Megrez hadn't exactly been truthful to herself when she'd said that she would devote the rest of the day towards writing her song for next planet visit's ritual. After about two hours of staring at a blank page and idly flipping between the Hymmnos lexicon and grammar pages, she decided that perhaps she could find a little more inspiration on patrol and let all the fancy conlang words sit for a bit. Tonight she was bounding across the rooftops, feeling carefully around for any approaching auras. Sure enough, there was a Negaverse Chaos aura below, and it wasn't coming from a mere lieutenant. There was a captain down there.

Don't let the hate sit in you, she thought to herself in an attempt to cement her epiphany from earlier. If the captain wasn't doing anything, there'd be no reason to be too rough... right? To kill this captain right away would mean acting blindly out of hate. It wasn't like senshi ran on on an experience point system and killing him would net her a level up. Cautiously, she summoned up one basic-level normal egg and dropped it off the roof to where she thought the captain was. If she was noticed, she could determine his intentions from there.

No worries!

Captain Merlinite cracked his knuckles idly as he sat at the edge of a roof top, looking down over the street below. It was still and there was no interesting activity down there, which did not really lend itself to filling his quota like he wanted. He wished he could have just had an easy night, and not had to actually go out hunting and putting in effort to get the energy he needed: where were all the homeless bums that were easy to drain when he needed them?

His mind was too busy with worried and convoluted thoughts for him to focus on something so mundane as energy hunting. It seemed like the last of his concerns, but he knew if he did not do it, there would be questions. And he could not really afford those right now.

Feeling an aura nearby, he was almost relieved for the distraction. He stood, shaking out his hands and hopping down to the street, looking around and realizing the aura was above him. Well, let it come to him, he thought, waiting and watching the rooftops thoughtfully.

He saw an egg drop nearby, frowning at it, then looked back up, stepping back to get a better vantage point.

"Get down here, Senshi. I can sense you up there. What are you doing?"

"What do you think I'm doing?" Megrez called back down from the rooftops. She decided to play along with the captain, and she jumped off the roof, landing near him. "You're a Negaverse captain. I should at least put in the effort to monitor you to make sure you're not draining or de-starseed-ing innocent people. It'd be one thing if you were just a lieutenant, but you're a captain. The Negaverse trusted you enough to promote you. That means you're at least a little dangerous." Her heeled boots clacked on the pavement as she came a few steps closer. "Tell me something. How many starseeds did you pay for your promotion with?" It might have been an odd turn of phrase, but Megrez had a feeling that you had to turn in at least one starseed to be eligible for promotion in the Negaverse.

"So. You're going to sit up there and wait for me to hurt someone before you come down here and stop me? Because I can make that a thing, if that's what you want."

He was grumpy, now that he was out and about, and talking to someone he did not know. A Senshi, and he was torn on how to respond to her now. He wanted to be that Nega she was talking about, the one trusted enough to get a promotion, but in all his strange dealings the past few days, he hardly knew how to respond to the white moon now. Half of him still wanted to attack them outright, but the other half knew that one or two of them had him in their debt for their help.

It was a strange place to be stuck in, and he was not too happy about it.

"That's not how it works, Senshi. But I don't expect you to understand, so it's not surprising that you don't. Hey, are you a healing senshi? I mean, does your magic let you heal people?" He had been asking everyone that question, and he supposed her answer would dictate how he treated her.

"And now that you've said you'll be willing to do that, I'm not going to let you." With a murmured call, another basic egg came into existence, landing neatly in Megrez's hand. She only had one left (aside from the larger Super eggs) after that; she was going to have to start hitting hard if the situation escalated. "That's not how it works, huh? Fine. Instead of paying for your promotions in starseeds, I take it there are just quotas you have to meet before they consider you?" She was all ready to give this captain egg on his face till he asked his next question. A healing senshi? What need would a captain have of a healing senshi? Surely there was some Corrupt who could heal he could pick from instead? Of course, the point was moot. Megrez had no healing skills to speak of, not even any real medical knowledge. "No. No healing magic at all. You can't even eat these eggs. They don't stick around long enough." She stood and watched him carefully, egg in her hand, ready to counter if he moved to strike.

Merlinite clicked his tongue behind his teeth in irritation, shaking his head and clenching his hands at his side into tight fists. He watched her with an angry expression, trying to decide if he wanted to follow through with his impulse to fight her, or if he really did not have it in him.

He had been helped by senshi recently, and they saved the life of the General he was taking care of. She still needed so much more help, but without them she would have already been gone.

But they were always his enemy, and he could not just forget that. He wanted to keep his place in the negaverse, to grow it, and he could not afford to have a soft spot for his damn enemies. The last thing he needed was to not be able to fight.

"Then I guess I'm going to have to make good on my other use for you."

He had to stay true to the Chaos inside him, even if, right now, it did not feel right. He called his weapon to his hand and gripped the club tightly, watching her, and the egg she was holding, for a moment before he lunged at her, trying to move quickly and take a swing at her.

