Abdiel dashed through the trees glad for the cover of the night to help hide him. If only his tribal markings weren't so bright. An owl screeched and an arrow whizzed over his right ear and he veered to the left, narrowly avoiding two closely growing trees. He kept running at full speed, ignoring the pain in his legs as twigs and prickly bushes grabbed at him. He relied on his instinct to carry his body around and between trees, following a path of its own.
He had been exploring the Western Forest, a little farther west than he'd been yet, and had met his worst enemy: hunters. He hadn't seen any for years, as there were very few left in the Soquili lands, but every now and then there were a few desperate souls who needed a unicorn horn to heal some sick relative or child. Or, which was probably the case most of the time, they were in it for profit. Either way, Abdiel was keen on keeping his horn, and his life. He kept running, even when his body longed to stop.
He strained his ears, listening for hooves behind him, but heard none. Ahead was a cluster of trees, and he willed his limbs to slow. He could hide behind the trees and rest. Wait it out, to see if they were still following him. He'd have to head back before too long, make it back across the river and warn Heaven-Leigh. Not that she ever ventured out this far, but it was still something he had to do. She would tell Tristan. And then there was Yue to think of now too, even though the two of them weren't well acquainted.
He reached the cluster of trees and stopped behind them. He needed to catch his breath, which was making steam in the chill air. He couldn't see well around the trees, but he kept his ears perked, alert to any sounds.
"Dionysus? Dammit," he cursed under his breath as he realized the owl was not with him. He looked toward the sky and hoped that the owl would find him. He knew he could not have gotten hurt, for surely he would have felt it, as close as the two had become. Wouldn't he? ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ Dionysus swooped over the trees, screeching his dismay at loosing Abdiel. He didn't blame him for taking off, but all the same, he had to slow down these hunters and find him. Abdiel had spoken of hunters before to Dionysus, but he'd never seen them until now. Nasty, mean men on brainwashed horses, brandishing bows and arrows. Dionysus had to make sure he didn't get hit with one of those arrows, even though the hunters weren't after him.
He dipped below the trees and followed the sound of hooves. One of the hunters had slowed on his horse and was aiming his bow. Dionysus screeched and dove, tearing at the bow right before the arrow took off. The hunter cursed and re-aimed his bow for Dionysus, but the owl had already zoomed ahead and above the trees. He had seen Abdiel, bright blue tribal markings zigzagging through the trees and he was determined not to loose him again. He also noticed the the hunters were beginning to slow and Abdiel was continuing to get further and further away from them. Either the hunters were giving up, or they were changing tactics. Lucky for Dionysus, a breeze was blowing in the direction he was flying, helping him get to Abdiel faster. belloblossom quoting because...yeah XD

Tenzin and Damian
It had been Damian who had alerted Tenzin about the humans in the forest. The wolf had been bristling, with teeth bared and wild eyes as he'd reported the information to his bonded Soquili. Tenzin was his protector, his Alpha, and his constant companion. Tenzin would protect him, he was certain, and Tenzin did. With a command that Damian stay hidden and away from human eyes, Tenzin walked away from his familiar and out into the forest, away from his hidden sleeping den.
Even in the low lighting, Tenzin had a good idea of where he was going, and he was able to navigate himself through the dimly lit forest and towards the sounds of chaos nearby. He was about to move onto the main path, when he felt something large run just past him, and he turned with alert ears. In the distance, he heard the sounds of human voices, and he pinned his ears. Those humans would do good to stay clear of him, unless they wanted to deal with the draft stallions powerful hooves.
Instead of charging them and chasing them out, Tenzin was more interested in the large creature that had passed him. It had seemed like it may be a Soquili, and he had a feeling that for whatever reason, it was the Soquili that brought the humans to Tenzin's forest.
So, he followed the creature. Sure enough, he found a black and blue unicorn, breathing heavily just off of the path. Turning his head towards the direction that the humans had been in, he made a snap decision. If the humans were after this unicorn, they were out of luck. Tenzin would protect his horned cousin just as he would Damian.
"Fret not, unicorn. My name is Tenzin, and these woods are my home. Follow close if you want to leave those humans behind." Tenzin said to the unicorn, coming up behind him.
--------------------------- --------------------- ---------------------
Damian had been watching from the entrance to the den with anxious eyes, ever since Tenzin left to go out into the forest. He shook with anticipation for anything that could happen. Had he just sent his bonded to his doom? He let out a quiet whimper at the thought, and closed his eyes. He had been told to stay here, but...
I need to stop being such a coward. I have to go find him! Thought Damian, and he burst forward, only to catch a peculiar scent on a breeze. He tilted his head back and spotted an oddly colored owl flying overhead. Another familiar perhaps? Maybe he would know where Tenzin was!
"Hey, you! Owl! Wait!" Barked Damian, running after the owl.

