She stood against the wind, her wings spread against the cool air that whistled past her feathers, ragged at the very edges but never losing their brilliant ruby sheen. She stood there, head tipped up, crimson eyes looking at the sky filled with clouds, clouds that promised sleet and maybe more, because fall was fading fast like a falling leaf and winter would be upon them.
Winter was beautiful, eerie, empty, cold, haunting. Winter was how she felt, her heart barren like the trees would soon be, stick branches and fragments reaching out for hope, for acceptance, for a brighter future when the past seemed so damn bleak. Maybe that was appropriate for the angeni mare. Maybe she was meant to be alone, to be by herself.
Why, then, did that idea hurt?
A loner by nature, she didn't used to mind it. Duty came before all else, duty to protect those who would too weak, too young to protect themselves. She guarded the innocent, the elderly, the fallen. She was a protector against the evils of the Kawani lands--Kalona and Walker alike--and she would one day die pursuing her duty.
But a gentle heart had started to crack the ice around her heart--a vibrant stallion began to melt her, wear the edges away... She had been fond, very fond of the flutter male. She'd had children with him--children she didn't regret, despite the fact of the possibility that they could be used as pawns against her. She loved Domovoi and Etain with all of her heart.
But love... Love was a funny word, a funny thing. Could she love? Was she capable? Or would she be forever alone. Aleksei closed her eyes and breathed in the crisp air of the forest swaying around her, and a single crystalline tear streaked down her face to blur against her fur.
This was her goodbye. And yet... It was a new beginning. A fresh start. The ball was in her court and it was her move. Now she had to just hurdle that fear and take the first step.

Peska was very smart and noted a lot in any scenery but he didn't need to squint or fidget towards the object moving in this scenery. She was bright, and he would be lying if he didn't admit she was beautiful. The constant red from afar, only giving a surprise of gold jewellery, astonished the large dog. His odd bright eyes wandered over her in the scenery until he noticed her facial reactions in which didn't allow him to be distracted when a leaf broke from the timberline.
Something was unsettling about her being alone, and then he saw her draw in a breath and close her eyes. He had seen Ashanti do this before, his grandmother.. Well sort of grandmother. His stepgrandmother? Whatever. Back to the program Peska. His curiousity pushed him this time, he stepped forward quietly and quickly until he was close enough to see a tear slip down her cheek.
"Madam.. Are you alright?" Peska's voice broke through the silence Aleksei seemed to have for herself. His voice was warm, and definitely newly settled into. It held a deep tone, one that would be rather good for singing. Being this close, when a red leaf fluttered by him he let his eyes only watch it for a second until he snapped back into reality and looked back up at her. At that moment noticing the different textures in her fur, his eyes were in a trance for a mere moment until her cheek's maze lead him back to her eyes. Her body was so red, the leaf had nothing on her tone. She made him think of "Rubies..." He would say out loud and then he'd stutter. "S-Sorry forgive me, continuing from my first question if you were alright..."

Aleksei heard the other coming despite how quiet he was. It was engrained into her just like the fractal patterns weaved through her ruby pelt, to always be aware of your surroundings. To always be aware of danger lurking around the corner. If anything, having a small family--even for a short amount of time--had made her more keen. She'd had to protect her two small foals, and her... Mate. She thought the word with a pang of sadness, but as the other drew closer, her thoughts trailed off.
She stiffened at the sight of him--large and dark and in the shadows, he looked like he could be a walker, or one of their offspring, the way his eyes glowed like fireflies and the thick wolven tail he sported. She narrowed her eyes but didn't move... She was always too quick to judge, too sharp, too...everything. For all she knew, this was a big friendly dog.
Her heartbeat settled at his voice, soft and warm, deep and male. Not a threat, at least... No. Not a threat. He seemed gentle. She watched him with her head tipped to the side ever so slightly, taking in the way he stared at her, as if entranced by the patterning in her fur, almost exactly the way her son Domovoi had done.
She smiled, immediately warming to him--which surprised her. "Madam?" she repeated, lifting an eyebrow in a mild form of jest. Her smile didn't waver. "Sorry, but that makes me sound like an old lady... I'm Aleksei." She bit off her following sentence--protector of the innocent--because...she wasn't quite sure about it.
He stumbled over his words and she stepped closer. "I... I think so," she admitted, slowly working the words. "I'm a bit scattered tonight, thinking about the past, wondering about the future. And yourself?" She flicked her thick tail, the gleam of gold wrapped around it like snakes.