Other use? Megrez wasn't going to waste time asking what it was, since he was now charging at her, but she thought it was obvious: he was going to grab her starseed and use it for whatever nefarious purpose the Negaverse used starseeds for. He'd probably eat it or something. Of course, she wouldn't let him anywhere near her chest if she had anything to say about it. Taking a hop-step back, she launched the egg she was holding, aiming for his face. If she aimed right, she would be able to truly give him egg on his face and leave him vulnerable for the larger, more powerful eggs.

Merlinite was quick, and expecting her attack. It was not like it was subtle, the way she was holding the egg the whole time. He did not find it too difficult, then, to dodge out of the way of it, getting in as close as he could to take a swing at her.

It felt strange. He usually enjoyed fighting, but this was just not sitting right with him.

Everything was turned on its head and he did not know how to deal with it. He realized very quickly, though, that he did not want to be here. He was not going to get anything out of this fight expect potentially hurting himself and a senshi. While he used to be okay with that, now that he had debts to some of them he was just not into this.

He growled and after taking a swing at her, whether or not he hit her, he started to pull back and try to disengage from the fight almost as quickly as he had started it.

The swing was a very close call. Megrez nearly took a solid body blow that only another quick hop-step back saved her from. She noticed that the captain was starting to hold off even after just one attack, however, and that was a bit confusing. If he wasn't up for countering, she wasn't going to chase him down right now. He wasn't the only one experiencing a little upheaval, after all. "Where are you going?" she asked, trying to see if she could gauge his intentions that way.

Merlinite shook his head, cracking his knuckles and trying to look tough as he broke away from the battle. It was very hard to run away, though, and look intimidating while doing it. There was really no way for him to do it.

But he tried anyway.

"That's none of your business, senshi," he grunted, though that was a pathetic answer. What, he suddenly got a call she did not hear or see and had to go answer it?

Maybe he had just remembered he left his oven on.

Really, he was just feeling guilty. It was such a strange and stupid sensation, it caught him off guard completely. He was not sure how to deal with his own feelings now. That was a huge problem for him, as he was the kind of guy that liked things to be simple. Black and white, really.

"I just don't want to fight you as much as I did, alright? I mean, hell, don't you need a better reason to fight someone than just because?"

Megrez shrugged. Maybe it was none of her business. The question was mostly rhetorical, anyway. He could go to the moon for all she cared, as long as he wasn't calling in backup (except his being on the moon would be a bad thing, since Chaos had no place there, period). "You don't want to fight?" It was a bit odd, really; she was used to aggressive Negaverse agents who wanted to throw down with senshi on principle. And, of course, there were plenty of senshi and Knights who would throw down with the Negaverse on principle (she was thinking of Megiddo and Penthesilea). "Some people will fight 'just because.' But I'm... trying to be more reasonable." If the captain didn't want to fight, she (probably) shouldn't pursue him, or she would be the aggressor and he would have every reason to club her.

Sami-Fire

Merlinite was all torn up inside about where he stood. All of a sudden he found himself caring for more senshi than he did negaverse soldiers: he had more friends on the side of his 'enemies' than his 'allies'. It was insane to him, and he hated admitting it to himself. It made him feel weak and like a failure.

He was supposed to be the best in the Negaverse at what he did. Now he was not sure what that even meant any more, let alone if he still agreed with it. It was hardly a goal for him, and he did not see the visions of himself in glory and power as easily and clearly as he had before.

Now all he saw was darkness and confusion flashes of memories and glimpses into a future he was not even sure was real. His present was not making anything easier.

"I don't know what I want to do any more, senshi. I don't know if you're my enemy or not. I know I'm supposed to beat your face in, but I don't know. There's something about your face, about most of the faces I see on your team, that I don't want to bash. And I hate that. Why can't you people make it easy for me to hate you?"

It was an interesting question, really. In fact, Megrez had found that very question drifting through her own head on occasion. "I could ask you the same thing. Why can't you people make it easy for me to hate you? Even now, I'm finding out stuff about things like love that I never knew about before. It's like, even if you have a little love, you're not a total loss. It's when you let yourself get filled with hate that you completely lose yourself. If you're finding it hard to hate, then maybe... maybe something can be done for you." Not that she had any idea what that something could be. Would this guy ever be a candidate for purification? She had no idea, though it seemed that the Nega might have something more to him.

Merlinite frowned at her, but he was not sure what else to say or do, or what to think. He was doubting everything he was supposed to believe in, and that was starting to scare him.

To think that maybe Chaos was not everything, and did not have all the answers... maybe he was blindly following Chaos because that was what he was told to do.

And what she was saying made sense, which scared him as well. He shook his head, not daring to reply right away. What could he say?

"Look, I gotta go. I don't want anyone finding out about this conversation, alright? If it gets back to me that you're talking to other senshi about me, I'll make sure I'm not so nice next time, alright?" Even his threat sounded hollow and unsure. He watched her for a long moment, then turned away and took off running as fast as he could.