Abdiel was trying to keep his focus on the hunters, even though he couldn't see them around the trees, or hear them anymore, which both relieved and troubled him. Then, a sound to his left caught his attention and he turned to see a large draft stallion in front of him. He almost blended in with the trees, which Abdiel thought was lucky for him.
Relief washed over Abdiel again as he realized that this forest was this new soquili's home, which meant he knew these woods well. Maybe there was such a thing as good luck after all. The stallion also looked quite strong, quite possibly enough to withstand a few arrows and do some serious damage to an unskilled archer. Abdiel nodded to him, letting him know he would be glad to follow. "Thank you," he added in a low whisper. "My name's Abdiel. Which way are we headed?"
Still, even with this new guide, Abdiel would keep alert incase the hunters were coming around to head him off another direction. He didn't want to fight, but he felt more assured if he had another with him. Abdiel was a strong stallion, but get hit with in arrow in the throat and there wasn't much to be done, even with his quick healing. He hoped these archers were not skilled enough to be any trouble, but his instinct was to run rather than take that chance.
"Be careful, they might be heading around a different way to catch us off guard." And then he added hopefully, "You haven't seen an owl by any chance, have you?"
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
A voice and a bark from bellow caught Dionysus's attention and it wasn't a human voice by the sound of it. Then he saw the grey wolf running amongst the trees beneath him. This first struck him as odd, as he'd never been chased by a wolf before. Wolves didn't generally eat owls, not that he knew of. But then he noticed the red markings and realized this was no ordinary wolf. Dionysus wondered if there was perhaps another soquili nearby, one bonded to this wolf as he was bonded to Abdiel. However, there was no time to find out, because he needed to reach Abdiel. The hunters had split and gone in different directions and it didn't seem like a good thing for the unicorn. Still, the wolf seemed intent on following him for some reason.
"No time!" he screeched back. "I'm looking for someone! There's hunters back there, with arrows!"
And then Abdiel spotted the bright blue markings and blue mane of the stallion. He was there, behind a thicket of trees! And there was another stallion with him too. He swooped downward, hooting softly as he did to let them know of his approach.
"Abdiel!"belloblossom What do you think? Second attack from the hunters? They fight them off, all four of them. I couldn't decide if there were three or four hunters. I think they could take four though. What do you think?

Tenzin and Damian
The unicorn seemed to trust Tenzin without a doubt in his mind, something that Tenzin was grateful for. Often times when Soquili approached him, they were scared due to his great size and physique. He had worried that this unicorn would be intimidated for this reason, or think that Tenzin was one of the Soquili that the hunters had tamed. While he bore no resemblance to the brainwashed Soquili, a frightened stallion could easily misjudge him. Thank goodness it appeared that this wasn't the case.
The unicorn's name was Abdiel and when he asked where they where headed, Tenzin's reply was, "Deeper into the center of the forest. The trees become closer together and it is difficult for the untrained hoof or foot to follow within. Stick close beside me, or you may get lost." He advised the blue and black unicorn, who replied with his own piece of advice.
Tenzin had never known why the men-folk of the lands insisted upon hunting the Soquili, but no matter the reason for it, he would not stand for it in his forest! Good grief, it looked like Damian's territorial nature was rubbing off on him. He nodded to Abdiel, acknowledging the warning that was given to him, but when he asked if he had seen an owl, he was opening his mouth to apologize and say that he hadn't, when a soft hooting overhead caused him to look up.
"Do you mean that owl?" He asked Abdiel, and was about to turn towards the forest when a familiar bark caught his attention, followed by the glowing markings of his familiar. He snorted in surprise, and took a step back. "Damian! What're you doing here? I thought I told you to stay put!"
--------------------------- --------------------- ---------------------
The owl hadn't listened to Damian's request to stop, screeching that him that he was looking for someone, and that there were hunters with arrows in the area. Damian let out a whimper and slowed to a trot, until he heard the owl hooting a little further ahead. Perhaps the owl had found the someone he was looking for?
This is no time for me to run around with my tail between my legs! Damian scolded himself, and then took off like the arrows that would be hunting him and Tenzin, if they didn't get to safety soon.
What a relief it was to find his bonded Soquili standing with another stallion, this one a blue and black unicorn, and accompanied by the owl that he'd spotted earlier. "Tenzin!" He barked softly, approaching the stallion, only to stop and look down when he was scolded for leaving. "I'm sorry Tenzin, I just had to make sure you were alright. If something happened to you after I sent you out... I couldn't live with myself, Tenzin." He whimpered, and looked up at the large Soquili above him.
Tenzin sighed and lowered his head so that he and Tenzin could look properly at one another, "There's no helping it now, and I'm grateful that you're here. You've got the best nose out of all of us, I'm sure. We're taking them home, and you're the lead now." Explained the draft stallion, and then to Abdiel and his owl familiar, at least, that's what he assumed, he said, "We all must keep out wits about us. It's a short travel to my home, but like you mentioned, Abdiel, those humans could intercept us at any time. Though I don't like the sound of it, we may have to fight our way through this one, should it come to that." Said the draft stallion, before turning back to Damian and nodding towards him, a sign for the wolf to start leading the way. Who knows what would come occur on their way home? Oh, what arrogant men-folk, to enter the forest with the intent to harm others. BelaLucina I think that's a great plan. Tenzin and Abdiel could handle three, definitely, and then maybe Damian and Dionysus could tackle a fourth hunter. How does that sound?

