's arms folded tight across their chest as a small frown pinched their lips together. Of course they shouldn't punch the eggs. Zarike was an idiot. A far bigger idiot than even Cai had expected. They'd still not had the chance to ask him why he'd pulled such a spectacularly stupid stunt. It had been too terrifying in the moment, standing there as the brown flopped out of his shell and went into spasms. It had been too busy afterwards with healers fussing around him and the new weyrlings while those candidates who'd remained (and there were many) were left in the dark to wait once again.
Cai had doubts about some of their fellow candidates. They'd not put it past many of them to try their luck at a repeat preformance despite Venk's warnings. It had worked well for the last kid right? "I swear to Faranth, Sereth and Adreiath anyone who tries that again will find their slippers full of nettles." They muttered to those few candidates near them.
Cai took to Touchings the same as they took to every other aspect of their life, with methodical precision and the goal of completion. They bowed deeply to Evmeth despite their inner distaste for the gold. Cai had considered briefly abstaining from standing this time. It was only their age that had won out. At 19 Cai had fewer clutches ahead of them than behind. If they wanted to Impress they had to present themselves. Still. They'd seriously considered it. Cai still had doubts as to the health of the overall clutch even if it was large. How many of the eggs were viable if any? How many might be stunted in growth of some fashion like the last clutch had been. Sure the circumstances were entirely different, but no blue had ever sired a clutch! There were just too many factors unknown and it irritated Cai to no end.
It was in this mindset that Cai laid hands on the first egg of the day. It was with a greater concern for the hatchling within that they gently stroked the blue shell of the Fight as One Egg, delicate fingers skimming the indent in it's shell. Was this proof of Cai's fears?

Aderyn had been excited about this day, not that anyone could tell of course. Her face was smoothed in a practiced precision as she stood amongst the other candidates and listened to Venk's instructions. She resisted her own snort, as she heard one, at the reminder not to punch eggs. Some candidates were so dim. Ade resisted the urge to smooth her hair as she no longer had any. Shards would she be happy when she could have her hair again. At least, this might be the first step towards that. Patiently, and unhurried, she waited as a few candidates went and bowed to the clutchmother before taking her turn. Bowing, not as deeply as the first, but with respect, she surveyed the eggs and decided to go with the one that caught her eye first. The colors seemed to swirl when it was in her peripherals. Aderyn slowly made her way over to the Lightning Fast Egg and gently placed her hands upon it, a slight wondering at the being inside.

Fight As One definitely has a theme song, and it hits Cai like a steam train the moment he touches their shell. Cai is WORRIED? Well, that's sweet, but really they're fine - now him, on the other hand...? There's a firm grip on him - not his body, exactly, though it feels like it might be - as a presence inspects him from head to toe. Well, well, he's not bad. Not bad at all. Good work, kid. Now, go see their siblings, there's work to be done, and crime never takes tea breaks. The sooner they're done here, the sooner Fight As One can get back to planning. He's released with what might be a clap on the shoulder. She's worrying about hair when she's meeting Lightning Fast? I mean, come on, Aderyn, that's reaaaaally what you're looking forward to? They are HURT. Aderyn needs to loosen up and relax a bit, have some fun. Lightning Fast is all about the fun. If she stopped holding back everything all the time, Lightning Fast reckons she couuuuuuld be pretty cool, but... there's a faint feeling of dismissal. Repression! SO unfun!

Mriae Qyprenna - Debonair Charmer egg Psh, you think that one's indescribable? You're going to need a whooole new word now you've arrived where the real action is! Some of the others are cool - she should visit Lightning Fast - but this one right here is totally confident in the knowledge that it's the best of the bunch.
The pretty pink egg's presence enters Qyprenna's mind at what could only be called a saunter, taking in the scenery and poking at interesting thoughts and memories. Well her intentions sure are nice, can't fault the intentions, but it wouldn't hurt her to live a little! What's the point in a life where you only ever did what other people said you were allowed to?
The egg does not seem to dismiss Qyprenna as such but neither does it seek further interaction, it merely watches her with the feeling of a cocked head and the hint of a smirk.

Live a little? The egg thought she should live a little more? What? Qyprenna wanted to stare. She wanted to ask the egg what it meant. But, for one, she didn't know if she'd even get a response. Secondly, she knew she wasn't supposed to linger on one egg for very long. It was for that reason that Qyp didn't stay, and instead continued on and touched the To me, my dragons Egg.

Mriae Qyprenna - To me, my dragons Egg. Is all of this really necessary? Such a fuss! The egg gives out a feeling of a long-suffering sigh before reaching out to Qyprenna; alright then, who are you?
Humm.
For a few moments the egg is silent, could just as well be a rock under Qyprenna's questing hands, but soon enough the silence is broken with a feeling of a huff and a faint flicker of approval; at least somebody around here knows how to do things properly! Honestly this whole affair is such a shambles, so chaotic!
The egg seems to sigh again and warmth - or the thought of warmth? - flares for a moment under Qyprenna's hands. She's got learning to do, as have they all, but with her drive and her attitude it is quite she that she will do well for herself. There follows a suggestion go and meet Fight As One, that one knows how to behave unlike some of the other ruffians in the clutch.
With that the egg withdraws its presence, seeming to sink into its own thoughts.

The young woman couldn't help but smile at what she heard from this egg. It seemed to like her more than the others had previously, and that made her happy. This smile, however, changed to a furrowed brow when she recalled something the egg had thought. She didn't really understand how the Touching was chaotic. It seemed to be going perfectly well to her. With a simple shrug, she moved back, and decided to take the egg's suggestion: she extended a hand out, placing it gingerly on the Fight as One Egg.

It always threw Cai when a dragon's presence was so strong. It actually managed to make the impression of physical contact, not only that but with rather human gestures no less! Cai's body tensed throuought the encounter but the overall sense of approval and reassurance that the dragon inside was perfectly fine Cai was left in a better mood. He could admire the dragon's desire to get back to work. What it might be doing within the confines of it's shell Cai had no idea.
Around the edge of the clutch Cai approached the To me, my dragons egg.
