The first few lines on the duty roster read:

  • LOCATION: JUNGLE OUTPOST
  • TIME: 0900 HRS - 1200 HRS.

  • MEET AT ENTRANCE AT 0845 HRS

A few lines below that it said, in a neat type:

  • BONES, CHANCE V.
  • MILLER, LESLIE

Chance read the name once and then once more, eyebrows drawing together, letting out a hum of thoughtfulness. Ever since Abbi had mentioned having a best friend by the same name - a vaguely familiar name - he'd been interested in trying to figure out if it was someone he knew, though he couldn't place it.

Now, however, it seemed as though fate had brought him an opportune moment for him to take advantage of.

So at the required time, Chance could be found at the indicated spot, dressed comfortably, along with his hunter coat, leaning against a nearby tree and looking relatively at ease.

I HAVE NO IDEA WHERE THEY'RE SUPPOSED TO MEET SO I JUST SORTA WINGED IT

Even if it was warm outside, Leslie always bundled him. Aleria protected him from the heat maybe a little bit too much for his liking. Even still, he was likely familiar enough to what he used to look like: a ragged flop of mohawk, a diminutive and defensive stature, a spattering of moles, a cigarette between his lips and a sour disposition.

He tromped past his duty partner, slamming the door both open and then closed behind him, irritated at anything before 10 AM. At the earliest.

At least he hadn't been late.

Under one arm was a copy of Watership Down, only a few pages in. Whenever his partner entered, Leslie offered him a sneer and no other greeting.

The sound of heavy footsteps alerted Chance to the arrival of his duty partner, and he glanced up, a few stray curls falling across his forehead in black slashes. The figure that appeared was slight, several inches shorter than Chance, apparently due to a rather large chip on his shoulder that was causing this lack of height, if the scowl on his face was any indication.

There was a small moment in which aha would have been appropriate to say, but that Chance merely thought inside of his head, Asher letting out a low hum that reverberated pleasantly through his thoughts.

"Leslie, is it?" said Chance with a trace of amusement. He didn't bother offering his hand for a shake, but instead gestured towards their destination.

"I'm Chance. Ready to head out?"

"Yep," Leslie said, blowing cigarette not quite in Chance's face, but definitely in his direction. "We not in this building, then?" They were already in one building; but he hadn't really done Jungle enough to know if there was another one or not.

But, either way, he was ready to go, and gestured for Chance to lead the way. The heat was oppressive, even if it was already October.

"Jesus s**t, it is way too ******** humid. Why don't tropical islands have seasons." He was, at his core...

A complainer. A loud one.

His lips quirked upwards, almost a real smile. "Just over here," he said, leading the way down the hall. Truth be told, he was mostly just winging it, and except for the fact that they were supposed to be in a jungle outpost monitoring for signs of activity, Chance knew about as much as Leslie did.

"Because it's an island that's close to the equator," he answered mildly, though he knew that this had obviously been a rhetorical question.

Five minutes later, and he was somewhat regretting his choice of clothing, Chance pulling off his hat to reveal damp, black curls which he then ran his fingers through absently, tousling them as he slid a sideways gaze in the other's direction.

"How long have you been here?"

Leslie followed, dragging his feet a little.

"s**t, uh. Close to a year now or some s**t. You?"

The heat was oppressive, but nothing unbearable. It was just the stickiness that drove him crazy; it made his many layers stick to his skin in ways that weren't pleasant.

"Used to be tigers and s**t in here, you know that?" Leslie gestured at the lush overgrowth all around. "Dunno if the ******** still are, but that's the word."

His eyebrows rose, Chance letting out a little hum of thoughtfulness. "A little over a month," he answered, and turned his head, flashing Leslie a smile over his shoulder. Unknowingly, his weapon was of a similar kind; while the heat was sweltering, it wasn't unbearable, Asher providing a strange and reassuring sense of coolness beneath the humidity.

"Tigers?" Chance repeated. "Here?"

His eyes traced the leaves and the thick foliage, and then said mildly, "What would you do if you ran into one of them?"

"Brand new out of the box, huh? You look like it." Leslie grimaced at the smile.

"Yeah, tigers. This place used to be foggy and s**t, and covered in monsters or whatever. Now they're just in the basement and towns, i think."

He squinted at the guy, who looked. A little familiar, it was kind of weird. Either way, Leslie snorted at the question. "What else would you ******** do? Summon your weapon and clobber them. You got one for a reason, s**t."

He'd actually heard that before, about how the island had been foggy and covered and monsters; but Chance let Leslie speak, because he seemed to the type to like to listen to his own voice, and it was beneficial to Chance anyway.

"Right," he said, still smiling, as he tapped his fingers against the side of his leg absently. "My mistake, I completely forgot I had a weapon."

Asher made a soft noise of amusement in his head. Chance slowed his steps as they reached their destination, his eyes scanning around the location. Another low hum of thought escaped him, and he didn't look back at Leslie, as he said mildly,

"I see you haven't changed at all."

Quite the opposite: Leslie liked bitching, but offering information up was a pretty new endeavor. All part of not being quite such a piece of s**t.

Well. Trying to, anyway.

It was a work in progress, okay.

Leslie stopped at the words, squinting at Chance again, racking his brain to try and put a name to the face. "Do I ******** know you, then?"

His hair was sticking damply to his forehead; the humidity was really very unpleasant. Chance ran a hand through the black curls and slowly turned around to face Leslie, absently tugging at a dark strand of hair as he tried to untangle it.

"I don't know if you remember me, seeing as how all you did when we met was wreak havoc," he said mildly. "I remember you, though. You came into my bookstore in Detroit a few times a few years back - it was a little place by the name of Running John's, if that helps you at all."

Leslie still laughed the same: too loud, a bit mean, and ugly.

"Jesus christ, that shitty place? What did you do to get away from it, burn it down I hope? That place sucked."

His gaze slowly moved towards the shorter man, Chance's expression remaining calm and unaffected, though a muscle in his jaw flexed, just a little, barely discernible.

"I worked there for a few years," he said mildly. "I only left because I came here." Chance shrugged, flashing a smile at Leslie. "But who would have thought I would have run into the obnoxious little kid that used to try and trash my bookstore all the way here on Deus Ex Machina?"

"Yeah, and who'd thought this obnoxious kid would ********' outrank you, too?"

(Certainly not Leslie. Success was a constant, startling surprise, one that he kept remembering at random moments.)

Leslie settled into one of the outpost's chairs, feet kicked up on the table. "To be fair, your bookstore kinna deserved to be trashed."

Chance's expression was one of vague amusement as he said dryly, "That might have something to do with the fact that you've been here almost a year longer than I have and less a reflection on my abilities as a hunter."

He took a seat in his own chair, leaning back and crossing one leg over the other, folding his hands together over his stomach.

"So says you," said Chance, with a roll of his eyes. "Although people who can actually read usually like bookstores, which might explain why you didn't like it. Either that or maybe you just have a penchant for causing trouble."
