Wolfgang tottled unsteadily on his four legs as he wondered away from his family's resting place. The early morning sun was just starting to peek over the horizon and the world around him was still mostly shrouded in darkness. Shadows from the nearby trees reached out to him, almost as if they were trying to snatch him up. He shuddered at the thought but kept on moving. Even at this early point in his young life he knew that his father lived in fear. Although his mother, small of stature like him and his basket mate Nova, tried her best to protect his father from the world at large and the world only his eyes saw, he still saw his father tremble and shake with sudden noises and unexpected shifting light. To be truthful, Wolfgang sometimes shuddered at the unknown as well, but he still wanted to know the world, not live in fear of it - or at least that's what he wanted to try to do.

That's why he was up so early on this chilly fall morning. He wanted to see the world beyond his family, outside of their ever present gaze. Even though they only looked to protect him, and his sister, he truly wanted to explore on his own without the protective circle of his parents. By now he was deep in the forest, each step taking him further and further away from the silent glen where his family slept. Now he was immersed in the shadows, and if he was honest with himself he felt a little suffocated - odd for a Soquili who was part fish, even he had to admit. The only sound echoing through the still woods was the sound of his soft hoof falls that stumbled every so often over the random tree root that twisted up front the ground. "If anything's reaching for me," Wolfgang said quietly to himself, mostly so that he could hear something else in that wide, dark forest, "It's got to be these roots, they're almost like hands. Black twisty hands that might reach up and pull me down into the...." He cringed a little as he walked and picked up his pace a bit, at least as much as he could considering his shaky foal legs. "You know, I don't think I want to talk about this anymore..."

His eyes continued to watch the woods around him, keen to spot any unexpected movement. That's why he was shocked when he saw the sudden flash through the trees, almost like a sparkle in the early morning light. As he drew closer, he realized that the sparkles came from the early morning light, rays from the sun streamed down, dancing on the surface of the lake that opened up in the center of the forest. All things considered, the foal felt that a nice swim would do him well on this crisp morning. At least it would let him get away from the shadows. Those were truly starting to creep him out.

The water felt as good as he had imagined it would and he quickly lost himself in it. Although land held its own concerns for him, water was his true home and where he felt the safest. While he was somewhat clumsy on terrain, he was fairly quick and agile here in the water. Plus this place was much more fun to explore! He'd breathed deep when he entered the water and was ready for a lengthy stay beneath the surface, but before he could really start his exploration, something caught his eye. Within a nest of swaying seaweed, something stood out against the free and against the dark base of the lake. He kicked his legs and swam down to investigate the object. Gently nuzzling aside the seaweed he found that the unknown object was in fact a shell. A big shell. Strange colors on it too with browns and tans and an almost redish color all heals together with a green-brownish orb. He floated there a moment, studying the strange shell. He knew that shells normally served as homes to different types of creatures, and he was curious to see what type of creature called this shell home. At least he wondered that until the tentacle reached out and wrapped around his front hoof.

Natasha pushed open the top of her shell carefully and looked around. The first thing she saw were a pair of eye - wide and blue, but not like the ocean blue that her father had often told her about. That was the first thing that she had known in this world, the sound of her father's voice. She hadn't seen him yet, but she knew he loved to tell her wild stories. She wasn't sure if she believed them all, but she knew that the ocean was the deepest blue, dark and full of mystery and wonder. These eyes were not like that at all - they were pale and almost ice like. And they were fearful too. One of her tentacles had managed to wrap around his leg and she pulled the little colt just a bit closer to get a better look at him. "What's wrong?" she asked as he trembled a bit.

She didn't for a moment fear for her safety. Her father had placed her here in this little seaweed patch in this tiny pond because it was safe. She didn't believe that this little colt could harm her only because her father would not have left her in a place where she could be harmed. But that still did not explain why the colt was so fearful.

Wolfgang struggled against the creature's grip for only a few seconds. He knew his father constantly warned him of monsters and shadows and demons of all sorts creeping from the shadows to come and snatch him up (not Wolfgang him, but his father - for some reason while Pavlov always feared something would come for him in the night, he was equally resolute that nothing should harm his children - it was an odd and contradictorily mindset, to say the least, but Wolfgang believed him). But this thing that had a hold on him, it didn't really seem like a monster. Really, if Wolf looked past the tentacles the girl looked almost as frightened as he was. Almost. Honestly she looked more confused and curious than afraid. Maybe that's what originally put him at ease. At least at ease enough to ask, "W-who are you?"

"Natasha," the little mer-filly said without a thought. Her father had already called her that many times and she liked the name very much. "My name is Natasha, who are you?" she thought it only polite for him to trade the same information back to her. She then realized that she still had a grip on his leg. No wonder the little guy was so shaky with her holding on to him like that. "Sorry!" she said pushing her hair back behind her ear. "It's like they have a mind of their own sometimes, you know?" She looked back at him and noticed that he really didn't have and tentacles of his own to boast for. "Well, maybe you don't know..."

With his hoof free Wolfgang thought for only a moment about if he wanted to bolt back to the surface, but the little filly's curiosity was getting the better of him. "I'm called Wolfgang," he responded with uncertainty. "And no...I guess I don't really know about my hair having a mind of its own." He looked over his shoulder at his short cropped mane, "It kinda just stays there doing the same old thing all the time."