Peska did sense some sort of feeling he wasn't very welcome until she noticed he was a big cuddle bug of a dog and not a skinwalker. He always forgot that the sheepdog family tended to be considered skinwalkers from afar but really only had tails of another animal. But he pushed it back into his mind when he heard her respond to him.
He felt bad because he always called ladies Madam, even little fillies. Or Miss. Or Missus. Smiling though when she said her name. "You don't look very old." He would say kindly to her. She was beautiful to the sheepdog. Her colouration was so shocking, he wasn't used to such a luxurious red in a pelt. He was slowly being caught back into her designs in her pelt that when she said she thought she was ok. Her words drew him back once again and he hummed.
"Future.." He canted his head to the side and hummed a little. "I am doing fine, thinking of the Present though I presume." He said with a smart tone, not the sort to be snarky but it was true. "I presently have no time to think of the Future.. and the past. As much as I wish to think about it.. There is too much going on now for me to really press on things that have already occurred. I suppose.." He would state as a leaf flew between them and up high in the sky, past where Peska could even consider jumping. His face turning up with the wind to watch the leaf dance back upon his snout. With a chuckle. He let the leaf fall back to the ground between his hooves. "It's odd to see an Angeni on the ground though. I have never had a conversation with an Angeni.. Well aside from one who's domain is the forest. But it was when I was quite young." He chuckled. "Here I go. Thinking about the past and missing out on the present." He would pause for a second though. "Oh, uhm. My name is Peska.. Peska Scarecrow."

She watched him, neither coldly nor warmly, rather...just watched his facial expressions, the way his lips formed over words, the furrow and rise of his brow, the way his ears flicked back and forth. Movements he wasn't even aware he was making, no doubt, but she was attuned to them.
She took in a breath, held it a moment, and let it back out again slowly, still smiling as he spoke. "Well thank you," she said when he claimed she didn't look old; though she felt old sometimes. Felt like one of these days, she'd slip up, falter, and her enemies would take her down.
"That makes sense," she agreed with a bob of her head. She was bad at dwelling on the past, which was such a tortured, twisted thing and yet somehow filled with hope, with love entwined with loss. "Living in the present is the smart thing to do, if you ask me. The future is unclear, the past can be painful." That she knew for certain.
She tipped her head in his direction, her bangs falling free from her dark ruby eyes. His eyes seemed to glow gently, like they were lit with fireflies. When he spoke, he...seemed to be somewhere else, watching the little things like leaves--but then, she was too busy watching him. He reminded her of Domovoi...but maybe a little more distracted.
"I'm no different than you--well, besides the fact that I don't have a tail." She offered a wry grin and tipped her head in the other direction, trying to take in all of his facets. "I'm just...another girl with wings, really." If only that was true. "And I have to save my strength; flying nonstop can wear you out quickly, and if you come across a kalona in the sky..." She shook her head. "I hunt on the ground, mostly."
Peska... "Are all of your family canid?"

