It wasn't often that Avalon traveled into the city but with the weather cooling he did need to stock up on a few provisions for his den. Not things like food and water those were simple enough to get in the forest on his own. His supplies were more along the lines of new books to keep him company on stormy nights. Besides the city had it's own charm and was very lively.

Manju's eyes sparkled with simple joy as she walked slowly down the street, taking in the sights around her. They might have seemed highly commonplace to those who lived there, but to a girl who came from a village with only around 50 inhabitants at most, even a small town seemed huge to her. Cities simply boggled the brain, and it had taken her a few days just to calm down from the sheer overload of things to look at.
The sun beaming down was warm, but the wind held a bit of a bite to it. No one seemed to pay much mind to the puffs of white coming from Manju's mouth, or the slight coating of frost that marked her steps. Those were torn away by wind and sun almost as soon as they were made.
She looked in the windows of several stores as she walked along, but didn't feel the inclination to go inside any of the stores just yet. Mostly it was just fun to see all the new things that never seemed to run out no matter how often she looked. In fact the only thing she could have wanted was to have someone at her side to share the day with, but her village was far away and she didn't know anyone here. There had been a couple friends she'd made in other towns or in the various forests she'd traversed through, but they were all far away.
Just as she finished that thought, a strangely familiar head of snowy white fur bobbed along in the flow of the crowd heading towards her. She stopped and stared, wondering if it was just fanciful thinking. Then a huge smile crossed her face.
"Avalon," Manju cried out happily, ignoring the stares and moving forward to greet the male she'd met in a forest not too far from here. It seemed like ages since she'd last seen him!

Avalon had been walking along and window shopping when he heard his name called. He turned curiously and blinked in a bit of shock to see Manju racing towards him through the crowded street. He soon smiled and moved to meet her, "Miss Manju? It has been a while. How are you?" He was happily surprised to see the pale female.

"I'm doing great!"
She skidded to a halt just short of crashing into Avalon, and treated him to an enthusiastic hug, forgetting the personal boundaries which she herself largely lacked. Though the weather was still pleasant her touch was as cold as though they were standing in early winter weather. "Gosh, it really has been a while! What are you doing here? Did you leave the forest?" Avalon hadn't given her the impression of someone who liked living in crowded places. She didn't think that would have changed so suddenly, but you never knew.

Avalon chuckled as he hugged her back. It still surprised him a bit how cold she was. "I am in town picking up some books for the winter. I still live in the forest. What brings you back to this area?" He moved them over to a sitting area so that they weren't in the middle of the walkways.

"Well I never really left," Manju explained as she sank down on one of the benches Avalon had steered them to. "Once I got out of the forest I ran into this one little town. Nothing like this place, it was a lot smaller and much more quiet. Much closer to the forest, even had a ton of big trees. It was nice and I stayed there for a bit, but then I decided to move on. Followed the general direction of the forest, heading west, and ran into this city. There was so much to explore that I'm still not done!"
She tossed back her head and laughed cheerfully before looking back at Avalon, flicking lavender bangs out of her eyes. "I'm still not sure if I'm wintering here or not. There's lots of cool things here, but the people don't seem to know how to deal with cold all that well." She hadn't wintered in such a big place so she wasn't sure how this city in particular handled winter, but last year she'd been near a small town. The people there had been doing all sorts of reckless things while sleek ice coated the ground. She was sure she'd be more likely to get killed by someone doing something dumb than by exposure to cold. Winters weren't too bad in this land anyway. Even the weather now felt warm.

Avalon smiled as he listened to her, "I know that town I usually take my business there but the city has a better selection of books..." He chuckled at the female's enthusiasm, it was nice to see someone as good natured as Manju. "You sound like you have been having a grand time. I'm glad for that. I bet the winter's here are a lot less than the ones you have known, but I've always liked the winter months more."

Books. Yet another delightfully strange thing this world held that she had not come across until she left her village. She was used to the idea that a story was passed down through generations by mouth. The thought that these stories could be recorded so that even if all who knew of the story passed on without telling it someone else could find it later was amazing to her. She could look at books for hours, and had done so, but sadly she couldn't unlock the meaning of them.
"Well the cold never affected me that much anyway, not even back in my village." She leaned forward and tilted her head to the side so she could still see Avalon's face, expression full of curiosity. "Do you keep books out in the forest? How do you keep them from getting all wet or dirty?" That was one downside to books, how fragile they could be.(( Just a bit of info, Manju can't read lol ))

"Yes, I keep books in my home. I put them on a shelf off of the ground. If you like I can give you a book to read while you travel." Avalon didn't know that Manju couldn't read and was just trying to be friendly. Books were something that kept him occupied and brought him some peace.

Manju's face was a mixture of delighted and disappointed. "I'd love to have a book! But I don't have anywhere safe to keep it, so it might get ruined." Of course she could freeze rain as it fell and her cold would keep the air around her dry, but it was tiring keeping up her powers all the time. Eventually something would happen to the book, whether it be damp, dirt, or critters.
She sighed regretfully. "I don't know how to learn the stories from them anyway. I've been in a few shops that had people reading them aloud, but there's usually lots of kids around and the adults give me funny looks if I try to sit with them."

Avalon slowly nodded, "I see, I am sorry that they look at you oddly. Most around here assume that adults can read." He smiled softly, "If you like I can give you something simple and teach how to recognized the words. I think I might have a spare pack for you as well."

Manju beamed, bouncing a little in place on her seat. "Would you really? That would be amazing! I've never tried to read before, so I don't know if I'd be any good at it." She wasn't sure how difficult learning to read actually was. On one hand looking at those pages full of strange symbols had been very daunting. On the other hand, she'd witnessed small children being able to read those symbols. Of course children picked things up pretty fast, but it couldn't be too terribly complicated, she hoped!

Avalon smiled softly and nodded at the girl, "Of course I will. Reading is a real joy of mine, I would be glad to pass it on. It won't be all that much considering it would be a small children's book, but it will be a start." He smiled and began to rummage through his back to see if he had picked up something that would work.

Manju bounced in place, barely able to contain her excitement as she watched Avalon looking through his bag. She really hoped reading was something she was good at. She'd be able to learn and understand so much more! She was so excited that she didn't watch her control as closely as she should have. The air around them became noticeably colder, breath coming out as a fog.

Avalon smiled as he produced the small book with pictures. His tail flicked at the change in temperature but otherwise he seemed unfazed. "I think this book will do nicely, Manju, it should be simple enough to start with.