He titled his head and regarded the girl with interest, "I thought mers only lived in the deepest oceans and seas?" Actually he thought that mers weren't really real at all. Just another myth or legend that people talked about. A story to be told. Or something his father saw and tried to protect him from.

Natasha paused and tilted her head regarding him, "Do I look like a myth or a legend?" She wrinkled her nose. She didn't think she looked like a myth or legend, but she didn't have a whole lot of experience with those sorts of things. "I am very real," she declared with a nod of her head that sent her little tentacles flailing all around her head. "And I also live here, my Papa thinks it's safe here so he left me here. But he's coming back, I know he is. My papa wouldn't leave me." She regarded the little foal again, "You're awfully small...where's your papa?" she looked around as if she expected to see the foal's father somewhere in the view of the area.

Wolfgang chuckled, "Well, you see it's rough getting my dad anywhere near the water. You see he's kinda afraid of the water....and the trees...and the dark. Honestly dad's kinda afraid of everything." He regarded the mare's face and added quickly, "But it's ok! I mean, that's just what my dad does. Mama says it's completely normal - well, normal for him. But I like water so....I just keep swimming, I guess."

Natasha tilted her head back the other way watching the little foal complete his mini tale. "Your dad seems interesting...." she said with a bubble of giggles. "My papa is very brave," she said with a firm nod. "At least that's how he sounds in all the stories he tells me. You see I haven't actually seen my papa yet, but I know I'll know him when I see him. Well, when I hear him that is - I'll know his voice, I am sure of it! And I can't wait to meet him and my uncle and see my mama and my siblings." She flipped excitedly in the water, "Oh, and you - we haven't even Really met, have we? You know my name, what is yours?"
PostPosted: Sun Jan 25, 2015 2:29 pm

"Oh, right," the foals said with a bashful smile. "Sorry, I got a little caught up in your story and your...." he thought about saying tentacles, but that would be rude. "...but anyways, my name is Wolfgang!" He couldn't image popping out of his basket without his parents both there to greet him. He wasn't typically as shaky as his father, but still the idea of going out into the great wide world without his mother and father right there to support him was a little frightening. He and Nova depended on their parents, even if they (er...he) didn't always listen to them. This little filly was brave, even if she did seem a little shaky in the water with her new fins and all.

"Do you need any help?" he found himself asking, feeling some form of responsibility for the filly. It didn't mater that she was bigger than him or that she certainly looked a bit more frightened than he did, he wanted to make sure that she made it back to her family in good time. After all, he was the first horse that she saw - he wanted to help show that the world she found herself in was a typically good one, not the frightening on that his father insisted they all lived in. It's possible that was at the root of some of his behavior....

"Help?" Natasha asked shifting in the water so that her belly was up towards the bright light that rippled along the surface. "Do I look like I need help?" she didn't feel like she needed help at the moment. She mostly felt like she wanted to look around. After all, it seemed that her fins were strong and she was pretty sure she could swim for a little while before getting tired. Yes, that was what she wanted to do. Although, she supposed just swimming around by herself could get awfully boring far too quickly. She gasped as the perfect solution occurred to her, "You could help me explore! I want to see everything...well not all today, but as much today as I can. You can help me with that, can't you?" she asked turning her large, jade eyes on him pleadingly.

Wolfgang was somewhat taken aback by the filly's suggestion. Fresh out of the basket and all she wanted to do was explore. Actually, that made her a soul after his own heart. He remembered in the moments after emerging from his own basket all he wanted to do was see everything. He drove straight on ahead while his sister hung back, close to their parents. He chuckled thinking how grateful their father had been that he had shorter legs - somehow his poor papa though that would keep him closer.

Half a forest and a lake away Wolfgang snickered a bit and was ready to help this new little adventurer to start off a career in exploring. "Sounds great - where do we start?"

"Wonderful!" Natasha said amidst a midwater flip. "Where shall we start first?" she looked around the lake wide-eyed. There was the little seaweed patch where her papa had his her shell, but she really already knew that pretty well so she'd have to find something else to look into. Well there was a small pile of rocks a few clicks away, that was promising, or the sand bed up near the surface...oh - the Surface! The surface would be perfect! "Let's go!" she said speeding off, forgetting that she had neglected to fill her new friend in on her plan.
PostPosted: Sun Feb 08, 2015 5:41 pm

"Wait - where are we going?" he asked as he sped off after her. She was swimming straight towards the surface and he was a little concerned. He knew he could bound back and forth because the water and the land without any problems, but he wasn't sure how a mer could manage such a transition. "Natasha," he called after her. "Wait - just slow down!" he reached out with his mouth and tugged on her tail just a little, not enough to hurt her, just enough to encourage her to wait. He was starting to sympathize with how his parents must have felt when he emerged from the basket and wanted only to run the whole wide world with his little legs. To his credit, he didn't want to go anywhere incredibly dangerous right off the bat.

"What is it?" Natasha asked flipping quickly in the water. She giggled a little at his panicked face, "Relax, I just want to see what's up there!" she said and went back to powering her way to the surface. As her head broke the surface of the water she threw her hair (tentacles?) back and inhaled deeply. She squinted her eyes against the light, brighter here than it had been beneath the surface of the water, and looked around. She couldn't make out much - mostly shapes and blurs with many of the items at a distance. The colors here though seemed different than those beneath the surface of the water. She glanced over at Wolfgang who had surfaced beside her, "Is this where you live?" she asked curiously.