"You're very welcome." He would pipe up in reply. Flicking his tail behind him to show a sort of tail wag to go with his happiness. Watching her bob her head made him smile, her own movements kept in his mind.. "I guess, I don't have a very painful past." He said sort of like he was dull. Just he wasn't really. He was distracted way to much for a dull life. He always was moving some way. He watched her, watch him while she tipped her head with his own. He chuckled when he hair would flop to its side as his eyes twinkled at her a bit.
When she said she doesn't have a tail he'd chuckle and look at her tail. "You do but it just is more of a standard tail you'd see on a Soquili I suppose." Though this wasn't always the story. His tail would flick back and forth when she talked about it. "I am just another boy with a dog tail." He'd grin back at her with his ears swiveling towards her. He never thought about the idea of being in the sky with a kalona. Not that they were a problem for him. Most Kalona ran away from his family because they think they're skin walkers from time to time. Also Peska and his male predecessors were huge. "Hunt? Do you eat meat?" He'd eyebrow raise in curiousity.
At the last question he hummed a little and thought of his family. "No.. My father's family is Canid. My mother's is mostly made up of Regular Soquili and other standard species." He cleared his throat. "My grandfather Monfulta, or Opi.. would be the oldest generation we really know about. He has a tail much like mine but longer and slimmer.. He also drips shadows.. My grandmother was apparently a pale coloured Cerynei but I have never met her. They broke their mating and went separate ways. My father is also canid and has two canid brothers but I have only met one Uncle. The other went with my grandmother.. My stepgramma is a Cerynei too." He chuckled noticing that his Opi liked Cerynei. "My mother is a Regular like her family.. and hm.." He thought. "I also have an Aunt who's a Canid Soquili but she isn't my blood aunt. And I have a brother who's Canid. His tail's shorter than mine." He would think about Gyrfalcon and look around for a second. "Hm. Odd Gyr seems to not be around for me to introduce to you.." His eyes and face reverted back to her. "Are your family all Angeni? You seem like a full blooded Angeni.."

Aleksei grinned this time, letting her gaze flit down the length of his body, to the very tip of the canine tail that seemed to wag back and forth everyt time he seemed happy... That was cute. Strange, to her, but...cute, definitely. "Be thankful," she said, about the past. "I envy you. Mine is...tangled." She gave a soft huff at the thoughts trying to bombard her, and firmly placing a hoof against the hardened ground, she returned her mind and attention back to the boy with the canid tail.
"Well it suits you," she said, nodding to the slowly wagging, fluffy digit. "Though I'll admit, at first glance you look rather dangerous." She wondered for a moment if he had teeth sharpened to points, or if they were flat like hers. At his meat-eating comment, she laughed out loud. "Oh, no, no. I don't hunt to eat," she said slowly, knowing how he might take that little nugget of information. She was a killer, but not of the crazy kind.
She lifted ruby eyes to his emerald ones and her tone grew solemn. "I don't know my family; they were slaughtered by walkers before I ever came out of my basket..." She'd seen the bloody mess through bleary eyes, through the weavings of her stained basket. "I was then adopted by a herd of pure angeni, so...I suppose that I am pure."
She dropped her gaze, glancing down the line of her back, to the forests behind her, sparse and growing bald for winter with spindly branches. "I've been trained since a filly to hunt the darkness of the world. The kalonas, the skinwalkers, the unjust and black of heart." She met his gaze once more, this time almost warily; afraid he would see her as a monster, when she really wanted him to stay... To talk...
"I'm a warrior. I do my duty, day in and day out. But lately..." She clenched her jaw, hesitating. "I don't know. My duty has cost me a mate, a happy family. It's so damn engrained in me that I can't NOT hunt...but when I hunt, I run the risk of death every time."

