Jack missed his headphones a little, but he could get them replaced next month when his paycheck came in and his hours got replenished. Besides, Barbara didn't get to see the light of day very often. She was a lady who liked to have an air of mystery after all, and it was time for her to shine.
So the next time he found himself with forty minutes of free time before lunch and then his lighthouse shift, the Lifer got his guitar and went to outside to relax. He'd had enough of his room for now.
It was starting to get a little cooler on the island, thank God. He tugged his beanie down as a breeze teased through his coat. It wasn't a New York busking feel this time: more like douchebag playing loudly out on the college lawns—equally as fun to him, even though the only people he spotted were off in the distance sparring.
Settling on the grass with his back to the sun, he slipped the case off and pulled Barbara out. After a quick tuning, he let his fingers mindlessly pluck the intro and then melody of "Kashmir" as he hummed along, trying to remember the words.

Momo had spent most of her day slacking off. Well, slacking off from Hunter stuff really. Fixing up her drab room wasn't slacking off to her. But now she needed a bit of fresh air. So she slipped on her Misfits hoodie and decided to head outside for a bit. Letting her boots take here wherever. There was no particular place that she had taken an interest in exploring at that present time. As a breeze passed her by, she flipped the hood up on her jacket and slipped her hands into the front pockets. As she walked, she hummed. Tapping out random guitar finger placements out on her studded belt through the cloth of her jacket. The sound of a guitar thought caught her attention and snapped her out of whatever thoughts she had dived into in her head. Stopping for a second, she looked about for the source of the guitar music. Violet eyes finally landing a rather tall looking guy sitting off by himself. Though for a second in the back of her mind she got this serious douchy college guy feel. But hey, if he could play guitar she might as well investigate. "That's a pretty lady you got there. You a fan of Zeppelin?"

His eyes closed somewhere in the middle of a riff. Only one opened when he heard someone approach, looking her over from head to toe and pausing on the appropriate places. Piercings, shaved 'do, dyed hair, skull hoodie. A mixture of 'shrug worthy' were it not for the respect paid to his lady. His other eye opened and he stopped strumming for a moment.
"Damn right she is. Looking to make a request?" Jack asked as he popped a knuckle.

She had to admit she was kind of jealous of his guitar. That and she missed fiddling around on one. It made it a bit harder to write songs without having any means to add a tune to it. Maybe once her first paycheck went through she'd take some time off island and go scope out for a new guitar. Her old one had been left behind during the transition from real world to Deus. Without an invitation, Momo plopped herself down in the grass in front of him. Leaning her elbows on her knees. "You know any Dead Kennedys or Iggy and the Stooges? Distillers?"

"Dead Kennedys? Stooges? Shiiiit, that's a little old school," Jack said with a chuckle. "Is Iggy Pop seriously still taking his shirt off at concerts? Do they still do concerts? He's ******** 70 by now, isn't he?"
He considered his guitar as if they were having a silent conversation for a few moments, then pressed some of the strings against the frets. "I've listened to them before, but it's been a while. Wouldn't do them justice trying to pick my way through a song right now. I sort of remember 'Drain the Blood' by Distillers, but only because I downloaded it to Rock Band for a bit and got interested enough to look up the actual chord progressions." Jack shrugged. "You know that one? Or I can do Beatles. Everyone loves the Beatles. Got their Rock Band version too. Damn, I miss those games..."

"Nothing wrong with old school. If its good it holds up." She grinned. "Of course he still takes his shirt off and yes they still tour. s**t, Betty White is in her 90s and she still acts." Not that Momo had a Golden Girls obsession, no. She slipped her hands back into the pockets of her hoodie, leaning back just a bit as she considered the sky visually for a moment. "Holy s**t, if that's the only song you know you are seriously deprived." She couldn't help but grin when he spoke of the Rock Band game. Momo had played it quite a bit herself, it was a really fun game. But there had been quite a few times where she had gotten in arguments with dudes who played and thought they could instantly play the guitar afterwards. "Beatles is more old school than Iggy. Though I'm glad you didn't suggest the Eagles." She looked back at him with a grin. "They sure were fun games. Though they were detrimental in creating a whole group of douche bags who thought they could play guitar just because they got high scores in the game."

"Wow, still? That's one hell of a lady. But at least she doesn't take her top off while she does," Jack retorted with a bark of laughter. "Never said anything was wrong with old school, though. I just don't normally hear answers like that." Then again he should have been more open to the idea; Chel also shared a love of classic rock with him after all. He heaved a nostalgic sigh. "Anyone who thinks a plastic controller can teach them how to play is a grade A moron anyway. It happens. Just makes it fun when you put them in their place," he added with a grin in return. "I had a friend who was convinced he could be our drummer after logging, s**t I don't know, a hundred hours on the damn game. I recorded the train wreck for posterity; he never lived it down." Cue a small, fond cackle and a victorious C chord. "So who do I have the opportunity to disappoint with my less than stellar impromptu concert skills on this fine day?" Jack asked.

