IC
The route from Iory to Dernd was a scenic one; especially in the early morning when the sun is just peeking up over the horizon. The golden hue it casts across the landscape is breathtaking… But Warren couldn’t be bothered with these details. It was early morning and he was on a mission to make it to Dernd to meet Lon, a mysterious blacksmith who keeps to himself, but has an impressive background in a range of weapons; with the right connections you may have a chance to be trained by him.

Warren is lucky to have such connections, and is hoping that his word is enough to gain an audience. Unfortunately, Warren has a history with the town of Dernd, and his arrival hasn’t gone unnoticed. Even if Lon agrees to train Warren, will his Grandfather allow him to stay in the town to train?

Quest Points

|| Warren must seek out Voulon Metals and introduce himself to Lon. Plea his case to Lon and get accepted to study under him.
|| Before training begins they are rudely interrupted by Warren’s family (be it his mother or his grandfather)
|| Lon informs Warren that training cannot proceed until the issues between him and his family is taken care of… If they cannot be resolved, then terms have to be made that Warren will not be disturbed while he is under Lon’s roof.
|| This quest will address Warren’s feelings about his family and make him confront them. We will be looking at Warren’s technique for dealing with his family and how well it is executed.
|| In the end Warren should be able to train with Lon without the harassment of his family.

Warren had set off from his friends house only a few hours ago. Gaddok had inspired him and given him a lead. “Lon’s right in the center of town, kiddy corner to the local tavern. Pretty hard to miss...”
In the center of town; in the center of Dernd. He was looking for a master to apprentice under. Warren was past the typical age for a prentice and was desperate to find a job or trade he could be of use at. His father’s trade, herding aldabuck, was not the fit for him. He had helped his father most his life; he had learned much and could in fact herd and care for aldabuck proficiently. However, Warren and his father knew he was destined for something more. Warren had boundless energy, and was gifted with a fighting spirit. All he needed was a target and the training to efficiently take them down.

Warren was hoping Lon would be the trainer he needed. The fact that he was walking into Dernd to seek Lon out demonstrated just how determined he was.
He stopped on the path right be for a small weathered sign. A wood carved sign hung from a post, etched in it, Dernd. It looked like it hadn't been painted since he was last there. The young man swallowed hard and took a deep breath as he took his next steps into Dernd. Following the light stone path was easy, it lead right to the middle of the settlement. In the center sat a well, surrounded by small shops an inn and the local tavern. Past the tavern he could see the breathing glow of a forge. There were a handful of people outside an all of them had their eyes on Warren. The settlement was small and mostly quiet. The tall lumbering giant with dark dreaded hair standing in the middle of the square, must have been the most fascinating thing they had seen in ages. Warren grimaced and stood up straighter.
He hadn’t been to Derned since he was a child. The folks could hardly recognize him, they must have thought he was alien. Few if any would have been convinced he was half blood of their kin.

Warren returned their stares with an unsettling glare. It sent a child running down the road in fear. Warren couldn't hold back a sinister smile. “These people are so foolish” he thought “They take one look into my eyes and wet themselves in fear.”
He was happy to have spent his childhood traveling with his father, the only person who had loved him unconditionally from day one. He would show them, they would regret casting him out. Warren was here to prove he could make something of himself, to prove his grandfather and this community they were wrong about him.

Warren made his way to the forge. The “Voulon Metals” sign hung just outside the humble building. He made his way up the stairs and walked up to where, who he presumed to be Lon working.

A dusty old man sat at the forge. The embers glow illuminated a grizzled face and beard. There was a seriousness, a fierce focus in the mans eyes. Warren found himself just standing there, staring at the man who could be his training master, in awe. He was afraid to interrupt.

“Well? What are you staring at boy?” Lon’s harsh voice broke the awkward silence. He hadn’t stopped what he was doing, and with his back still to Warren he continued, “Yeh need somethin forged or repaired?”

Warren thought before he replied, “No, I need something else. Gaddok told me you might be able to help.”

Lon dropped the dagger he had been working on in a bucket of water to cool. He turned around on his stool so he could get a look at this ‘friend of Gaddok’.
Lon had to look up farther than anticipated, “The boy keeps tall company” he uttered under his breath. “So how is the fool? I assume he is still recovering from his little adventure.”

