The tawny male felt he'd been active and supportive of his pride lately. There had been numerous challengers he'd tested, and he'd been spending quite a bit of time out on vikings. Bousvor had brought back, he thought, decent loot from each trip out. All in all, he thought he'd been a valuable member of the pride.

Now, surprisingly he'd received a summons to see the warlord. Bousvor couldn't imagine why he was being summoned. He thought back to his thrall's rude behavior earlier. Had the priestess complained? Was the warlord going to order him to get his thrall under paw? He sighed softly as he presented himself outside the warlord's den.

"Bousvor reporting as ordered."

User ImageThis was new for Ruzski, summoning a reaver and telling him that in the eyes of the pride he had proven himself worth of holding a captain's rank. But Ru remembered his own summons, and the ceremony involved, the words Aesir had spoken, the words he had spoken. And the lawspeaker, present and observing for the history of the pride. Ru had to resist the urge to look over at his lawspeaker, who had spent an hour or so coaching Ru earlier that day, just in case Ru didn't remember everything that had passed before.

"He's coming," Tomi observed, at which Ru nodded. He, too, could see the tawny reaver approaching his den.

"Bousvor," Ru greeted the reaver before falling silent for a moment to give him time to observe that there was a lawspeaker present, too. The promotion wouldn't take place there, but it was apparently something of a tradition to let reavers being promoted in this way stew a bit by leaving them uncertain for a while. It wasn't kind, maybe, but it made the event more memorable. Or maybe Tomi just liked to screw with reavers, since he was the one who had let Ru know about the tradition.

"Walk with me," he said. It wasn't really a request. "And pay no mind to Tuomas. He's just here as an official witness."

Bousvor covered his surprise well as he caught sight of a lawspeaker hanging in the back. Whatever was happening here was serious for a lawspeaker to be involved. Other than his thrall speaking out, he couldn't figure he'd done anything that required a lawspeaker to step in. Even then, thralls spoke out of turn before, so it didn't quite make sense now. He dipped his head to both Ruzski and Tomi in greeting as he waited for the warlord to say why he'd been summoned.

"Yessir," he rumbled quietly at the order to accompany the warlord and ignore the other lion. Well if that's what he wanted, he could do that. Bousvor was still mystified as he turned to follow behind the Ruzski's shoulder. He did his best not to glance back at the lawspeaker, and kept it to only a few times. Official witness, something tickled the back of his mind. What was it again that needed a witness?

There was a moment, albeit an incredibly brief one, where Bousvor was forced to hide his surprise at seeing Tomi, and at once Ru grasped why warlords went through any sort of pageantry when promoting reavers to captains, rather than just saying, "You're a captain now. Don't embarrass yourself." This way was so much more fun. If this was a tradition Tomi had made up for his own amusement, Ru fully intended to see that it remained in place.

"I've been hearing about you and your doings from a number of people in the pride," Ru began as he started walking in the direction of the cliffs. He had never really cared for the cliffs. Heights did funny things to his head. But it was a good place for this sort of thing, and more easily reached than the circle of stones where he had received his promotion. Tomi assured him the location really didn't matter, as long as it was impressive and memorable.

"It's given me cause for thought. Particularly the reports on how you've performed while a-viking, though I hear about other things as well." Which was true enough, although he would have had no idea what anyone was talking about if they mentioned Bousvor's thrall speaking out of turn. Ruzski didn't keep thralls and he didn't care what others' thralls did, as long as they didn't make trouble.

As they got close enough to the cliffs that the air became noticeably more moist, Ruzski had to turn his head so that he could smirk without being seen before he continued, "So it seems I'm going to have to do something and make an example of you."

The tawny male focused his ears on the warlord. There were many questions running around inside his head right then, but none he would ask. What exactly had been said? Or more accurately, what had he been hearing? Maybe it'd be good to send his thrall out to listen to the pride for a day or two. See if she was ready to resume the place she'd lost.

"I hope it all hasn't been bad sir." He tried to give a little bit of humor. Without knowing why he was here it was difficult to tell if he should be serious or more relaxed. Bousvor noted the direction they were taking would lead to the cliffs. Not a bad place over all.

He nodded his head. Obviously Ruzski would hear about those as he received a cut of the loot. As the leader, he'd need to keep tabs on the workings of the pride in general too. At the ominous words, he hesitated. Had he really done something terribly wrong after all? Bousvor hung back a bit. Realizing that being near the cliffs may not be such a good thing now.

"May I ask what it is I have done that needs an example Warlord?" The safest option was asking for clarification. If he could find out what the warlord was thinking, perhaps he could explain his actions that had caused offense or clarify a misunderstanding.

Ru met Bousvor's attempt at levity with a flat stare that was absolutely murder to keep up, he wanted so badly to laugh. Stormlords, this was too much fun. He did approve of the reaver's decision to be silent and stoic after that. As amusing as it would have been had he fallen to questions and - gods forbid! - attempts to justify himself, it would have shamed him and made Ru quite clear that this promotion should not be taking place.

