The conversation with the mare who had called herself Jessamine weighed heavily on his mind as he made his way back to Ailbhe. He knew this wasn't exactly how they had planned to have kittens...but well she would be happy.
Arriving back at their cave, he nudged the basket forward to her and nuzzled her gently. He had much to tell her about his conversation with Jessamine, about what they were about to get into. He knew she would tackle it willingly and ardently. He knew how it was to grow up with the appetite for blood. Few but Ailbhe had not looked at him strange.
Ailbhe was what had convinced him that he could be good again. If anyone could be this child's saving grace, it was her.

Ail had just come home from a walk in the area around their new cave, mostly gathering things with which to spruce it up. Ferns, leaves, and bracken already covered the hard stone floor, but she was in favor of things being as cozy and comfortable as possible. After all, she wanted things to be nice when they had kittens. She nosed the new greenery into place, pushing things around to form more densely cushioned spots.
Ail shivered slightly. Winter was mostly over, but periodic snows still fell, and the nights were still frosty. Even with her cloak and the promise of snuggles with Karl, as well as the bedding of greenery, things could still be warmer here.
She was distracted from her thoughts by the sound of approaching hoofbeats. Ail lifted her head, flicking her feline ears before turning her head to see her beloved mate Karl with...a basket. She squinted, eyeing it. Not theirs, and Ail did not want to believe that Karl could be so faithless as to have kittens with someone else and bring them into the home they'd built together. Well, at least it didn't really look much like Karl. Different, rosier shade of red, and white, well, he had white to his fur coverings, mane, tail, and hooves, not to his actual coat. A foundling, perhaps? A kitten or normal foal to raise as their own? Well, even if it was normal, it would still be raised as theirs, right?
Ail nuzzled Karl back. "Where did you find the basket? What happened to its parents?" She really, really hoped that it wasn't Karl's, and that it was just a basket in need of a good home.