“He looks like shite, but he’s recovering” Warren replied.

Lon took a moment to study the young man, he made a groan and twisted his face into a look. Warren kept direct eye contact and remained still. He was unsure of what the old man was thinking or going to say. He didn’t want to offend him because he needed his help.

“Well, what is it Gaddok promised you?”

“I need a mentor, someone to train me so I can become a Guard.”

Lon let out snorted laugh, “Your body looks well trained enough, but let me guess, you don’t know what to do wit’all your wripplin muscles?” he laughed again, “Oh what a burden!”

He was making fun of Warren, but what he was saying was true. He must look foolish; a well built man asking for training from an old one. Lon was probably thinking, why on earth Warren had come to him of all people.
Warren clenched his jaw and let out a long breath.
“I’ll do whatever work you need, anything you ask. I’m strong and can do all your heavy labor.” It was difficult for Warren to submit, and he thought he sounded pathetic.

Lon crossed his arms and closed his eyes for a moment, as if he was contemplating. “Alrigh boy, I’ll help ye’out of yeh do some work for me. But if you prove to be too much trouble the deal’s off.”

Warren nodded, “Thank you, I won’t disappoin-.”

“Good now all this yappin’ has cooled the fire!” Lon said before Warren could completely finish, “There’s an old axe and a woodpile round the shed. Get to work feedin this fire.”

Warren dropped his bag on the bench and made his way to the shed without complaint of even word of acknowledgement. Chopping wood was easy enough for him, with every fall of the axe, he split the wood with ease. When he had a decent enough pile he stacked them up in his arms and carried them over to the forge.

Before he reached the fire, he could hear Lon arguing with someone. Warren’s stomach dropped. He had a bad feeling whatever they were arguing about, it had to do with him.
He made his way around the house to see what was happening. His stomach swirled into a nauseous knot. He was looking at someone he had hoped to not see so soon. The man who had hated Warren more than anyone since birth. His grandfather Nitoh.

“That monster is going to cause this town nothing but trouble!” Nitoh’s voice carried. “He has caused my family enough grief. To keep him here would curse us all!”

“Hey now, I don’t know who you think you are, but this is MY forge and I will not be told what to do!” Lon snapped back, and his voice had a bit more bite.

“He is not some stray to leave milk out for. That thing is a rabid beast waiting to bite.” Nitoh sounded more desperate now.

Warren’s face twisted into a starl. Perhaps he was ready to bite, well bite Nitoh if anyone. In his frustration, he instead threw the firewood he was carrying into the side of the house. The wood crashed and splintered some of the panels. He had not seen Nitoh since he was a child, and since then his hate for his grandfather had only grown and festered. “YOU!” he let out in a deep growl.

Nitoh could hardly react before Warren was on top of him grabbing for his terrified face and neck.
Warrens hands found the wrinkled neck and squeezed like a vice. “This is what you wanted is it not!?!” He shouted. His grandfather’s face grew more crimson by the second.

“Enough!” Lon shouted, but Warren couldn't hear.

He could hear only the rush of blood pumping through his heart and filling his ears. His eyes were wide with rage, fixated on Nitoh’s. Like a predator to its prey.
Warren’s predatory trance was broken when Lon broke a branch over his back. All his air escaped him and he dropped Nitoh as he collapsed to the ground. Warren stayed on the ground as Nitoh gasped and choked on the fresh air. He scrambled away and stood up pointing at Warren.

“Y-you see? *cough* h-h-he tried to kill me! *wheeze* The beast I always knew he was. Lon you are truly endangering this community by keeping your pet.”

“What, in the hells IS THIS ABOUT?!” Lon roared.

“He is the Dread Sermal! look into his eyes, the beast has marked him!”

“Old man, you are a superstitious nut. Boy, you two need to resolve whatever it is if you want any hope of that training. Because THIS is proving to be too much trouble.”

Warren cursed his temper. When he saw Nitoh, after so long, he slipped so easily into a blind rage. He stood up and placed his hand on his forehead, his eyes hurt and were giving him a headache.
Nitoh had stormed off, swearing that he would be back.

“Nitoh, is my grandfather…” Warren explained with a sigh. “I’m a mix and he thinks because of that, I’m cursed, and my eye color justifies his reasoning.”