If he'd been suddenly confronted with that, Ru wasn't sure what he would've done. Maybe given him the choice of jumping over the cliffs or admitting to cowardice in front of the whole pride? That seemed unnecessarily wasteful, but if a reaver was a coward at heart, perhaps it would be for the best. All in all, it pleased the warlord that Bousvor was not proving to be a disappointment, even in the face of Ru's little charade.

"Your behavior on raids, your dealings within the pride. All of it, really. It's just not fitting for a lion of your rank." He paused. He paused for an uncomfortably long time, drawing this out maybe a little too much, based on the look Tuomas gave him. Well, it was his first time doing this.

"All in all, if you're going to carry on as you have been, I suppose I'll have to make you a captain. Congratulations."

Bousvor could only listen solemnly. He couldn't think of anything he'd done that had gone against reaver code of ethics. Clearly something wasn't right though. Had he spent too much time accepting askoruns? But that didn't seem to match either. It was part of his job to accept challengers. He wrinkled his brow slightly in thought.

The large male did his best not to shift nervously at the long pause. He would stand by anything he did though. He could only do as he saw was right. Bousvor bowed his head slightly, not looking forward to a punishment but going to hear it anyhow. If he had to he'd put in a word for himself. Surely Ruzski would let him tell his side of.... What?

Bousvor stared at the other lion as his mouth hung open, just a tiny bit. Did he? Had he just heard what he'd thought he heard? Clearly it was to be true! He lifted his head with a wide grin then gave a respectful bow. "Thank you warlord!" Now the presence of the lawspeaker made total sense. How could he have been so stupid?

"Is there anything I need to do now?" Protocol must be followed. Bousvor felt a wave of relief flood through his body. He felt a bit dazed at his good luck. Who'd have thought he'd make captain?

Finally Ru was allowed to grin, and grin he did. Not like a madman, but like a very smug warlord who had just enjoyed springing a surprise on a quality reaver. A quality captain, Ru amended.

"I'm told that there is nothing either one of us need to do at this point, although I could say some formal-sounding words if you like."

He'd prepared some formal-sounding words, just in case, and he certainly would not mind having the opportunity to say them, but if Bousvor was content with having his promotion heard and witnessed by a lawspeaker, Ru was fine with that, too. He had already derived a good deal of entertainment from this exchange.

A sheepish grin answered Ru's. He had been well and truly tricked, not that he minded much now. It had been worth a little anxiety to be promoted to captain. He was sure his thrall would be as surprised as he was.

"If you have them prepared, then I would like to hear them." Bousvor said respectfully. When the warlord said he'd prepared some formal words, it sounded like a good idea to hear them. It would be interesting to hear what Ru thought was important.

psst...I'm a horrible person. But I finally tagged you and poor Bousvor can finally have this RP over with.

Ru's face contorted and his tail and ears twitched as he did his best to master the grin he had allowed himself, and which now refused to be banished. Formal words were supposed to be delivered with formal expressions. Or at least not grins. At least, that was the standard practice, but Ru reminded himself that he was the warlord, and he could do as he pleased in this and other matters.

He gave up fighting the grin.

"Very well. You are now a captain of the Stormborn, a leader and an example to all others, Stormborn and outlander alike. Bring honor to yourself and your pride."

Actually, those weren't the words Ru had come up with, but he'd forgotten them about the time he opened his mouth to speak them and so he had been forced to ad-lib. Well, that hadn't sounded too awful, at any rate. Just the same, Ru did not look over at Tuomas, who murmured something to the effect of "Heard and witnessed." He did not want to see the lawspeaker smirking at his fumbling.

"And, really, that's it. We'll hold a feast when you return from your first viking, but you knew that. All that's left to you is to assemble a band and start raiding." He rolled his shoulders as he finished speaking. Then he added a polite dismissal: "You may go do that now, if you wish."

*Hugs* You're fine! I haven't been exactly able to keep up with all my rps during the week. XD Thanks for getting a last post in! Fin with mine.

Bousvor could tell the warlord was happy. He could see the male struggling to hold back his grin and said nothing. Could warlords be happy? Well he was pleased with the situation at any rate which was fine by him. The tawny male listened solemnly to the words.

He nodded, "thank you, yes sir." His honor had gotten him this far; he would trust it to continue to guide him in his daily actions. Bousvor gave a respectful nod to the lawspeaker as he heard and witness the changing of the rank.

"Then I shall start on it right away." In truth he needed to. He hadn't been expecting this at all. Thus he wasn't sure there was anyone yet who'd want to join his band. He'd have to spread the word that he was looking. Bousvor gave a final bow with a murmured, "thank you warlord," then turned his paws back toward his den. He had some serious thinking and planning to do.