Going deeper into the forest sounded like a good plan to Abdiel; anything to loose the hunters, though what he really wanted was to give them a good knock in the head with his hooves. He knew he couldn't be rash though. He nodded towards his guide, about to say that he would follow him, when Dionysus arrived on the scene.
"Yes, that owl!" Abdiel answered Tenzin. And then to Dionysus he shouted, "Dionysus, you found me! Now stick close, we're heading deeper into the forest!" Turning his attention towards the gray and red wolf he said to Tenzin, "And I take it this wolf is your familiar?" From the way that Tenzin interacted with the wolf, this was clearly the case.
"Abdiel!" The owl hooted agian, "There are more hunters, and they are headed this way!"
Just then an arrow whizzed close to where they were gathered. The group of them were not easily conspicuous and it was evident that they had been found.
"Damn," Abdiel cursed under his breath. "We need to move!"
Before they could get anywhere though, three hunters surrounded them. Abdiel shouted to Dionysus, "Go! Let us handle this!"
Dionysus started to fly away, following the wolf who was now their guide, when they were cornered by a fourth hunter.
Abdiel looked to Tenzin, "You were right, it has come to a fight after all." Abdiel then picked the nearest hunter, dodged an arrow, and charged forward. The unsuspecting horse whinnied, bucked his rider off, and ran away. Abdiel neighed angrily, approaching the hunter. When he raised his bow Abdiel kicked it out of his hands. His hooves came down hard on the bow and broke it in two.
Dionysus screeched and swooped at the head of the fourth hunter, trying to confuse him and waste his arrows. If he could keep flying in a random fashion, he could surely avoid being hit, while also directing the hunter's attention away from Abdiel, Tenzin, and Damian.