Watching her watch him was interesting. She paid such amazing attention and he wondered if this is what he looked like on the other side? Just more calm and less fidgety he supposed. "I am very grateful that my family is quite an amazing group of Soquili.." He would say calmly to her but when she said her's was tangled his ears flattened for a moment.
When she complimented him, his eyes brightened a bit more and he blushed under his thick fur. Oh dear, later he'll be skipping home to find Gyrfalcon and be singing up the den with happiness. She made his day. He wasn't very used to compliments. "Thank you Aleksi." He would say her name warmly with a smile. As he smiled his fangs did show through; yes.. He did have pointed teeth. Obviously they ate meat. But they were able to digest plants too. When she said he looked a bit dangerous he tipped his head. "I have heard that yes.. It is the hardships of having a tail much like the Skinwalkers.. I have yet to really see one though. I have seen a Kalona high tail it away from me due to it.." When she said she didn't hunt to eat he gave way to a smirk. "There would not be anything bad about hunting to eat." He would state and chuckle.
He heard her say her family had been slaughtered by Walkers and he winced. For some reason, his grandfather and parents always flinched when they heard about Walkers. It was true they obviously, as stated before, had given the Scarecrow family an uneasy go at life due to their similarities. Peska had been charged at before because of this. "I'm.. Sorry to hear about that." He looked genuinely upset and nodded a little to her adoption. "My Aunt Cyanide apparently was in the same issue.. Though she doesn't quite remember her history. You would think she was more menacing then me.. She has paws but she is a beautiful Soquili." He'd give her a smile. Cyanide though was definitely troubled and he never put it past her or blamed her.
As she moved so elegantly, he noted her form and way she moved to be like a female he once knew as Anthem. Anthem was just deadly with every movement. Her power in her draft limbs were enticing to watch. He could see that this Soquili was once, or still is, a warrioress in some way. He felt the air of her uncertainty for telling him. His eyes were on her patterns again and dog grew intrigued about his ability to keep his attention so locked onto her. She had only began to speak to him and he felt a presence that she was the one his attention was made to stay on for awhile. "I would never belittle a lady and her entitlement or job. Opi would not sit for it.. I know a few tricks up my sleeve.. I am not all innocent. I am driven to protect things and I watch the things I feel the most duty in protecting... It is the way of the Sheep Dog. The way my grandfather has meant his family to be."
He watched her be so tense and he squinted. He never wanted to see her like that again. He shifted towards her and nosed her neck. "I am sorry. Some jobs are riskier than others I suppose.." Peska spoke gently to her. "If you do not see a happiness within who you are Aleksi.. Maybe it is time to really look at yourself.. and not to your future or your past. One can only change when they look within oneself. That is what Dad has told me.."

The way he said her name, soft and with an air of innocence, warmed the ruby mare's heart. It was people like Peska that made her life worthwhile, to know that she was protecting him, inadvertantly, by destroying the souls of the darkness, the beings that slaughtered and killed with no remorse. That she was keeping Peska and families like his safe to sleep through the night without fear of the monsters in the forests... Though by the size of the canine-tailed stallion alone, she wasn't sure he was in any danger of being attacked.
"Be thankful," she said, when he told her he'd never seen a walker in the flesh. "They are ruthless killers with no souls," she said grimly, her face growing stony with the recollection of the last pack she'd destroyed. Mares, stallion, and their rabid little foals... Though she would never tell someone like Peska that she killed children, despite how they were far from innocent. "Kalona are tricky, but not as evil. Glad to hear that your appearance intimidates them."
At his words, his condolences for her family, she shrugged. "It has been a long time. I was adopted by another herd, trained to become what I am today. I fight every day, to make up for my parents' losses. It's the least I can do." And yet... She dropped her head, taking to pacing along the line of the field, her hooves softly clopping on the hard ground. She listened to him talk, so earnest and young of heart, but protective as well. A fellow protector in spirit. But if he was like her, in his duties, the way of the Sheep Dog as he said, why was he so happy?
He seemed...airy, innocent, light of heart despite things he might've seen. And where he was happy, she was reserved and sorrowful and regretful and...angry, deep down. Angry at herself, at her weakness, at her losses. His next words stopped her cold. She froze, glancing up at him, her crimson eyes meeting his deep green ones. "Do you really believe someone like me could change? Just...like that?" she asked, soft, bitter.

Watching her seethe at the description of a walker, he would nod at her. "Opi's told me.. They were born with that darkness." He would state out loud to Aleksei. He wouldn't be surprised knowing so much about the world that walker colt and fillies were slaughtered by this ruby warrior. "I have met hybrids who are kind. Never a full Kalona to be correct." Shrugging a little. Everyone had a little evil in them. He paused as she questioned his words, though it was a soft tone in her voice it still had a bit of a bitter agony behind them. He would stop at her side and steady his hooves below him. "I don't think it happens instantly, Aleksei. I may be a young sheep dog but I'm not foolish." He urged his opinions out. "I think that peace will take time. But the peace will only come to you if you are the one who truly wants it. It's like quitting a habit. The only time the habit can be quitted is if the one with the habit really wants to." He spoke intelligently to her. He paused in his thoughts and let something small distract him, something on her. A glint of ruby colour or one of her marvelous mazes. "Although things can happen in seconds or minutes. It takes hours, days, months and sometimes years to get ready for that moment." He breathed out. "It is soulfully up to you if you feel the need to change such a large part in your life."
