Normally when it was midnight and Zia was wandering around the big top, it was because she was in one of her zombie-like trances or suffering from insomnia, or both.

Although the trances had ceased with Zirconia's reemergence, which probably came with it's own set of questions she wasn't interested in asking.

Tonight, though, she had jumped out of bed with a sudden epiphany and first, rather than wandering to the Big Top as her MO dictated, she took over Chester's desk and might have even powered up, down, and through various forms as she worked, eventually sitting crosslegged on the surface and intensely fiddling with a small object in her hands.

Zirconia, as a guardian, did not have any technology skills like the Mauvians of this universe. Her world was not technologically advanced and a lot of things like cell phones had been baffling. But she could make magic, and enchant, and so production of magical items was not entirely out of her grasp.

As evidenced by what Zia had made here, and she held it out with pride before she became caught in trying to figure out what to do first, test it, or show it off?

Even if show it off meant wake someone up because it was roughly one in the morning.

Chester saved her some time by padding out of the bedroom area and looking like a grumpy old dog. He was scruffy, usually slicked back hair sticking up and fluffy, no longer tamed by what seemed like pounds of gel.

He looked at Zia with a very decided frown, not happy to be awake right now, as he had a late night the day before that was coupled with an early morning. He had not gotten more than a few hours of sleep and was not particularly eager to start his day before he had ended the last one.

Nothing was said until he dragged himself into the kitchen, got a cup of coffee, and padded miserably back into the main area. He walked up to his desk silently, watching her for a long moment.

He sipped at his cup for a moment before finally remembering language.

"What are you doing?"

Boy he hoped the answer was good.

"It's a little rough, because it's my first try... but I think I successfully enchanted something..." Zia said as she hunched over her gem lens, sounding nearly giddy with pride before she looked up at him and froze. And stared.

The concept of spending the night was still a little weird to her, and she seemed to jump around from being either extremely clingy or extremely guarded with a lot of rules about was or wasn't okay. And then there was now, which was just a long stare before she flushed a new shade of red with a goofy smile and shifted her knees before breaking eye contact.

"I've never seen the scruffy look," She mumbled like a shy, lovestruck teenager who had to muster up the strength to stop ogling and musing on how even sleep deprived and tousled he was perfect.

I am going to vomit if you do not wait until I am asleep before you start thinking about these things. Rang a very irritated voice in her head that made her snap out of it.

She held up the lens proudly instead.

"It should help locate crystal auras."

"Scruffy look is rare," Chester admitted, as his coffee sank in and he felt more like a human being. He smiled at her gently, running a hand through his hair in a feeble effort to tame it, though there was no discernible difference afterwards beyond making himself feel better for trying.

"You enchanted something?"

He moved closer to look at the lens as she presented it to him, tilting his head in wonder. If he had the ability to make things like that, he imagined his job would be a lot easier. Using magic to find things, or... some other sort of improvement or advancement that might make being a knight easier... well, he was not exactly an inventor, so the ideas did not come flooding to him.

His scope tended to be limited to his circus.

"So we'll be able to find those shards with this? That's amazing. You're very clever," he tried not to sound surprise, having learned her potential could be fairly limitless when she wanted to get something done, but he had not known she could enchant things, "we'll just have to figure out where to start looking, then."

"I like it. Well, I mean," Zia gave a blushing, flighty half of a laugh. "I mean I like seeing you... like... um...."

Focus.

She straightened up suddenly, but sank back down with a 'hee' when he moved closer.

But she did get back to the point. "Magic can be a science, but it's not a very exact science," Zia said, biting down on the left half of her lip as she held her lens up to the light for him. "It's difficult for me because I only know how by looking at Zirconia's memories but since she's awake she can at least explain a few things to me. Power up and give it a shot?"

Chester smiled at her, feeling a little bashful now, but he liked the way she was enjoying his look, so he did not complain about the comments or the looks he was getting. He pretended to be focused on the thing she had made, nodding his head slowly.

He knew that some of the ancient cultures used magic as science. His own planet seemed to be very tied into it.

"Oh, so you want me to use it?"

He nodded and put his cup down, powering up. He did not really fear being powered up while in his office/home, as there was very little Negaverse activity in the area now that he had been patrolling it so much.

Luxor reached for the lens, looking at it thoughtfully and then holding it up and looking around. There was a strange, distant glimmer and he pulled the lens down, looking surprised.

"Oh, I think it senses something..."

Zia seemed genuinely surprised that it worked, even if that was the entire point of asking someone to test it.

You didn't totally mess it up. Excellent.

Take the win, Cat.

"It's actually... like...?" She followed the direction he had been looking in when he said it sensed something and stuck her head out a window, craning to see before she powered up and scrambled outside, overlay dragging behind her.

Normally her journeys to the big top where in a subdued state of wandering but this time it was frantic as she kept looking around until she was spinning in circles, trying had to feel something

"Here?" She confirmed, ears swiveling on her head as if she could hear the tiny needle of crystal crying out.

