He'd gone over the mission reports dozens of times, thumbing through them all just to see if he could find anything in their handwriting, their way of presenting information, that would lead to some palpable disorder among at least one of the basket cases on the island. Lex knew they were all crazed, but he needed a lead.

What he got instead were reports of other humans acting strangely, hallucinating and crying and doing all sorts of things that most would not consider at all to be normal. This intrigued the man, and he began to look specifically for details regarding these incidents. He found page after page of reference to FEAR candies, the same treats given to the minipets. The reason they were given out was unclear, the dealers seemingly unlinked. Tyam's clones were apparently involved, as were Halloween kids and a human with a runic knife. All were troubling in one way, but those thoughts were ignored for a greater question: why? Following the why, what purpose did it serve? What exactly did these candies do to humans?

Lex had bound all of said files together with a three hole punch and a few metal rings, put on his best professional shirt and tie (Armani), and waltzed his way over to Doctor's H's office, knocking briefly on the door before entering. It was arrogant of him, even slightly rude, but if Ami could talk so easily and freely to the man then he could as well.

"Doctor, I'm here to request permission for an experiment." Lex stated flatly, no riddles or sass coming from the man today. He'd learned his place long ago. The mission reports were slid onto the desk, towards the man. "I'm sure you're aware of the students worldwide being fed Fear candy. I'd like to investigate."

Glancing up from his book, the doctor gazed at Lex over his reading glasses before returning his attention to the pages. "Investigate is a very general term, Alexei."

Lex cleared his throat, eyes twitching to the skeletal birds in the room. Those things always creeped him out. "Better to ask forgiveness than permission, sir."

H glanced back up at Lex and simply waited expectantly.

An internal sigh, a nod of his head. There was no use trying to keep secrets from the man. Lex resigned to the fact that H would always get what he wanted, regardless of how tight lipped Lex would try to be. "Sorry to waste your time, sir." Lex sighed, sitting opposite of his superior. "I intend to infiltrate a school where strange things have been reported, like all the others in these reports. I'll gain the students' trust over time, using a combination of time spent in class as well as younger Hunters posing as fellow students. Eventually, I'll ask them to help me with some research - at which point I will administer a controlled amount of Fear Candy to them, and record the results." The man explained, reclining back once he'd finished. "I'll need Fear candies, of course - and permission to recruit other Hunters."

"So you're going to become a high school drug dealer...for science?" The doctor looked at Lex thoughtfully, blinked once, and then returned to his book. "See that your presence isn't connected to any on-campus deaths."

Lex did flinch a little at the bluntness of the statement, but couldn't argue with the Doctor. It was for the greater good, he told himself. "Thank you, sir." Lex stood, taking his files with him.

He stopped before exiting the door, not looking at the older man."Sir... I appreciate the opportunities you've given me lately."

And he was out.

A cool wave of relief washed over the intermediate trainee as the door to his superior's office closed, though in the back of his mind Lex could still feel the Doctor's eyes nonchalantly boring a hole of mild disinterest through his sternum. He had approval for the project, but should he fail - should he be tied to any deaths - all his chips were gone, and Lex would be back to a library peon.

Lex needed to find capable Hunters to assist with his pet project, and ones who wouldn't bat an eye at the fact that they'd be giving teenagers a controlled substance. Shrew, dependable Hunters. He knew of a few - Ripley, though the man was always getting himself hurt - not to mention one of the reports that had sparked Lex's interest was written by the man, and Oliver. Oliver wasn't shrew, per se, but he would do whatever asked. The boy would blend well with the student population, build up trust towards the "teachers." He would contact them privately.

The next resentful step of recruiting was turning to Twitter. Lex was mildly disgusted with the site most of the time, but it was an unfortunately necessary tool.; 140 characters and a low of frowning later, the message had been relayed to the Hunter populace. He could only hope his rank didn't keep others from being his assistants.

Lex returned to the cottage and began writing out his plan of action, taking up the entire kitchen table with notepads and text books, pencils and pens and mugs of coffee, glasses of water and haphazard bowls of fruit and yogurt. He started by outlining costs and necessities of the trip - hotel rooms, food, school supplies. They'd need student I.D.'s and substitute permits, possibly even new clothes, or uniforms depending on the school they'd be sent to. He needed to submit requests to the labs for FEAR candies in different doses, write out a questionnaire for testing students before and after the applied dosage. Lex spent all night writing out all sorts of things, drawing diagrams, and passing out in the chair after filling an entire notepad.

This was going to be his breakthrough, finally he'd be useful to the island.

---

Doubtful. A voice whispered, black ooze materializing in upward bound droplets in a blatant violation to the laws of physics. A figure that looked much like Mr. Jamil with a gaping hole in its chest and spiraling horns on its head came to be, moonlight yellow eyes glaring at the Hunter's throat, the target of Xel's still dripping claw tipped hand. You will never be useful to anyone - you are a nothing, not even a burden. You are a speck of lint that is swept away by a passing foot without notice. It rakishly cooed, squeezing the red flesh of Lex's throat tightly. You hardly even matter to the girl. She'd rather play with her demons and read her books than spend time with you.

---

He woke in a cold sweat, panting and sticky with spilled coffee an yogurt. The kitchen floor was a wasteland of brown and pale white, miscellaneous papers dotting the flat landscape. Lex looked to the table, saw his yellow notepad intact, and sighed in minor relief. One thing that hadn't gone wrong. He groaned next, scratching at his chest and staring at the mess his night terror had caused. Hopefully Ami wasn't home yet...