Momo laughed. "I'm sure if you asked her to she wouldn't have any qualms about it." She shook her head. "Yea well, some people just don't know good music these days.""Wow, really? I would've payed for tickets to see that live and in person." It wouldn't have been the first time she'd seen that kind of thing, but Momo certainly did enjoy them. Especially when they failed epicly. "Hey, you're better than most people I'm sure." Most people. Until she heard him actually play all legit like she couldn't really make a big judgement of his skills. "Makes me miss my band."Ah right. Introductions. Momo was bad about that half the time. She'd go off chit chatting before even giving the other her name. "Mo Hayashi. And you?"

His grin turned into a smirk momentarily. Better than most people indeed."Mo, huh? Jack Hawthorn," he said as he offered a hand to shake. "Former lead guitar and sometimes vocalist for the cover band The Ketones, later renamed Dead Men Stalking, then later renamed Murmurder which was a b***h to say with a straight face, and then finally renamed Double Cross, which had an X where Cross was so that caused some confusion for people not in the know. Current Life Division coffee addict a*****e." He patted the guitar. "This is Barbara. She's a classy lady if you're good to her." Jack sat back. "So, you had a band too?"

"Yea, Mo." Only her close friends were allowed to call her Momo. Taking his hand, she gave it a shake before slipping her hand back into the pockets of her hoodie. "Former lead guitar and full time vocalist of Screaming Witch. Mist Division."She eyed Barbra briefly, she was a beauty. "I'm going to have to get myself a new guitar next time I get payed. Wasn't able to bring it along." Momo nodded. "Yea, Screaming Witch. Hardcore punk, but I can appreciate other genres of music too. That's just what we specifically specialized in. Mainly original songs, though we covered a couple here and there. Didn't make it very far sad to say, it had promise. I don't think our music even made it out of the Chicago underground." Momo gave a whistful sigh. "But s**t went down at a bar one night and plans changed." The girl gave a slight shrug. Didn't really effect her. There were always other bands.

"Chicago?" His eyes drifted up as he went through his memory. "I was at the university there before I got scoped. Sometimes checked out the battle of the bands, venues, all that. I can't remember if I saw Screaming Witch around...Small world. Not surprised it's hardcore punk, though," he said with a wry smile. "You look the part. Or scream it, to be more appropriate." He started to pluck Iron & Wine's cover of "Such Great Heights"—easy on the ears, slow, and didn't require a lot of concentration, though his eyes drifted to Barbara to watch the frets. Not everything in his repertoire was strictly rock or a subgenre of it. "Got into a civil dispute with the band?" Jack asked. "Those can get as bad as family fights, I know."

"Yea its where I grew up." She couldn't help the grin. Momo was pretty prideful about her looks. It took a lot of soul searching to perfect it, at least by her standards. But once she had stopped giving a ******** about what people thought it was easy enough. Shaking her head, Momo pulled her hood down. Pulling out the long pony tail length of teal colored hair that had begun to make her feel a bit too warm. "No dude, the bar burned to the ground. One of my band mates died and the other two refused to continue on with the band. So we broke up and a few months later Deus approached me. I figured it was time for a change in my life." The death of their band mate had taken a tole on all of them. Momo for the most part had dealt the best with it to say the least. They had all been pretty close.

"That was definitely going to be my second guess: bar burned down. Hate when that happens."
He didn't sound particularly sympathetic to the story or feel a need to be; after all, Mo had shrugged it off herself. A burning building seemed so mundane after what he had gone through anyway, he couldn't bother faking caring about what happened to complete strangers.
"How's it been working out since then?" he asked, another sundry question with predictable answers. Nobody he knew at Deus honestly liked it. "Mist division can get tough. I have a buddy there, says he has to pingpong around the divisions and keep up to date with everything."

She narrowed her eyes slightly at him. Barely noticeable but it was there. He was being sarcastic at least it seemed like it. Not that she cared if he cared. She wasn't looking for sympathies anyway. That part of her life was over and she couldn't care less. "It seems pretty dull to me." Death, maiming, Momo wasn't scared of that. It was the boredom that would probably kill her. "How long have you been here?"

Jack snorted. "Dull means you're not doing it right, that's all I'm saying; there's plenty to do. Anyway, I've been here..." His picking slowed as he did the math. "A year and a month. Hah! Thirteen months," he declared with a little more pep, amused. "Celebrating a birthday on the thirteenth month I haven't died, now that's ******** cool. So, been on any mission yet? Or do I need to get you Febreeze for that very fresh from the pods smell?"