"Well, it's reacting to something. Is it supposed to do that?"

He hoped he hadn't immediately broken it. He knew he had big hands, and was more brawn and grunt work oriented than delicate mirrors and lenses, but he had been trying to be careful with it. He could see she put a lot of effort into it, so the last thing he wanted to do was wreck it.

"Wait, hold on, I can't fit through..." but she was gone. He sighed and moved to leave through the front door rather than the window, since he was a bit too big and his 'skirt' did not lend itself to comfortable window climbing. He hurried to follow her, carrying the lens with him. Once he caught up near the big top, he looked around and then lifted the lens again. The blips were much strong now, and he could follow them toward the source.

"It's here," he said, pointing at a spot where he knew he had seen her come before, just in one of her dazes. Maybe she knew more about the shards than she realized.

It was almost like it didn't make itself visible to her before he pointed it out, but once he did, it was as if it had been there all along.

"Ahhh!" She squealed in delight as she grabbed it and summoned her box to drop it in with the rest. "Yes!"

She didn't seem to put two and two together, that this was the spot she had always been drawn to in her dazes. In fact, the two of them powered in this spot at night was starkly similar to the night they had met, when she had broken into his circus and he had come to investigate.

Now she looked absolutely overjoyed. "One more step in the right direction," She said, balling her hands into fists with an excited pump before she grabbed both sides of his head and stood on her toes to plant a victory kiss on his face. "And then I can separate these starseeds and say good bye."

Maybe a little overexcited, but she was humming to herself as she ambled and spun and counted her shard collection so far.

"You know what really... bothered me, about that future I saw? How obvious it got that I wasn't human. I saw this older, thirty-something guy and his twenty-something wife that was just going to stay twenty-something while he got older and eventually was going to just..." She exhaled and seemed to deflate before she looked at him. "I really can't wait to be human with you. I don't want to be pathetic and cry about never having a family, I want to be able to do it." She froze and flushed, before she went down to playing with her shards. "I mean assuming that's what we wanted in our actual future. Eventually."

Luxor watched her as she skittered to collect the shard, smiling a bit to see her delight with it. He was a little more aware that he often came here to find her, and she could be a bit of a zombie in this area, but he also did not realize she had not thought about it. So he did not say anything, thinking she was as aware of the connection as he was.

One day he would learn how to say the important things that entered his thoughts, at the very least, and not be so quiet all the time. That day was not today, however.

He was quickly distracted by her kiss, anyway, and thought he could get used to the shard hunting if each victory ended with something similar. She had the ability to make him melt, and he loved her for it.

And many other reasons, of course.

At her words he paused, watching her quietly, nodding his head at the end of her sentences, absorbing each one. He put his hands around her, hugging her to him as he usually did when he wanted to be strong for her. His only strength, he thought, was his physical strength, and the most direct method of showing her he was there for her was to hold on to her.

"I want my future to be with you, and if that means we can have a family... I want to do that. And I want the chance to cross that bridge when we get to it, so first I want to make sure you get through all this in one piece."

She was forced to stop ecstatically bouncing around once she felt his arms wrap around her, but the gesture was met with a wistful sigh as she ran her hands up his arms, stopping to brush her lips on his exposed bicep and chest, her fingertips giving special attention to his belts and resting on his faceplate.

She reveled a bit too deeply in his proclaimed identity as 'her' knight, but he probably knew that, from the way she called out for 'Luxor' and not 'Chester' in the wake of nightmares or moments of passion.

"It's stupid," She declared, powering down to what felt like a more honest representation of her real self and smiled a goofy grin, although her face was still flushed. "I guess it's normal people stuff. That people think about when they're almost thirty. I just always swore I wouldn't, because there's no one that could make it worth it. But I think... I would rather be human with you than have all the magic in the world. I can do this, no one's gonna stop me."

She hooked her fingers between the gear plate and the skin of his chest.

"And you are very saintly for being out here in the cold at one in the morning, Sir Knight."

"Is it cold?"

Luxor smiled at her, his soft, gentle smile that only she ever got to see. He watched her for a moment, quiet and thoughtful, before he did shudder against his own will. Now that she mentioned it, it was rather cold out, and his outfit just did not lend itself to... cold. Or sitting down comfortably. Or being accepted in public locations.

"Let's go back to the office, then, and get warmed up."

He said it innocently enough, but of course, his bland delivery of everything he said had a way of taking on a life of its own. He did not have to put any inflection into his words for them to hold their meaning, sometimes, and this one was all things at once.

He did have to glance away though, and cleared his throat innocently as he moved to walk back towards his home away from home, taking her hand in his as he did so. He tugged her along with him gently, feeling relaxed and glad that they had managed to make a little progress.

If finding those shards allowed her to have a normal life with him, he had all the reason in the world to keep helping her, and Zirconia, in accomplishing it.