“Well, can you turn into a sermal?”

“No, but my mother went crazy because of him, and he blames it all on me. She abandoned me and my father because of it… I was hoping he wouldn’t show up until after I had undergone some training. Proven myself as a guard.”

Lon let out a heavy sigh, “Look, I don’t care about all that crazy or any Dread sermawhatever. Just make sure he doesn’t come back to bother me while you’re here.”

For a moment Warren thought, if he killed Nitoh that would solve his problem for good. But to keep the community from chasing him out with pitchforks, he would be sure to leave Nitoh breathing.

While His first instinct would be to break the old man’s neck, Warren knew that wouldn't resolve his issues. He gave himself time to think about it while he repaired the side of Lon’s house where he had broken the panels. He needed this to go well, if he could help it, refrain from touching Nitoh again. He tried to think about how Gaddok might resolve his dilemma. He would be stern but civil, reasonable and just. He closed his eyes and envisioned Gaddok there with him. His best friend, who had given him so much wisdom and guidance already. The thought exercise had calmed him down and he felt like he had a handle on his head again.

He visited Lon by the forge to inform him that he had finished repairing the house and that he was going to resolve things with Nitoh. Or at least he was going to try to. Nitoh was a very stubborn person, perhaps he inherited it from him. The thought made Warren sick, he detest the fact that they are related at all. He sucked it up. These were just distractions and he needed to quiet them so he could continue training.

Warren found his way to Nitoh’s house. He was a little surprised at how well he still remembered where it was. Not much had changed, there were more trees but the area felt mostly the same. Looking up at the front door, Warren felt six all over again. The same old feelings of anxiety, and hate and anticipation washed over him like a warm wind. It even smelt the same. But things were different now. He was grown and strong and wouldn’t be pushed around by him anymore. This time he was setting the conditions.

“Nitoh!” he called to the house. He saw some movement in the house and then heard the crash of a glass or cup breaking. Did he see a flash of long golden hair? He pushed the thought back.
“Nitoh, we have some things to discuss. I’m not here to hurt anyone.” He held his arms out to show he was unarmed. “Just want to talk.”

After what seemed like endless seconds, Nitoh appeared in the doorway.
“You keep your distance! You shouldn’t have come here.”

“If you like we could meet somewhere else, but let us do it quickly.”

Nitoh seemed hesitant. “No, I’ll come down.”

The two of them met at the path. Warren could see Nitoh’s neck had started to bruise, he would have to apologize for that before they could talk about anything else. “Um, about earlier… I want to, apologize for attacking you. I acted without thinking.”

Nitoh looked at him expectantly, “Yes, well that is what wild beasts do.”

Warren clenched his jaw, he wasn’t going to make this easy for him was he. “I came to explain what I am doing back in Dernd. My only objective is to train under Lon so that I may become a guard.”

Nitoh interrupted with a short laugh, “No one would ever want you as a guard. If Lon is smart he will take you out and shoot you like the animal you are.”

Warren couldn't believe what was coming out of Nitoh’s mouth. He got the feeling talking alone might not resolve his issue. He stood up straighter and pulled his hand into a fist. “Now, whether you care or not, I will be remaining in Dernd for as long as my training requires. I will stay on my end of town and keep to myself so long as you keep to yours.” he left a good pause to give Nitoh an intimidating stare. “Do I make myself clear?”

“And if I don’t agree to your terms?”

“I am not unreasonable, but if it comes to it, I may very well have to summon the Dread Sermal himself to wreak my vengeance over you.”

This struck Nitoh pretty hard and his face visibly paled. Warren knew how much he feared the old god spirit. His threat, although empty, had done the trick.

“You may leave now, but I don’t want to see you near this house ever again.”

Warren struggled to hold back a laugh as he made his way to Lon’s. It felt like he was leaving part of his past behind him, like he had closed the cover on a long chapter. Now he was opening up the pages of the next and he could only imagine where the next chapter would lead him.

Lon was sitting by the forge but appeared to be taking a break when Warren came back.
“So, how’d it go?”
“I left him breathing, but he won’t be harassing you anymore.”
Lon simply nodded, “Good! Now get back to work!”
Warren started back to the shed with the biggest smile on his face. For the first time in a long while, he felt good about where he was at and where he was going.