Tenzin and Damian
Tenzin had had few experiences with humans and he wasn't an experienced fighter, but in a case like this, he doubted experience mattered much to anyone. He couldn't see where Damian had gone, but he heard the wolf snarling at a distance away from his own hooves.
"Watch out for my hooves!" Tenzin warned Abdiel over the sounds of arrows and frantic whinnying from the other horses- the humans' horses. Turning to a hunter a few paces away from him, Tenzin let out a ferocious bellow, which seemed to echo off of the trees. He rushed the horse and rider stopped a foot away and reared, massive hooves flailing in front of him.
Furious green eyes glared down at the horse, which had begun to back up in fear of the massive draft, despite the human kicking at its flanks. The pair decided to make a break for it when Tenzin's front hooves came down upon the ground where the tame horse stood on just a second earlier. Tenzin was turning to assist Abdiel when an arrow grazed his shoulder. He let out a cry of alarm, the wound stinging, and wheeled around. He couldn't see his assailant through the dark forest, but then there was a flash of glowing red, a cry of pain, and the sounds two legs retreating.
There was no time for confusion, Tenzin thought, turning back to Abdiel he let out another harsh neigh and thrust himself forward, back into battle. He would not rest until the hunters were gone and the group safe once again.
--------------------------- --------------------- ---------------------
As Tenzin launched himself into action, Damian found himself paralyzed with fear. He had never been this close to even a single human, and now he was surrounded by a whole pack of them! He began to pant anxiously, his eyes darting about as he spotted the outline of his bonded. He let out a low whine dashing into some bushes when he heard the owl familiar screeching.
If he could fight, why couldn't Damian? He tried to creep over to where Dionysus was fighting the human and began to snarl from the bushes, loud and menacing. He wouldn't actually go and put himself in harm's way by doing this right? Right?
His fear was as though he was breathing in the darkness that surrounded them, and he felt his heart clenching in his chest and there wasn't enough air in this stupid ,cramped forest--
Then he heard Tenzin's cry and his own shoulder seemed to flare up in pain. The wolf's head snapped around to the source of the sound. A human had dared hurt his bonded? No, he wouldn't stand for that at all! His eyes lowered to the ground as he began to bristle out of a pure and deadly rage. The red marks, though unknown to Damian, began to glow a hot red, like the burning coals of a new fire.
He turned away from the owl's hunter and began running blindly until he saw a hunter with an arrow pointed towards the large shape that was his bonded. The arrowhead glinted slightly, despite the darkness surrounding them all.
In a silent leap, Damian felt his jaws closing around soft flesh, hot liquid spraying his teeth and muzzle. He had bitten through one of the human's furs and into its arm. The hunter shot off track and into the trunk of a nearby tree. The hunter let out a cry of pain, though it fell on deaf ears. The only reason Damian let go was to go and assist his bonded in chasing off the remaining hunters. Somewhere in the depths of his mind, Damian realized the one he had wounded would not be able to shoot straight with his new wound.
Let's see if anyone dare attack my bonded again. Thought the wolf as he turned around and launched himself back towards the hunter that Dionysus had been fighting, should the owl need his help again.

belloblossom I think this is about over with the hunters. Abdiel cleared away from the large draft stallion's hooves at his warning and watched in admiration as Tenzin bellowed and reared toward his hunter. Hunter and horse retreated, narrowly missing being trampled by massive hooves. Abdiel shouted, "Nice one!" to Tenzin, but not soon after this happened, watched in horror as his companion was now struck with an arrow. Before Abdiel could react, the wolf jumped out of no where and took care of the hunter who had shot Tenzin.
With one hunter horseless and bowless, one retreating, and one with a damaged shooting arm, that only left the one hunter that Dionysus and Damian were now fighting together.
Doinysus, encouraged by the wolf's courage, swooped down upon his hunter and clasped its ear in his break. He tasted blood and felt a hand shoot up to shake him off. The owl flapped his wings and clicked his break menacingly. He tried to grab at the bow with his claws.
Abdiel was about to assist Doinysus, when the retreating hunter came back around. The other two they had been fighting had made a run for it. Abdiel stood his ground next to Tenzin and raised his hooves in warning to the hunter. He would not win this fight. Looking to Tenzin, Abdiel said, "Together?" and prepared to rush the hunter.

Tenzin and Damian
The mighty draft horse swung his head about as he surveyed the scene, only to stop as he spotted Abdiel, the remaining hunter not far from his friend. He gave a nod of agreement and turned his gaze onto the human. He pounded his forelegs against the earth, making the dirt crack and crumble below his weight. A territorial display without a doubt; Tenzin wanted these hunters gone as much as the others did. They had no place in his forest.
"Now!" He neighed to Abdiel and he lurched forward, towards the hunter. He stopped short, not wanting to run into his black and blue companion and let out a fearsome bellow at the hunter. With this and whatever Abdiel had done to spook the man, would surely be enough to cause him to flee. He would be truly foolish not to.
--------------------------- --------------------- ---------------------
While Dionysus attacked the hunter's head, Damian leaped about the hunter, aiming for the pouch that held the arrows on his back. He bit wherever he could, not caring whether it was fabric or flesh that he was biting into. Finally, he had caught the sling that carried the arrows and they fell to the ground. Unarmed and clearly beaten, the hunter fled and Damian was left with a sense of pride.
"We did it!" He barked to the owl, "We've won!" BelaLucina Yes, I agree. Shall Tenzin have them continue on their way to his home, now? :3
